On Wednesday July 12th, camera footage released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department revealed a deputy striking a woman twice in the face during a traffic stop in July 2022.

According to Sheriff Robert Luna, his predecessor and the internal affairs department were aware of the footage last year, but he personally learned about the incident only a few days ago. “I found the punching of the woman and the circumstances completely unnacceptable,” he stated in a news conference. “Maybe in the past, maybe, maybe not, something like this body-worn camera footage would not have been released to the community.”

In an email response to the Los Angeles Times, the former sheriff, Alex Villanueva, criticized Luna's remarks as "highly deceptive" and clarified that the investigation was still ongoing at the time of his departure.

“Furthermore, the only reason action was taken today was because the statute of limitation was about to expire tomorrow, July 14,” Villanueva continued stating. “His presser deliberately excluded all footage that showed the struggle to remove the infants from the custody of the suspects who endangered their lives, and the context of the deputy’s decision to use force. That very context will most likely preclude any criminal proceedings that would lead to a conviction, so this is nothing more than political posturing.”

In the video below law enforcement officers can be heard informing a woman that she is being arrested for not having her baby in a car seat, as well as alleging that the driver lacked a valid license. As they attempted to separate the child from the mother's arms, another woman, who was also holding a baby, started shouting at the officials and was subsequently restrained. It was during this altercation that a male deputy delivered two punches towards the woman's head, all while she was still holding a child.

There shouldn't have been NO reason for the Sheriff to punch her twice while she was holding a baby. She didn't pose a threat. What if he had hit the baby? What if she had dropped the baby? He needs to face disciplinary actions for his actions.
