As the world continues to grieve the loss of Tina Turner, the iconic Queen of Rock and Roll, her birthplace of Brownsville, Tennessee, announces its plans to preserve her legacy. As previously covered Tina passed away on May 24th at the age of 83.
Mayor Bill Rawls Jr., in an article released by TMZ on Saturday May 27th, revealed his plans to build a statue commemorating Tina Turner in Brownsville's Heritage Park, located close to Carver High School where the renowned rock and roll hall of famer attended during her residency in the town. “When Tina stepped on stage, she owned it. We want this statue to represent that passion. Tina was an inspiration to the entire world… She showed the people of Brownsville no matter where you start, you own your story about where you end up,” Rawls stated.
Originally named Anna Mae Bullock, the songstress known for "Private Dancer" adopted a new identity as she achieved stardom as one half of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Their intense relationship was depicted in the 1993 biopic What's Love Got to Do With It? featuring the legendary Angela Bassett. While the duo earned a Grammy together, Tina's solo career soared to even greater heights, collecting eight Grammy wins and numerous American Music Awards, among other notable achievements.
Prior to her passing, Tina Turner's hometown acknowledged her remarkable accomplishments by establishing the Tina Turner Museum, an institution inaugurated in 2014. “Haywood County has lost a legend. Please join us for a twilight memorial to honor her legacy,” as stated on the official website of the building, the event took place on Sunday May 28th at 7 p.m., according to the announcement "on the premises of the Tina Turner Museum."
With the news from Brownsville, Tennessee planning to build a statue in Tina Turner's honor further amplifies the significance of her legacy. As her iconic songs continue to captivate audiences, the statue will serve as a lasting tribute, ensuring that her impact on music and culture remains eternally celebrated. Tina Turner's memory will be forever cherished in her birthplace. May she rest in peace, knowing that her profound influence will endure through this amazing gesture.
