As writers across the entertainment industry go on strike, major support from entertainers and fans have poured in.
Hip-Hop icon Snoop Dogg, shared his opinions on the current streaming models that have led to the Writers Guild of America initiating a strike in order to secure better compensation. On Wednesday, May 3 that the California rapper participated in a panel at the Milken Institutes’ Global Conference, according to Variety.
“The writers are striking because [of] streaming. They can’t get paid. Because when it’s on the platform, it’s not like in the box office. I don’t understand how the f**k you get paid off of that s**t” Snoop stated. “Somebody explain to me how you can get a billion streams and not get a million dollars? That’s the main gripe with a lot of us artists is that we do major numbers, but it don’t add up to the money. Like where the f**k is the money?”
The strike makes the first walkout in over 15 years and it could have a huge impact on the entertainment industry over the next year if not resolved properly.
The WGA went on strike after unionized workers raised concerns about inadequate pay with the growth of streaming. Despite negotiations between the writers’ representation and a trade association for the Hollywood studios, they failed to reach an agreement, leading to the call for a walkout.
As a result of the ongoing strike, several popular TV shows in Hollywood, such as "Abbott Elementary" starring Quinta Brunson, and 50 Cent's "Power Book III: Raising Kanan", have halted production.
There is definitely a major need for artists with major followings and platforms to support the writers. In this day of AI and advanced technology, it’s important to protect the true creators of this world and support them as they strike for better changes.
