The Importance of Social Currency in 2023

By: Jordan King

A few years ago, I was going about my day when out of nowhere I received a news alert about China’s social credit system becoming official. That headline read EXACTLY like the similar Black Mirror episode. In reality, we have an example of a nation that can either benefit or punish its citizens simply based off of their everyday interactions. In addition to income or cash being exchanged; they rely on vibes and respect.

When you think of what it means to “pay” for something, immediately you think cash (or credit). Coins, not so much, but dollar bills still continue to capture one’s attention. You can move quicker with cash. Currency is usually thought of as a means to settle debts, yet dealing with others in everyday life is also an exchange. Being privy to who and what transfers when dealing with people can easily help one make discerning choices when trying to reach success and peace!

Human nature dictates that we as social beings do better when part of a community; or a tribe. Those who strike alone can and many do live, yet the challenges make that road tougher than need be. Being able to work with others requires both empathy and a willingness to deal with those that will never seek peace with you. Just the game of life, yet life has many twists and turns.

Negative Outcomes

Nobody likes a negative experience. As much as we try to be our best and do what we can; humans make mistakes. The difference however, is those who fail to address their attitudes with people. Memories fade but people remember how a person made them feel. Being mindful and discerning can help one balance between if one’s intentions are solid or shaky.

When you make a good impression, you’re making a deposit of your character. You show that you can be cordial and get responsibilities handled, which goes miles in terms of establishing good relationships. Most people I would hope are in tune enough to spot a poser. One who connects simply for self-gain/profit may be able to portray the illusion of success, yet what’s done in the dark will always come to light!

Our generation has been both unique and blessed to have such effective means of communication. We take for granted the human touch when it comes to a phone call or even a handwritten letter. Yet we’re revolutionary in being able to video chat in 4K with colleagues in Colombia, something unheard of even 30 years ago.

I’ve said it before, the kids are alright. As we age, sometimes fear sets in because we have little trust in the generations after us. We think we know best and will always be the voice of reason. Yet the definition of what’s important to society evolves with the unique needs of each generation. Yesterday’s price certainly isn’t today’s price. As the new crop of kids and young adults get more effective at tech breakthroughs and applications; the sky is literally the limit as to what could exist in the world. I would be amiss to say I could have imagined using this phone with a screen when I was growing up lol!
