"Magic City: An American Fantasy," a STARZ docuseries executive produced by Drake’s DreamCrew, Jermaine Dupri, and Jami Gertz, explores the iconic Atlanta strip club’s cultural impact on hip-hop, politics, and Black Atlanta history. We discuss it here!

Magic City

By: Joshua Martin

The world famous strip club based out of Atlanta is finally getting the docuseries treatment it deserves. Executively produced by Drake’s DreamCrew Entertainment, Jermaine Dupri and Jami Gertz, Magic City: An American Fantasy will soon be available on streaming. The STARZ network acquired the five part docuseries exploring the legacy of the famous strip club and its influence on Hip-Hop.

Magic City: An American Fantasy is a riveting behind-the-curtain look at one of the most unique places in Black culture. The docuseries’ unprecedented insider access and history unveiled from those who built its empire is a perfect complement to STARZ’s slate of adult, culture-driving shows.
— Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming at STARZ

Since 1985, Magic City aka the “Black Studio 54” has been a legendary Atlanta institution and launchpad for numerous rap artists. The doc will show its meteoric rise to prominence and how it became a safe haven for the culture’s elite such as 2Chainz, Killer Mike, Quavo, Big Boi and countless others.

From politicians to artists, to drug kingpins, Magic City has been a home for a broad cross-section of Black Atlanta for decades. Everyone should know the unbelievable story of this institution and the man who founded it, and STARZ is the perfect partner to bring it to the world. We’re thrilled.
— Creator and executive producer Cole Brown

Magic City: An American Fantasy also tells the story of its founder Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney and the lives of the women who were most responsible for the club’s mystique.

“When our family became the Majority Owners of The Atlanta Hawks, the Barneys were the very first people to welcome us to the city. They reached out to us with open arms and that great southern hospitality, not to mention the fact that Juju Barney and my sons became fast friends. I am honored to be a part of bringing their family’s story to the world. It’s a tale of tremendous heart and hustle! And a true love letter to our adopted home of Atlanta, Georgia!” - executive producer, Jami Gertz

The documentary series first premiered to critical acclaim at the SXSW Festival in 2024 and will make its STARZ debut this summer.

LOS ANGELES, CA - Last night was a vibe at the Rooftop Cinema in downtown Los Angeles as Warner Records rolled out the red carpet for the premiere of NLE Choppa Presents: The Wash. This isn’t just another short film; it’s Choppa's fresh take on the cult classic starring Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, crafted with heart and hustle. At just 21 years old, Choppa is making waves as he co-writes, co-produces, and co-directs, giving us a modern twist on a beloved story.

The star-studded affair brought out the who's who of the scene. Amber Rose, Bia, Dreezy, Sukihana, Kayla Nicole, Skilla Baby, Ray Vaughn, and 310Babii were all there, soaking up the celebratory energy. The evening had all the right elements—complimentary drinks, snacks, and VIP gift bags filled with goodies like cozy blankets, film posters, and custom Wash towels, plus some pre-rolls and edibles to keep the vibe just right.

Before the lights dimmed, Choppa and his go-to videographer Ben Marc took the stage for an engaging Q&A. They shared the realness behind creating the film and how they navigated challenges along the way, reminding everyone that this journey was all about collaboration and creativity.

NLE Choppa Presents: The Wash follows our main man as he juggles being a car wash owner while facing the stress of eviction. It's a comedic homage to hip-hop films we all love, infused with moments that’ll make you laugh and root for him. Expect cameos from heavyweights like Lil Wayne, Sukihana, JP, and Durell Smyle, adding to the fun. And the soundtrack? It’s packed with tracks from his viral project SLUT SZN, keeping the energy high throughout.

NLE Choppa Presents: The Wash (Official Trailer)

Choppa’s artistry is not just about music anymore; he’s pushing boundaries by embracing sexual freedom and supporting the LGBTQ community. He’s carving out spaces for inclusivity and confidence, showing the world that he’s comfortable in his own skin and stands firm in his support for others.

Mark your calendars! The film drops on NLE’s YouTube channel on October 30th. This is more than just a film; it's a statement, and you won't want to miss the chance to vibe with NLE Choppa as he reshapes the game in hip-hop and beyond.

Daughter of George Floyd to Produce Biopic about His Life

The biopic, named 'Daddy Changed the World,' will focus on Floyd's life, including his tragic murder by a police officer in 2020. Check out the full list here!

A film chronicling the life and tragic death of George Floyd entitled Daddy Changed the World is currently in the works. The biopic is set to be executive produced by Floyd’s daughter Gianna Floyd and her mother Roxie Washington. The biopic will apparently not portray the late 46-year-old as a perfect person, but rather a father with human flaws.

George Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020, after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin used excessive force while arresting Floyd, forcefully kneeling on the victim’s neck for more than nine minutes. The entire incident was caught on video in which Floyd could be heard saying “I can’t breathe” while being suffocated by Chauvin. Floyd’s murder sparked global outrage and fueled an entire movement against police brutality.

The following year, Chauvin was convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.

Washington, the mother of Floyd’s surviving daughter, spoke on the impact she hopes her late partner’s story will have on viewers.

We are excited the world will see the real, jovial, and loving George we know. This film will humanize him, embody the essence of his life, and hopefully reignite efforts to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. It’s time for justice and equality for all.
— Roxie Washington

She went on to express her gratitude for the support her and her daughter received in the wake of Floyd’s passing.

We need to make changes swiftly. No other child should lose their father like Gianna did. We thank everyone who stood with us and protested. George’s legacy will live on through this film.
— Roxie Washington

The screenplay for Daddy Changed the World will be written by Gregory R. Anderson. A director has yet to be announced. The film will be made in conjunction with Radar Pictures, 8 Queens Film & Media Productions and Night Fox Entertainment.

In May 2022, U.S. President Joe Biden signed the George Floyd Justice In Policing Act. A change in legislation that in the President’s words is aimed to “deliver the most significant police reform in decades.”

Hollywood mega star Jamie Foxx is tabbed as producer for the upcoming Luther Vandross documentary Never Too Much set to be released in 2025. The film was acquired by CNN Films and OWN after making a huge splash at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Foxx is involved in the project through his Foxxhole Production company. In a statement, he expressed his excitement about uplifting Luther Vandross’s undying legacy in Black culture and music.

Luther is one of our G.O.A.T.s. He’s one of the greatest singers in the history of music. It is truly an honor to be a part of the team to help bring this incredible story to the masses.
— Jamie Foxx

The film will be streamed on Max after it premieres on television via CNN and OWN. Dawn Porter, the director of the Vandross film, shared her thoughts on partnering with the two networks.

I’m thrilled to partner again with CNN Films and OWN to bring this film to audiences. Luther’s music is timeless, his legacy is unsurpassed, and we can’t wait for all of his fans, new and old, to experience his brilliance.
— Dawn Porter, IndieWire
Like so many, I have always loved Luther’s music, but I had no idea of the breadth and scope of his artistry,” Porter added. “I think people will be surprised at how much he accomplished in his tragically short life. It is a joy to be able to share his true story.
— Dawn Porter

Sony Music’s Entertainment Premium Content Division and Sony Music Publishing will also aid in the film’s production along with Colin Firth’s Raindog FIlms. The 101-minute film features exclusive interviews from superfans Mariah Carey and Foxx, along with an extensive recount of one the greatest vocalist of all time’s musical journey.

“The Velvet Voice” won eight Grammys and released 14 studio albums, 13 of which achieved platinum or multi-platinum status. A jingle singer and profound collaborator, Vandross worked with the likes of Roberta Flack, Bette Middler and more. He would sadly pass away in 2005 due to complications from a stroke. He was 54.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the lovely moms out there! A mother’s love is one that should be cherished and appreciated daily. Today is your day and we are honored to share the world with so many beautiful, strong, impactful women. A mother is usually a child’s first teacher, advocate, cheerleader, nurse and therapist. The job of a mother is never finished, even once their child becomes of age. In fact, no matter how much success they may garner, a child always knows where home is.

In addition to remembering the women who gave birth to us, it is also important that we reflect on the other women who raised us! Our TV moms. Everyone has a favorite mother from television or film that they secretly wished were their own. Whether it was with their jokes, the advice they would give, or the genuine compassion they displayed on our screens, these ladies taught us valuable life lessons that reminded us of our own mamas. Today as we reflect on motherhood, 247LC salutes some of our favorite Black moms who are undeniably cemented in African-American pop culture history.

Beyoncè Continues To Break Barriers and Records With The Release of Cowboy Carter

In typical Queen Bey fashion, the release of Cowboy Carter brok the internet and Spotify's streaming records for the most streamed album in a single day. We discuss it here!

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is once again dominating the charts, this time venturing into a new genre: country music. Her latest release, Act II: Cowboy Carter, debuted on March 29th, marking the continuation of the Renaissance project and her eighth studio album. As we all know from the online controversy this one dives deeply into Beyoncé's Texan roots and her affinity for country music.

With an extensive tracklist of 27 songs, Cowboy Carter features collaborations with esteemed figures from the country music scene, including Willie Nelson, Tanner Andell, Shaboozy, Miley Cyrus, Brittney Spencer, Linda Martell, and her daughter, Rumi Carter.

An iconic highlight of Act II is Beyoncé's interpretation of Dolly Parton's timeless hit, Jolene. Her rendition offers a fresh perspective on the classic, reminiscent of the intensity displayed during her Lemonade era. Tracks like II Most Wanted with Miley Cyrus and Smoke Hour with Willie Nelson exemplify Beyoncé's ability to seamlessly fuse different musical styles while maintaining her distinctive sound.

Before the album's release, Beyoncé shared on Instagram that Cowboy Carter had been five years in the making, inspired by a period where she felt marginalized in the country music community. Many speculate this sentiment stems from the controversy surrounding her performance of Daddy Lessons at the 2016 Country Music Awards.

Despite facing criticism, Beyoncé's talent and endorsement from revered figures in country music propelled Cowboy Carter to unprecedented success. In typical Queen Bey fashion, she broke the internet and Spotify's streaming records for the most streamed album in a single day. Cowboy Carter serves as a testament to Beyoncé's refusal to be confined by genre conventions. With each project, she reaffirms that genuine talent transcends boundaries and can not be boxed in. Stream Cowboy Carter now on all streaming platforms.

25 Years Later Juvenile Drops Visuals For 400 Degreez

If you grew up in the Cash Money Millionaire era, then you know why the visuals to Juvenile’s 400 Degreez are a big deal, even 25 years later. We discuss it here!

As a Hot Girl and Juvenile fan, when Juvenile spilled the tea, it took me back to Lakeshore Rollerworld in my little hometown. If you grew up in the Cash Money Millionaire era, then you know why the visuals to Juvenile’s 400 Degreez are a big deal, even 25 years later. Juvie The Great and Mannie Fresh getting back together again to breathe life into a classic hit that is 400 Degreez in an ode to its 25th anniversary is beyond legendary. Originally taking the world by storm with its release on November 3rd, 1998, the album went on to go 4x platinum, selling over 4 million copies and remains his best-selling album to date.

Directed by Diesel Filmz and featuring Mannie Fresh, the video flashes between current-day Juvi and some of the biggest career landmarks of his run. Some might think he’s crazy to invest in making a video for a 25-year-old song, but the numbers say otherwise. Making its debut on YouTube on March 26th, in just 3 days it has already amassed over one million views, displaying that you can always repurpose timeless content and music.

Juvenile - 400 Degreez (Official Music Video)

His innovative nature and strategy didn’t stop at the video! To continue capitalizing on this legendary moment, today the New Orleans lyricist also dropped a deluxe edition of 400 Degreez that includes two new tracks titled Party and We Blowing Money, available on all streaming platforms as you read this article.

Last year, Juvenile ignited the excitement for this upcoming release with one of the most viewed performances on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts. This showcase not only reaffirmed Juvenile's influence but also highlighted the deep roots and vibrant musical culture of New Orleans that continue to inspire artists worldwide.

Juvenile: Tiny Desk Concert

With a major impact like this a decade later, it makes me wonder why none of the 50th-anniversary of hip-hop celebrations acknowledged Cash Money and Juvenile’s impact on the industry from 1997 up until around 2008. The Cash Money era undeniably changed the rap game, mixing transparent storytelling with Mannie Fresh beats we can’t even begin to explain. And let's not forget, Cash Money Music were the OGs of flaunting wealth with tracks fueled with references to fancy cars, designer threads, and the high life, laying down the blueprint for the flashy side of hip-hop we see today. Put some respect on it!

Aside from stunting, Juvenile's relatable bars about street life and personal battles hit hard, and his ability to consistently create amazing bodies of work as a solo artist made him a legend in the game.

Will dropping visuals for classic tracks be a new wave that our favorite pastime artists use to celebrate their discography and even continue building their fan base? We can all admit that music these days does not compare to this unduplicatable era, so is this the perfect time for the greats whose run has respectfully ended to dust off their CDs and mics and bring the essence of real rap back?

Only time will tell, but shout out to Juvenile for recreating this classic moment for the 99 and the 2000 babies. Check out the new video for 400 Degreez and stream 400 Degreez Deluxe on all platforms.

Standout filmmaker Ryan Coogler tapped to produce Universal Pictures’ upcoming Prince musical filled with the late great artist's biggest hit songs. The movie marks the latest Prince-project announced in recent months, with a stage adaptation of the 1984 classic film Purple Rain expected to premiere next spring.

According to sources, the four time NAACP image award winner and Black Panther director has been attached to the project that has been in development since 2018. The upcoming musical is a film from Proximity Media with the script being penned by Bryan Edward Hill. Hill, who is most notably known for his work on various Marvel and DC comics, took to instagram to detail his involvement with the film.

Proximity Media’s Rebecca Cho has been linked to the project as executive producer, additional producers include Zinzi Coogler and the chair of Universal Music Publishing Group, Jody Gerson.

The soundtrack for the untitled film hasn’t been confirmed but Proximity will have exclusive access to “The Artist’s” vast musical catalog.

According to The Billboard Charts, “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince” finished his career with 47 entries on the Hot 100, 19 of which landed on the top 10. Some of which even garnered the coveted number 1 spot on the charts. These hit singles include “Let’s Go Crazy,” “When Doves Cry,” “Kiss” and a few other timeless records.

Unfortunately fans of “The Purple Rain” singer will have to patiently wait for more details. As key elements including the plot and cast remain firmly under wraps.  “The Artist” also starred in the iconic 1984 musical bearing the same name, which also received the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Coogler is currently working on an untitled Warner Bros. film with frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan, which is set to be released in the spring of 2025.

By: Sharmaine Johnson

As '90s babies, we've all been regaled with the legendary tales of the wild escapades that defined ATL during Freaknik in the '80s and late '90s. With only camcorders to capture the madness and no internet to discern fact from fiction, separating reality from urban folklore proved to be a Herculean task. But fear not, for the long-anticipated "Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told" Documentary has finally arrived to set the record straight.

Released on Thursday, March 21st, on Hulu, this documentary, executive produced by the trifecta of 21 Savage, Jermaine Dupri, and Uncle Luke, along with insightful commentary from the very architects of Freaknik, promises to peel back the layers of this cultural phenomenon. With contributions from luminaries such as Lil Jon, Killer Mike, Jalen Rose, Too $hort, Shanti Das, former Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Erick Sermon, CeeLo Green, Rico Wade, Kenny Burns, and a host of others, the film takes viewers deep into the heart and soul of Freaknik.

Through candid interviews and never-before-seen footage, these titans of hip-hop and cultural commentary lay bare the realities of Freaknik, revealing truths that challenge our preconceived notions and shatter long-held myths. From its humble beginnings to its meteoric rise as a transformative movement in cultural history, and ultimately to its demise amidst a tragic twist of fate, "Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told" offers an unfiltered glimpse into a bygone era. Here are 7 mind-blowing revelations from the documentary.

1. The Birth of Freaknik

Freaknik's origins trace back to a modest picnic for college students in Atlanta during spring break, initially supported by community donations and catering exclusively to the collegiate audience from 1982 through 1988. Amidst Atlanta's historically black colleges, it blossomed into a celebration of black culture and community, fueled by the infectious spirit of camaraderie. By 1989, however, the event had evolved, attracting thousands to the city and marking the beginning of its transformation into a cultural phenomenon. Despite its provocative name, inspired by the R&B anthem "Le Freak," Freaknik was never intended as a literal "freak feast," but rather as a joyous homage to the vibrant energy of black culture and connection.

 2. The Founders of Freaknik are not from Atlanta

While Freaknik made history in Atlanta, its original founders, Emma Horton, Amadi     Boone, Monique Tolliver, and Sharon Toomer, from the DMV, sought to bring a taste of Chocolate City to Atlanta—and succeeded admirably. Within the campus, clubs were divided based on city or state affiliations, and the Metro DC club gained renown for hosting the most unforgettable parties.

3. Freaknik Was Southern Rap's Gateway to Global

Freaknik played a critical role in propelling Southern Rap to international prominence. It is a legendary event ingrained in Hip-Hop culture, immortalized in songs, metaphors, and music videos. Back then, radio stations like V103 primarily played R&B music, leaving rap to out-of-town DJs who preferred New York artists such as Erik B and Rakim, LL Cool J, and Big Daddy Kane—much to the dissatisfaction of local artists and musicians.

4. Uncle Luke Put the Freak in Freaknik

Believe it or not, Freaknik didn't always carry the connotations of sexually explicit culture, although it fostered an environment where expression was embraced and celebrated. Originally, it was simply a gathering where students came together to feel connected and revel in the joy of camaraderie. In the documentary, Uncle Luke candidly shared, "I brought the freak to Freaknik. Sh*t … somebody had to do it," noting that his video "Work It Out" [1993] was filmed at Freaknik.

While the essence of Freaknik began to transcend mere picnics and parties prior to The Luke EP, the Miami rapper unquestionably played a pivotal role in elevating the street affair to unprecedented heights, introducing elements of sexually explicit culture that would come to define subsequent versions of the event.

5. The Olympics Sparked The Death of Freaknik

In 1996, as Atlanta prepared to host the Olympics, the city was thrust into the global spotlight, prompting political leaders to scrutinize the annual gathering. The documentary explains how, while the Olympic Games brought prestige to Atlanta, they proved catastrophic for Freaknik. Then-Mayor Bill Campbell, tasked with ensuring a flawless experience for athletes and politicians from all over the world, actively opposed the street party. Concerned officials feared that the celebrations would disrupt Olympic preparations, leading to the closure of freeway exits and streets, resulting in gridlocked traffic that would paralyze the city and planned Freaknik events over the weekend.

6. A Different World Took Freaknik National

Because there was no social media or savvy cell phones to share information back in the 80’s this group of dedicated students were able to take a local event global by world of moth. a 1989 episode of the Cosby Show spinoff set at the fictional HBCU Hillman College helped put Atlanta’s Spring Break event in the national spotlight when two of the sitcom’s characters sneak off to attend a Freaknik concert. The previous year, Morehouse Man Spike Lee’s shot-in-Atlanta School Daze also helped to popularize the HBCU experience.

7. Outkast got their big break at Freaknik

Andre 3000 confidently stated that, despite the dominance of East Coast artists and R&B on local airwaves, the South had found its voice. OutKast's timing couldn't have been better, as they released their debut album "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" during Freaknik week in 1994, just as the event's traffic was at its peak. With thousands of college students stuck in traffic, LaFace Records' street teams seized the opportunity to distribute free cassette samplers of the album to a captive audience. The transmissible beats of "Player's Ball" quickly spread from downtown Peachtree Street to Buckhead's Peachtree Road, causing a seismic shift in the Southern hip-hop landscape.

As the credits roll and the dust settles, viewers are left with seven eye-opening revelations from this documentary. It's a journey that transcends nostalgia, inviting us to reevaluate our understanding of Freaknik and its enduring impact on American culture. So sit back, grab your popcorn, and prepare to have your mind blown by the untold truths of Freaknik. Stream it now on Hulu.

Beginning your acting career can be an exciting yet daunting journey. While the entertainment industry offers endless opportunities, navigating the path to success requires careful and strategic planning.

Of course we all want to be the next biggest star, Oscar winner, and booking all of the top roles, but we have to start from somewhere. Here are four essential tips to help you begin your acting career on the right foot!

1. Enroll in Acting Classes

One of the first steps to beginning your acting career is by developing your skills through professional acting classes. These classes provide invaluable opportunities to gain practical experience, refine your talent, and build a strong foundation in acting techniques. Whether you're a complete novice or have some experience in the field, acting classes offer a supportive environment where you can learn from seasoned instructors and fellow aspiring actors. By immersing yourself in acting classes, you'll not only develop your craft but also network with industry professionals and discover new opportunities for growth.

To begin your journey with acting classes, check out 247LC Film Academy.

2. Invest in Professional Headshots

Acting is a competitive environment, and, first impressions matter. Professional headshots serve as your calling card in the industry, showcasing your unique look and personality to casting directors and talent agents. Investing in high-quality headshots is essential to making a memorable impression and increasing your chances of landing auditions. When choosing a photographer, choose someone with notable industry experience in capturing headshots for actors and performers. Ensure that your headshots accurately represent your age range, casting type, and potential roles, as you will need headshots to match certain character types.

3. Build a Professional Actor Reel

A video reel is a powerful tool for actors to showcase their talent and versatility to casting directors and agents. If you don't have professional reel footage yet, you can create your own by filming yourself performing 2-3 monologues or scenes. Use a high-quality camera, such as an iPhone, and make sure that you have good lighting and sound quality. Choose monologues or scenes that showcase your acting range and personality. Once you have your footage, edit it together with the most exciting scenes first, and include clips that showcase your talent. A great video reel can significantly increase your chances of receiving auditions and landing roles. As you begin to book more projects, update your video reel to reflect your current talent.

4. Create a Profile on Casting Networks

In today's entertainment industry, casting networks have become the primary tools for actors seeking auditions and casting opportunities. Platforms like Backstage, Casting Networks, Actors Access, and central casting allow actors to create online profiles, upload headshots and resumes, and apply for auditions across various projects. By creating a profile on casting networks, you gain access to a vast network of casting calls, ranging from film and television productions, short films, to commercials and theater gigs. Be sure to regularly update your profile with recent headshots, credits, and demo reels to showcase your skills and experience effectively. Actors should make time at least twice a day to self submit to casting networks to begin receiving auditions.

Starting your acting career requires dedication, perseverance, and hustle. By enrolling in acting classes, investing in professional headshots and a reel, and creating profiles on casting networks, you'll set yourself up for success and take significant strides toward achieving your dreams in the world of acting. Acting is a journey and not an overnight process. Stay diligent to your goals, train your talents in class, and persevere through the up and down moments that come with working in a highly competitive industry.
