This week's "Who's Hot?" Artist of the week is West Coast singer, Lamar Jay! Lamar Jay has been making for a while with some of his most popular songs being “Bad Habits”, “The Masses”, and “Joy”. This artist is extremely talented and has a vibe that just about anyone can get into. His mixtape releases of A Better Tomorrow and Heaven Only Knows are full of vibes all the way through that are perfect for those long car rides. Cali is full of under the radar talent and Lamar Jay is no exception!

QUESTION: How long have you been making music and how did you get started?

Lamar Jay: I’ve been creating music ever since I learned to put stories together, I don’t recall how old I was at that time. I got started because of my family. My mother and her sisters were in a gospel group and just hearing them harmonize and come together to trigger this feeling inside of me that made me want to sing too. So I began to ask everyone that I knew do they know anyone who can help me get to a studio.

QUESTION: Musically, who has been your biggest influence in helping you along your journey and who are your favorite musicians?

Lamar Jay: My biggest influence, musically, is my mom and her sisters’ gospel group. I have too many favorite musicians, but if I have to name a few, I would say Earth Wind and Fire, Musiq, U2, and Anita Baker. 

QUESTION: What artists would you like to collaborate with and why?

Lamar Jay: I would love to work with Musiq Soulchild and Pharrell. Musiq’s records are so powerful. His music opened up the genre for artists like me. Pharrell is a musical genius.

QUESTION: What do you feel is your best song/project ever released and why?

Lamar Jay: That’s not a fair question. I have a few favorite songs and projects. They’re all my favorites for different reasons. Lol I’m a music head. 

QUESTION: What projects can we look forward to in the near future?

Lamar Jay: I’m working on an EP right now. I don’t have a title yet but just know it’s going to be heartfelt. I’m going to be vulnerable and open and discuss a few topics that are sensitive to the Black community and to me, as a Black man. Also, I plan to start touring soon and spending time with my family.

QUESTION: How do you generate new ideas for your music? 

Lamar Jay: I usually sit down and write down my ideas anytime something pops in my head. I also take from my life experiences, things I see, and issues, whether good or bad. 

QUESTION: What motivates you and how do you define success?

Lamar Jay: I’m motivated by my fans, knowing someone can hear one of my records and respond with such joy and happiness makes my day. A fan literally had her parents write out my lyrics and got it tatted on her ankle that read, “Grow with Joy”. That’s how I define success, to know my music touched someone. 

QUESTION: How do you describe your music to people and what separates you from other artists in your genre?

Lamar Jay: I describe my music as pain medicine. I’ve found my musical purpose and that is to help others as much as I can. That is my job. What separates me from other artists is, I’m just me and that’s all I can be.

QUESTION: Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful artist?

Lamar Jay: Yes. Don’t give up. 

QUESTION: Who is your greatest inspiration?

Lamar Jay: My greatest inspiration is my family and my fans. Without them I would have quit long time ago.

QUESTION: In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Lamar Jay: There are so many influential and successful artists in my genre of today I can’t just pick one. Not fair lol

QUESTION: Which emotion more than any other, currently dominates your music? Joy, sadness, anger or passion etc. , and why?

Lamar Jay: Passion, Joy, and Sadness. Mix all three, you’ll get Lamar Jay. Why? We’re all human and go through many emotions, which dominates my music.

QUESTION: What sacrifices have you had to make, to make your dream a reality?

Lamar Jay: Relationships, health, sleep, list goes on. I’ve been at this for so long, sometimes I surprise myself how I keep fighting, all to make my dream a reality.

QUESTION: What aspect of the music making process excites you most, and what aspect discourages you the most?

Lamar Jay: Picking the production and the final product excites me most. What discourages me the most, is the mixing process, videos, and all the promo you have to line up before releasing new material. 

QUESTION: Where do you see yourself and your music in 10 years?

Lamar Jay: In the next 10 years, I see myself touring, and writing for other artists. I will be the founder and CEO of my own writing team, and help other artists, especially singers, get their shine.

QUESTION: What advice would you give to other up and coming artists or people looking to break into the music industry?

Lamar Jay: Keep a prayer in your heart and don’t look down, look up. If you give up in your mind, you already lost.

This week's "Who's Hot?" Artist of the week is East Coast rapper, Maui Max! This 25 year old artist was born in Newark, New Jersey but now resides in Atlanta, Georgia. We’ve interviewed a lot of talented artists on this platform, and this is easily one of the most under the radar rappers out right now. Maui Max brings a dope flow with raw lyrics and just about every song is a banger in it’s own right. He does a good job of making music you can vibe to, and music you can turn up to while still holding true to his own originality. Slept on is an understatement, and if you’re looking for new music for your playlist, this artist has to be added.

QUESTION: How long have you been making music and how did you get started?

Maui Max: Been making music seriously for about 6 years. I moved from Jersey to Georgia in 2011, got a job at a clothing store and one of the managers told me I looked like somebody who would hang out with his little brother lol. So one day he introduced me then me and bro been rocking ever since, come to find out he does music not only rap, but produces and engineers as well. I always wanted to rap but at the time I didn’t think it was realistic and in Jersey there weren’t many platforms or studios that I knew of. Being a fly on the wall and watching the homies work, doing features here and there and being pushed to take it seriously, I said why not? I’m going to make my own mixtape and it was on from there.

QUESTION: Musically, who has been your biggest influence in helping you along your journey and who are your favorite musicians?

Maui Max: My biggest influence can’t just be one person, it’s a whole plethora of artists I look up to but if I had to name any off top it would be Pac, Jay Z, Nas, Curren$y, Dom Kennedy, Schoolboy Q, Cole, Wiz, Cudi, and the late great Nipsey Hussle not just because he’s gone now. People that know me knows what he meant to me alive. It’s hard because i’m a rap music guy and so many artist have a big influence on who I am as a person and style as an artist. 9/10 if they from LA they probably had an impact on me at some point, I love the culture and authenticity of the westcoast.

QUESTION: What artists would you like to collaborate with and why?

Maui Max: Most people I would like to collab with are people I would like to just sit down and chop it up with, get game, ask questions, build far beyond music, people who I identified with and said “We be thinking the same shit.” So I guess it would be my idols and influencers I named previously. I don’t really have anybody in particular i’m just dying to work with, I let stuff like that happen naturally. Matter fact, Pharrell, when he collabs with artists he brings this classic feeling.

QUESTION: What do you feel is your best song/project ever released and why?

Maui Max: TO ME my favorite song that I released will probably be “Work” produced by the homie Waitmattno. The bars and flow are effortless and when people want to hear me for the first time that is my go to track. It gets people moving. Song is so old but timeless, I had a lot to get off my chest and I was angry because somebody told me that my music was alright so I said i’ll show them how alright I am and boom, everyone’s favorite song by me was made lol. It’s been so hard to recreate something like that.

QUESTION: What projects can we look forward to in the near future?

Maui Max: I have my first full length project dropping summer time 2019 executively produced by the dude I said I met and got me into music LaCo. It’s so dope so far I can’t wait for people to hear it and also see the visuals, it’s a reintroduced me. Don’t have a name for it yet as I like things to come naturally, we just building the product til it’s ready 100%. 

QUESTION: How do you generate new ideas for your music? 

Maui Max: Live. I just speak about what i’m feeling. I feel like you can never run out of ideas if you just being you. 

QUESTION: What motivates you and how do you define success?

Maui Max: My kids motivate me, I got 2 boys, the world motivates me, cause I love it so much but hate it at times. I always wanted to go out in a blaze of glory fighting for what I believe in and that’s the betterment of my people. When it’s my time to go I want my boys to be able to say I was a real G. I want the world to remember and carry my name, I want to set a blueprint for them. That’s success to me, forget about the money give me a platform to say what I feel needs to be said and done to change lives. I’m also motivated by working for other people because I hate it.

QUESTION: How do you describe your music to people and what separates you from other artists in your genre?

Maui Max: I just say I don’t rap like anybody you’ve heard and that’s because I really believe that. Nobody sounds like me and I don’t sound like anybody. Especially people my age and coming up like I am. I rap how I think a dope rapper should approach a beat not what I think everybody wants to hear.

QUESTION: Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful artist?

Maui Max: Music is powerful. There’s definitely blueprints to follow but I think you can pick and choose what you think would work for you, there’s no right or wrong way to do this and that’s the beauty of it, I think people who want to make money come up with all these analytics and cheat codes but if you genuinely want to reach people you just got to be you, be relatable. Say something, help raise these kids through your music. 

QUESTION: In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Maui Max: Hands down Hov, could have been Nipsey if given more time (RIP) but look at where Hov came from and where he’s at. The fact that he’s basically 50 and selling out american tours and can drop a album and it’s a big event alone proves that. When that man talks, we listen.

QUESTION: Which emotion more than any other, currently dominates your music? Joy, sadness, anger or passion etc. , and why?

Maui Max: It’s a mix of everything because I’ve been through so much these past couple of years, it really just depends on how i’m feeling in that moment. I’m human and I display that in the music.

QUESTION: What sacrifices have you had to make, to make your dream a reality?

Maui Max: Giving up drugs, I have my fun, but I started realizing that partying hard and doing things to tear up my body was taking a toll on what I was making when I really thought it was helping. Having to record in a hot ass garage sweating non stop just to get things done that I might not even like. Taking time away from my kids wishing I can be with them more. Spending my last to make sure I get good quality product so y’all can take me seriously. A whole lot more. 

QUESTION: What aspect of the music making process excites you most, and what aspect discourages you the most?

Maui Max: I don’t get excited until the song is done. Most times I already have a pre thought on how I think it will sound and if it doesn’t come out how I thought or want, i’m hurt. So once the main parts of a song is done that’s when I REALLY start to get creative that’s the part that excites me. The writing process can be discouraging sometimes because I can’t always think of something dope to say and I start to overthink. I put a lot of thought into what I put out. Im starting to break out of that though and just free myself and have fun again while still keeping the integrity of the music alive.

QUESTION: Where do you see yourself and your music in 10 years?

Maui Max: Lord willing doing big things, things I always knew I would do, things I never thought I could do. Owning businesses, opening schools, being a real boss. 

QUESTION: What advice would you give to other up and coming artists or people looking to break into the music industry?

Maui Max: If you need to, it’s okay to take a break, don’t kill yourself. I went crazy about this thing a million times, it really messes with your head and that’s why you always see these depressed artists. You got hella time, take it to make the best product possible and not the quickest. Also, know what you doing it for if you want to last long, have a purpose, a goal that music can open the doors for. You think big you’ll be big, we different, don’t let small minded people talk you into thinking you tripping I promise you’re not.

QUESTION: Is there anything else you would like people to know about you or your music?

Maui Max: Everything I say in my music are real emotions and things that I go through whether it’s a hype song or something you can just ride to. You never have to worry about me fabricating anything or being something i’m not; I give you the good and the bad. Some songs may be a cry for help, some may be me just saying i’m good now and I was bugging but you’ll always know its coming from me.

QUESTION: How long have you been making music and how did you get started?

Kindal Tate: I’ve been making music since 4 years old. I would make up songs and perform them for family in our living room. Music has always been played around me at home and thats what began my passion for singing.

QUESTION: Musically, who has been your biggest influence in helping you along your journey and who are your favorite musicians?

Kindal Tate: I would say Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong has been my biggest musical influence and my favorite musicians  are Sza, Masego, Count Basie, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Stevie Wonder, Amy Winehouse, Cab Calloway, Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald.

QUESTION: What artists would you like to collaborate with and why?

Kindal Tate: Sza, Erykah Badu, Masego, Stevie Wonder and D’angelo  because they are insane when it comes to creative lyrics, harmonies and over all they are super authentic as artists.

QUESTION: What do you feel is your best song/project ever released and why?

Kindal Tate: I would have to say Floating is the best song off the EP because that song started it all I was finally in a real cool creative space in my mind.

QUESTION: What projects can we look forward to in the near future?

Kindal Tate: It will be a while till “Diary of a Jazzy Kid” will drop but I will be dropping an EP in June called “Summer Vibez”. 

QUESTION: How do you generate new ideas for your music? 

Kindal Tate: I usually go to the beach, or sit outside and watch the clouds.

QUESTION: What motivates you and how do you define success?

Kindal Tate: Just having the gift to heal people with music how music has healed me is what motivates me. It’s our responsibility as artists to create real art that can help people or change the world. Success is what you make it, for me it’s just constant growth and always evolving musically and as a person and if I just so happen to “make it” then it was  the universe and God’s plan.

QUESTION: How do you describe your music to people and what separates you from other artists in your genre?

Kindal Tate: My music has a jazz feel with a modern twist on any genre I choose to mix it with. I’m not a box type of artist my audience is anyone and everyone if you vibe with it cool and if you don't that thats cool too, no limitations here. 

QUESTION: Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful artist?

Kindal Tate: There is only one key to success and my mom instilled it in me since I was born and that key is to just “BELIEVE”. 

QUESTION: Who is your greatest inspiration?

Kindal Tate: My Family is my greatest inspiration because although we don't have a lot they have given me everything and anything to help support my dream.  In knowing that I have that much support there is no way I’m going to give up because only I can stop myself from being the star that I believe I am.

QUESTION: In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Kindal Tate: I would have to say Erykah Badu cause she is always creating weather she releases it or not and she still does shows all over the place she is an icon.

QUESTION: Which emotion more than any other, currently dominates your music? Joy, sadness, anger or passion etc. , and why?

Kindal Tate: Love is the over all theme of my music because with love you know joy, pain, and all types of mixed emotions that come along with the ups and downs of a relationship or friendships.

QUESTION: What sacrifices have you had to make, to make your dream a reality?

Kindal Tate: The hardest one would be not being around my family as much since I'm always booking shows, rehearsing, going to school and teaching.

QUESTION: What aspect of the music making process excites you most, and what aspect discourages you the most?

Kindal Tate: Coming up with the melody and harmonies are my favorite but getting writers block every once in a while is quite irritating cause I always want everything done now but its all about patience.

QUESTION: Where do you see yourself and your music in 10 years?

Kindal Tate: I see myself signed to TDE creating my own label and many many awards. I also see myself becoming an icon that inspires people to be themselves and make music the way they want. As for my life I really don't want fancy cars or a huge house just a simple beach house with a recording studio in the basement and I would invest my money in creating music and arts programs in schools for low income kids.

QUESTION: What advice would you give to other up and coming artists or people looking to break into the music industry?

Kindal Tate: Never bend or break because of money, be authentic, be humble, be kind, never wait to be ready, invest your time wisely, don't be naive not everybody is here to help you, be yourself, love yourself and believe in yourself.

QUESTION: How long have you been making music and how did you get started?

Shamba: I have been making music since I could write. I started singing in church alongside my family. My grandmother was Pastor and the choir consisted of my aunts, cousins, siblings and mom. I was always singing solely due to the fact that it was around me 24/7. It was the most natural thing for me.

QUESTION: Musically, who has been your biggest influence in helping you along your journey and who are your favorite musicians?

Shamba: Mike has been my biggest influencer on this journey. I was so used to creating by myself so having him come into my life and encourage me to stay true to myself and my craft definitely sparked a confidence to a whole other level that I feel bleeds through every song we create. My favorite musicians change every so often due to the fact that new music drops. However, I definitely will forever love Brandy & Jazmine Sullivan, that love will never change lol.

QUESTION: What artists would you like to collaborate with and why?

Shamba: There are sooooo many artists I would like to collab with. Firstly, I want to collab with every artist apart of the Kalombo family. After that my top 5 is 6lack, Ty Dolla $ign, Drake, H.E.R and Masego.

QUESTION: What do you feel is your best song/project ever released and why?

Shamba: Every new song Mike and I create becomes my favorite so ultimately I feel as though at that moment it’s the best lol BUT if we’re speaking released, I’d say Breathless on Rainbows and Hurricanes is the best song of mine. If only you knew the story behind the song, it still amazes me how I was able to put it in words and add a melody then BOOM add Mike’s crazy dope beat behind it … breathless.

QUESTION: What projects can we look forward to in the near future?

Shamba: We have so many just waiting in the vault, but in the near future you can expect two more Eps following REFLECT as part of a trilogy project.

QUESTION: How do you generate new ideas for your music?

Shamba: My ideas or visions come at the weirdest moments you wouldn’t believe me if I told you. But there is no set formula though, I create when the urge comes and it comes oh so often. My everyday life and situations generate that urge.

QUESTION: What motivates you and how do you define success?

Shamba: My motivation comes from those in my corner and the people that I know my voice has not yet reached. I feel success can only be measured by happiness and love. It is the very difference in waking up to a job that pays well but you hate vs waking up loving what it is you do and the people you are surrounded by. If you have love and a smile in your heart you are far more successful than the richest man.

QUESTION: How do you describe your music to people and what separates you from other artists in your genre?

Shamba: If I had to describe my music, I’d just say it’s real. Real stories, real emotions. I feel the emotion behind it is what separates me from other artists. I spill so much of myself into every word and note, that I think it is close to impossible to not feel it when you hear it.

QUESTION: Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful artist?

Shamba: I’m sure there is a formula to becoming a “successful” artist in this industry of numbers, but for me it’s all about being organic. As an artist if you’re not creating for the enjoyment and for the love of your craft, you are not truly successful. Just be you and you’re successful.

QUESTION: Who is your greatest inspiration?

Shamba: My mother is my greatest inspiration. Her support of my music and both warranted and unwarranted criticism inspires me to push myself to new highs that I didn’t always feel I could. Her believing in my gift helps me daily to break through ceilings in efforts to reach the superstar she deems me to be.

QUESTION: In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Shamba: I don’t really register with one genre but I will say Beyonce is the most influential and successful artist. Her work ethic and execution with everything is so groundbreaking that it would be wrong to not say B.

QUESTION: Which emotion more than any other, currently dominates your music? Joy, sadness, anger or passion etc. , and why?

Shamba: Whew, imma go with Passion. I am a passionate person on both ends of the spectrum. I love hard and you hear that in most of my music but on the flip side… I tell you it gets real. You will get every emotion from me but with all the passion that my body possesses.

QUESTION: What sacrifices have you had to make, to make your dream a reality?

Shamba: I’ve sacrificed time, friendships and approval of those close to me. I decided to pursue music full time, because I know in my soul that this is what God has me here to do. With that though, I don’t believe in plan B’s. Having faith in something is not having a back up plan, that just says that a piece of you doubts and doubt and faith can not coexist.

QUESTION: What aspect of the music making process excites you most, and what aspect discourages you the most?

Shamba: Hearing or seeing an idea of mine come to life excites me most. Whether that’s through visuals, photography or musically … seeing anything I envision come to life gives me an adrenaline rush. Now when someone comes and tears that vision down, it discourages me or when they don’t get the vision. But that’s something I’m working on because like I said, my craft is for me.

QUESTION: Where do you see yourself and your music in 10 years?

Shamba: I can never put a timestamp on this journey, so I’ll just put it like this. I see myself being exactly where God has me to be and executing the hell out of that position.

QUESTION: What advice would you give to other up and coming artists or people looking to break into the music industry?

Shamba: Do not worry about what the next man is doing. Do you. Be you. Stay true.

QUESTION: How long have you been making music and how did you get started? 

Rashè Supreme: I’ve been making music for about 10 years but I only started getting serious about it about 3 years ago. I started by writing poetry about how I feel on topics from school to my household and just the way I feel about certain things.

QUESTION: Musically, who has been your biggest influence in helping you along your journey and who are your favorite musicians? 

Rashè Supreme: My biggest influence along my journey has been my self love and my favorite musicians are Tupac, Biggie Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Jay-Z, And a lot more people.

QUESTION: What artists would you like to collaborate with and why?

Rashè Supreme: Drake Most Definitely, Rick Ross , Meek Mill, Jay-Z , And Jacquees. I love the feeling I get when I hear music from these individuals

QUESTION: What do you feel is your best song/project ever released and why?

Rashè Supreme: Everything I’ve put out is my best. I feel like all of them are different pieces so it would be unfair in a sense to evaluate them all the same.

QUESTION: What projects can we look forward to in the near future?

Rashè Supreme: The Rashè Supreme project lol I’m an artist and just like life I flow. Pre plans never really go all the way to plans with me, so just follow me.

QUESTION: How do you generate new ideas for your music?

Rashè Supreme: What motivates me is everything I ever thought and dreamed of and wanting it to come into existence. Also making the world a better place with all I have to offer. Success to me is just being yourself and being happy.

Marian grew up in a musical family and before getting into the music industry, she furthered her education in international trade, but music has always been what she wanted to do for a living. Outside of music, Marian deeply enjoys sports activities. Marian also struggles with ADD and says “I used to be ashamed about it, but this year I’ve been able to accept every parts of my personality and embrace my perfect imperfections.” This up and coming artist has a talented voice mixed with her own style and accent. QUESTION: How long have you been making music and how did you get started?

Marian Richards: I’ve been making music since the age of 13 years old. I was singing, and writing songs in my room. My sister Angela knew I was a talented kid so she enrolled me at the conservatory of music. This is where I started taking singing lessons, guitar and piano lessons. Then, by the age of 18 I started making gigs in Paris at bars, and café’s.

QUESTION: Musically,who has been your biggest influence in helping you along your journey and who are your favorite musicians?

Marian Richards: When I was younger I used to listen to Ashanti. She was my favorite singer in the 2000’s and I really loved her vibes. Then I started interesting myself into other singers like Alicia keys. I think she’s one of my biggest influences because she really motivates me to improve my piano skills. I love jazz music! I could spend hours listening to Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald and new artists and musicians such as Lianne La havas, and Moses Sumney.

QUESTION: What artists would you like to collaborate with and why?

Marian Richards: 6lack, Tyler The Creator, J Cole, Solange Knowles, Miguel, and Khalid. I just love their vibes and their uniqueness.

QUESTION: What do you feel is your best song/project ever released and why?

Marian Richards: Flamingos is the only song I have ever released…there are more songs to come, but my favorite one is “Roots”. There was a time in my life when I was lost I didn’t really know who I was. But going back to my country helped me find my inner child, who I really am, and it really helped me grow. I feel so good when I go back to South America. My soul is at peace and I’m feeling so good.

QUESTION: What projects can we look forward to in the near future?

Marian Richards: I have two upcoming singles, and visuals! My EP”MOOD” is dropping on June 21st.

QUESTION: How do you generate new ideas for your music?

Marian Richards: I’m a sensitive person and I feel like my whole environment helps me create new songs (colors, smells, landscapes) it all depends on how I’m feeling. The moment when I am able to generate new ideas is when I’m not judging myself. I’m a very curious person. I do listen to every kind of music, (jazz, pop, rock, rnb, bossanova,soul, hip hop.) I also watch a lot a movies and video clips because it helps me a lot for my music.

QUESTION: What motivates you and how do you define success?

Marian Richards: My family motivates me! They really believe in me. My dad is my first fan and supported me since day one. I want to share messages through my music…freedom, peace of mind, and above all encourage people to be themselves. To my mind, success is defined by the positive impact that you have on others.

QUESTION: How do you describe your music to people and what separates you from other artists in your genre?

Marian Richards: My music is a mix of pop and rnb. You will always find that chill, retro vibes in my songs with sometimes caribbean sonorities. I just have my own vibes.

QUESTION: Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful artist?

Marian Richards: Being successful is a combo of hard work, dedication, perseverance and maybe a bit of chance.

QUESTION: Who is your greatest inspiration?

Marian Richards: My mother is my biggest inspiration. She is the kindest and sweetest person that I know, she is always ready to help people. She has a huge level of empathy. She is just an amazing woman.

QUESTION: In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Marian Richards: Khalid, Miguel..,they both have singular style and voices. I think that’s what makes them successful.

QUESTION: Which emotion more than any other, currently dominates your music? Joy, sadness, anger or passion etc. , and why?

Marian Richards: Well, it depends. 2 years ago I would have said sadness, melancholia, passion. Now it is joy and nostalgia.

QUESTION: What sacrifices have you had to make, to make your dream a reality?

Marian Richards: I’ve had to work hard and sleep less, make financial sacrifices and spend less time having fun.

QUESTION: What aspect of the music making process excites you most, and what aspect discourages you the most?

Marian Richards: Promotion and communication are the hardest part for an independent artist. There is so much to do, but writing, composing, top lining, and finding new ideas for my videos is definitely my favorite part.

QUESTION: Where do you see yourself and your music in 10 years?

Marian Richards:  I’d love to write songs, create visual videos for some big artists. I would be professionally and financially fulfilled, and married.

QUESTION: What advice would you give to other up and coming artists or people looking to break into the music industry?

Marian Richards: First of all, you have to know who you are, because when you know yourself, you know where you’re going. Focus is what you need to achieve your goals. Stay grounded, surround yourself with people who support you and have the same mindset as yours, and last thing don’t tell too much about your dreams.

QUESTION: How long have you been making music and how did you get started?

Lex Culture: I’ve been making music officially for about a year now. I started singing in church choir at about age 4. Always loved it, just waited a while to make my own.

QUESTION: Musically, who has been your biggest influence in helping you along your journey and who are your favorite musicians?

Lex Culture: My biggest Influence musically would have to be J.Cole. I love how he always has a message in his music and seems like such a caring person. My favorites would be Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Roddy Ricch, and Drake.

QUESTION: What artists would you like to collaborate with and why?

Lex Culture: Honestly I can only think of one person off the top of my head that I would love to collaborate with and that’s Roddy Ricch. I relate heavy to his music and it motivates me.

QUESTION: What do you feel is your best song/project ever released and why?

Lex Culture: Would definitely be my new single “Feel Me”, because it’s the most I’ve opened up in my music so far and I feel like you can really feel the emotion in the song.

QUESTION: What projects can we look forward to in the near future?

Lex Culture: I’m planning on releasing my first EP Titled “GRINDSZN” around June. It will definitely show my versatility as an artist.

QUESTION: How do you generate new ideas for your music?

Lex Culture: It usually comes randomly, or whenever I’m going thru something. I’ll just start typing in my notes on my phone or writing on paper so I’m feeling what I’m writing at that very moment.

QUESTION: What motivates you and how do you define success?

Lex Culture: My struggle is what motivates me. I’ve dealt with a lot growing up and I’ve always been able to overcome whatever situation I was in. I personally feel like success is when you feel like you’ve accomplished what you know in your heart that you can do. Overcoming every obstacle thrown at you and saying “Yea, I did that.” Being comfortable and confident in your position.

QUESTION: How do you describe your music to people and what separates you from other artists in your genre?

Lex Culture: I describe my music as motivating, music for the soul. What separates me is that I’m not trying to fit in anyone’s category. One thing I’m big on is that I’m not selling sex in my music and I’m letting young women know that you don’t need to advertise sex in order to be seen or heard. I want to spread the importance of self-love and self-respect, not to say talking about sex in music is wrong, it’s just not my lane. I feel like that’s the main reason a lot of people can really respect & feel my music on another level.

QUESTION: Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful artist?

Lex Culture: I feel like as long as you believe in your heart that being an artist is your destiny, that’s the key. Because if you want something bad enough you won’t stop until you have it.

QUESTION: Who is your greatest inspiration?

Lex Culture: Would definitely have to say my mom, she’s the strongest woman I know. She went through so much raising me and my brother on her own and everything that I do, I always have it in the back of my head that it’s for her. She deserves the world.

QUESTION: In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Lex Culture: I would definitely say J.Cole. I feel like he was one of the main people that brought meaningful music back. His music will actually make you think, and it captures the younger crowds as well.

QUESTION: Which emotion more than any other, currently dominates your music? Joy, sadness, anger or passion etc. , and why?

Lex Culture: Passion, because I want to succeed so bad. Nothing in my life has been given to me and I want to prove to myself that I know I can do whatever I put my mind to.

QUESTION: What sacrifices have you had to make, to make your dream a reality?

Lex Culture: I’ve had to make a lot of sacrifices, I’ve been homeless off and on since I was about 12. And as an adult I’ve had to bounce back and forth from couches, alongside working 3 jobs just to be able to cover my bills. I rarely socialize or see my family, because of how much I work. I often guilt trip myself whenever I do have fun because I feel like I shouldn’t be doing any resting until i’m at where I want to be at in life.

QUESTION: What aspect of the music making process excites you most, and what aspect discourages you the most?

Lex Culture: Doing shows excites me the most. I always imagined myself when I was younger performing in front of large crowds and singing my heart out and making the crowd move. I’d have to say what discourages me the most would just be letting down people who I know look up to me.

QUESTION: Where do you see yourself and your music in 10 years?

Lex Culture: I see myself very well established and influential in the music industry. Hopefully producing tracks as well as having a music program for the youth.

QUESTION: What advice would you give to other up and coming artists or people looking to break into the music industry?

Lex Culture: Stay focused, don’t trip off who’s listening and who’s not listening. Be yourself, remain humble and grateful for the good and the bad.

QUESTION: Is there anything else you would like people to know about you or your music?

Lex Culture: Everything comes from the heart.

Having been brought up in church, he was always inspired and encouraged by his parents Lee and Vickie to do great things to lead others to Christ as well as positively impact his community and eventually the world. After the birth of his son Jaden in 2008, he was motivated to start a t-shirt line which has grown beyond the imaginable. 

Hudson describes “Life’s Journey” as an inspirational clothing brand. Chris began his journey by selling t-shirts out of his trunk to friends and family members. The brand has since developed and evolved throughout the years with much more to offer on the horizon. Chris now has his own store front back at home in Kentucky. QUESTION: What sparked you to start your business? How did the idea come about?

Chris: What sparked me was that I always loved fashion & I had a heart to help people. So I remember praying asking GOD to revel my purpose on earth. So after a few weeks of praying, late one night the name hit me “LIFE’S JOURNEY”. Soon after, I made my first t shirt design an eagle and with a huge inspirational quote on the back.

QUESTION: What advice would you give to young people looking to start their own business?

Chris: I would say first take time to get to know what your purpose is on earth. A lot of people jump from business to business because they don’t have a true understanding of what they really want to do. Have a vision for why you’re doing what you want to do. Research & study the market and find ways to disrupt it. Relationships first, business second. Lastly, develop perseverance and patience because their is no such thing as overnight success.

QUESTION: What are some of the necessary skills that you've seen are needed to run a successful business?

Chris: Leadership, Networking, problem/solution solving, Communication & Negotiation and most importantly develop a backbone.

QUESTION: What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?

Chris: In life it’s good to fail because that’s how you truly learn. I can’t really pin point one failure that really sticks out to me. One of my issues early on was ordering a ton of inventory and not really having a true game plan on how I planned on marketing the items. I would get stuck with a ton of items. I found a cut & sew manufacturer that wanted me to do 100 per piece of the same design and same color. That hurt me because I had a limited audience that I was selling to. It’s like once one person wears it the other person doesn’t want any parts lol. Secondly, I would say when I opened my first flagship store, I didn’t have the proper security nor insurance. It was broken into twice and I almost lost everything in the process.

QUESTION: How do you define success and what motivates you?

Chris: Everyone’s definition of success is different; we all aspire different things in life. For me, it is to be able to create legacy for my son and family. What motivates me is when I’m able to use my gifts to inspire others to fulfill their purpose on earth.

QUESTION: What are the overall goals for your business and what purpose do you want it to serve?

Chris: Honestly, at first I wanted to build a huge multi million dollar business but as I started building the brand I felt a ton of joy just serving others with my purpose. My ultimate goal is to open a youth entrepreneur center back in my home town Lexington, KY.

QUESTION: How do you build a successful customer base and how do you go about marketing your business??

Chris: It’s simple, relationship first, business second. I made it a point to get to know everyone personally that supported my business and in return they showed more interest in me. We are rolling out a ton of new marketing ideas but honestly we just try to connect with our audience through the messages that we put on our clothing.

QUESTION: What makes your brand stand out from others in your niche?

Chris: Story telling through fashion.

QUESTION: Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful entrepreneur?

Chris: Shesssh.. I mean if their was a formula everyone would make it lol. I believe that through trial and error and a relentlessness to never give up, you can create a roadmap to becoming a successful entrepreneur.

QUESTION: What is your favorite aspect of being a business owner?

Chris: Flexibility

QUESTION: What sacrifices have you had to make to keep your business running?

Chris: Being away from family is really tough. Investing everything back into the business. Constantly taking new risks.

QUESTION: What company or business do you admire most other than yours and why?

Chris: Nike. Nike to me is the epitome of a lifestyle brand that encourages you to follow your gut.

QUESTION: Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years?

Chris: Where I see myself, not sure. I focus on living one day at a time. One foot in front of the other. With the business I would say exactly where it should be. GLOBAL lifestyle brand.

TJ Upshaw: I’ve been making music since 05/06... I was in my senior year of high school and it all started by just doing hooks for rappers that went to school with me.

QUESTION: musically, who has been your biggest influence in helping you along your journey and who are your favorite musicians?

TJ Upshaw: I don’t know if I can say who had the biggest influence because I studied so many R&B greats. From Motown, 80ʼs & 90ʼs R&B, to a lot of artists from my generation. If I had to pick though, it’ll have to be Tank. Bro a hell of a artist, performer, singer and songwriter! At the end of the day that’s what I’m working towards.

QUESTION: What artists would you like to collaborate with and why?

TJ Upshaw: I would love to work with Chris Brown, Usher, Trey Songz, Sammie, Tank, Eric Bellinger... just to name a few dope R&B dudes!

QUESTION: what do you feel is your best song/project ever released and why?

TJ Upshaw: I think my best project is One 4 Her II - it’s all me. Its flavors to it. All kinds of vibes. It really shows my range as an artist and songwriter.

QUESTION: What projects can we look forward to in the near future?

TJ Upshaw: I will Be releasing my first album 3rd quarter of 2019.

QUESTION: How do you generate new ideas for your music?

TJ Upshaw: Most of my music is just life situations. Lifeʼs feelings. I have ppl that come to me for advice at times... itʼs just so much that gives me inspiration musically. I really just try to make music that people can relate and vibe to.

QUESTION: What motivates you and how do you define success?

TJ Upshaw: Success in my eyes is defined as happiness. If youʼve reached that level of where youʼre completely happy, then congrats. Youʼve made it! My motivation is my family. Being their provider and seeing them smile is all the motivation I need to keep going.

QUESTION: How do you describe your music to people and what separates you from other artists in your genre?

TJ Upshaw: I call it #theVIBEofRnB - itʼs a feel. It creates a memory. Therefore whenever you hear it for the rest of your life itʼll create a vibe. Iʼm not too much worried about other artists in my genre. Iʼm in my own lane.

QUESTION: Do you believe there is a formula to being a successful artist?

TJ Upshaw: Naw no formula. What God has written is written. Just gotta put in yo work.

QUESTION: Who is your greatest inspiration?

TJ Upshaw: One of my inspirations is Big Sean. Coming from where Iʼm from and becoming one of the biggest artist in the world says a lot within itself. Not to mention all he gives back to the city. Thatʼs what itʼs about. Sharing your gift.

QUESTION: In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

TJ Upshaw: I would have to say Chris Brown. Heʼs the modern day MJ! Fasho Fasho!

TJ Upshaw: Passion. I write and record with passion so thatʼs what you hear over the track.

QUESTION: What sacrifices have you had to make, to make your dream a reality?

TJ Upshaw: when dream-chasing you gotta isolate yourself from everybody, sometimes including yourself. Just to really map out how we goin make this thing pop. Once you figure that out you start to build your circle of individuals thatʼs on the same thing you on. So i sacrificed a lot of friendships to pursue this. We still good.. just not to the same extent as before. Iʼm on a mission!

QUESTION: What aspect of the music making process excites you most?

TJ Upshaw: I think the process of creating melodies & writing is lit. Thereʼs sooooo many different ways to say things and get your point across.

QUESTION: Where do you see yourself and your music in 10 years?

TJ Upshaw: in 10 years? A couple Grammys.. multi-platinum albums. Those are just a few goals.

QUESTION: What advice would you give to other up and coming artists or people looking to break into the music industry?

TJ Upshaw: In a world full of fugazziness, BE YOU! Every dream can become reality. You just gotta take the initiative to make it happen.

After graduation, she left everything she knew and traveled out to Los Angeles to pursue her music career. QUESTION: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MAKING MUSIC AND HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

Narde: I have been making music since I was about 17. All my friends made music and I wasn’t any different. It would be a bunch of us in a room just creating, making music, writing, shooting videos, that was what we did for fun. I didn’t start taking myself seriously as an artist until 2 years ago.

QUESTION: MUSICALLY, WHO HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE IN HELPING YOU ALONG YOUR JOURNEY AND WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE MUSICIANS?

Narde: I would say my biggest musical influence is Outkast, I love anything that is just downright different and goes against the mainstream. I am naturally inspired by helping others, I am a giver and I want my music to reflect in a positive helpful way. Helping me along the way, I have some friends who are in the same boat I am, making music and hoping the world loves it. Seeing them not quit is a huge motivation for me. Narde’s music includes an R&B and indie vibe mixed with a futuristic sound.

QUESTION: WHAT ARTISTS WOULD YOU LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH AND WHY?

Narde: In the future, I would love to collaborate with Sango, Little Dragon, The Internet.

QUESTION: WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS YOUR BEST SONG/PROJECT EVER RELEASED AND WHY?

Narde: It’s interesting, what I think is my best song isn’t always peoples’ favorite. The fan favorite right now is “Lover’s Dream”. Which is the first song I wrote taking music seriously. It resonates in a positive way with love and growth. My favorite however, is “Black Diamonds” or “Higher” which have a bit more somber moods.

QUESTION: WHAT PROJECTS CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO IN THE NEAR FUTURE?

Narde: In the near future, you can expect some very eclectic yet futuristic sounds that I am very proud of. I wouldn’t make music if it didn’t offer a different sound. So, you’re going to be getting a splash of newness real soon.

Narde: Most of my ideas from music come from experience, either from myself or others. I am an empath, so it is very easy for me to put myself in other people’s shoes and try to understand what they are feeling. That’s my favorite place to make music from, the perspective of others.

QUESTION: WHAT MOTIVATES YOU AND HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

Narde: I am motivated by the art of it all. Fame scares me, it isn’t natural. I’m not necessarily trying to be noticed, I just want to offer the world a new perspective and some good music. Success for me comes when I know a person has been affected by my music in a way that gets them through there day or out of a bad mood or through heartbreak or even helps them fall more in love.

QUESTION: HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC TO PEOPLE?

Narde: I describe my music to others as smokers music, very groovy and thoughtful. Nothing to twerk to. Just something you can vibe too, it’s calming, hypnotizing. I always do what I want with my art, it’s also pretty deep at times, I try to stay away from trends and that’s possibly what sets me apart.

QUESTION: DO YOU BELIEVE THERE IS A FORMULA TO BEING A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST?

Narde: The formula for being a successful artist should always be do what you love and do it well. The world will catch on.

QUESTION: Who is your greatest inspiration?

Narde: My biggest inspiration is my future self. I want her to look back and have no regrets.

QUESTION: IN YOUR OPINION WHO IS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL AND SUCCESSFUL ARTIST IN YOUR GENRE TODAY AND WHY?

Narde: There is no one out here doing what I’m doing exactly. I haven’t placed myself into a genre so it’s hard to say, who is leading.

QUESTION: WHICH EMOTION MORE THAN ANY OTHER, CURRENTLY DOMINATES YOUR MUSIC?

Narde: Passion drives my music, next is love, then hardship and injustice. I want my music to matter. I want it to be a product of the times and I would love for it to make people think. A lot of music today lacks thoughtfulness. I get that music is an escape, but it has the power to change everything.

Question: What sacrifices have you had to make, to make your dream a reality?

Narde: I have made many sacrifices to pursue music. I left everything I knew in my life back on the east to get the tools I needed to do what I love. Sleeping on couches, in cars, homes with no A/C for months at a time. The hardest thing though, is being away from my family but technology has of course helped with that.

QUESTION: WHAT ASPECT OF THE MUSIC MAKING PROCESS EXCITES YOU MOST, AND WHAT ASPECT DISCOURAGES YOU THE MOST?

Narde: I love the writing process of music, I love hearing a beat and it takes over my entire essence. It’s like time traveling to a place or time and then from there I let that space become me and I just write what I feel. Sharing the music can be discouraging because the vulnerability but that’s also the beauty in it.

QUESTION: WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AND YOUR MUSIC IN 10 YEARS?

Narde: In 10 years, I see myself having done several tours and hopefully at least 4 more albums. But overall, I see myself as a happy being, spreading love.

QUESTION: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER UP AND COMING ARTISTS OR PEOPLE LOOKING TO BREAK INTO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?

Narde: I would advise anyone coming into the music industry to realize, if music is not something you love to the core, then it might not be worth it to you. It takes A LOT of work, dedication and consistency. Make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons and make sure it always remains a labor of love.
