Slick Rick also known as Slick Rick “The Ruler” is one of Hip Hop’s greatest storytellers that ever has graced a mic. His impeccable sound and smooth delivery comes to mind when you think of the rapper. Next month in February, he will receive some flowers for his innovative talent that struck the world in 1988 when he dropped his debut album The Great Adventures of Slick Rick.
The emcee has created some of the most iconic songs in Hip Hop history. The London born rapper has also been considered the most sampled Hip Hop artist of all time. A few known classics from the pioneer’s catalog are “The Show”, “La-Di-Da-Di”, and last but not least “Children’s Story”. Some of the greats such as The Notorious B.I.G., TLC, Beyonce, and Nas have sampled and created hits from the legend’s catalog.
He is adding a significant award to his name from The Recording Academy. Slick Rick will join a very short list of hip hop pioneers who have received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Foundation. The two legendary Hip Hop groups that have reached this achievement are Run DMC and Public Enemy. Slick broke the news to his Instagram this previous week on the January 5. In The Ruler’s 30 year career, this will be his first time getting recognition from the Grammys.
Slick is no stranger to such achievements as he is a VH1 Hip Hop Honors recipient and The Source list him at number 15 on their list of the Top 50 Lyricists of All Time. He is also on the Bronx Walk of Fame as well as immortalized in D.C. in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
His fellow inductees in the class of 2023’s honorees are The Supremes, Bobby McFerrin, Nile Rodgers, Nirvana, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, and the late Blues singer Ma Rainey.
Slick Rick will be honored during a separate Grammy Week ceremony on February 4, 2023.
