Alexis Talks Journey From 'Spunk Magazine' to 'Art for the Internet'

By: Irissah King

Fee Johnson and I sat down to recount her journey from Philadelphia to Los Angeles and now Atlanta. Her acting career began in Philadelphia, where she starred in a web series. Feeling the weight of stagnation and legal trouble in her hometown, she made the decision to relocate to Los Angeles in 2021, seeking a fresh start and greater opportunities.During her time in LA, she seized the chance to work behind the scenes with some of today's most prominent artists, including Beyoncé as an assistant director production assistant.

After realizing she was losing herself in the city's allure, Johnson made the move to Atlanta seven months ago to reignite her pursuit of acting. She notes the abundance of opportunities available for black individuals in Atlanta, a factor that influenced her decision. Despite the advantages Atlanta offers, Johnson voices her concern regarding the comparatively lower pay for actors and creatives.

During our conversation, we delved into the challenges of being confined to specific roles as a masculine presenting woman. Johnson expressed feeling pigeonholed into portraying characters stereotypically associated with toughness, such as gangsters or queen pins. She aspires to break free from these limitations and be considered for more multifaceted roles, such as those of a doctor or lawyer. Fee Johnson also shared her sources of inspiration within the industry, citing figures like Issa Rae and Lena Waithe.

God gave me this time and I’m going to do everything I want with it.
— Fee Johnson

Currently, she is working on a production team alongside Bobby “RZA” Diggs for an upcoming film. In addition, she is developing her own feature film titled "All of the Signs," a psychological thriller centered around a woman navigating newfound fame and the underlying trauma.

Additionally, we explored her entrepreneurial venture, "Touched by Angels LLC," a cleaning service established in 2018. This endeavor stemmed from her personal experience of discrimination while working for a cleaning service in Philadelphia. This experience brought motivation to carve out a legacy and generate opportunities for herself and others.
