After nearly a year-long hiatus from the music scene, BIG JD returns with his latest project Turning Back Time in what he promises is his best work yet. The Jackson-born artist, known for his sharp lyricism, took a break to recalibrate both personally and artistically. Now, he’s back with a project that he promises will solidify his place in the local hip-hop scene.

This project is something like my “welcome back” from nearly a year long break I took from releasing music. In the music itself, I reflected on a lot of the experiences I went through and lessons I learned in the past year.
— BIG JD

Scheduled for release on November 13th, Turning Back Time is a deeply personal exploration of the artist’s journey, while pushing the boundaries of the genre. The new project also explores themes that resonate deeply with his fanbase, such as resilience, mental health, and the ups and downs of everyday life. Each track seems to be meticulously crafted and is both raw and poetic.

Expect the unexpected. Over that year I took off from dropping, I was still in the studio heavy recording new music and experimenting with new sounds. I’m learning to open up a bit more than I already have in my songwriting and making music that connects with my audience on a deeper level than before.
— BIG JD

Showcasing a more mature sound that reflects his growth over the past year, his break from the music scene, allowed him to find clarity and inspiration for the project.

I can humbly say this is some of my best work yet. It’s always my goal to progress and be better than last time. I feel like the music was good before but it just had potential. In my time off from releasing, I learned new strategies of creating art and visuals that attract the right crowd and marketing and promoting the music so that it gets to as many of those people who need to hear it as possible.
— BIG JD

With his unique blend of vulnerability and energy, BIG JD is already gaining momentum across the South. Fans can expect live performances and appearances around the state soon, where he’ll share these new tracks that are sure to become anthems for Mississippi’s hip-hop community.

In a recent interview with The Sacramento Bee, the New York Mogul 50 Cent announced a collaborative partnership between his G-Unity Foundation and the Sacramento Kings, resulting in the establishment of the Kings and Queens Rise Co-Ed Youth Sports and Mentoring League.

“The fastest way to achieve what you’d like to achieve is not necessarily the right way,” Jackson stated. “So a lot of the temptation is to go in the wrong direction to achieve what you want when you’re younger. This is why these programs are effective.”

On Monday, he took to Instagram to share the link to the article, with the caption. “It’s a great program King & Queens rise. I had fun hanging out with the kids, if we keep them active, they won’t go get in trouble.”

During the interview itself, 50 Cent commented, “I think idle time is the devil’s time. Especially in inner cities where you got so many different distractions, so many different influences, positive and negative.” He also added: “They get a chance to be part of that team effort. I think it teaches them lessons that are priceless in the early stages.”

This isn't the first collaboration between 50 Cent and the Kings' organization, as his beverage company, Sire Spirits, is already an official partner of the team. The interview coincides with 50 Cent's upcoming tour, which might potentially be his last.

During a recent Instagram post, 50 Cent revealed that his upcoming Final Lap Tour could potentially mark his final worldwide tour. “Because ticket sales are doing so well they’re adding new markets so the UK, North America, and possibly Australia will be in there. I gotta get to Africa, I got a lot of spots I gotta hit before I be done, because this is the Final Lap Tour. I won’t be running around like this no more,” he expressed. He also stated, “I gotta do my film and television stuff and got a lot of other things going on behind the scenes that I gotta work on. So I won’t be out touring as much as I’ve been touring… I’m having fun this time because it’s set up to enjoy myself, we not feeling pressure.”

By: Adonis Armstrong

Introducing Can You Dig It? - an innovative audio docu-drama presented by Chuck D, a renowned hip-hop legend and inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This captivating series dives into a rarely told narrative that played a pivotal role in giving birth to a global artistic movement. Premiering on August 10th as a 5-part Audible Original, it coexist with the historic 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

The journey begins with the tragic murder of Cornell "Black Benjie" Benjamin, a prominent member of the influential Ghetto Brothers gang in the south Bronx in 1971. Discover how Benjamin's peacemaking efforts sparked the historic Hoe Avenue peace meeting, a significant truce among rival gangs that paved the way for the emergence of hip-hop culture. Today the City of New York will honor the memory of Cornell Benjamin by renaming the intersection of E. 165th Street and Rogers Place in the Bronx as "Cornell 'Black Benjie' Benjamin Way," marking the exact location of his fateful incident. The cast, crew, and production team of Can You Dig It? will proudly attend the street renaming ceremony, joining the Benjamin family and supporters in commemorating this special recognition.

This compelling series surrounds a fusion of scripted dramatic sequences and insightful commentary from admired cultural figures, including renowned street photographers Joe Conzo and Henry Chalfant, former Black Panther Joseph Mpa, and the pioneering emcee of hip-hop, Coke La Rock. Additionally, it incorporates interviews with family members and experts, cinematic score, and archival recordings. The scripted cast represents the vibrant diversity of the borough they proudly hail from, with a predominantly Black and LatinX ensemble that showcases emerging talent from the Bronx and its surrounding regions, along with the active contributions from local community arts programs.

Can You Dig It? attempts to shine a spotlight on the steady resilience of a community, emphasizing the triumph of peace over violence and celebrating the often overlooked heroes who have altered the course of history. The series dives into a pivotal era of change and unrest in America and New York City, specifically during the late 1960s and early 1970s. It examines the prevailing circumstances and policies that contributed to profound urban decay and the rise of gang activity in the Bronx, such as discriminatory housing and zoning laws, as well as the construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway.

Chuck D explains the central theme of Can You Dig It? during the show, stating: “No death, no peace; no peace, no Kool Herc party; no party, no hip-hop.  Black Benjie is an unsung hero…the direct correlation between the peace treaty and the birth of hip-hop is clear. There’d be no Public Enemy without this story.”  The historic Hoe Avenue peace meeting of 1971 not only enhanced safety in the Bronx but also facilitated a vibrant exchange of ideas, blurring the boundaries of gang territories. As a testament to this transformative period, just two years later, the renowned Kool Herc Back-to-School party unfolded at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx.

Set to take place on June 7, the display of Tupac Shakur's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame will be a emotional tribute, taking place just a little over a week before what would have been his 52nd birthday on June 16.

Starting at the Baltimore School for the Arts, Shakur studied a diverse range of disciplines, including acting, poetry, jazz, and ballet. In the initial stages of his career, Shakur adopted the name MC New York before later transitioning to the iconic moniker 2Pac while being a part of the rap group Digital Underground.

Shakur started out as a background dancer/roadie for Digital Underground in the early 90s. He finally got a chance to grace the mic on a worldwide stage when he was offered to be feature on Digital Underground’s “Same Song,” from the movie Nothing But Trouble. He also made a appearance in the movie as well.

After gaining some attention from “Same Song” Tupac showed his versatility by portraying one of the most rememberable characters Bishop in the movie Juice. During his time filming he was working on his debut album 2Pacalypse Now, which generated both critical acclaim and controversy upon its release. Some praised Tupac's lyricism and social commentary, while others criticized the album for its explicit language and confrontational approach. Nevertheless, it laid the foundation for Tupac's subsequent albums and established him as a significant voice in hip-hop.

Afterward, he proceeded to release three additional albums before his tragic death at the age of 25. Each of these albums achieved notable success on the Billboard 200, with Me Against the World and All Eyez on Me reaching the top of the chart. In the wake of his passing, Shakur's mother established Amaru Entertainment, in collaboration with Interscope Records, leading to the release of six posthumous studio albums.

In 2017, Pac achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first solo hip-hop artist to be honored with induction into the esteemed Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to his musical accomplishments, Shakur showcased his acting skills through more notable performances in films such as Poetic Justice, Above The Rim, Gridlock'd, and Gang Related.

The ceremony for the unveiling of the Walk of Fame star will be conducted by renowned L.A. radio host Big Boy, with notable speakers such as director Allen Hughes (known for the Hulu documentary series Dear Mama), writer Jamal Joseph, and Tupac's sister Sekyiwa "Set" Shakur, who will graciously accept the star on his behalf.

Grammy award-winning rapper Future has consistently demonstrated his commitment to giving back to the Atlanta community, with initiatives such as hosting a Christmas shopping spree, renovating his high school's weight room, and establishing a scholarship for incoming college freshmen. His most recent endeavor focuses on providing students in Atlanta with the necessary skills and resources to pursue successful careers in STEM fields.

Collaborating with the Freewishes Foundation, the acclaimed rapper known as Future Hendrix has opened a cutting-edge STEM lab aimed at providing Atlanta students with exceptional learning opportunities. This state of the art facility offers interactive classes and mentorship programs in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, promoting access to often neglected areas of study in underserved communities. Situated in Bessie Branham Park, Kirkwood, the same neighborhood where Future himself grew up, the lab is committed to supporting aspiring students who aspire to pursue careers in STEM.

The I Am A Dreamer S.T.E.A.M. Lab was revealed by the foundation, providing an exclusive sneak peek that was shared through a heartfelt Instagram post, which can be seen below. “Our soft opening was nothing short of amazing, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact that this will have on the community,” the caption stated. “We’re so excited to be able to share our new sleek and innovative lab with the students of Atlanta. The kids in the Kirkwood area will now have the opportunity to receive access to S.T.E.A.M. education.”

“It’s important that all students receive access to STEM education regardless of their background,”the rapper stated, per AfroTech. “Our Freewishes Foundation, with the support of the 2K Foundations, has helped make this possible in our Atlanta community. We’re thankful for their commitment to support our initiative.”

Sharing a similar viewpoint, Tia Wilburn, Executive Director of the Freewishes Foundation and sister of Future, expressed the logic behind incorporating arts education into the lab's curriculum alongside science and math, as commonly known as STEAM. Wilburn emphasized the importance of offering a well-rounded educational experience that recognizes the value of creativity and artistic expression within STEM disciplines.

“We are creating a science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics lab as an extension of Freewishes’ educational initiative,” Wilburn shared. “We wanted to add art because both Future and I support creativity.”

“Our objective in providing educational opportunities is to ensure inclusive and quality education for all students regardless of income and background,” she continued. “There is a major gap in STEM education that impacts marginalized communities, and we want to close that gap so that no child is left behind.”

It's dope that Future and his team are giving back to their community. That's what it's all about: giving back and providing necessary tools for Black and Brown kids to thrive.

Over the last fifteen years, Rick Ross has built an spacious property in Fayetteville, Georgia, which features farm animals and hosting an annual car show. Currently, the Maybach Music mogul aims to level up and assume a leadership role within his community.

On May 16th, Rick Ross went on his Instagram stories to reveal his upcoming plans. “I love Fayetteville so much. Next year, I’m running for mayor,” Ross stated. “That’s right. The boss Rick Ross is running for mayor of Fayetteville. I want to know how many votes did it actually take to vote in the mayor of Fayetteville. I need to know that ’cause we gon’ become that. We gon’ make that happen, and we gonna have a good time.”

Following the rejection of Rick Ross' permit application to host his annual car show at his Promise Land estate on June 3, the CEO is now announcing his candidacy for a local government position. WSB-TV reported that Ross' neighbors expressed concerns about the traffic caused by last year's car show, leading them to approach the Fayette County Board of Commissioners and gather signatures on petitions calling for the cancellation of the event.

The upcoming mayoral election in Fayetteville is scheduled for November 7, 2023.

Ross posted on his Instagram, announcing that the show is back in business with the caption stating, “SEE YOU JUNE 3RD!” I believe this is a great opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy a wonderful time at the show. He also posted another post earlier today previewing the event. Check it out below.

Oakland is Honoring Tupac Shakur with a Street

Oakland is set to rename a portion of MacArthur Boulevard to Tupac Shakur Way to honor the late rapper's legacy. We discuss it here!

During the time he resided in the Bay Area, Tupac Shakur created his powerful debut studio album 2Pacalypse Now, solidifying his position as a prominent West Coast rapper. Shakur acknowledged Oakland as the source of his inspiration and credited the city for honing his skills in the "Game." I believe everyone should understand the “Game,” either you have it or you don't.

The City Council is set to vote on Tuesday for the renaming a piece of MacArthur Boulevard, stretching from Grand Avenue to Van Buren Avenue, as Tupac Shakur Way. This item has been included in the consent agenda, indicating that it will be voted on alongside other matters without further conversation. In the past, Oakland has renamed streets to honor respected figures such as Peter Van Kleef, Huey P. Newton, Dorothy King, and Too Short, highlighting the city's recognition of admired artists, activists, and community leaders.

Born in 1971 as Lesane Parish Crooks in Harlem, New York, 2pac’s parents, Afeni Shakur and Billy Garland, were devoted members of the Black Panther Party. Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, and Marin City, California, it was in Oakland where 2Pac career gained momentum as he connected with the hip-hop collective Digital Underground. He first started working as a roadie and backup dancer before working on his own rap career, which ultimately led to the release of his own records that continue to have a great impact today.

Oakland has previously paid tribute to 2Pac on multiple occasions. In 2016, city officials designated June 16 as Tupac Shakur Day. Before that, the community has celebrated Shakur's everlasting legacy through various gatherings, such as a commemorative event in 2012 that marked what would have been his 41st birthday.

“Tupac Shakur’s legacy will continue through his contributions in art and social outreach, through his family and fans, touching countless lives of children and elders over the years while alive and after his death, taken too young by gun violence,” stated by Councilmember Carroll Fife.

It’s only right I leave ya’ll with some “Words of Wisdom” from 2Pacalypse Now.

Billionaire JAY-Z, renowned for his numerous performances in New York City, is now seeking to present a fresh form of entertainment upon the city's most vibrant plaza.

A plan has been presented by the Grammy Award-winning artist through Roc Nation on May 11th, proposing the establishment of a casino at Times Square. This announcement coincides with Roc Nation's revelation that a gaming license would soon be granted to New York City, as confirmed by a letter from the company, which cites the passage of a bill in the state legislature.

JAY-Z's company provided a comprehensive statement to New York, outlining the reasons why it deserves to be granted the license in preference to other contenders. In a statement, “The winning licensee must always put the well-being of New Yorkers at the top of their agenda and do right by its residents. This is too important of a moment in our city illustrious history."

Caesars Palace, the resort that Jay-Z is seeking to bring to New York City, is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike in Las Vegas. Known for its luxurious amenities and top-notch entertainment offerings, the resort has become a hallmark of the Las Vegas Strip.

Should they be granted the license, Roc Nation unveiled their proposal to attract more tourists to NYC, enhance public transportation, support local businesses, and provide opportunities for all. The company emphasized that their bid includes a commitment of $115 million towards diverse theater programs, such as offering childcare services for Broadway employees and their families.

While the bid is still pending approval and anticipated to be chosen by the state of New York by the end of the year, many New Yorkers should feel excited about the prospect of having a world-class casino resort in their city. However, as usual, there may be some who don't want the casino due to concerns about increased traffic in an already busy area. If Roc Nation is granted the license, it could signify a new chapter in the city's entertainment history, with Jay-Z leading the industry's expansion into the world of gambling.

In a remarkable tribute to the late pop superstar, Prince, the state of Minnesota has taken a heartfelt step to honor the musical icon. On May 9, Governor Tim Walz signed a bill using purple ink, designating a seven-mile section of highway to pay tribute to the renowned singer. The highway leads through the Minneapolis suburbs of Eden Prairie and Prince's hometown of Chanhassen, passing by his famed Paisley Park estate. This extraordinary gesture serves as a lasting tribute to the indelible impact Prince made on the world of music. The purple-clad signs that dot the expressway serve as a constant reminder of his unparalleled talent and enduring legacy.

Previously identified as Minnesota Highway 5, the local drivers will now have the privilege of cruising along the Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway. In a unique twist, instead of ordinary road signs, the expressway will be adorned with purple signs, financed by Prince's devoted friends and fans, as reported by The Associated Press.

Last Thursday May 4th, the legislation was successfully passed by the Minnesota Senate with a vote of 55-5, after which it was forwarded to the governor for his signature. The bill had previously received unanimous approval from the state House on April 21, coinciding with the seventh anniversary of the artist's passing.

One of the most striking aspects of this dedicated highway is that it passes by Paisley Park, Prince's iconic residence and creative sanctuary. Situated in Chanhassen, this sprawling estate served as a central hub for Prince's musical explorations and innovations. It is where he recorded numerous albums and hosted legendary parties and concerts. Now, as drivers cruise along the Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway, they will have the privilege of passing by this iconic symbol of his artistic journey.

Annually, Paisley Park commemorates Prince's life by organizing a celebration on his birthday in June, which has been a tradition since his demise. The upcoming celebration, scheduled for June 8-11, will showcase unreleased music from the legendary artist, along with live performances by both local talents and renowned figures such as Chaka Khan and Chuck D.
