Natural Tips For Healthy Happy Hair This Spring and Summer
It’s spring and natural curls have been on full display! Here are just a few tips and reminders to showing off your healthy natural hair!
By: Emily-Ann
It’s spring and that means for some, natural curls will be on full display. Here are just a few reminders for those coming out of protective styling. Catching that well-deserved break DC (deep conditioning) is essential. Don’t forget the scissors for that trim. While taking down my hair from my most recent protective styling, and I realized that my mane needed CPR and a DC and yes a trim. Currently, I’m using Shea Moisture Raw Shea line deep masque. My hair loves the detangler and the DC treatment seems to be working really well.
Another reminder, wash and detangle in sections as this makes wash day bearable. I know wash days can be a pain and very time-consuming. You may want to look for products that do dual action. Dual products that speed up the time spent on your hair. Especially, the naturals with a busy schedule and on mommy duty with young ones.
For my students in college, try setting aside a day or getting up early on the weekend to do your hair. I usually choose Saturdays when my energy is there, and Sundays can be set aside for other chores or activities. Use the many tools that are available to you, and what best works for your hair.
I know many are trying the crimp rods. Please let the trend pass by, especially if you are new to the natural game. Focus more on getting to know your beautiful hair ladies and less on the next trend. I see many of the IG and YouTube influencers trying all kinds of different hair tools. Take into consideration they may have been dealing with their hair a little longer than you. I say let the trend be a trend, the last thing you want to do is accumulate unnecessary tools. If you later want to try the look you can always revisit the hairstyle at a later date. I always stress the importance of getting to know your hair likes and dislikes.
Most importantly treat your hair with love and patience. I love to remind myself of the analogy of a plant. If you water it, it will grow and when nurtured it will flourish. Feed your hair the best of the best and watch the glow up!
I know many of us will still rock our lace front, bundles, and closures but remember to let your hair just be. Give your mane a rest from all that tugging and pulling every once and a while. Put the baby hairs on pause and let them be free. That’s all of my friendly reminders for loving on your natural hair.
Let us know how you plan to walk into this spring and summer this year!

Black Hair is Black History: Origin of Cornrows
Black hair is a major part of black history! We discuss the cultural impact and origin of cornrows!
By: Emily-Ann
Happy Black History Month naturals!
As you know the black community is never afraid to express ourselves and you can see it throughout our culture. No matter where we are in the world, we manage to display our black melanin magic. You can see it through our movies as the fashion and hair evolved throughout the decades. Celebrities like Halle Berry, Janet Jackson, M.C Hammer, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy just to name few. I can go on with the movie list, but you can watch any movies from 80-90”s with many black celebrities and see our influence. The oversized hats to the bodycon dress and the braids, top fades, and big hooped earrings (which I personally love) still, play a role in our self-expression as a culture. I am going to be highlighting on the hair from men and women and give you a little bit of history on black hairstyles and where they’ve started from.
Let's Talk Cornrows
Cornrow Braids, which are the proper term, not box braids originated in Africa. These beautiful detail braids have been in recorded history as early as 3000 B.C. You can see women wearing these braids to help identify what tribe they belonged to. The braids for men were a way to separate the warriors and kings in places like Ethiopia. Men like Tewodros II, who ruled Ethiopia from 1855-1868 and Yohannes IV, who ruled Ethiopia from 1872-1892 wore braids. Yohannes IV held the nickname of “King of Kings of Ethiopia” and “King of Zion”. In West Africa, braids used to display social economic status, spiritual beliefs, or material status.
Cornrows, became popular within the black community in America during the 60s-70s when black power was at an all time peek. Although, we have since then seen this hairstyle throughout the years and in our childhood. We always seem to agree on one thing, it will never be just a trend or something to try. It’s apart of our culture and the roots run deep within.
>> SEE ALSO: Natural Hair Tips: How To Safely Blowout Your Natural Hair
Braids were also used to help slaves escape on their road to freedom and women would wear specific braids to depict if there were roads to use, or who they can trust for help in their great escape. Black slaves had many ways of communicating, and braids were apart of that communication. As freed black slaves and generations after, braids slowly started to be a thing of the past. Now more than ever we are rediscovering this tradition and expanding our knowledge on the subject. My favorite so far would be the African Fulani Braids.
They were also deemed to be ghetto or seen to be inappropriate to wear. Women of color began to ditch the braids and opted for relaxers and we can’t forget those Jerry Curls products. Fast forward to today, our community is once again having to stand up for our culture. Calling out the people who are either profiting off it or mimicking it. It deems the questions, “Why do we always have to fight to honor our culture?” and “ Why is it a constant battle?”

Natural Hair Tips: Top 5 Hair Gels For Natural Hair
What are the best hair gels to use for natural hair? We’re giving you a list of the top 5 hair gels all natural hair women need to know!
By: Emily-Ann
Welcome to 2019 naturals!
What are the best hair gels to use for natural hair? In no particular order, these gels will work for even the naturals with thick and curly hair. I never want to leave out my type 4 naturals, I got something on this list for you too!
1) Shine ‘n Jam Conditioning Gel Extra Hold
This formula states it’s a moisturizing, non-flaking, non-greasy hold, with honey extract to help strengthen hair. Now being that my hair is type 4 with low porosity, I can appreciate the honey ingredient. When looking at the list of ingredients water was the first one! This to me means everything, and I love the appearance, smell and the hold. It did not make my hair flaky at all. I have only tried it on my baby hairs, but if it can pass my baby hair test, it just may work for the rest of my hair. I love the way it smells as well, very light texture, and it doesn't feel heavy at all when you apply it to your edges/baby hairs. This gel is high hold, and can do no wrong to me! So far so good!
2) Edge Hicks Gel
I have absolutely loved this gel and I’d measure it as is a medium to high hold. Edge Hicks Gel, has a thicker appearance and the color is clear. Roughly price point is $14.00 CAD. It may be cheaper for my American counterparts! I used this gel a lot during my earlier days in my natural hair journey. The only complaint I have is that it did flake on my hair and leave a white residue that was not cute. I limited my use to only my edges after that. Smell is great, and has a high perfume smell.
3) Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera
If you are looking for a more natural way to lay and slay those edges, try using Aloe Vera gel, plus its gentle and great for your hair. This gel is a light hold and it’s best to use a headscarf to help lay down those baby hairs. It’s all natural and aloe vera gel is great for your hair and scalp. It can double as many other things. I use it to help heal scars, itchy scalp, and it has a cooling sensation which I love for those days where you need something that is multifunctional.
4) Gorilla Snot Gel
This gel is for my type 4 natural hair babies. This gel is extremely thick and somewhat sticky in texture. The gel appearance is yellow but the bottle i’m not really too fond of it. The name alone, kind of is a huge turn off for me. I have used this gel a few times. Believe it or not, I was told to try this gel out via Twitter by simply asking, “What gel should I use for type 4 hair?” I purchased this gel at my local beauty supply store. The price I believe is around $5.00 CAD. I found it to a little hard to work with due to the sticky texture, but if you don’t mind then this is the gel to use. I wish they would change the name of the products to be completely honest.
5) Aunt Jackie’s Flaxseed Tame My Edges
This gel caught my eye because it caters to different hair types. Aunt Jackie’s line and collection display a wide range of products. Based on your hair texture, the selection process is much easier and faster so I am here for it! This line is considered to be natural and has no sulfate, free of paraben, no mineral oil, and no petrolatum.
I am aware of eco styler gel which is not on this list. I know that it is still on many lists and a favorite among many. However, I left it out purposely and you can see why here.
If you want to add to our list, please comment below and share this post. Check back for more natural hair tips and tricks here at 247liveculture!

Christmas Gift Ideas For Natural Hair Girls
The holidays are upon on us again, which means it’s that time to start Christmas shopping! Don’t stress we have some great gift ideas for natural hair women on your list!
By: Emily-Ann
Do you have a natural hair beauty on your list for this year? The holidays are upon on us again, and you know what that means. It's time to open our wallets, purse, and credit cards and start that Christmas shopping. Don’t stress I have some great gift ideas for natural women on your list.
Natural Hair Care Basket
If you are a DIY kind of person you will love this idea. You can buy a basket, box or decorative box. Collect different items from your local beauty supply store and make a gift basket. You can fill the basket with items that every natural needs if it’s someone who recently joined the natural community-like a welcome package of some sort.
Stocking Stuffers
You can stuff them with products that they love and items you see them using all the time it just takes a little attention to detail. A quick look around their home and a few questions can give you some clues.
T-Shirts
More ideas are cool t-shirts and mugs with famous saying like “Black Girl Magic”, “Black Melanin”, “My black is beautiful” or other slogans. Remind her of how important self-love is.
Bathroom Accessories
I have seen really cute shower curtains with cartoon characters with afros, shower caps and other things that one may need to protect her mane. They are all over Esty and Instagram. There are so many cool items on Esty as great gift ideas, that I can just shop on there for hours. If I got paid for shopping that would be my next career position.
Wraps and Slick Scarfs
For that natural who loves wearing wraps and just slaying the game with her wrapping skills, give her the gift of some head bonnets/scarfs/wraps. They come in a variety of patterns and African prints. This is an old tradition that of course our mothers have handed down to us, and has been in our culture for decades. Caring about her edges will always win you points. You can find these items at your local beauty supply store, and other websites that cater to natural hair beauties.
Gift Card
For that natural beauty that has “everything”, my suggestion is simple. Gift card with their favorite beauty supply store or Amazon. It eliminates the guesswork and saves you some time. Plus, if your guy is clueless about what to get you, mention the gift card. You’ll get exactly what you want, and he can relax knowing it did a good job on this Christmas gift exchange. 6 Natural Hair Rules You Need to Know for the Winter
Have you been wondering what to do with your natural hair for the winter? Here are 6 tips for helping you maintain your natural hair during the winter!
By: Emily-Ann
Have you been wondering what to do with your natural hair for the winter? As you know winter is heading our way. For those of us who live in a four-season climate, we are already experiencing colder weather. I know I am actually not looking forward to the colder months. In saying that, I often think about what protective hairstyle to do. First things first, let's get some common practices that you should either implement into your routine.
Keeping your ends tucked away, remember the ends are the oldest part of your hair. Limit the exposure throughout the cooler months. There are many creative and lovely styles to choose from, for example, box- braids, the famous poetic justice braids, and many more! Doing a protective style, be mindful of how tight and for how long you are keeping that style in. Let your hair breathe between styling and keep your scalp well maintained and moisturized.
>> RELATED: Yes, Black Girls Do Have Long Natural Hair
Colder months mean we use heat tools and turn on the heat in our homes. This can be very drying to both our skin and hair. It may be a good idea to use an air defuser in your home to help. They are now making ones that are small enough to fit in your bedroom or living room. Some come with essential oils and give off great scents.
Another tip is double up on your deep conditioning products and steaming your hair. Amazon has some great ones on sale, or you find them at your local beauty supply store. I know I am not the only one who likes to double up on winter items. Get winter accessories with slick lining or have someone put a lining in your hats as it would decrease the chance of a snag or pull on your natural hair.
>> RELATED: Natural Hair Growth Tips: Why Won't My Hair Grow Past A Certain Length?
Just a recap of some of the points made in today’s post
Keep your ends protected by tucking the ends in.
Moisturize your ends and scalp
Deep condition and steam your hair, hooded stationery or portable dry, and plastic cap.
Slick lining hats and other winter accessories.
Keeping your hair up off your neck to avoid snagging of your ends from clothing like sweaters and scarfs.
Protective styles are great so remember to give your hair some breathing room by letting your own hair rest between styles.
Most importantly have fun with your hairstyles and keep in mind that your mane is your crown. What you put in your body is just as important as what you put on it. Comment and leave your suggestions for this winter below!

Natural Hair Tips: How To Safely Blowout Your Natural Hair
“Don’t let the shrinkage fool you!” Here are some tips to safely blowing out your natural hair!
By: Emily-Ann
Are you wondering how to safely blow out your natural hair? It’s a question that I’ve been asking myself lately. There are methods that can blow out even the tightest curl patterns. My hair is type 4 and thick, but you couldn’t really tell with the shrinkage. Let it be known there is a saying in the natural hair community, “Don’t let the shrinkage fool you.” I am telling you it is very much a real fact.
Recently, I visited a salon to blow out my hair and the stylist looked like she just finished a workout and was sweating by the end of my appointment. She had to switch between multiple attachments before finding the right one. While I was not entirely happy with my results, it got me thinking, maybe there is an easier way. I did a quick search and of course, I went to my favorite website, Youtube. One video, in particular, caught my attention. The title jumped out at me because of healthy hair. Having healthy hair motivates me to keep going on this natural journey.

How to: SAFELY Blow Dry THICK, KINKY NATURAL HAIR | Reduced Manipulation & Breakage!!!
This Youtuber explains that she uses two different methods to blow out her naturally kinky hair. I love watching this naturalista because we have the same hair type. I may have to adjust accordingly in order for my hair to achieve the same results.
This natural beauty mentions two methods using slight tension to help blow dry your hair. You will need your Denman brush for detangling, heat protector, wide tooth comb, and leave-in conditioner. I use a heat protector with Aragorn oil because my hair loves it!
Tension Method, achieved by pulling the hair straight, and blow drying the roots while applying slight tension. Remember to blow-dry in small sections, to all sections of the hair until fully blown out. You can use the denman brush for the ends to help with the getting your hair cuticle to lay flat.
It is also a good idea to do hair with a cold shot at the end to close your hair cuticles. It’s the same idea as washing your hair. You add heat to open the cuticles and cold to shut them and seal in the moisture or set a style. The same idea applies here.
The second method is using the blow dryer attachment heads. Apply the same method but swapping out the brush for the attachment. Don’t forget your leave-in and heat protector! Let us know how you achieve your blow out results. Leave a comment and share your blow out methods.

8 Natural Hair Tips You Need to Know: A Guide To Living With Natural Hair
Are you thinking about going natural and need some guidance? The beauty of it lies in self-discovery and identity. Here is the beginner's guide to living with natural hair!
By: Emily-Ann
Are you thinking about going natural? Are you looking for guidance? There are many reasons why many black women have chosen this path. The beauty of it lies in self-discovery and identity.

A new show on Netflix that follows a woman of color and her path of self-discovery called Nappily Ever After, premiered on September 23, 2018. The main character, which is played by actress Sanaa McCoy Lathan, begins by cutting and shaving off all her hair. She sports a short hairstyle and is a bit self-conscious about the new look, which many of us can relate to. Many of us start with a short hairstyle when we do the big chop. The character slowly builds back her confidence by accepting her new image. With the encouragement of good friends she then learns to live life freely. The character’s layers of identity begin to slowly unravel as she walks in her truth. For many women of color, including myself, our hair is a big part of our identity. Looking in the mirror, it’s the first thing that we see and touch.
This show captures one woman's story on starting her natural hair journey! Whether you are transitioning from relaxed to natural or decide to do the “Big Chop”, I believe this show displays a very real reality that speaks the truth about being a black woman. The emotions that come with being natural and realizing what kind of woman you want to be.

The beginner's guide to being natural isn’t a straight line, but you can find great tips and tricks from bloggers and Youtube including sites like this one. Now I know you are curious about how to get started so here are some guidelines. I am certain you don’t want to have your own screaming moment in the mirror like our character in Nappily Ever After.
Guide To Living With Natural Hair
It will take time getting used to your new look. Freaking out is normal, and your reservations about whether it was the right decision is also normal. I promise you, in the end, you will learn to love your beautiful naturally curly hair and texture.
Write out your hair goals, what is important to you. Create a hair Journal where you can express your thoughts on paper.
Start mapping out how and when you will do your big chop or transition. Mark it on your calendar and map your whole month.
You will encounter friends, family and even coworkers who will have their opinion on your new look. Not everyone will like it. Remember why you are doing this and ultimately it’s your hair on your head.
Confidence will come with growth. Especially, if you have always had long hair. I always like to remind myself, “Its hair, it will grow back it just takes time.”
Purchase the products that are appropriate for your stage in your journey. Read the labels and don’t just buy blindly. Each product tells you what it designs to do for your hair. Find the one that works for you.
Find a natural with the same hair type as yours. What works for them may work for you as well. Take notes and adjust as needed or until you get desired results.
Your hair will let you know what it needs. Believe me when I say it has a voice of its own. Don’t be afraid to switch products during new seasons, it's actually recommended.

Natural Hair Growth Tips
Spraying your hair with water is one of the most important practices! Add to your spray bottle to enhance hair growth benefits for example: Rose Water, Aloe Vera Juice, Peppermint essential oil, and Rosemary essential oil
Deep Condition for 30-45 minutes after your shampoo. Sitting under a hooded dryer or plastic cap will do just fine.
Pre Poo, although not necessary, but if it works for you then continue. It can help with SSK (Single strand knots) and the detangling process.
Hot oil treatments, should be done throughout the year. Especially during the winter when the environment changes frequently.
Trims - pay attention to your hair because it will let you know when it’s time for a trim. Do you get split ends when you do a two strand twist ? Or that curl doesn't quite curl and the end? It might be a good idea to get a trim. You can either have professional do the trim or you can do the trim yourself. It’s up to you and your comfort level.
Massaging the scalp - This can encourage blood circulation and promote healthy hair regrowth and natural hair growth.
Drinking a lot of water is very important and it should be the first thing that you put in your body and the last thing at night before bed.
Taking multivitamins, weather it be in pill form or liquid form. Consult your family physician before taking any multivitamin. It’s good idea to find the right method and discuss any changes with your healthcare provider.
Diet - just like the saying goes, “ Garbage in, garbage out.” Make sure you are balancing your habits out with some leafy greens and exercise.
Detangle your hair - Use the finger method or if you find that that just won’t do the trick, try using conditioner like Aussie Moist line which provides great slip and use a wide tooth comb to help with the detangling method. Never detangle or manipulate on dry hair. This will cause breakage and split ends!!!!!
Hair growth oils - Add oils that aid in hair growth like Olive Oil, Jamaican Black Caster Oil, Jojoba Oil, Peppermint Oil, Rosemary Oil
Cleansing Shampoo - Please do your scalp a favor and make it happy! A happy scalp will give you healthy hair growth and retention. Find a light moisturizing shampoo that will not strip all of the oils from your hair. I am currently using Texture ID cleansing shampoo.
Good protective practices for bedtime - Tying up your hair or wrapping it in a slick scarf or bonnet, and or pillow case.
Hope this helps those of you who are looking for guidance. If we missed anything or you would like to add to this list, comment below and let us know! Don’t forget to check out all our other posts on hair care!

Cute Natural Hairstyle Ideas for Short Hair

By: Emily-Ann
Embrace Your Natural Short Hair
Having long natural hair is beautiful, but short natural hairstyles are just as gorgeous. Love your curls at any stage! If you are like me and you have always had long hair, going natural or doing the big chop can be daunting and scary. You’ve never seen your hair, never mind having short natural hair. The texture is different, and you have mixed emotions about your new look. Don’t get discouraged short hair is very versatile and you may come to love it and stick with it!
Don't stress over your short curls but love them anyway! Shrinkage is apart of the natural hair deal and depending on your hair texture you may experience more shrinkage than others. Ladies, play with color and go ahead and try different styles. For example, Mohawks/Faux Mohawks are fun and one of my personal favorites! Bantu knots are also something to try out and you can dress them up with hair jewelry.

Experiment with your short do’s, and try playing with head scarfs and wraps. There are many colors and patterns to choose from, and big hooped earrings will never go out of style. Opt for protective styles like braids and wigs. Caution, although wearing a protective style can be beneficial, remember to take care of your own hair. Protective styles should not feel too tight or feel like you got a major headache sis.
Keep your curls healthy and happy by making sure you keep your hair hydrated. For example, using light oils like Argan oil, Almond oil, or Jojoba oil can be good for your natural hair. These oils easily penetrate into the hair shafts and if your hair can handle the heavier oils like, Coconut oil, Black Jamaican Castor oil, or Olive oil, go ahead and try out some of those. Using shampoo to unclog pores and product residue off your scalp can help aid in natural hair growth!

Want that extra length? Ponytails extensions are making a come back. You can get them at your local beauty supply stores. They are inexpensive and are quick and easy to install. Protective styles, are great to retain length, and help you change up your look. I encourage you to change the positioning of the ponytail. Removing your protective units or extensions and letting your own hair breathe is extremely important! This can help avoid breakage and tension on your edges. This also applies to headbands because wearing headbands constantly can cause rubbing and pulling against the scalp and edges. I have had my own breakage and alopecia episodes.
Let your hair breathe and rest once in a while between styling. Below are some cute natural hairstyle ideas for short hair and accessories to play with. Hope this helps, and let us know what styles you are thinking of doing! Share this post with fellow naturals who needs a little inspiration for their short hair do’s!

3 Tips That Helped Me Have Clear Skin
#1 Diet and Exercise
Your skin is the largest organ on your body, and in many cases the most under cared for organ. Seems simple enough to drink water and put on lotion, however the skin needs much more TLC. Diet and exercise is a great way to show your skin some tender love and care, and this is because what you put in is what you get out. So eating leafy greens, raw live food, such as veggies, fruits, and foods with seeds will give the body back its natural glow and hydration. Scientists say daily exercise even a simple 30 minute walk everyday will not only get in some good cardio, but your skin will thank you. This is because between moisturizing, washing, scrubbing, and drinking water, your skin does not excrete the harmful bacteria’s that get stuck in your pores. So that’s when exercise comes into play and provides a much faster excreting process. Exercise helps the body force out those toxins that are deeply set into the skin. Leaving you with clear pores with a stronger defense against the breakouts.

#2 Sanitization
Although working out exceeds the deep dirt and bacteria, protecting your skin and insuring you use clean and sanitized materials when in contact with your skin is another major factor to skin care. Clean hands aren’t just for the kitchen! Before washing my face or even showering I wash my hands thoroughly. This is because with all the things we touch throughout the day, by touching your skin and transferring additional germs this builds up a larger layer of bacteria increasing breakouts. So changing your face towel every week is a safe practice as well as cleaning all facial brushes, and any facial bar soaps be sure to remove residue after washing.
#3 Self Love and Positive Thinking
Lastly, be sure to tap into our inner beauty with positive thinking and stress less situations in your life. Being in a great place mentally and emotionally can reduce the appearance of acne as well. Science shows that women hold emotions in, this can increase health issues, and in turn random pimples appear and increase of feminine hygiene lacks. So starting with your mental health and stability can help with the natural glow and natural beauty that we all possess inside. Below is a face washing regiment that I have used for over 2 years. What this skin care regiment will do is give you a pure look and allow your skin to breath and be at its most healthy state when products are involved!

The 5 Step Skin Care Regimen Every Black Woman Should Know
Step 1: Drink Water
I always like to start the day with drinking a bottle or 2 of water. This gives your skin a nice awakening from a dormant sleep.
Step 2: Use Warm Water On Your Face
This step is to wash your face with warm water. This opens the pores in your face and allows moisture in while also breaking down any left over product or make-up that was trapped inside.
Step 3: Use A Plant Based Soap
Lather your face with a plant based soap of your choice. My favorite is from a company called “ Exotic Spa and Body” and it’s their “Oatmeal Coconut Facial Bar”. This bar contains cold cut oats and fresh shredded coconut with essential oils from both. The oats act as a calming agent while the coconut acts as the moisturizing agent. The two together act as a moisturizing soap, so you get moisture and cleaning without stripping.

Step 4: Rinse Your Face With Warm And Cold Water
Rinse your skin with warm water to thoroughly remove product. After, rinse your face again with cold water to shock your pores into closing and locking in all that moisture.
Step 5: Pat Your Face Dry and Apply Oil
Pat your face partially dry with a slight amount of moisture left over. Then apply Vitamin E oil, or JoJoba oil. Either of the two provide natural radiant moisture while allowing the skin to breath throughout the day.
Using this 5 step skin care regimen for black women will give you a new found confidence in your beautifully melanated Skin!

Natural Hair Care: Eco Styler Gel Is Cancelled
It looks like the natural hair care community has made a decision and Eco styler gel is cancelled! Here’s why Eco Styler Gel shouldn’t be used for natural hair styles and some of its effects!
By: Emily-Ann
It looks like the natural hair care community has made a decision! Eco styler gel has been voted off the island. Recently, videos all over youtube have surfaced and many are expressing their thoughts on the subject. Our naturals are sharing their concerns, and cariogenic effects and their harmful properties. I knew this was going to happen eventually. I am not going say I haven’t circulated a few coins in this product. Personally, I was not impressed with the product and what it did in my hair. We may love the end results of having your edges laid and your baby hair’s acting right but at what expense?
>> SEE ALSO: Transitioning to Natural Hair: Are You Ready?
Being educated and working in the healthcare field this is very concerning. I read the ingredients and wasn’t impressed or surprised what was listed. We should be just as health-conscious of our bodies concerning what we consume and place on it. I remember getting some solid advice, which stated “ If you won't put it on your skin don’t put in on your hair. Arm yourself with the information so you can make the best hair care products decisions for your natural hair.
Now I have done a little bit of research, and the FDA approves these ingredients. They claim no more than 5% should be in one product. If you are applying this product over a long period of time, imagine what you are doing to your hair, skin, and body with chronic exposure. Although, Eco Styler gel states that only use 1% of these ingredients in their hair care products. One percent is too much for me. I rather use alternatives that are much healthier and better for me. Side effects along with the chemical names are listed below!

Triethanolamine (buffing agent and fragrance)
Skin,eye, and hair irritation

Bladder/ liver cancer

Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate (perseverative)

Polysorbate 20 (alcohol, yet again mix with another chemical it’s toxic ethylene oxide)
Skin allergies
Damaging animal organs
Tetrasodium EDTA (preservatives)
Causes cancer
Brakes down skin
Cause skin condition like eczema
Potent eye irritant
I have provided a few links below that goes into detail about the side effects of each chemical. Type in the chemical name and the description will pop up. I hope this has helped you make up your mind when it comes to ditching that eco styler gel. Opt for more natural way of laying those edges. Hairstyles For Curly Hair: Spring Time Is Curl Time
Spring time is curl time and you may be wondering what to do with your hair! Here are some tricks and hairstyles for curly hair that can be used during the warmer months!
By: Emily-Ann
Hello Naturals,
It’s spring time and I find myself looking in the mirror and wondering what to do with my hair? Here, are some of my tricks and preferred hairstyles during the warmer months.
Tip #1: Use hair jewelry as an expression of your unique style. Personally, I love gold braid cuffs! They are cute jewelry pieces that can be purchased at your local beauty supply store. I am sure you have already seen them on many of the your natural hair sistas! They come in different patterns and designs.
>> SEE ALSO: Top 10 Things You Should Know About Natural Hairstyles For Black Women
Tip#2: Pinterest, is still a really good place to seek hairstyle ideas. I use it here and there to get my creative juices flowing. It helps when you just no clue what style to go with that week. Side note try not to compare hair length, and growth with the ladies on there.
Tip #3: High buns, quick and easy and look great with that dress you bought a week ago. Try buying statement pieces to add to your outfit. I bought these beautiful gold butterfly earrings for date night. When in doubt do a high bun is my answer, you can never go wrong with a good bun.
>> SEE ALSO: Breaking the Rules: Natural Hair Treatment Tips
Tip #4: I caution all my naturals with this suggestion and it’s adding color! Now, I know you want to color your hair, but do little research first. Make sure your moisture game is on point. Moisture, is essential for natural hair growth, and during the coloring process moisture tends to leave the hair. Keeping and maintaining your color is a job in itself, just make sure you are ready to commit. If you not add color with extensions or wigs. I always stress knowing your hair type, because ultimately that can play a role in how your hair takes colour and keeps it. Remember, everything in moderation and use your judgement call on high manipulation styles.
Disclaimer: Seek a professional consultation and or stylist when choosing to colour. They will be best person to advise you on the colouring process.

Tip #5: Last but not least, for my brides-to-be, there are many websites and magazines that now offer styling ideas for naturals. I am amazed at the diversity in styles now available to us! I see many trends with flowers being incorporated into the hair, so wear your crown with pride and add a little floral inspiration. If you’re feeling diva-like rock that diamond accent piece to bring out that wow factor. As the old saying goes, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”.-Song by,Carol Channing,"Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend"

“What do you put in your spray bottle?” We discuss natural hair care products for black hair and some ingredients for your spray bottle that can be found in your home or purchased at a store!
By: Emily-Ann
Hey naturals,
I have been asked this question many times from friends and family. “What do you put in your spray bottle?” Well, here it is my favorite ingredients, and they can be found in your home or purchased at a store! The first ingredient should always be in your spray bottle is good old H2O!
H2O
I am sure that you have all heard that water is essential for our body to perform at its best. It can be said to be the same for your natural hair care. Water helps to feed the hair follicle which then aids in natural hair growth. Drinking, as well as spraying your hair with water should be the first thing you do when you feel that your natural curly hair is looking a little dull. As lovely as water is - it can be a bit boring. Add rose water in your spray bottle. There are so many great benefits to rose water that it’s almost impossible not to add it!
Rose Water
Its smells amazing and very settle
You can make it yourself, kind of like a DIY just by looking on Google or Youtube.
Stabilizes your hair’s PH balance
Great for hair treatment for damaged hair
Anti-inflammatory and natural antiseptic properties
Have you been trying to figure out how to prevent dandruff? This is necessary for your natural hair journey.
This is a major key if you're looking for ways of how to make your hair grow faster
Bonus Great for your skin as a toner as well

Leave-in Conditioner
This is an awesome way to retain moisture and great for detangling your curls. You can use this in replace of the rose water. I’ve combined both rose water and leave-in and my curls feel good and smell wonderful. I currently use Aussie Moisture, as my leave-in and find that my hair loves it. I find that because I have colored my hair on top of being low priority my hair requires a lot of moisture attention.
Aloe Vera Juice
Aloe vera juice has so many benefits, I have been using this plant since I was young! Even before I knew of the great properties it holds! It’s great for both hair and skin, but I will just discuss the great benefits for our hair. Aloe Vera juice, can be found at your local health food store. Desert of Lily is a popular brand with 99% consideration. This plant is a pact with repairing enzymes, amino acids, and vitamins that help with hair appearance and overall health. I have recently added this to my daily routine. I have seen improvement in thickness within a few days. Keep in mind once you open the bottle and transfer it into your spray bottle you will have to keep it in the refrigerated to keep the Aloe Vera Juice from going bad. I also drink this daily for added benefits. Although, if you are pregnant, please consult your doctor before use.

Yes, essential oils can be added to your bottle. Natural oils, like peppermint and rosemary both, have properties that will help in the hair follicle to promote stimulation and is necessary on how to grow your hair fast. It is suggested that you use an carry oil with peppermint due to its high concentration and possible irritation. There you have it guys, just some ideas for your spray bottle. Top 10 Things You Should Know About Natural Hairstyles For Black Women
There is more to the journey than just hair! Check out this list of tips that every natural should know about natural hairstyles for black women!
By: Emily-Ann
Hello natural beauties!
I have compiled a list of things I think every natural girl should know. I have said it many times, and I will say it again. There is more to this natural hair journey than just hair. I know you're wondering, what else could there be? These are things I wish someone told me. I'm glad you’re still reading cause I’m about to spill the tea hunny! Here is my list on things you need to know about natural hairstyles for african american women! Let’s get right into it!
Top 10 Things You Should Know About Natural Hairstyles For Black Women
1. Knots, fairy knots, huge knots, SSK (single strand knots), knots, knots, and more knots - Yes, I meant to drill it into your head. Regular trims can prevents these annoying things from taking hold of your curls. Not only are they a hassle to get rid, but type 4 hair is most prone to knots. Moisture control is a preventive measure to control knots. Try to take your time when going through your hair and finding knots, be patient and release each strand of hair one at a time. I do this while watching my favorite show, listening to audiobook, or watching my favorite youtuber.
2. Product Junkie - Be careful not to fall into this trap. I know it can be very tempting to buy every new product that comes out. Companies often advertise to us products that will promote, control, hydrate, detangle, and shine to your natural hair. Trying new products is okay, but finish the ones you have. Another alternative is to pass it to a friend or family member because it may be suited for someone else curls or natural hair. Make sure there is still a good amount of product in the container before passing it along.
3. Dry hair - It’s not a drill people, tackle this from the start and you will thank me later for this! Learn how to use moisture methods and maintain ph balance. Dry hair can cause headaches and sometimes even test your patience. Experiment with different oils, essential oils and conditioners out on the market. Find out which one works best for you!
4. Split ends - Now this is due to that fact that moisture and protein balance must be implemented in your routine. Some naturals like myself are protein sensitive. Yeah, there is such a thing lol! Some products have protein ingredients and that’s enough. Also a more gentle approach could possibly be rice water rinse.
5. Different hair types is a real thing, know yours and know it well. There are many different types of hair textures. The scale ranges from Type 1- Type 4; A through C. You can take a strand of your hair and by using many of the charts found on different website you can find out which type you fall into. Yes, you can belong to more than one, it’s normal. I personally have Type 4 A&B texture. Which is said to be prone to dryness and knots, I soon found out quickly how true this fact is, and have made it my mission to master this characteristic of my hair pattern and texture. Now there has been many debates about hair typing. I will leave that topic for another day. Get to know you hair and its likes and dislikes.
6. Comments and questions will come - Ignore the rude ones! People will have something to say all the time. It’s time to get a thicker skin, and when I mean thicker skin; I mean not caring what anybody says. Not everyone will understand your decision to go natural. Know that you are not alone and surround yourself with like minded people. Retain your mindset to stay positive, and most importantly be kind to yourself. What you feel on the inside will display on the outside. Stay in good energy and patience will follow.
Leonard Mc Lane/Getty Images - Natural Hairstyles For Black Women
7. Having more than one hair type and texture is normal - I have mentioned this before and it is perfectly normal to have more than one hair texture on your head. We are made up on our parents DNA, and that comes with taking on their characteristic traits and features. This includes the hair on our head, you can learn to manage it and promote growth. To work against your hair is to know defeat and stress. Trust me, I have had a few setbacks that have played with my own positive mindset. To the point where I did not want to go outside. This feeling usually subsides and life returns back to normal. You will have your moments, know that is is just a moment and it will pass.
8. Breaking hair tools - Yes, you will break a few of them. I broke two hair blow dryers with the attachments. I figure it was a sign, and no heat equals no heat damage. It saved me from doing more harm than good. I chose to look at the positive side of this mishap and really focus on length retention. Less chance of me creating heat damage to my already colored hair.
9. Hair porosity - It matters and will affect your product application and purchases. This simply means how well your hair responds to absorption of water. High porosity hair means that water gets easily absorbed into the hair shaft. Low porosity has a much harder time holding on to water. This the reason why sealing in moisture becomes very important for naturals with low porosity. A water test can help you find which you are. Take a single strand of hair and place it in a cup of water. If your hair sinks to the bottom, you have high porosity. If you hair floats you’ve got low porosity. Even if you take your spray bottle, and you notice the water sits on your hair, you have low porosity.
10. Have a set plan for wash day and daily routine - Planning out your wash days or just listening to your hair will help when it comes to keeping your hair healthy and happy! Circle the day on your calendar and plan out what you are going to do. For example, hot oil treatment or deep conditioning etc. Clarifying your hair with mild gentle shampoo is very important too!

Bonus: Dying your hair, before you have a good hair care routine may not the best idea. Get your moisture and protein balance down pack first. Once you get that out the way, pick a color and enjoy your naturally curly hair! One last thing, the tighter the curls the more prone you are to knots, unfortunately.
Hair + Knots of any kind= trimming time, or light dusting of the ends is needed

Breaking the Rules: Natural Hair Treatment Tips
It's okay to break some rules when dealing with natural hairstyles for black women! Here are some natural hair treatment tips for naturals! Read why your natural hair treatment can differ from other all natural black women!
By: Emily-Ann
I know you are all familiar with saying, “The rules are meant to be broken”. I think it’s no different when it comes to hairstyles for african american women. Now, I am not telling you to completely break all of the rules, but there are a few you can tweak or just throw it all way. I’ve listed a few that I feel you can do without.
The first one would be the Denman Brush. This is a staple in the natural hair community and the brush is said to be a must-have when you are dealing with natural hairstyles for black women. The rule here is to remove every other row; I did not do that, needless to say I found the brush to do more harm than good. I’ve used this brush, and all it did was cause grief. It literally pulled out more hair than anything else and not only did I break this rule but I threw it in back of my closet never to be seen again. Okay, well that is not entirely true. I can’t stand not being organized, even if it’s something as small as that. I did purchase a plastic bin to place all my hair tools.

There is another debate that seems to be going on in the natural hair community. The question that seems to be on everyone’s mind lately. Do you co-wash vs. use shampoo? Now for those of you who are new, let me break down real quick to you. The term co-wash, simply means to use conditioner in place of shampoo to perform your washes. There is a lot of back and forth about this particular method. I have done this method for awhile and I can honestly tell you that I have mix feelings. I say break this rule, it’s okay to do co-wash once in awhile, but honestly I did not see any real benefits.
>> SEE ALSO: Top 10 Things You Should Know About Natural Hairstyles For Black Women
There are so many chemical free shampoos now on the market, and wide selection to choose from. We no longer have that small section in the drug store. Growing up my mother had to take me to a small neighborhood beauty supply store just to get my natural hair care products. I can now walk-in a walmart or another store, and find black hair care products on shelves. It’s okay to put back the shampoo in your routine, just make sure to read the label. I can give you example; I am currently using Shea Moisture’s Raw Shea Butter line. My main focus is on moisture retention, so I purchase products that will promote just that. I have type 4 natural hair, with low porosity so my hair goals may be different from your own. I find that it is in great benefit to know your natural hair types and porosity level for this very reason. Trust me, you’ll thank me later for encouraging you to know your natural hair types.

When it comes to oils, this would be the top of the list for best natural hair products in the natural hair community. If you guessed Coconut oil, you are correct! I am not one of these naturals that has success with this oil, so don't feel bad because I feel your pain. I say break this rule too! Whoever said that coconut oil works for all natural hair types is lying lol! I often discuss this in my own personal blog post at Blushgirlcurl, and I am very honest when it comes to expressing my feelings about natural black hair products. Go ahead, put it down and break this rule, if it doesn't work for your or your hair that’s okay! Pass it on to another natural who may have some success with coconut oil. It’s okay hunny, I won’t tell!
Last but definitely not least; the liquid oil cream method or LOC method, which is the grandfather of all rules when it comes to learning how to take care of natural hair. This is like the holy grail of natural hair care rules and until recently, I thought breaking this rule would doom your chances of success! I thought you had to follow this method when trying to figure out how to make my hair grow faster. I happen to come across an article that suggested trying a different order for you hair type. This concept surprised me and I did try this out to see if it would work for me. I broke this rule and the order, I am now using LCO for my method of choice. If you are lost and have absolutely no idea what I am talking about, allow me to elaborate further. The LOC method, stands for Leave-in, Oil, and Cream, which is the chosen standard for sealing in moisture in the hair for extended periods of time. I broke this rule, well kinda and switched the order to see if the results would change. I switched it up and found that my natural hair responded much better to the LCO, rather than the LOC.
Don't be afraid to try different methods to see which one works for you! Let me know in the comments below, what rules have you broken and have gained success?
