After nearly a year-long hiatus from the music scene, BIG JD returns with his latest project Turning Back Time in what he promises is his best work yet. The Jackson-born artist, known for his sharp lyricism, took a break to recalibrate both personally and artistically. Now, he’s back with a project that he promises will solidify his place in the local hip-hop scene.
“This project is something like my “welcome back” from nearly a year long break I took from releasing music. In the music itself, I reflected on a lot of the experiences I went through and lessons I learned in the past year.”
Scheduled for release on November 13th, Turning Back Time is a deeply personal exploration of the artist’s journey, while pushing the boundaries of the genre. The new project also explores themes that resonate deeply with his fanbase, such as resilience, mental health, and the ups and downs of everyday life. Each track seems to be meticulously crafted and is both raw and poetic.
“Expect the unexpected. Over that year I took off from dropping, I was still in the studio heavy recording new music and experimenting with new sounds. I’m learning to open up a bit more than I already have in my songwriting and making music that connects with my audience on a deeper level than before.”
Showcasing a more mature sound that reflects his growth over the past year, his break from the music scene, allowed him to find clarity and inspiration for the project.
“I can humbly say this is some of my best work yet. It’s always my goal to progress and be better than last time. I feel like the music was good before but it just had potential. In my time off from releasing, I learned new strategies of creating art and visuals that attract the right crowd and marketing and promoting the music so that it gets to as many of those people who need to hear it as possible.”
With his unique blend of vulnerability and energy, BIG JD is already gaining momentum across the South. Fans can expect live performances and appearances around the state soon, where he’ll share these new tracks that are sure to become anthems for Mississippi’s hip-hop community.

Mississippi rapper, BIG JD, dropped his debut album titled Perfect Timing! The title depicts who BIG JD is becoming as an artist, a hard worker, as he is doing everything under the sun to rise in the rap game and grow as an artist.
“I’m most often recognized for my music, but I consider myself an aspiring creative across all mediums. I’m a native of Jackson, Mississippi where I currently live and attend Jackson State University. Since I can remember, I’ve carried a love and interest in music that shaped the life I’ve made for myself and drives me to get up everyday and make the most of the opportunities I’ve been granted.”

BIG JD opens up about changing career goals after injuries plagued him from pursuing a football career.
“It was all a matter of timing. Playing football for Jackson State University was a dream I’ve had since a kid, just like pursuing my career in music. Unfortunately during my time playing college football, I endured injuries that forced me to reconsider football as a long term career. The platform I made for myself as an athlete laid the perfect slate to start my journey into music, and when the opportunity presented itself, I took it without a second thought. ”
The album features 9 tracks with 1 solo feature from another rising artist, Ant200. Our favorite track is “Sacrifices” where he opens up about his life of trails and tribulations.

“The title of the album “Perfect Timing” it came to me in a period of time where I was focused on self-reevaluation and developing as an artist and person.”
His previous projects, two EP’s Big Tape and Big Tape II, showed that BIG JD is unquestionably an artist that should be on everyone’s radar but this project shows his growth in production as well as lyrically.
“I first started recording in October 2021, so the early months of 2022 saw me taking the necessary steps to build a credible image and successful career. Initially, Perfect Timing was just a single that I released entailing the side of success most people don’t see: the work. But the reiteration in advice to keep faith and consistently work towards my goal over time until the fruits of my labor are reaped led me to curating a 9-song project followed by another 9-song deluxe version, both titled “Perfect Timing”. My belief is that by ensuring your actions align with your goals and keeping a positive attitude and work ethic, everything you dream of in life will come to you when the timing is right.”
Even with the release of this album, BIG JD has already dropped a deluxe and planning to release more content!
“The Deluxe version to my project “Perfect Timing” released in November and is available on all streaming platforms now. I’m also currently pushing out accompanying visuals on YouTube for the tracks on the project. All of my new content can be found @1bigjd across all streaming and social media platforms.”
