Recipe for Change: Heartfelt Conversations on LGBTQIA+ Community and Acceptance
"Recipe for Change" series lights up the screen with a heartfelt episode that amplifies LGBTQIA+ voices, blending soulful meals with deeper conversations about identity and acceptance. We discuss it here!
B. Scott, Mal Wright, & Hayley Kiyoko Speak on LGBTQIA+ Community and Acceptance
By: Eboné Chatman
In the heart of the entertainment industry, where stories of resilience and triumph often emerge, a new episode of the YouTube series Recipe for Change from Spring Hill shines a spotlight on the voices of the LGBTQIA+ community. This particular installment features a diverse group of queer personalities, including B. Scott, Mal Wright, Hayley Kiyoko, Chrishell Stause, and Jesse Sullivan, as they engage in heartfelt discussions about community, safe spaces, and the profound journey of self-acceptance.
A Feast for Thought
Recipe for Change is known for its unique format, blending sumptuous meals with meaningful conversations. Each episode begins with a round table where participants enjoy exquisite dishes and delve into various topics relevant to the entertainment industry and beyond.
In this episode, renowned chef Susan Feniger, celebrated for her work on the Food Network's *Too Hot Tamales* and her influential Los Angeles restaurants SOCALO and Border Grill, takes the culinary helm.
The dinner starts with a vibrant vegetable ceviche, a dish as colorful as the guests' personalities! For the main course, Feniger serves a delectable Crispy Legged Thigh Chicken paired with crispy cauliflower, salsa verde, and pickled tomatoes. The meal concludes with an indulgent double chocolate espresso cake, providing a sweet backdrop to the evening's profound discussions.
Conversations that Matter
As dinner begins, a unique tradition unfolds. Each guest draws a question from a bowl, sparking conversations that are both personal and universal. The first question posed is, "What kind of reactions did you receive when coming out to people?"
Dine with Hayley Kiyoko, B. Scott & more | Recipe For Change: Honoring Queer Voices
Jesse Sullivan started the conversation by saying, “I came out twice. I came out as lesbian first,… but coming out as trans four years ago was a completely different story. Obviously this was a time where America was very Trump forward i’ll call it …and the reaction I had from people was just so different than coming out as gay. I lost a lot of family members, I lost a lot of people from the LGBTQ community, my lesbian friends at the time…It was so shocking to me because I didn't expect that”.
Hayley Kiyoko says, “you’re consistently coming out because, from my experience and from what I know, you’re coming out to yourself over and over and over again and you are trying to convince yourself that you love yourself and you love who you are. And on top of that you are coming out to others.”
She also states that she is hopeful that the “younger generations are able to create space for them to be themselves and at an earlier age.”
Scott shares struggles with identity as there were a few iterations from androgynous then gender non-conforming, “which was before there was all of the inclusion you see today. Now the trans non-binary fits the best”.
Scott continues the conversation and adds that, “It's so important that people understand the complexities of it all. Gender identity is one component of it and how you express is another. There are so many variations of how you can express and I'm happy that I made it to the point now where there is more inclusion so I can hold space and feel like I don’t really belong.”
Mal Wright shares her experience with being the “only / other” in the room and wonders if the reason why she gets invited to speak in rooms that she wasn’t in before is because she is “digestible” as she has friends that look like her that aren’t invited into the same spaces, and why not?
A Call to Acceptance
As the episode draws to a close, the message is clear: true acceptance begins with listening and understanding. The guests' stories resonate deeply, reminding viewers of the importance of supporting one another and celebrating our unique identities.
Recipe for Change continues to set a high standard for meaningful content in the digital age. This episode, in particular, serves as a poignant reminder of the power of community and the ongoing journey toward self-acceptance. Through the lens of food and conversation, it invites us all to reflect on our own paths and the ways we can contribute to a more inclusive and accepting world.
In a society where divisions often seem insurmountable, Recipe for Change offers a recipe for unity, one conversation at a time.

‘Inside Out 2’ Review | Envy, Anxiety, and Embarrassment Introduced as Riley Faces the Turbulence of Puberty
"Inside Out 2" returns with new emotions like Envy, Embarrassment, and Anxiety, as Riley confronts puberty's challenges in a whirlwind of emotional upheaval. We discuss it here!
By: Eboné Chatman
Inside Out is back, and not only are all of Riley’s original emotions returning, but we also have three new ones joining the crew: Envy, Embarrassment, and the troublemaker herself, Anxiety, as Riley navigates puberty.
The movie explores what a typical teenager might experience as they approach adulthood. Riley (Kensington Tallman) is now 13 years old, and headquarters is working overtime to manage all her emotions.
The big red siren sounds off, indicating the start of puberty, and headquarters is immediately under construction as renovation workers tear down walls and install a new console to accommodate Riley’s adolescent feelings. Her original emotions—Anger (Lewis Black), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Tony Hale), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and Joy (Amy Poehler)—become “suppressed emotions” and get pushed to the back of the mind along with her original “Sense of Self” as Riley’s new emotions push them out of headquarters and take over. The original emotions work hard throughout the movie to get back to headquarters to help Riley keep her “Sense of Self” intact, as this affects how she thinks about herself and treats others.
The film’s director, Pixar animation veteran Kelsey Mann (making his feature filmmaking debut), and the screenwriters, Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein, build on the earlier film’s whimsical, imaginative idea of how thoughts, memories, and emotional expression are stored and displayed in the mind. This second movie puts us right back on the emotional roller coaster.
The new crew of feelings are full of wit and bring an element of relatability to the new emotions that we all dealt with as teenagers and still contend with as adults: self-doubt, questionable decision-making, balancing feelings, and the drive to do your best, no matter what—but what is too far?
Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), Ennui (“boredom,” voiced by Adèle Exarchopoulos), and of course the star of the movie, Anxiety (Maya Hawke), have a lot of work to do to get Riley to the next step in life, as this is her last summer before high school. Riley just led her middle-school hockey team to the championships and is about to spend three days at hockey camp. But she’s thrown for a loop when she learns that her two best friends, Bree (Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green) and Grace (Grace Lu), won’t be attending the same high school as her. Riley struggles with wanting to make her future high school hockey team, the Fire Hawks, as the team’s coach runs the camp. This was her time to shine and show the coach she was worthy of making the team. However, this is just the beginning of the hard decisions the young teen will have to make throughout the movie.
At hockey camp, Riley thinks she needs to impress Valentina and the team’s other “cool kids,” no matter the cost. She mistakenly believes her two best friends are abandoning her, as they are both attending the same high school without Riley. This idea becomes the first defining moment of grown-up decision-making, as she begins to have tunnel vision about making the team and leaving her friends behind. Anxiety is the one driving the switchboard on this one!
Inside Out 2 | Official Trailer
As we all know, anxiety can take over at times, and mixing that with a little bit of fear can give us a false sense of self. This is exactly what Riley experiences as Anxiety takes over and pushes Riley to ignore her friends to hang out with the “cool kids,” choose friends over family, sneak into the coach's office, and ultimately crash her sense of self. This is WAR, as all the emotions are fighting to see who is better suited to take control of the switchboard of emotions. In the end, it’s realized that a balance of all the emotions is needed to create the complex people we all grow into.
“Inside Out 2” explores the desire to fit in and to be validated by Cool Culture, which seems to be our collective seal of approval for success. The movie captures early adolescence perfectly, as the growth between middle school and high school is drastic, with emotions, feelings, and thoughts changing at a rapid pace.
This is a winner in my book for Pixar, finding the sweet spot that merges the gaze of children and adults. The movie is really about all the small choices we make that shape our personalities and solidify our sense of self. We are left with a great cliffhanger, and I’m excited to see how they continue this storyline of young adulthood.

Michael B. Jordan Takes Director's Chair for 'Creed IV'
Irwin Winkler, producer of Creed, has confirmed the development of Creed IV, marking the return of franchise star Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as lead actor and director. We discuss it here!

Franchise producer Irwin Winkler announced the expansion of the Creed series with a fourth installment, revealing Michael B. Jordan's directorial role following his lead performance as Adonis Creed in Creed III. The third installment achieved a successful theater release in March, setting records with a $58 million opening weekend. Although MGM hasn't confirmed the news, Deadline was the first to report it.
Michael B. Jordan's role in the franchise commenced in 2015 with Creed, continuing through its sequels in 2018 and 2023. Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa featured in the initial two films as well.
Earlier this year, Variety also covered discussions between Jordan and Amazon, exploring the potential expansion of the Creed universe through supplementary film and TV projects.
Deadline also shared a video clip of Winkler discussing the project.

— Deadline Hollywood (@DEADLINE) November 18, 2023
“We’re planning to do Creed IV right now — it’s in the works — and we think we have a really good story, a really good plot. We got a little delayed because of the strikes, but about a year from now, we’re going into pre-production.”
“Michael and the creative team had the beautiful vision from the start to create a wholly new and different experience for this movie,” he stated. “It had to be firmly cemented in what we all [know] the Creed and Rocky movies for… it had to have great action, boxing, but we also really examined what kind of movie we were making. And a lot of that, those early days with Michael, were spent crafting how we were looking at the Damian character, which is why I think everyone responded to the depth, not only on the page but also on the screen. You spend half the movie having deep sympathy for him and understanding his vulnerability.”
Will Creed IV follow a time jump for Adonis' daughter or introduce a new opponent? As 2024 and 2025 approach and Creed IV moves closer to pre-production, more details will likely emerge.

Remembering the Iconic 'Malcolm X' Movie 31 Years Later
Spike Lee’s iconic film, Malcolm X, starring Denzel Washington, gave us one of the best in depth looks into the life of the slain civil rights leader. 31 years later, this film still stands as one of the greatest biopics ever. We discuss it here!
Malcolm X Movie Starring Denzel Washington
On November 18, 1992 Spike Lee’s classic movie, Malcolm X, starring Denzel Washington released in theaters. Spike Lee, who at the time was doing movies for Universal, was very impressed with Norman Jewison's take on the late activist Malcolm X. However, Lee felt like Norman may have missed some nuances of Malcolm’s journey. Spike Lee was very passionate about this story and he knew he was the right guy to show the true side of who Malcolm X really was. Fast forward thirty-one years later and his film portrayal of Malcolm X is one of the great American films not only of the decade but the century. It not only showed the true nature of Lee’s genius but it was his most self-effacing work to date in its humility before its subject.
Angela Bassett and Denzel Washington in Malcolm X
Some of the film’s fire and fury undoubtedly came from the circumstances under which it was made. Lee had a very weird relationship with the powers that be at Warner Bros. (Like most these days) than he had enjoyed at Universal, and there were numerous fights over the length of the movie that culminated in a period when the bond company shut down the film and took it out of Lee’s hands. That didn’t stop Lee, the director stuck to his guns, however channeling the same fiery determination that came to define his subject. An iconic scene was when Malcolm X, played by (Denzel Washington) was looking out the window with the Ak-47 gun, definitely an all-time photo in cinema history. With a star studded cast, Spike Lee had all the tools for a great film, and he did not disappoint.
I rate the Malcolm X movie 10/10. A great history lesson in Black Culture. A classic Spike Lee Joint.

Kevin Hart Named 25th Recipient of the Mark Twain Prize For American Humor

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts revealed on Wednesday (Nov. 15) that Kevin Hart is set to receive the 25th Mark Twain Prize For American Humor. Respected comedians such as Richard Pryor, Whoopi Goldberg, Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, and Dave Chappelle have previously been honored with this prestigious award.
Hart, 44, started his career during his teenage years by showcasing his talent at places like The Laff House in Philadelphia, adopting the moniker Lil Kev. Reflecting on those early stand-up gigs, he described a series of tough setbacks, including facing repeated booing from the audience and even, as he recounted, having food thrown at him, like a piece of chicken, during a performance.
“I’ve been doing comedy since the inception of this award 25 years ago. To be honored in this commemorative year feels surreal. Comedy is my outlet for social commentary and observations on life — I am grateful to the Kennedy Center for recognizing my voice and impact on culture. I can’t wait to celebrate!”
Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter also conveyed her thoughts on Hart's upcoming recognition. “For over three decades, Kevin Hart has been a source of laughter across America and throughout the world with his iconic characters, inimitable physical comedy and relatable narratives,” she stated. “An accomplished writer, producer, actor and comedian, he has made lasting contributions to the comedic landscape and represents our celebration of American humor at the Kennedy Center.”
As disclosed by the Kennedy Center, 11 of Hart’s movies premiered as the top-grossing films at the box office. The Hartbeat Productions head has also accumulated over $4.23 billion in global earnings. In July, he made a comeback to stand-up with his eighth special, Reality Check, exclusively streamed on Peacock. Scheduled for 2024, Hart is set to star in two movies, Lift and Borderlands.
Beyond his entertainment ventures, Hart extended his influence into the food industry through his plant-based restaurant chain, Hart House. By the way, Hart House is pretty good—keep striving for excellence, Kev.
Hart is scheduled to accept his award at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on March 24, with the ceremony's broadcast date yet to be announced.

'Almost Christmas': A Laughter-Filled Celebration of Family and Holiday Miracles Turns 7
David E. Talbert's Almost Christmas celebrates its 7-year anniversary, blending laughter and holiday miracles with a star-studded cast led by Danny Glover and Monique. Explore the film's heartwarming tale of family, love, and festive joy. We discuss it here!
By: Rhanni Lew
David E. Talbert's take on an African-American Christmas Dramedy, Almost Christmas, celebrates its 7-year anniversary today. With a talented and comedic star-studded cast, it was hard not to laugh throughout this movie. Starring Danny Glover (Walter) as the family patriarch, still grieving the loss of his wife, he is determined to have the perfect holiday season as he sets out to bake the perfect sweet potato pie, as his wife did every year prior. Monique plays the hilarious and outspoken aunt (Aunt May), who comes to help the family of her late sister. Although she can be a bit eccentric, her career as a background singer to all the pop and soul artists you can think of has given her out-of-this-world experiences. She is the aunty who does not play and will unapologetically put you in your place.
Danny Glover, Nicole Parker, and Romany Malco in ‘Almost Christmas’
With all four of his kids, his two in-laws, and a few grandchildren, Walter is set to spend this first Christmas without his wife, who passed 10 months prior, with his family, and he knows if they can get along for 5 days, it will truly be a Christmas Miracle.
With many storylines, the Meyers kids bring home their own issues for the holidays. Successful dentist Kimberly Elise (Cheryl) is stuck in a rut with her goofy husband and his wandering eye, J.B. Smoove (Lonnie). Recently divorced Gabrielle Union (Rachel) is still trying to figure things out as a struggling single mom in law school, parenting a tween daughter who just might have it more together than she does. Romany Malco (Christian), a senator running for Congress, obviously has a hard time balancing and setting boundaries between family and work. Meanwhile, the youngest, Jessie Usher (Evan), is a college football star with a bright future recovering from a shoulder injury. Lastly, the handful of child actors shine as young millennials attached to their iPhones and enthralled in 'grown folks' business; their cameras do not miss a moment.
Although this film is filled with great actors and has a sense of relatability, JB Smoove and Monique's comedic chops are endless in this film. There is never a dull moment with these two, as you never know what they are going to say next. The cast is what brings this movie to life as they navigate through feelings of heartache, anger, and love. Although it may have a pretty predictable storyline, it does what it was meant to do: make the viewer feel good and love and appreciate their families with a hearty laugh.

18 Years of The Boondocks: A Nostalgic Anniversary Celebration
Today marks the anniversary of when Aaron McGruder blessed our screens with the first episode of The Boondocks, titled Garden Party. We discuss it here!
Today marks the anniversary of when Aaron McGruder blessed our screens with the first episode of The Boondocks, titled Garden Party. When Aaron McGruder created The Boondocks, he had his pulse on Black culture. His courage and imagination were like the ventricle muscles of insight, brilliance, and analytics that comprised and circulated Black cultural themes, aesthetics, and critique. Much like Seth MacFarlane does with Family Guy, or what Trey Parker and Matt Stone continue to do with South Park, no scenario or person is off-limits regarding content for the show. The Boondocks is known for its engagement with cultural, social, and political issues that remain relevant today.
The Boondocks revolves around two brothers, Huey and Riley Freeman (both voiced by Regina King), who move to live with their Granddad, Robert Jebediah Freeman, in a predominantly white suburb called Woodcrest. Huey is a young social activist with a strong sense of morality and conviction, passionate about social justice and civil rights issues. His persona serves as a vehicle for the social and political humor in the show, and he frequently offers political and social criticism. As a fan of hip-hop culture, Riley often emulates aspects of gangsta culture and is a source of humor and mockery in the series. He's known for his exaggerated swagger, love of violence, and preference for adopting the street lifestyle, even if it's misguided.
In the first episode, The Garden Party, the family attends a pompous, upper-class garden party. Granddad's constant worry that Huey and Riley will make him look foolish in front of their new neighbors spirals out of control. Having grown up socially aware and politically involved, Huey is skeptical about both the Garden Party and the flimsy bonds they have made with their new neighbors. He can see past the superficial advantages and believes that the white residents have hidden biases. On the other hand, Riley is desperate to fit in and will do anything to achieve it, even trying to dress up as a hip-hop celebrity and making friends with kids in the neighborhood.
The episode takes us on a wild ride that introduces the cast and their personalities perfectly. During the same garden party, Riley's brother Huey delivers these memorable lines:
“Excuse me. Everyone, I have a brief announcement to make. Jesus was black, Ronald Reagan was the devil, and the government was lying about 9/11. Thank you for your time, and good night.”
After seeing that episode, I knew that this show would not be on the air for long, but it was hilarious and successfully built its audience over the course of four seasons. Don't you wish "The Boondocks" was still airing to tackle conflicts like social media, dating, and everything else? Every single episode of "The Boondocks" was like a comic strip for debates and opinions about power, representation, identity, economic exploitation, patriotism, misogyny, homophobia in hip-hop, nostalgia, the so-called war, and more. Happy anniversary to a show that will forever be cemented as a fan favorite in Black history and Black culture.

Dwayne Johnson Makes 7-figure Donation to SAG-AFTRA Relief Fund

In a surprising move, A-List Hollywood actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson contributed a “landmark” seven-figure donation to SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Emergency Financial Assistance Fund set up for struggling actors amidst their ongoing strike against major Hollywood studios which began on July 13th. Leaders of the foundation President Courtney B. Vance and Executive Director Cyd Wilson sent a letter to 2,700 of the union’s highest-earning actors explaining the financial strains the strike would cause.
This is the first industry shutdown in 60 years, but it will take a while for viewers to notice a change in what is airing on television and streaming platforms since most of the content that is getting ready to be released was shot a year ago. Right now late night shows are showing re-runs due to the writers strike.
“It was a love fest. It’s like, ‘Man, you’re stepping up in a way that is allowing others to know the dire necessity of it,' “This is him saying, ‘In such a time as this, I’m here and I’m not going anywhere, whatever you need me to do.’ And that sends a huge message to other folks to do the same thing.” - Courtney B. Vance
Shortly after the announcement that thousands of film and television stars were going on strike, “The Rock” decided to step up for his fellow Screen Actors Guild members. In a statement Vance expressed how thankful he was and how the donation will help those in need of assistance during such a difficult time.
"Everyone knows what happens when you go on strike, when you stand for something — as the saying goes, if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for everything," he added. "You can’t stand unless you have support underneath you, on the side, up top and up front. So Dwayne is letting everyone know, ‘I’m here. What are you going to do?” - SAG President Courtney B. Vance
For the first since 1960, both Hollywood actors and writers are on strike simultaneously. Members of SAG-AFTRA are seeking pay and residual increases, higher caps on pension and health contributions and regulating the use of artificial intelligence. The Screen Actors Guild has more than 160,000 members, although the strike only affects the union’s roughly 65,000 actors.

Dame Dash Discusses Why $1 Million Isn't Enough To Maintain Millionaire Status
Entrepreneur Dame Dash shared valuable insights on the strategies necessary to maintain millionaire status during an interview for the Get Humbled interview series hosted by hair stylist Shanita Robinson. We discuss it here!
Dame Dash
By: Omar Cook
During an interview for the Get Humbled interview series hosted by hair stylist Shanita Robinson, Dame Dash, co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, shared valuable insights on the strategies necessary to maintain millionaire status. According to Dash, staying a millionaire is a greater challenge than initially achieving such wealth. The conversation took place on Sunday, July 16, where Dash generously provided valuable financial advice and tips.
Dame started off by saying “So now the question is how much bread do you want to make? And I don’t think it’s a bad thing to want to make a lot of money because there are people you might need to take care of.”
Robinson stated her goal was hit the million dollar mark and Dame interjected to let her know that a million isn’t enough to be a true millionaire. In today’s economy, Dame is right…a million definitely isn’t enough.
“We’re dreaming,” he said. “Let me tell you what a million dollars does. If you go in the store and buy a 25-cent bag of potato chips, you’re not a millionaire. You spend one dollar and you’re not a millionaire.
“You want to stay a millionaire, so you want a couple. Because the minute you start to get into millions, so do your bills. The carrying cost of things is what kills you.”

Angela Bassett is set to receive one of the highest honors an actor can receive. According to Variety, this fall at the 14th annual Governors Awards, Bassett will be presented with an honorary Oscar. Much deserved for this iconic actress who has portrayed multiple Oscar worthy roles. The awards will take place in Los Angeles on November 18, 2023.
Bassett has been nominated for Oscar twice but went home empty handed back in March at the Oscars. She was nominated for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which many people believed she should have won, but now she will have a trophy to call her own. She will be in great company as actor Mel Brooks and film editor Carol Littleton will also receive honorary Oscars. Michelle Satter, the esteemed founding senior director of the Sundance Institute's Artist Programs, will be presented with the prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award during the upcoming untelevised event.
“The Academy’s Board of Governors is thrilled to honor four trailblazers who have transformed the film industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and movie fans,” Academy President Janet Yang stated.
Angela Bassett’s resume is stamped, to say the least. Her breakout role came in 1990 playing Trey’s mother in Boyz n the Hood. She also played Betty Shabazz, alongside Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s, Malcolm X film. Her role as Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It, should have arguably been her first Oscar for Best Actress but her time has finally come nonetheless. Congratulation to Angela Bassett on this prestigious accomplishment as this will only solidify her place even more as one of the greatest actresses in history.

“Writers are, in many instances, the glue to the execution of artistry and storytelling. Our ability to extract emotion from performers helping them to articulate their voices and vision to the world is irreplaceable. The protection of the writer is crucial. We simply must protect our intellectual property.”

Today on May 22, Idris Elba and his wife, Sabrina Elba, announce a partnership with BBC and CBC to produce "Paid in Full: The Battle for Payback." This compelling three-part docuseries aims to delve into the exploitative practices that have plagued Black artists within the music industry, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
“This is a story that touches all of us. It’s about the people who created the soundtracks of our lives in popular music and the pain of their exploitation. It’s also about bringing the music industry to account for the injustice inflicted on generations of musical talents who have been deprived of their rightful rewards both financially and in terms of status and respect. At the heart of it is the need to make amends — granting acknowledgment and paying back what is due.” Idris said in a statement.
The series will be produced by his production company, Green Door, in collaboration with Zinc Media's production label, Supercollider, and Canadian independent producer, Catalyst.
Green Door, the production company led by Idris Elba, has an impressive track record in scripted TV credits. They have worked on notable projects such as "Hijack" for Apple TV+, the Sky One comedy series "In the Long Run" created by and featuring Elba, and the Netflix comedy "Turn Up Charlie," a co-production with Brown Eyed Boy that was co-created by Elba and also stars him in a leading role.
Tanya Shaw, who serves as the managing director of Zinc Television, spoke more on what Idris is looking to accomplish.
“Far from being a straight music documentary, this series will explore the music industry within a racial context and reflect the history of exploitation within the industry. It will also major in on conversations of structural racism and those who have worked so hard to expose them,” she stated.
Jennifer Dettman, who serves as executive director of unscripted content at CBC, also shared her thoughts on how the series can impact the audience in Canada.
“We look forward to sharing this important series with audiences in Canada, offering a necessary and in-depth exploration of the structural racism inherent in the music industry and its impact over the decades,” she said.
There has been no official date for the production or release just yet but this is a an exciting production for artists around the world as Idris is shining a light on the negative aspects of the industry that has plagued many artists previously.

Keke Palmer Talks Sacrifices and Growth With the Release of Her Latest Album 'Big Boss'
Keke Palmer discusses the sacrifices she has had to make in the entertainment industry to achieve her success and the growth that has come with overcoming obstacles in her career, with the release of her latest studio album Big Boss! We discuss it here!
Keke Palmer drops her latest studio album, Big Boss
By: Omar Cook
Keke Palmer has always been a symbol of Black excellence in the entertainment industry and she is showing no signs of slowing up! On Friday (May 12), Palmer celebrated the launch of her latest album, Big Boss, along with a 40 minute visual album of the same title to go alongside it. A big win for her fans.
It’s been over a decade since Palmer dropped her last studio album, So Uncool, and Keke pulled out all of her creativity for this project. Palmer wrote, directed, and executive produced the film project and the album was executive produced by Tricky Stewart, a Chicago collab. In this day and age, artists need to wear multiple hats to stay on top and Palmer seems to make it look easy!
Keke Palmer recently spoke with Teen Vogue , sharing the importance of her new project and how it displays her journey of growing up in the entertainment industry. The multi-talented 29-year-old has been acting and singing since she was young and has achieved numerous career milestones and accolades. While she attributes her strong work ethic to her success, Palmer acknowledges that she had to make certain sacrifices to get to where she’s at.
“I've sacrificed a lot. I sacrificed my childhood. I sacrificed moments in my siblings' lives, like holidays, theirs plays, their games, just moments in their life. I sacrificed my peace of mind. It is a very anxious career. Most of all, a lot of time — time is the one thing that you can't get back. Time is invaluable. But then at the same time, I could retire or I could take at least years and years and years off and I'm not even 30 yet. You take the good with the bad.”
It’s pretty clear the message Palmer was looking to send with this project, and it’s the message that she is in full control of her career, from an entrepreneurial standpoint.
“When it comes to this being a full-throttle album situation again, it's again the big boss energy. I'm here, I'm ready, I'm taking it. I'm really comfortable with my story, and I'm comfortable enough to share it and own it… I'm only here because of what I went through. It took what I went through with music in order for me to get to this place as an artist.”
In her film, Big Boss, Palmer confronts some of the challenges she has faced within the entertainment industry, from Hollywood to the music world and beyond. The film offers a candid glimpse into Palmer's life like never before. It exposes her genuine perspectives on the male-dominated realms of recording studios and movie sets, while also revealing her vulnerabilities as one of the most brilliant talents of her generation. Palmer doesn’t shy away from discussing her highs and lows and how she overcame each obstacle with perserverance.
“The album I did first, then a few months or so after I started writing the film. We filmed [Big Boss] just a couple of months before Nope. So it was still a crazy schedule, because I was doing that and then I was getting ready for Nope right after. It was definitely hectic, oh my gosh. But every day I felt like I was in a euphoric state, which is insane. I was on this adrenaline high. Even though it was a lot going on, it was a very good experience. I felt like a kid in a candy store. It was really fun. It felt good.” Palmer stated to Teen Vogue.
Keke has had a lot to celebrate this year after welcoming her a newborn son back in February 2023 with her boyfriend Darius Jackson, and the release of her new project is another win for the superstar. Big Boss dropped on KeyTV, which is Palmer’s personal network and can now be streamed everywhere. Check it out below!
