Johnson C. Smith University, a historically Black university located in Charlotte, North Carolina, has honored Anthony Hamilton with an honorary doctorate of fine arts in recognition of his achievements.

On Sunday May 21th, Hamilton received this exceptional honor at the Bojangles Coliseum on the university campus. To mark this significant achievement, the singer took to Instagram to share the memorable moment with his fans.

The video captures Hamilton standing on stage, his face beaming with pride, as he accepts his doctorate. “Introducing Doctor Anthony Cornelius Hamilton (Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts). THANK YOU Johnson C. Smith University and all who made this special moment possible,”Hamilton penned in his caption.

Like his former So So Def CEO Jermaine Dupri and Bay Area legend E-40, Hamilton now joins a prestigious roster of celebrities who have been awarded honorary doctorates in recent months. Usher, in particular, received his honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music, adding to the list of notable recipients.

Hamilton praised the individuals making up the class of 2023 and offered them uplifting words of encouragement as they set forth on a new chapter in their lives. “You’ve also overcome the pandemic. You’ve navigated remote learning, and I did too with my kids. You made it through this virus that could have taken your life and almost took mine,” Hamilton shared with the crowd.

He also empahzised to the students the significance of persistence and humility in the early stages of his career, sharing his own experiences as an example. He stated, “I just kept pushing and I just kept dreaming. Cutting hair, singing in the barbershop. That lead me to meet a guy and that guy took me to New York, and that got my first record deal.”

During the spring ceremony on Friday (May 12), E-40, received an honorary doctorate degree in music from his alma mater, Grambling State University, in recognition of his contributions. Having received the honorary doctorate degree, E-40 can now be addressed as "Dr. E-40." He attended the graduation ceremony at the university to receive his degree and delivered inspiring remarks to the graduating students.

On Twitter the Bay Area mogul celebrated the achievement by sharing a carousel post. “Dr. Earl ‘E-40’ Stevens is officially in the building. Thank you, @Grambling1901, for giving me an honorary doctorate in music & molding me into the man and entrepreneur that I’ve become! I’m truly humbled,” he quoted.

The university's president, Rick Gallot, expressed his appreciation for the rapper's dedication to improving the Louisiana school before awarding E-40 the framed degree. “Mr. Stevens has always used his platform to highlight and advocate for Grambling State University, and for that, we are truly grateful,” said Gallot. In 1986, E-40 pursued commercial art at the historically Black college. He has previously expressed that attending college was the best decision he made as a young man. During his acceptance speech, he restated a similar sentiment.

“My time on campus was the best experience of my life. I always tell people that Grambling really helped mold me into the man and entrepreneur that stands before you,” he addressed the crowd of hundreds of students and their supporters. “I am proud to set an example for the next generation of leaders. I encourage everyone here today to use their experience at Grambling State University to pursue their passions and dreams.”

E-40 is not only a rapper, but he is also a thriving entrepreneur. He has made his mark in the wine and spirits industry, launched a food brand, and co-owns a restaurant in Oakland. In addition, he made a generous donation of $100,000 to Grambling's music department in February, which will support the Tiger Marching Band, benefit students, and maintain the newly-named recording studio in his honor.
