Wow!! What a night!! The 23rd annual BET Awards, which honors the year’s best performances in music, TV, film and sports was jam packed with plenty of nostalgic performances, memorable speeches and tributes to the late great Tina Turner and this year's Lifetime Achievement Award winner Busta Rhymes.

Led by musical melodies curated by DJ and Producer Kid Capri, the 5 hour long ceremony took place at a packed Microsoft theater in Los Angeles. This year’s ceremony featured live performances from Hip Hop legends like Big Daddy Kane, Master P, Uncle Luke, Trina, Trick Daddy, Ja Rule, the Ying Yang Twins and more… It was truly a celebration of 50 years of Hip Hop.
The past two award shows were hosted by actress Taraji P. Henson, but due to the writers strike, BET like many others are switching to a hostless format. SInger Muni Long took time to acknowledge the importance of writers amid the WGA strike.
“Writers are, in many instances, the glue to the execution of artistry and storytelling. Our ability to extract emotion from performers helping them to articulate their voices and vision to the world is irreplaceable. The protection of the writer is crucial. We simply must protect our intellectual property.”
During the broadcast Latto won Best Hip Hop Female Artist while Coco Jones took home the award for Best New Artist.

“Y’all messing up the bag. Y’all messing up the energy. I don’t like when I talk to these dudes that run these streaming platforms and they talking about, ‘You know, we turning the consumer off because there’s so much little this and little that going on with you rappers.’ We’re gonna stop that. Today on May 22, Idris Elba and his wife, Sabrina Elba, announce a partnership with BBC and CBC to produce "Paid in Full: The Battle for Payback." This compelling three-part docuseries aims to delve into the exploitative practices that have plagued Black artists within the music industry, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
“This is a story that touches all of us. It’s about the people who created the soundtracks of our lives in popular music and the pain of their exploitation. It’s also about bringing the music industry to account for the injustice inflicted on generations of musical talents who have been deprived of their rightful rewards both financially and in terms of status and respect. At the heart of it is the need to make amends — granting acknowledgment and paying back what is due.” Idris said in a statement.
The series will be produced by his production company, Green Door, in collaboration with Zinc Media's production label, Supercollider, and Canadian independent producer, Catalyst.
Green Door, the production company led by Idris Elba, has an impressive track record in scripted TV credits. They have worked on notable projects such as "Hijack" for Apple TV+, the Sky One comedy series "In the Long Run" created by and featuring Elba, and the Netflix comedy "Turn Up Charlie," a co-production with Brown Eyed Boy that was co-created by Elba and also stars him in a leading role.
Tanya Shaw, who serves as the managing director of Zinc Television, spoke more on what Idris is looking to accomplish.
“Far from being a straight music documentary, this series will explore the music industry within a racial context and reflect the history of exploitation within the industry. It will also major in on conversations of structural racism and those who have worked so hard to expose them,” she stated.
Jennifer Dettman, who serves as executive director of unscripted content at CBC, also shared her thoughts on how the series can impact the audience in Canada.
“We look forward to sharing this important series with audiences in Canada, offering a necessary and in-depth exploration of the structural racism inherent in the music industry and its impact over the decades,” she said.
There has been no official date for the production or release just yet but this is a an exciting production for artists around the world as Idris is shining a light on the negative aspects of the industry that has plagued many artists previously.

Keke Palmer Talks Sacrifices and Growth With the Release of Her Latest Album 'Big Boss'
Keke Palmer discusses the sacrifices she has had to make in the entertainment industry to achieve her success and the growth that has come with overcoming obstacles in her career, with the release of her latest studio album Big Boss! We discuss it here!
Keke Palmer drops her latest studio album, Big Boss
By: Omar Cook
Keke Palmer has always been a symbol of Black excellence in the entertainment industry and she is showing no signs of slowing up! On Friday (May 12), Palmer celebrated the launch of her latest album, Big Boss, along with a 40 minute visual album of the same title to go alongside it. A big win for her fans.
It’s been over a decade since Palmer dropped her last studio album, So Uncool, and Keke pulled out all of her creativity for this project. Palmer wrote, directed, and executive produced the film project and the album was executive produced by Tricky Stewart, a Chicago collab. In this day and age, artists need to wear multiple hats to stay on top and Palmer seems to make it look easy!
Keke Palmer recently spoke with Teen Vogue , sharing the importance of her new project and how it displays her journey of growing up in the entertainment industry. The multi-talented 29-year-old has been acting and singing since she was young and has achieved numerous career milestones and accolades. While she attributes her strong work ethic to her success, Palmer acknowledges that she had to make certain sacrifices to get to where she’s at.
“I've sacrificed a lot. I sacrificed my childhood. I sacrificed moments in my siblings' lives, like holidays, theirs plays, their games, just moments in their life. I sacrificed my peace of mind. It is a very anxious career. Most of all, a lot of time — time is the one thing that you can't get back. Time is invaluable. But then at the same time, I could retire or I could take at least years and years and years off and I'm not even 30 yet. You take the good with the bad.”
It’s pretty clear the message Palmer was looking to send with this project, and it’s the message that she is in full control of her career, from an entrepreneurial standpoint.
“When it comes to this being a full-throttle album situation again, it's again the big boss energy. I'm here, I'm ready, I'm taking it. I'm really comfortable with my story, and I'm comfortable enough to share it and own it… I'm only here because of what I went through. It took what I went through with music in order for me to get to this place as an artist.”
In her film, Big Boss, Palmer confronts some of the challenges she has faced within the entertainment industry, from Hollywood to the music world and beyond. The film offers a candid glimpse into Palmer's life like never before. It exposes her genuine perspectives on the male-dominated realms of recording studios and movie sets, while also revealing her vulnerabilities as one of the most brilliant talents of her generation. Palmer doesn’t shy away from discussing her highs and lows and how she overcame each obstacle with perserverance.
“The album I did first, then a few months or so after I started writing the film. We filmed [Big Boss] just a couple of months before Nope. So it was still a crazy schedule, because I was doing that and then I was getting ready for Nope right after. It was definitely hectic, oh my gosh. But every day I felt like I was in a euphoric state, which is insane. I was on this adrenaline high. Even though it was a lot going on, it was a very good experience. I felt like a kid in a candy store. It was really fun. It felt good.” Palmer stated to Teen Vogue.
Keke has had a lot to celebrate this year after welcoming her a newborn son back in February 2023 with her boyfriend Darius Jackson, and the release of her new project is another win for the superstar. Big Boss dropped on KeyTV, which is Palmer’s personal network and can now be streamed everywhere. Check it out below!

After initially canceling the hit drama series, S.W.A.T., CBS has made the surprising decision to renew it for a seventh and final season.
In an exclusive report on Monday (May 8), Deadline revealed that the series led by Shemar Moore will continue, as confirmed in an official statement. Additionally, the 53-year-old actor is being brought on as an executive producer of the show.
In a joint statement put out by Amy Reisenbach, President, CBS Entertainment, and Katherine Pope, President, Sony Pictures Television, they stated “We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for S.W.A.T. and we have reached an agreement to renew it for a final season of 13 episodes to air during the 2023-2024 broadcast year.”
“S.W.A.T. has aired for six seasons on CBS and garnered a devoted following. We are pleased that we found a way to bring it back and give closure to the show’s storylines and characters, which audiences deserve. Once again, we appreciate the talents and efforts of the cast, writers, producers and crew, and everyone who has contributed to the success of S.W.A.T. We look forward to its return next season.”
On May 6, Moore expressed his frustrations about the show being canceled through an Instagram post.
“I got sunglasses on cuz I’m a little bit sad. I’m a lot a bit sad. We got canceled,” he said. “S.W.A.T. got canceled. It makes no sense. Look up the articles, read the articles. We are the best shows on Friday night at 8 for CBS. The last two years we have been killing it.”
He continued on to say “We’ve done nothing wrong. We did everything that was asked for. And let me tell the truth. We’re diverse. Did you know I am the only African American male lead on network TV? Not streaming, not cable, network television. — I’m asking my homies, my fans, and my baby girls, and the rest of the world who follow me or follow the show, follow the cast, my brothers and my sisters: Make some f**king noise. And let them know that canceling ‘S.W.A.T.’ is a f**king mistake.”
This is major news not only for Shemar Moore, but for the entire production as they get to stay employed for another season. The season finale of Season 6 of S.W.A.T., will be released over 2 episodes on May 12 and May 19. The fans get watch excited knowing there will be more in store in season 7.

Halle Bailey recently demonstrated the importance of honoring those who paved the way for you.
On May 8th, the world premiere of The Little Mermaid was celebrated by many, with several famous celebrities walking down the ocean-blue carpet and expressing their views on the movie, including its lead, Bailey.
During her conversations with various media sources regarding young girls and representation, she stated, “I hope that they just know they are worthy. And we deserve to be in these spaces, and I hope that they see themselves and be on the screen. I’m just grateful to be here. There were women before me like Brandy and Anika Rose, who really were the blueprint for me to even be able to be here today. So, I’m just taking this moment all in. I’m so excited.”
Prior to Bailey's well-deserved role as the first Black princess in a live-action Disney remake, a number of talented and soulful singers had already paved the way. In 1997, Brandy made history as the first Black woman to portray a princess for the renowned entertainment company in the film Cinderella, which also featured Whitney Houston.
After a span of twelve years, another remarkable vocalist left an indelible mark in history. Actress Rose made her debut as Disney's inaugural Black animated princess in The Princess and the Frog. She also graced the premiere of The Little Mermaid and had some kind words to say about Bailey.
During her interview with ET, Rose expressed her thoughts on portraying a Disney princess by saying, “It’s very intense in a good way… She’s ready. She knows what to do. She knows who she is. She’s very comfortable within herself. She has a kind spirit, and I don’t think that’s gonna change.”

— Entertainment Tonight (@etnow) May 9, 2023
Black representation matters in films, I believe Halle will have the same impact as the late great Chadwick Boseman in Black Panther. Which will draw huge crowds of Black girls who can see themselves through Bailey on screen.
Much success to Halle and continue to be strive to open the gate for more Black princess in entertainment. The Little Mermaid will drop in theaters on May 26.

As writers across the entertainment industry go on strike, major support from entertainers and fans have poured in.
Hip-Hop icon Snoop Dogg, shared his opinions on the current streaming models that have led to the Writers Guild of America initiating a strike in order to secure better compensation. On Wednesday, May 3 that the California rapper participated in a panel at the Milken Institutes’ Global Conference, according to Variety.
“The writers are striking because [of] streaming. They can’t get paid. Because when it’s on the platform, it’s not like in the box office. I don’t understand how the f**k you get paid off of that s**t” Snoop stated. “Somebody explain to me how you can get a billion streams and not get a million dollars? That’s the main gripe with a lot of us artists is that we do major numbers, but it don’t add up to the money. Like where the f**k is the money?”
The strike makes the first walkout in over 15 years and it could have a huge impact on the entertainment industry over the next year if not resolved properly.
The WGA went on strike after unionized workers raised concerns about inadequate pay with the growth of streaming. Despite negotiations between the writers’ representation and a trade association for the Hollywood studios, they failed to reach an agreement, leading to the call for a walkout.
As a result of the ongoing strike, several popular TV shows in Hollywood, such as "Abbott Elementary" starring Quinta Brunson, and 50 Cent's "Power Book III: Raising Kanan", have halted production.
There is definitely a major need for artists with major followings and platforms to support the writers. In this day of AI and advanced technology, it’s important to protect the true creators of this world and support them as they strike for better changes.

After suffering a medical emergency three weeks ago, actor Jamie Foxx continues to remain hospitalized.
Corinne Foxx, daughter of actor Jamie Foxx, revealed on April 12 that her father had suffered a "medical complication" the day before. The incident happened while Foxx was shooting for the Netflix film "Back in Action" with Cameron Diaz in Georgia. Jamie Foxx is known for his roles in various popular films and shows, including Ray, Sleepless, Law Abiding Citizen, The Jamie Foxx Show, and more!
According to insider sources, neither Jamie Foxx nor his daughter will be involved in the upcoming season of FOX's popular music lyric game show, Beat Shazam despite it being scheduled to start production shortly after Foxx's hospitalization.
"Jamie will not be on this season of Beat Shazam. We're told filming starts today, with a new host. We're also told Corinne, who DJs on the show, will not be on as well—she's been a fixture at the hospital in Atlanta by her dad's side," TMZ noted.
"Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery," Corinne stated, and asked for "privacy during this time."
A few friends in the entertainment industry have expressed their support for Jamie as he goes through this process.
"I think the dope thing is that he's getting better in the situation, and, you know, everybody's prayers, everybody's love, energy, all that stuff is seen and felt. So, in this case, you just want the guy to get out of the situation and to get back on it... So my love, synergy, and energy goes out to him. He’s needed. He’s necessary. I know he knows that, and I know that he feels that because it’s been an outcry and outpour of support in his regard” Kevin Hart stated to per Essentially Sports.

During CinemaCon on April 24th, Denzel Washington debuted the official trailer for The Equalizer 3. The upcoming action film, set to release in theaters on September 1st, features Washington as Robert McCall, a ruthless hitman who dispenses his own brand of justice. Fans of Washington will also see him reunite with Dakota Fanning, who appeared alongside him in the 2004 film Man on Fire.
The trailer begins by showing glimpses of Denzel Washington's character's new life in Italy, where he has distanced himself from his violent past. But circumstances change, and he eventually decides to take action into his own hands.
The team behind The Equalizer 3 includes producers Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Denzel Washington, Antoine Fuqua, Steve Tisch, Clayton Townsend, Alex Siskin, and Tony Eldridge, with David Bloomfield, Tarak Ben Ammar, and Andy Mitchell serving as executive producers. The movie was directed by Fuqua, written by Richard Wenk, and adapted from the TV series created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim. "The Equalizer 3" marks Antoine Fuqua's third time directing in the franchise, having previously directed The Equalizer and The Equalizer 2.
The movie franchise, titled The Equalizer, originated from the CBS series that aired in the 1980s. The first film was released in 2014, and its sequel premiered in 2018. In 2021, CBS relaunched the original series, featuring Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall. The third season of the rebooted series will wrap up on May 21, and the fourth season is scheduled to debut in the fall.
Following the premiere of the film's trailer at CinemaCon, Denzel Washington was unexpectedly presented with a lifetime achievement award by Sony film executive Tom Rothman. “True movie stars matter more than ever,” Rothman said. “They are just rarer than ever. Streaming doesn’t create movie stars, only global hits do.”

Actor, activist, and singer, Harry Belafonte passed away at 96 years old.
On Tuesday morning (April 25), Harry Belafonte's longtime spokesperson Ken Sunshine announced to NBC News that Belafonte had passed away due to congestive heart failure.
Harry Belafonte, who was born in Harlem in 1927, is known as the "King of Calypso" and remembered for his unique style of folk music that reflected his Black and Caribbean heritage. He gained popularity as a musician in his late 20s and early 30s, attracting an international following with his critically acclaimed studio album "Calypso" in 1956. This was also his second album to reach No. 1 on the Top Pop Albums chart, according to Billboard.
In 1958, Harry Belafonte, the performer and activist, addressed a gathering of young people at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. during a march for integration.

During a period when segregation was prevalent and Black representation in the entertainment industry was scarce, Harry Belafonte's rise to fame was a significant achievement. Although other Black entertainers such as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald had broken racial barriers before him, Belafonte's impact was unprecedented, and he enjoyed unparalleled success. For a time, he was the biggest name in music, transcending racial divides and appealing to audiences of all backgrounds.
Harry Belafonte's success extended beyond music recordings; he was also a highly successful concert performer. With his good looks and natural charisma, he captivated audiences with powerful renditions of folk songs from various cultures around the world. His repertoire included lively calypsos such as "Matilda," work songs like "Lead Man Holler," and poignant ballads like "Scarlet Ribbons." By 1959, Belafonte had become the highest-paid Black performer in history, securing lucrative contracts for performances in Las Vegas, the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, and the Palace in New York.

In addition to his musical achievements, Harry Belafonte was actively engaged in civil rights, film, and activism. In 1960, he made history as the first Black artist to receive an Emmy Award for his work on the musical special "Tonight With Belafonte," as reported by NBC News.
Harry Belafonte started to intensify his involvement with the civil rights movement, collaborating with Martin Luther King Jr. NBC News reported that the two first met in 1956 at an event in New York City for activists supporting reform in Montgomery, Alabama. Belafonte also worked alongside Senator John F. Kennedy during his presidential campaign in 1960, and after Kennedy's election, the 96-year-old activist acted as an intermediary between Attorney General Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.
In 1963, Belafonte famously posted bail to release Martin Luther King Jr. from jail in Alabama, during a crucial time for the civil rights movement. Over time, Belafonte's relationship with Martin and his wife, Coretta Scott King, evolved into a close and cherished bond built on trust. Following Martin's assassination, Belafonte was appointed as the executor of his estate.
In her 1969 autobiography "My Life With Martin Luther King, Jr.," Coretta Scott King expressed her admiration for Harry Belafonte. She wrote, “Whenever we got into trouble, or when tragedy struck, Harry has always come to our aid, his generous heart wide open.”

Hulu Set to Produce Documentary on 'Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told'
Hulu announced the release of Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never documentary, executive produced by Jermaine Dupri. We discuss it here!
Freaknik 1996
By: Adonis Armstrong
Hulu’s Freaknik documentary is a highly anticipated upcoming release that will explore the history of the legendary spring break celebration that took place in Atlanta, Georgia during the 1980s and 1990s. This cultural phenomenon was a pivotal moment in African American history, and its impact on music, fashion, and social culture cannot be overstated. With its release, Hulu promises to bring viewers a fascinating and in depth look at the history of this historic event.
Freaknik was started in the mid-’80s in Atlanta as a small picnic during the spring break season for students of local Historically Black Colleges and Universities. By the 1990s, the celebration had outperformed its humble beginnings as a picnic and advanced into a massive street party for what it is remembered for today.
The documentary will feature interviews with the key players who helped to create and shape the Freaknik experience, including organizers, attendees, and musicians. It will also include footage from the actual events, as well as archive material that has never been seen before. Viewers can expect to see rare behind the scenes footage of some of the biggest names in music, such as Outkast, Jermaine Dupri, and Lil Jon, as they performed at Freaknik.
One of the most exciting aspects of the documentary is its focus on the music that was such an integral part of the Freaknik experience. The event was known for its party atmosphere, and the music played a significant role in creating that vibe. The documentary promises to provide a detailed exploration of the music scene during the Freaknik era, featuring interviews with musicians who were there and showcasing some of the most iconic songs of the time.
By 1998, the Associated Press reported Atlanta Committee for Black College Spring Break should no longer welcome Freaknik, citing “sexual attacks, public safety concerns, and violence against women.” Still, the nostalgia is clear in multiple present-day endeavors to reboot the euphoric event, from celebrities and people hosting Freaknik themed birthday parties to celebrations and festivals .
Hulu’s ‘Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told’ will be one of the best documentaries ever in my eyes. To see and relive one of the best black experiences of all time should do record breaking numbers. But, on the other side when you go to far back in the past it usually brings up baggage that should have been left behind. All in all whether you were there or not, this documentary promises to transport you back in time and give you a front-row seat to one of the most significant events in African American history.
