Entrepreneur TiJahnni Newton, owner of TiJahnni Los Angeles, talks inspiring her community through making jewelry and running a business full time in an exclusive interview! Check it out here!
“I want to encourage the readers to follow their heart. There will be people that don’t understand what you’re doing or why you’re doing it. Go with your gut.”
By: Omar Cook
This week’s “Who’s Hot?” Influencer of the Week is TiJahnni Newton! Her name is also her brand “TiJahnni” where she specializes in making jewelry and accessories. Originally from Los Angeles, California, she attended the University of Oklahoma where she ran track. Aside from creating and athletics, TiJahnni has spent most of her adult life working with children with Autism and other developmental disabilities. It wasn’t until 1 year ago that started making jewelry but now she has turned it into a full time business!
We talked with TiJahnni Newton in an exclusive interview, check it out below!
What sparked you to start your business? How did the idea come about?
TiJahnni: The business came about really naturally. I didn’t start making jewelry with the intention of selling anything. I simply liked the idea of making my own things. I made my first earrings as a creative outlet. Once my first designs got really good interaction on Instagram I started getting custom requests. From that point I started to build a large variety of different accessories and the designs kept flowing.
What advice would you give to young people looking to start their own business?
TiJahnni: I would tell aspiring entrepreneurs not to force anything. Whatever they decide to do as a business should be something that brings them joy. Also, don’t expect to have all of the answers in the beginning. It is a daily learning experience.
What are some of the necessary skills that you've seen are needed to run a successful business?
TiJahnni: In my experience so far, I’ve had to get really good at managing many tasks. You have to be able to put in the work without complaints. Thats why it so important to do something that makes you happy.
Networking and building meaningful connections is very necessary. I had to quickly get comfortable with meeting new people. Building a successful business takes a village. If you want to grow, you can’t do it all on your own.
What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
TiJahnni: I don’t know if I would use the word failure. Each any every experience is something to learn from. Trial and error. I have had a couple of slip-ups with orders where I may send someone the wrong color, or leave out an item. But I simply had to make sure im paying more attention to detail. Errors like that are going to happen but I make sure to communicate with my customer and prioritize addressing any issue. Fortunately, my errors don’t happen often. As I become more experienced I will keep improving my system.
What motivates you?
TiJahnni: I’m motivated by the crucial need for black business and black economy. It is absolutely necessary for the advancement of black people. I’m definitely not just doing this for myself. I want to inspire others, provide opportunities, and create something substantial for the next generations.
What are some things your business does in the community?
TiJahnni: I’m in the brainstorming stages of creating step-by-step videos for students to learn how I make some of my pieces. I am also a credentialed Special Education teacher and Id love to merge the two by joining some zoom classrooms to have craft sessions for the schools in my community. Arts and crafts is not something that is really pushed in the schools. Students should be taught how to make things. I am also heavily involved in an organization called Better Together and Crafting the Future. Both organizations have a focus on underserved youth, crafts, and small business.
How do you define success?
TiJahnni: Success is achieved once you feel free in your day to day life. Ups and downs will come but when joy and excitement are your default moods, I believe that is success.
How do you build a successful customer base?
TiJahnni: I built a customer base by pinpointing what type of people would likely wear my jewelry and I interacted with those people. I include my customers in my branding and advertising. I build my customer base by trying to give each customer a positive experience, reposting customer selfies, having conversations with them, and expressing my gratitude.
Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful entrepreneur?
TiJahnni: I definitely believe you have to have a love for what you do and you have to have an enormous amount of confidence in what you’re doing.
Who is your greatest inspiration?
TiJahnni: When it comes to my business I am really inspired by a Black jewelry maker named Areeayl. She makes beautiful pieces that are similar to my aesthetic. Ive watched her business really grow and thrive. Its amazing to see.
What is your favorite aspect of being a business owner?
TiJahnni: My favorite aspect of being a business owner is definitely the freedom. I am able to make my own rules, my own schedule, and create what I want. It can be scary sometimes because I’m still learning but it’s truly an amazing feeling.
How do you go about marketing your business?
TiJahnni: I mainly market on Instagram. I post often and I make sure I use quality images and video. I try my best to repost any customer that tags me in their story. Ive had a couple of professional photo shoots for my brand. I feel that these things are necessary if your brand involves beauty or fashion. Also, I’m fortunate enough to have some of the most beautiful customers in the world and many of them take stunning photos in TiJahnniLosAngeles jewelry.
What sacrifices have you had to make to keep your business running?
TiJahnni: A few weeks ago I made the scary decision to quit my job to run my business full time. My career was vey important to me but I was no longer able to work and run a business at the same time. Everything is going well so far. I’m just continuing to believe and trust God.
What company or business do you admire most other than yours and why?
TiJahnni: I really love Beads By Aree. Her jewelry is all handmade original designs. She managed to grow to the point where mega-celebs wear her items. The best part about it is that it is black owned and woman owned.
Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years?
TiJahnni: In 10 years I hope to be a well established brand that is able to provide opportunities for black people and make a difference in the community. My goal is to use my platform to promote creativity, black culture, and positivity.

“Success isn’t ‘one size fits all.’ It’s subjective. I see success as having peace in your life, being healthy holistically, and being happy...the intangible things”
By: Omar Cook
This week’s “Who’s Hot?” Influencer of the Week is Sam Ross, an award-Winning Entrepreneur, creative professional, philanthropist, and Mental Health Advocate. Ross is a full-time entrepreneur and owner of Sam Ross Designs, with clientele that reaches coast to coast.
Ross graduated from Southern University and A&M College in 2012, where he earned a degree in Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. It was during his time at Southern that he decided to pursue a profession in graphic design as he began designing graduation invitations for his friends which eventually turned into hundreds of graduates over the course of time and a self-sustaining business.
Ross spent time perfecting his craft through employment with the Louisiana House of Representatives, The Drum Newspaper (Internship), WBRZ-TV, and the Southern University Ag Center. He has received several awards for his work including being awarded by honored by The Rouge Collection as one of 28 Black Leaders and Influencers in Baton Rouge, LA , "Outstanding PR Alumni" by the Southern University and A&M College Department of Mass Communication for outstanding alumni achievement in Public Relations and was also announced as one of the Southern University Alumni Federation's Top 40 Under 40 in 2019.
Aside from his professional achievements, he has made it is duty to give back by creating the Sankofa Scholarship, a scholarship geared towards awarding first-time college students enrolled at Southern University and A&M College.
We talked with Sam Ross in an exclusive interview, check it out below!
What sparked you to start your business? How did the idea come about?
Sam Ross: I started out designing as a hobby around the age of 11. I would spend much of my time designing faux album art, magazine covers, and staying up through all of hours of the night dreaming up all kinds of stuff. This is before I even knew what graphic design was, but I am a person of faith and believe that was God putting me on path to my destiny way back then.
My business started forming around 2010 when I was in undergrad at Southern University. I started out designing graduation invitations for a few friends and that ended up growing to the point where I became one of the main go-to people for graduation invitations.
I see these things as my beginnings.
What advice would you give to young people looking to start their own business?
Sam Ross: I would say discover what needs you would be dedicated to providing solutions for. Also, list your “why(s)” and always keep them in mind.
What are some of the necessary skills that you've seen are needed to run a successful business?
Sam Ross: In my experience, skills that have helped me greatly are organization, discipline, resiliency, faith, and optimism. You won’t always “feel like it,” but that’s where discipline comes in. You may face rejection and be misunderstood. That’s where resiliency comes in. Some things may scare you and make you fearful, but that’s where your faith and optimism come in. Now, organization...well, that speaks for itself. It’s absolutely necessary to operate effectively and efficiently personally and professionally.
What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
Sam Ross: I would say having mentors early on is definitely something I would recommend those starting out to do. Having wise counsel helps a lot. The Bible speaks about this. You can learn from others’ experience. I didn’t necessarily do that when I first started.
How do you define success and what motivates you?
Sam Ross: Success isn’t “one size fits all.” It’s subjective. I see success as having peace in your life, being healthy holistically, and being happy...the intangible things. Being able to be there for my parents as they grow old motivates me. Also, I know there are many people that are watching me. So, I guess we can say inspiring others motivates me.
What are the overall goals for your business and what purpose do you want it to serve?
Sam Ross: The overall mission (or goal) of my business is to produce effective graphic design and branding that presents people professionally, creatively, and in excellence.
How do you build a successful customer base and how do you go about marketing your business?
Sam Ross: Relationships. People do business with those they trust. You must always keep that in mind. Also, word of mouth is still a major thing. If their homeboy or best friend recommends my services, more than likely, they will inquire. Why? Because they trust their friend who trusts me.
I am a stickler for just marketing as your authentic self. People appreciate that. It’s relatable. You don’t have to create this larger-than-life persona. Just be you.
What makes your brand stand out from others in your niche?
Sam Ross: Going back to the last question, I would say my relationships with people helps me stand out. It’s more than just projects with me. With many of my clients, there’s a special connection there.
I also have a distinctive way I design. I would also say I’ve done a great job of branding myself personally, which makes it easier for people to support my business and other endeavors.
Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful entrepreneur?
Sam Ross: Love this question. I always say that there is “no secret formula.” The Bible lays it out as plain as day for us: faith and works. That’s the formula.
Have the faith. Do the work.
What is your favorite aspect of being a business owner?
Sam Ross: I would say being able to help others get their dreams off the ground is one of my favorite things about what I do.
What sacrifices have you had to make to keep your business running?
Sam Ross: “Dedication, hard work.” Shout out to Nipsey! Many times, days may be long. You will be frustrated sometimes. That’s why passion must be present. It will help keep you going. You have to be really responsible with your time as a business owner as well. Time is money and those are two things you shouldn’t waste.
What company or business do you admire most other than yours and why?
Sam Ross: I admire the late Steve Jobs and his ingenuity. Apple pretty much rules the [tech] world.
Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years?
Sam Ross: In 10 years, I expect to have a full staff. We will be operating as a firm that does brand consulting and have in-house creatives. I’m so excited about that part of my dream.

Chris Hudson, founder of Life's Journey Clothing discusses his intent to inspire the world to leave a positive lifestyle! We Discuss it here!
“First take time to get to know what your purpose is on earth. A lot of people jump from business to business because they don’t have a true understanding of what they really want to do. ”
By: Omar Cook
This week's "Who's Hot?" Entrepreneur of the Week is Chris Hudson, founder of Life's Journey Clothing! Hudson is a native of Lexington, Kentucky and now resides in Atlanta. He graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in 2004 and attended a private college in Atlanta where he received his business management degree. Having been brought up in church, he was always inspired and encouraged by his parents Lee and Vickie to do great things to lead others to Christ as well as positively impact his community and eventually the world. After the birth of his son Jaden in 2008, he was motivated to start a t-shirt line which has grown beyond the imaginable.
Hudson describes “Life’s Journey” as an inspirational clothing brand. Chris began his journey by selling t-shirts out of his trunk to friends and family members. The brand has since developed and evolved throughout the years with much more to offer on the horizon. Chris now has his own store front back at home in Kentucky. Life’s Journey is more than a clothing brand, it offers inspiration to lead a positive lifestyle. The brand is focused on developing individuals from the inside, out. Hudson wants this brand to focus on positive messages that will inspire you to pursue your purpose. Life’s Journey wants to inspire you to believe in yourself, pursue your gifts, and inspire your generation. “We are not simply selling you clothing, we’re giving you inspiration.” Chris' mission in life is to leave an impact and help others fulfill their purpose in life. He has mentored many young children and peers alike. He believes that if you put God first, ANYTHING is possible and EVERYTHING will fall into place. The vision of Life's Journey is to encourage individuals through the art of creative design. Believe. Pursue. Inspire.
We talked with Chris Hudson in an exclusive interview, check it out below!
QUESTION: What sparked you to start your business? How did the idea come about?
Chris: What sparked me was that I always loved fashion & I had a heart to help people. So I remember praying asking GOD to revel my purpose on earth. So after a few weeks of praying, late one night the name hit me “LIFE’S JOURNEY”. Soon after, I made my first t shirt design an eagle and with a huge inspirational quote on the back.
QUESTION: What advice would you give to young people looking to start their own business?
Chris: I would say first take time to get to know what your purpose is on earth. A lot of people jump from business to business because they don’t have a true understanding of what they really want to do. Have a vision for why you’re doing what you want to do. Research & study the market and find ways to disrupt it. Relationships first, business second. Lastly, develop perseverance and patience because their is no such thing as overnight success.
QUESTION: What are some of the necessary skills that you've seen are needed to run a successful business?
Chris: Leadership, Networking, problem/solution solving, Communication & Negotiation and most importantly develop a backbone.
QUESTION: What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
Chris: In life it’s good to fail because that’s how you truly learn. I can’t really pin point one failure that really sticks out to me. One of my issues early on was ordering a ton of inventory and not really having a true game plan on how I planned on marketing the items. I would get stuck with a ton of items. I found a cut & sew manufacturer that wanted me to do 100 per piece of the same design and same color. That hurt me because I had a limited audience that I was selling to. It’s like once one person wears it the other person doesn’t want any parts lol. Secondly, I would say when I opened my first flagship store, I didn’t have the proper security nor insurance. It was broken into twice and I almost lost everything in the process.
QUESTION: How do you define success and what motivates you?
Chris: Everyone’s definition of success is different; we all aspire different things in life. For me, it is to be able to create legacy for my son and family. What motivates me is when I’m able to use my gifts to inspire others to fulfill their purpose on earth.
QUESTION: What are the overall goals for your business and what purpose do you want it to serve?
Chris: Honestly, at first I wanted to build a huge multi million dollar business but as I started building the brand I felt a ton of joy just serving others with my purpose. My ultimate goal is to open a youth entrepreneur center back in my home town Lexington, KY.
QUESTION: How do you build a successful customer base and how do you go about marketing your business??
Chris: It’s simple, relationship first, business second. I made it a point to get to know everyone personally that supported my business and in return they showed more interest in me. We are rolling out a ton of new marketing ideas but honestly we just try to connect with our audience through the messages that we put on our clothing.
QUESTION: What makes your brand stand out from others in your niche?
Chris: Story telling through fashion.
QUESTION: Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful entrepreneur?
Chris: Shesssh.. I mean if their was a formula everyone would make it lol. I believe that through trial and error and a relentlessness to never give up, you can create a roadmap to becoming a successful entrepreneur.
QUESTION: What is your favorite aspect of being a business owner?
Chris: Flexibility
QUESTION: What sacrifices have you had to make to keep your business running?
Chris: Being away from family is really tough. Investing everything back into the business. Constantly taking new risks.
QUESTION: What company or business do you admire most other than yours and why?
Chris: Nike. Nike to me is the epitome of a lifestyle brand that encourages you to follow your gut.
QUESTION: Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years?
Chris: Where I see myself, not sure. I focus on living one day at a time. One foot in front of the other. With the business I would say exactly where it should be. GLOBAL lifestyle brand.
QUESTION: Is there anything else you would like people to know about your business?
Chris: Believe Pursue Inspire. Believe in yourself even when everyone doubts you. Pursue your GOD given talent/purpose. Inspire the world someone is watching and depending on you to make it. @lifesjourneyco www.lifesjourneyclothing.com

McClinton is a 19 year old fashion designer from Anaheim, California and raised in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He was a not so good high school student, but fought to turn it around and is now in school for journalism. Writing and drawing have always been his passion since he was young and while in high school, McClinton was a part of the school’s film program that won a couple of awards throughout the state. This opportunity opened his eyes to videography and the possibilities it could provide for him!
Check out the brand here www.deathtoheartbreaks.com
Deathtoheartbreaks For LA Fashion Week 2022
We talked with Elijah Mcclinton in an exclusive interview, check it out below!
Question: What sparked you to start your business? How did the idea come about?
McClinton: I always had a passion for clothing and just putting certain looks together. But, my junior year of high school is when it all started. My two friends at the time, Dejuan Barney, who is still a part of the group, and Ashton Graham, had an idea that if we turn our hardships into creativity that nothing could stop us. And that’s the definition of our brand Deathtoheartbreaks. “Death to anything destructive or harmful that can be turned into creativity.” Since then we have added a few other members in Monty Chino, Ian Courtney Ferguson, and Jon Davis along the way.
Question: What advice would you give to young people looking to start their own business?
McClinton: I would say to trust yourself. That no one knows you like you know you. There have been plenty of times where I’ve been told, “that won’t work, or this won’t work” and you just got to have the fortitude to do it your way and to block out anyone or anything telling you to do otherwise.
Question: What are some of the necessary skills that you've seen are needed to run a successful business?
McClinton: TO HAVE THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS! It’s not what you know it’s always who you know. You have to be unafraid to put yourself out there. You can’t just be a figure behind the screen all the time. “Be Somebody, Be Somewhere.” – Dan Lok
Question: What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
McClinton: Interestingly enough, I don't think I've hit that wall yet. Of course, there are always obstacles in the way. But I would say the only thing would be trying to wear too many hats at one time and communication between members at times. I know it stems from me liking things a certain way and never really relying on other people to do anything for me. But I would say it’s gotten better to a point where I have a great team around me that all know their roles and play them well.
Question: What motivates you?
McClinton: The once local stars that made it out. I think it’s so fascinating how the same people from my home area have found a way to make it out and are now making a name for themselves. They were once in the same shoes I’ve been in. And now they have become the ones where you can look to and say, “you can do it too.”
Question: How do you generate new ideas?
McClinton: Idea’s come from life experiences and the people that I meet in passing. Ideas and concepts are always flowing through our minds and it wouldn’t be us to not be thinking what’s next.
Question: How do you define success?
McClinton: Success to me is doing what you love and not having a care in the world what anybody has to say about it. Life is what you make it out to be. You can choose to make a great, or shitty. It’s your choice.
Question: How do you build a successful customer base?
McClinton: I seem to get this question a lot and all I have to say is to find your niche. Find your target audience and roll with it. If you aim for athletes and you actually have a skater crowd. Roll with what works. Don’t overthink your game plan just go and execute.
Question: Do you believe there is a formula for being a successful entrepreneur?
McClinton: There isn't a particular formula no, but all entrepreneurs have to go through one thing. And that's pain and hardships. It’s always going to be a struggle. Whether you not having the correct resources, money, people, equipment, there is always something that will be missing. You just got to learn to live with that and move along.
Question: Who is your greatest inspiration?
McClinton: Pharrell Williams by far. Ever since I was little it's been N.E.R.D and The Neptunes all day. The way he seems to be everywhere and do everything still amazes me. He's what I call a humble flexer. He knows he's the shit, but he will always play it off like it's nothing, it's so amazing.
Question: What is your favorite aspect of being a business owner?
McClinton: My favorite aspect is always the reaction. It’s really cool seeing someone react to your ideas, whether it be good or bad, any reaction I receive, I learn something from it.
Question: How do you go about marketing your business?
McClinton: Conducting interviews is one, connecting with people who have the same minds as us, and just staying relevant. One of the greatest things about conducting interviews is you also learn something as well. You get to pick their brain and hopefully, you can come out of it and learn something from the conversation.
Question: What sacrifices have you had to make to keep your business running?
McClinton: I wouldn’t call them sacrifices if you want it that bad. But it’d probably be the usual not going out to eat, partying, and impulse buying. Spending all the money you earned in a two-week period just buy some materials. Being late on some bills, the usual.
Question: What company or business do you admire most other than yours and why?
McClinton: Their two companies that I admire the most. And it’s one, they have a great story of overcoming great obstacles and two they’re just great companies. You would be a fool to not say Apple and BMW. These two companies have overcome the then dominated Microsoft company and the booming American car business into oblivion. From both being the laughing stock of the industry, on the verge of bankruptcy, too now pure luxury and excellence. You cannot beat that. Another player in the game would be Under Armor. Don’t be surprised if Under Armor becomes the leader of not just sportswear but casual wear as well.
Question: Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years?
McClinton: My plan is to bring something unique to the industry while also being true to myself. Bringing all different mediums together. I see myself and the brand as a stepping stool for other young and ambitious artists like myself a platform to branch out. Ultimately my future goal would be to have a fashion show here in Atlanta with other artists I appreciate to create something bigger and brighter for the community, while also making a name for myself in the industry.
Question: Is there anything else you would like people to know about your business?
McClinton: Season 09 shop is now open, make sure to go to our website at www.deathtoheartbreaks.com and subscribe so you can be the first to be up to date on new updates, releases, and articles. We have something special planned for the summer as well so be on the lookout for that.

I always had an obsession for sneakers growing up as I was constantly going to sneaker conventions all throughout NYC when I was 16. Meeting people to trade, sell, and buy sneakers from others was an experience at a young age. When the job hunting was tough, I would sell some of my sneakers from my own collection to pay myself. After I graduated college, I came up with the name “Sole Simple” because to me it is a very unique name and also the idea of turning a hobby into a paycheck is really easy and simple.
Question: What advice would you give to young people looking to start their own business?
Smith: I advise all the young entrepreneurs to make sure that they’re 1000% invested into themselves first before they invest in their brand. Too many people try to start a business and are not confident in their brand which leads to failure in the long run. Confidence is a big factor because you have to stand firm on why your products and or services separate your brand from others. If potential customers see that you are not confident in your brand, they will take their money elsewhere. If you don’t believe in yourself, why should someone else believe in you?
Question: What are some of the necessary skills that you've seen are needed to run a successful business?
Smith: Some skills that are I’ve personally seen that are needed is time management, self discipline, assertiveness, and work ethic. If you can master those four skills in your business, it will lead to great success throughout the years.
Question: What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
Smith: The failures that I’ve faced in the business is sometimes investing in some sneakers that end up being easily accessible which everyone in the market calls “bricks”. Sometimes being caught up in the hype too much can lead to no gain in the return of the investment. The good thing about it is that sometimes you can return them and get your money back. One thing I’ve learned is to always do research extensively before you put your money in it. Self assurance is the best insurance in my book.
Question: What motivates you?
Smith: My mother really is my motivation. She is the one who instilled great values as a man to always strive to want more for yourself and to never be content in anything I do. She really is the MVP in all of this!
Question: How do you generate new ideas?
Smith: I tend to read books, listen to music, and create time for myself to think on how I can make my brand bigger than what it is now. I have a strong tendency to overthink every situation and that’s where I start thinking outside of the box. I try to create at least 2-3 ideas for my business everyday.
Question: How do you define success?
Smith: Success is when you realize that your blessings will always be bigger and better than your burdens. Financial success is great of course but making sure that you are mentally and spiritually wealthy is even better. You can have all the money in the world but if you’re not right within, how do you expect to win? I believe that everyone is successful in their own way, shape, or form.
Question: How did you build a successful customer base?
Smith: A great customer base starts off with a great reputation on social media. I started my customer base on social media where I would post up pairs of sneakers I wanted to sell on Twitter and Instagram. I started selling locally at first and gradually I would have random people hit me up on social media all throughout the U.S to purchase. I would write up an invoice and when they paid me, I would ship the sneakers to the address the customer provided. My customer base grew even bigger when I was playing professional football in Germany. When people in the U.S couldn’t get their hands on a pair of sneakers that sold out, they would hit me up on Twitter and paid me to ship it to them from Germany.
Question: Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful entrepreneur?
Smith: Besides supply and demand, I don’t believe there is a set formula to be a successful entrepreneur. Nowadays, there are so many people who have became successful entrepreneurs in their own way that it is hard for anyone to duplicate it. Just because your formula is working for your own company, doesn’t mean it will work the same for someone else’s brand. You have to find your own niche and capitalize on it in every way possible.
Question: Who is your greatest inspiration?
Smith: As an entrepreneur, I would have to say Jay-Z because he embodies the definition of a businessman all the way. That transition from being a rapper to a successful business owner is something I strive to have especially being that I’m a professional athlete. As I listen to some of his old albums, I realize that he always had a mindset that separated him from other rappers in the industry.
Question: What is your favorite aspect of being a business owner?
Smith: It’s a beautiful feeling being able to pay yourself and not having anyone tell you what to do or how to do it. Being your own boss and having your own hours is nothing short of immaculate to say the least.
Question: How do you go about marketing your business?
Smith: I balance social media marketing with traditional marketing. While marketing on social media, My partners and I would attend sneaker conventions, entrepreneur mixers, and other social events handing out business cards to people who fit our target market. I’m a firm believer in making sure to marketing the business on all avenues as much as possible.
Question: What sacrifices have you had to make to keep your business running?
Smith: I sacrificed my social life. I’ve been so busy that I have less time to hang out with friends because every minute and hour has be productive towards expanding my brand. The party life ain’t going nowhere and I rather spend my money on my business than to spend it on things with no value. I treat my business as if it was of child of my own.
Question: What company or business do you admire most other than yours and why?
Smith: Flight Club. They’ve been successful in the industry for several years and still continue to be. I aspire to have that longevity and strong reputation that they have in their business.
Question: Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years?
Smith: I can see myself opening several locations outside of NYC with my partners and changing the sneaker head culture to something better than it ever was. People will see Sole Simple globally!
Question: Is there anything else you would like people to know about your business?
Smith: Yes. We have an online store up right now and I need everyone to follow us on all of our social networks. We are doing sneaker preorders on each release and we sell high end streetwear brands as well.

Question: What sparked you to start your business? How did the idea come about?
Coleman: Having my daughter sparked me to go ahead and start my business. I had already been thinking about the idea. Once I found out she was on the way, I knew it was time. The idea came from Jesus. He woke me up out my sleep one night at 4 am and the first thing I heard was pascher. So I start researching everything and spent a year working on it before I even told anyone.
Question: What advice would you give to young people looking to start their own business?
Coleman: It’s not sweet. I feel like alot of people now a days want to start their own business which is a good thing; I love seeing people doing that but its alot of hard work that goes into it. It's not impossible, it's something you have to be willing to work hard at day in and day out. No matter how hard it gets, always keep your faith. Believe in yourself and your product or no one else will.
Question: What are some of the necessary skills that you've seen are needed to run a successful business?
Coleman: A good work ethic. Having good customer service skills and treating people the right way will take you and your business farther than you think. Being honest also.
Question: What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
Coleman: Not sending all my paperwork in to the IRS on time. I’ve learned that you have to read everything carefully, sometimes twice to make sure you have a clear understanding. Thats always important in business.
Question: What motivates you?
Coleman: My daughter Number one, just putting myself in a position to be able to always provide for her is the thing that motivates me most. I want to be able to give her the world one day. I know I can’t do that if I don’t get up and get it. My family also. My parents have been through alot and I put them through some things that I’d like to pay them back for. And I just want to be able to take care of them and my people. Not making it to the NFL motivates me because I let one of my dreams fail; I won’t let this one fail.
Question: How do you generate new ideas?
Coleman: Thinking about things I’ve seen around me on a daily basis and turning them into creative ideas to express myself. Brainstorming while listening to music.
Question: How do you define success?
Coleman: Success isn’t the result of making money, making money is a result of success. You determine your own success. Just because you have a million dollars, that doesnt mean you are a success. Being successful is doing something because you wanted to do it not because you had to or feel like you are forced to. If you always wanted to be a school teacher and you go on and become a school teacher THAT'S being successful. Setting a goal at something you want to achieve and doing it.
Question: How do you build a successful customer base?
Coleman: By always having good customer service and letting/showing your customers you appreciate their support and business.
Question: Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful entrepreneur?
Coleman: Yes I believe there is. Hard work, faith, and will. Being able to see your vision when nobody else can.
Question: Who is your greatest inspiration?
Coleman: Eric Thomas
Question: What is your favorite aspect of being a business owner?
Coleman: Being able to do things exactly how I want to and when I want to. If something goes wrong then its on me.
Question: How do you go about marketing your business?
Coleman: I do alot of social media marketing, passing out business cards, networking at different business events around the city. I only wear my brand. So I kind of feel like a walking billboard.
Question: What sacrifices have you had to make to keep your business running?
Coleman: Going without, just so my daughter and business can have the things that they need. Putting all my money into it, having faith that it’ll turn into more. Staying up two and three days in a row just to make sure everything gets done.
