Blackstreet received a special honor in their hometown of Paterson, New Jersey, as they were recognized for their remarkable contributions to the music industry with the unveiling of Blackstreet Blvd on Friday July 28th at Presidential Blvd between West Broadway and Temple Street.
The iconic R&B group was formed in 1991 by record producers Chauncey "Black" Hannibal and Teddy "Street" Riley. Their breakthrough hit, "No Diggity" featuring Dr. Dre and Queen Pen, topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1996, selling 1.6 million copies that year. This track was the lead single from their second studio album, ‘Another Level.’ In 1998, Blackstreet won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Under Interscope Records, they released four albums until 2003. The current lineup consists of Hannibal, Levi Little, Mark Middleton, and Eric Williams.
On Saturday July 29th, the Grammy Award-winning group posted photos on social media, proudly posing with the street sign named after them. It's official!!! Blackstreet is literally on the map📍Words can not express the amount of joy we have at this moment,” the group captioned their social media post. “Words cannot express the amount of joy we have at this moment. Having a street dedicated to us in our honor from the city we grew up in is beyond anything we would have imagined when we were kids.”
“I believe in recognizing our local talent and giving them their flowers while they can smell them,” Councilwoman-at-Large Dr. Lilisa Mimms told local news reporters at the event. “Honoring our artists’ achievements and contributions is essential for preserving our city’s cultural heritage and inspiring future generations.”
During the event, attendees expressed immense love and gratitude, showcasing the profound impact the group had on their lives, as they enthusiastically celebrated the musicians' contributions and sought to preserve their legacy for generations to come.
