Are you aware of the hair care product lines that aren’t black-owned but are targeted to black people? You might want to do some research before you get your next restock. I myself, have purchased products thinking that I was supporting a black-owned brand, but turns out it was sold to a major company a few years ago.

Given the current times and the situation, more of our community members are actively promoting and becoming more aware of how they circulate their dollars. Companies like, Shea Moisture is now owned by Unilever. Shea Moisture was created by Nyema Tubman and Richelieu Dennis. Another well-known brand or line is Cantu is now owned by the PDC brand. Carol’s Daughter is now owned by L’Oreal, which they acquired in 2014. Check out the list of non-Black owned hair products!

Noticed A Change In Your Products Yet?

I noticed the change in the Deva Curl line when I bought their shampoo and conditioner which was geared toward curls with more need for moisture. I made a quick switch and went to Shea moisture for a minute, but found yet again the product switched up on me. My hair can tell the difference. Look up the lines that you are interested in and make the decision that is best for you.

Buying black isn’t just about supporting your own but knowing for the fact you are supporting men and women who do their thing in the beauty world. There are so many people already dipping their hands and filling their pockets with our needs to look and feel beautiful in a society that did not plan to celebrate our unique beauty and features.

I myself, have to do better in reading the labels and really paying attention to what goes into our beauty products. In the long run, dealing with toxicity levels in our bodies is harmful and throws off homeostasis and causes symptoms that have become normalized.  It can effect the way your body detoxes to the way your body reacts to different beauty products.

Black Owned Hair Products

What Does This Mean For The Consumer Of Color?

As you know or may not know we spend the most money when it comes to beauty. The estimated figured is around $7.5 billion dollars a year. This is twice the amount of our counter parts. Making a better decision involves being well informed and making the decision to better yourself and your well being. I rather purchase a beauty items that I know are made by us to fit our personal needs.

The needs of the people of color, I feel will be made a priority when its made by us for us. The level of understanding runs much more deeper, when a company has a connection to their targeted audience and consumer. It’s hard to relate to your audience when you have not had to experience any of the common situations or battles with hair or skin type. We come in all different shades of melanin.

It’s a sense of pride when you are supporting your own. We have so much buying power and yet we are always given the second thought. People like our girl Rih Rih are changing the way representation is seen and heard. Heck, she knocked out the competition with her Fenty show showcasing her lingerie line. I am a big fan of her makeup line as well. Let’s continue the path and make it possible to be bosses and make powerful moves in the music, beauty, education, film industry and everything in between.

Natural Hair Journey: A Love And Hate Relationship

The natural hair journey is a journey which includes self growth and appreciation for your natural hair, but it also has its ups and downs! We discuss it here!

Natural Hair
There is a fine line between love and hate
— Simone Elkeles

By: Emily-Ann

Speaking of relationships, I am referring to the personal relationship you have with your hair, not the romantic one you look for all your life, and stumble on in your 30’s just before giving up. Yes, the relationship you have with your hair, the one that made you look for the perfect bottle of shampoo and conditioner at the beauty supply store and the right combination of oils, moisturizers, and (DC) deep conditioners.

This natural hair relationship can bring on some sleepless nights with you trying to figure out if the styling product or tool is right for you. The countless hours of watching Youtube tutorials and still finding it difficult to execute. The fights you have with your hair when cooperation is all you want. Instead, your hair feels like being stubborn and out of control and you are almost on the edge of calling it a quits. Then something good happens, a stranger or friend compliments you on your hair, and you realize things are not so bad after all.

Natural Hair

I am indeed comparing our beautiful curly hair to something like a romantic relationship. I have lost count how many times I have had emotional distress because of it. I wanted to express that even veterans in the game still get annoyed, and it is normal. As much as I praise natural hair, it can be very challenging and difficult to handle. Now I am not saying this to turn you away from becoming natural or to discontinue on your natural journey, but to encourage you as this is something we all go through.

If things are not complicated enough you then have to navigate your way through our current society. Ducking curious hands and questions that want to touch. Looking at social media and seeing another form of culture apportion by other trend followers. Our ancestors endured many things during their captivity, life in the new world, and constantly searching for ways to adapt. We become a chameleon of sorts.

We face discrimination from family, strangers, and friends, like when someone says “I couldn’t go natural, I don’t know how you do it”. If shade isn’t being thrown your way, it's the ridiculous questions. Texture discrimination is real, workplace vulnerability, and wash day can take some time to get used to. All these things can make you question whether or not you are doing the right thing.

I’ll give you an example, I have a coworker who I adore. Her comments do get to me sometimes. Comments like, “I like your hair better when it is relaxed.” It’s her opinion but it’s comments like that I’ve had to deal with on a regular basis. This is an older, and mature woman of color saying this. I roll my eyes and change the subject.

Natural Hair

I am here being transparent with you, because in a world with IG models, trend followers, and setters, I think this world needs a little more authenticity. We are constantly being shown unrealistic images on how we should look, act, and sound in the beauty world. It is okay to do your glow up at a different pace. Your hair is beautiful no matter what state it’s in or texture.

Being natural is just as hard if not more so without additional comments and stares. While others pay millions of dollars to look like us we are born this way. It’s time we start encouraging ourselves and others to embrace our unmatched beauty as a black culture. A healthy attitude towards social media is also key, as well all are aware of the dangers of low self-esteem and the beauty world.

Here's a question for you, did you think that being natural would be easier or less expensive? I sure did, not only was I shocked with the constant maintenance and how expensive it can be. Yes, I have second thoughts about being natural, it’s completely understandable. Now with the coronavirus pandemic keeping us indoors for now. You now have time to do little research or even make new changes to your hair care regimen. Now you have the time, the only setback is many of our beauty supply stores are close due to the COVID-19. Online stores will be your best friend right now. Take advantage of this time to educate yourself.

Leave your comments and let’s start a conversation. Don’t forget to follow us on all social media platforms and share our content!

By: Lauryn Bass

Natural hair is finally getting the respect it deserves, honey! The curls that crown the Queens and Kings of this earth are thriving and I am here-for-it. No matter what the shape or form, our hair needs lots of care and everyone has their own techniques for maintaining its health and growth, but sometimes the length just seems stunted. Aside from the shrinkage, the size of your afro just seems to be remaining the same, yeah? Here are 4 solutions to boost your puff to flourish.

Grow it, Show it! 4 Tips For Growing Your Natural Hair

1. Try Tea Tree Or Peppermint oil!

These oils have been said to remove dead skin cells from your scalp which allows for the hair follicles to spring back into life! It also helps all the love and nutrients that you’ve added to your hair gain unlimited access to do what you want it to do! Also, when you use it, it creates this breezy feeling in your scalp that is actually a rush of oxygen flowing which is also a good indicator of future growth!

4 Tips For Growing Your Natural Hair

2. Deep condition!

Deep conditioners are so great at penetrating the hair shaft and replacing dryness with lots of proteins that strengthen the hair. As your hair gets stronger, it reduces shedding and breakage. It provides moisture for hair that may not get all the care that it needs during your busy schedule. Make sure to research the different kinds and what benefits each ingredient provides for your specific hair type and texture.

4 Tips For Growing Your Natural Hair

3. Lessen Manipulation!

As protective styling is known for helping hair growth, it can also stun the progress of growth. When you are constantly combing, brushing, pulling, and tying up your hair into the various hairstyles we love and adore, this maneuvering can cause breakage. When styling, be cognizant of how much stress you are putting on your strands and try to limit how many styles you are whipping together back-to-back. Be sure to give your hair a break and let it be.

4. Cut It Off!

Honey, trims are your friend! I know it may sound counterproductive, but you have to lose some to win some. Literally, getting routine trims are so healthy for your hair and helps it to grow. Split ends get more and more worse as time goes by, traveling up the shaft. They also weigh your hair down and drain the nutrients from the healthy part of your hair. If that isn’t enough, when you’re wearing your fro, they don’t look good!

Grow it, Show it! 4 Tips For Growing Your Natural Hair

As you try out new ways to promote your hair growth, remember to do things with care. Your hair is a statement, a representation of who you are. When it is thriving, it boosts confidence and adds a positive note to your day. Keep your crown shining bright!

You may be a first-time mother or you’ve had multiple children. Your fears and concerns are all the same. What do I do with my hair, and when am I going to find the time to do it?

  • Time management, talk to your partner or family member so that you can get away to do your hair.

  • Try to stay clear from adding new products. May lead to skin/hair sensitivity due to the increased hormone production flowing in your body

  • Washing your hair in the sink will be safer and you can have your partner help you with the hard reach places. I imagine being out of breath as you get bigger which will have an impact on how long you stand in the shower. Anything to make your journey to motherhood much easier is a plus for any mother.

  • Look for low manipulation styles that won’t cause much tension. Let’s face it a newborn will want all your attention.

  • Keep it simple with your wash day. Pre-pooh to help with detangling and cut time spent in half. A good cleansing shampoo, moisturizing conditioner, and leave-in style as desired and moisturize as normally. Well, moisturized hair will thrive and grow, it just needs the right environment.

Not only will this affect the way you plan your day to day life but also the way you do your hair. Now, I know the first thing is to grab a wig or put it in a protective style.

You have to make time to do self-care as well. The protective style will be your best friend for the first few months after the baby is born. Given the late-night feedings and hectic lifestyle change. It may be weeks or months before you get your little one on a regular schedule. Your life will be all about making adjustments and your hair routine is no exception.

I am all about simplicity, life already has its challenges. Let’s not add more stress to what is supposed to be a happy milestone in your life. As a reminder listen to your hair and go with your instincts. If you want to head over to a stylist, just until you can get back to normal and have a little more time it is perfectly alright.

Protective Styling Tips: How Much Hair Do I Need For My Protective Hairstyle?

It’s that time again where wearing protective styles are necessary! Here are some guidelines on purchasing hair and how much to purchase to complete your desired look!

Protective Hairstyle

By: Emily-Ann

Happy New Year! Are you guys tired of the cold yet? Having a hard time deciding what hairstyle to do to get you through the rest of the winter season?

It’s that time again where wearing protective styles are being worn mostly in the next few months. Recently, I got my hair done in Fulani braids, and I noticed that I was unclear on how many packs of hair to purchase. I mean a few clicks and a search and I was able to find what I needed. I know if I am looking for this information then I know my readers would benefit from this information as well.

Here are some guidelines on purchasing hair and how much to purchase to complete the desired look. If you can do the style you’re looking to achieve even better. On the other hand, if you are like me, you’ll want a quick reference and guideline.

Protective Hairstyles

Many occasions I’ve walked into a store and no worker would approach me and ask if I needed any help. It’s nice to screenshot this guide and have it as a little personal assistant. It’s a nice feeling to know when you don’t completely rely on the girls working in the beauty supply store. I feel sort of unwelcomed. I usually do my own research and try products that my hair may respond well to. The only time I may ask a question is to inquire about if they have a particular product.

I did experience my braids being too tight, and this why I express the importance of letting the stylist know when it too tight. It’s best to give your hair about a week or two between protective styles. It’s like giving your hair and edges a well desserts break.

Let us know what kind of protective styles your doing this winter. Don’t forget to subscribe and follow us on all of our social media outlets to stay connected to all of the wonderful content. Here’s to an amazing 2020 ladies, may this year be better than the last! Cheers to abundance, wealth, and health. Claim into existence for yourself and others!

Makeup Tips: The 411 On Achieving Flawless Makeup Foundation Coverage

Fine lines, dark spots, large pores and blemishes are all a girl's worst nightmare when it comes to trying to achieve that flawless looking face! Here are some tips to achieving flawless makeup foundation coverage!

Flawless Makeup Foundation Coverage

By: Tialena Evans

Fine lines, dark spots, large pores and blemishes are all a girl's worst nightmare when it comes to trying to achieve that flawless looking face! Do you find yourself trying to mask those imperfections with layers of caked on foundation and concealer that’s three shades too light? While it can seem frustrating and out of reach, look no further. I’m here to spill the tea on how to achieve that CoverGirl status face!

Which Way? The Clean Way!

It’s no secret that before applying face makeup you need to start on a fresh face, but what if I told you soap and water isn’t enough? Well, I’m telling you it’s definitely not enough! Although it cleanses the surface of your face, your pores are still filled with dirt, and traces of oil and makeup residue.

The solution to eliminating these hidden nuisances is a quick 30 second cotton ball swipe of your favorite alcohol-free face toner. A face toner is an absorbing liquid that also helps to correct and balance the pH of your skin, and helps control acne. This process should be done after washing your face with a cleanser to remove what isn’t visible to the naked eye.

We Making Moisture Moves

Now, before you even begin to grab ahold of your foundation brush, you need to pick up a bottle of H2O. Water consumption is the most essential piece to a smooth foundation application. It brings moisture to your face and lips, adds a natural glow, and promotes elasticity in the skin, which in turn slows down and decreases the development of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s like a pre-moisturizer before you even add the real thing. This is especially pertinent to individuals with naturally dry & flakey skin, like myself.

Once you’ve gotten your water intake situated, it’s time to moisturize your face with your favorite non-fragrance moisturizer. It is important to have a natural and neutral scent cream that will not irritate the face, thus causing a rash or unwarranted breakout. Everyone’s face takes to different substances, so someone with dry skin might need to use a thicker cream, while those with a more oily face may want to go with something a little lighter that won’t add onto the overproduction of face oils throughout the day.

Once moisturized, it’s time to prime your face. Primers are a base for your foundation, which allows it to go on smoother and last longer. They come in the form of creams, gels and powders. They also come in different shades, such as yellow, orange, green and others. These shades are dependent on skin tones and sun exposure. You should do your research on which primer is best for your and your face before purchasing to ensure you’re providing your skin with the best products to help illuminate it.

Brush vs Sponge: Battle of the Applicators

Okay, so this is where personal preferences come into play. The two most common foundation application tools are the brush and the sponge, which is also known as a beauty blender. Then, you have those insurgents who are contempt with using nothing more than a finger twirl to paint their faces, but that’s a discussion or another day.

Natural Hair Tips: 12 Protective Styling Tips For The Winter

Winter time is here which means taking care of your hair and edges is essential! Here are some protective styling tips for the winter!

247 Live Culture
Protective Styling Tips For The Winter

By: Emily-Ann

It’s getting cold outside baby, and your hair is letting you know it. In my case I’ve got type 4 A/B hair. This means my hair is prone to extra dehydration around this time. I found that my spray bottle and black Castor oil are my best friend. In saying that, I have been scrolling through Pinterest, and looking at protective styles. I am seeing beautiful workmanship in braids and interesting details in hair jewelry. Our culture is so diverse and talented I kind of forget to celebrate just that.

We express our self through hair, dance, music, and clothing. It’s really great to see the different ways of braiding your hair. If you're looking for some inspiration, you can definitely find a ton of work on Pinterest. Here are some ideas to try out this holiday season. I know for many of us, we are the caregivers in our family big or small. The last thing you want to think about it is your hair. I’m sure your hair will understand and appreciate the tiny break.

Don’t forget to take mini breaks in between protective styling and be kind to your edges. Speak up with your stylist if you feel the braiding is too tight as well. Happy styling everyone.

Reminders

  • Give your edges a break, the constant manipulation can do more harm than good.

  • Keep your scalp moisturized by using applicants with your favorite mixture. My mixture is Aussie moisture conditioner, and Olive Oil

  • Get a good sealant, Black Castor oil, Grapeseed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, and Jojoba Oil. These are just a few great oils.

  • Get hot oil treatments and or a protein mask. If your hair isn’t sensitive to protein treatments.

  • Use heat to help products penetrate the hair follicles. For example, personal heat cap, hooded dryer, or for the lazy natural use your shower steam to help apply products. It works just as well.

  • Apply the Greenhouse method for moisture retention. This is achieved by placing a plastic bag/cap over your hair and leave the bag/cap overnight to let your natural body heat do the work. Place a satin scarf or bonnet over your hair and continue the night time routine. In the morning remove it and let your hair dry. Do this method maybe 1-2 times a week.

  • Pre poo your hair with your favorite conditioner. The more slip the better, helps to avoid breakage and retain the length you did achieve.

  • Trim your edges as it’s the oldest and weakest part of your hair

  • Part your hair in sections, much easier to work with

  • Sleep with a satin pillowcase or bonnet

  • Tuck in your ends

  • Try to purchase slick lined winter accessories, less snagging and pulling of the hair

Determining Your Hair Porosity | The Key to Healthy Natural Hair

Understanding your porosity level is essential in understanding what products to use! Here are some tips to maintaining healthy natural hair!

Hair Porosity

By: Natasha Marsh

I am still quite new to the natural hair club. It was 9 months ago that I did the big chop and since then I have experimented with a plethora of natural hair products. I am starting to understand my hair a lot better but of course, there have been some bad hair days sprinkled in. A few months ago I was at the airport going through TSA when the agent looked at my passport picture, showing myself with a long mane, and then at me with my current short hair and said “so you chopped it all huh sis”. Beaming with delight and confidence I said “sure did”. To my surprise she says “ you should look up porosity” hands me back my passport and says “next”. At the time, I had no idea what hair porosity was, all I knew was this TSA agent didn’t have the friendliest tone in suggestion.

When I eventually looked up hair porosity I was shocked that my stylist never mentioned it, after all the times I inquired about what products were good for my hair. Porosity refers to how well your hair absorbs and holds moisture. Most naturals, like myself, only consider curl patterns when curating a hair care regime, but porosity could be the answer to all our bad hair days.

Basically, each individual hair strand is made of multiple layers. The outermost layer is called the cuticle. This layer opens up and allows oils and water to pass in and out of your hair. How porous hair can be is generally based off of genetics but can be greatly affected by coloring, heat styling or relaxing the hair.

Any woman with curls will tell you, caring for and styling curly hair is no easy task. Understanding your porosity level is essential in understanding what products to use. Generally there are three tiers-- low, medium, and high porosity. To figure out what tier you are, take the below test.

THE TEST

1. Float test- Take a couple of strands of hair from your combo or brush and drop them into a bowl of water. Make sure hair is clean as oil in hair can affect results. Let hair sit in the cup for at least 5 minutes. If your hair floats, you have low porosity. If it sinks, you have high porosity. 2. The slip n’ slide test: take a strand of hair and slide fingers toward the scalp. If you feel bumps along the way, this means that your cuticle is lifted and you have high porosity. If your fingers slip smoothly, then you have low porosity hair.

LOW POROSITY HAIR

Low Porosity Hair

Low porosity hair has a cuticle layer that is too tightly together, making it difficult for moisture or anything to enter the hair shaft. Generally you have low porosity if your hair takes a while to dry or if products sit on your hair instead of penetrate.

You’ll want to avoid using too many creams. The likelihood of buildup with multiple creams, shampoos, and conditioners, is high. If product is sitting on your hair it makes it harder for moisture to get through which ultimately leads to dryness. We recommend using lightweight formulas, indirect heat (hot water or heated deep conditioners) to open cuticles to let moisture in, and a weekly clarifying shampoo to remove residue.

MEDIUM POROSITY HAIR

Medium Porosity Hair

Hair with medium porosity is the sweet spot, often requiring slim to no maintenance. The cuticle layer is looser, allowing moisture to get in and preventing too much from escaping. Hair with normal porosity tends to hold styles well, and can easily be colored or permed. Over time, however, these heat processes can change hair from normal to high porosity. To keep medium porosity, you’ll want to look for products for normal to dry hair as there is no need for a lot of conditioning.

HIGH POROSITY HAIR

High Porosity Hair

If you have chemically processed hair or live in a big city with lots of pollutants you most likely fall into the high porosity category. The cuticle here has numerous gaps and holes, letting in too much moisture but instantly tangled or frizzed once dry. Essentially, getting the moisture in your hair is no problem, however, keeping it takes work. The key to high porosity is hydrating with moisturizing cleansing conditioners and leave-in conditioners, strengthen the cuticle with protein treatments, and locking in moisture with a gel or styler.

Natural Hair Tips: 5 Steps You Need to Know for Detangling Your Natural Hair

With summer around the corner, it’s time to let your hair down! Here are some helpful tips for detangling your natural hair and flaunting your curls!

Natural Hair Tips: How To Detangle Your Natural Hair

By: Emily-Ann

Welcome back to another post about your natural hair. I know it’s been a minute, so without further a due let’s get right into it. I know with summer on your mind, many of us are taking out those braids and maybe looking to do wash day. Wash days can be time-consuming and especially for those of us wearing protective styling. I know this process can be annoying, but I have finally got it down packed when it comes to detangling.

In preparation for wash day, my hair tends to have a lot of product build up. Needless to say, my hair is really good at letting me know when its time for a wash. I have listed the steps I used that have been the most successful for me lately.

Step1. Part your hair in four easy sections; this will help you with the detangling your hair faster. If you have medium-long length, then you will need to do a little bit more sectioning. Try parting your four sections and then again into two more sections and proceed from there.

>> RELATED: Natural Hair Care Products For Black Hair: What’s in Your Spray Bottle?

Step 2. Taking a section of your hair, spray water or have on hand your spray bottle mixture ready for application. Lightly spray the hair to prevent unwanted snagging and tugging of the hair. You never want to do this on really dry hair as it will only cause more damage than good.

Step 3. Take the ends of your hair and finger detangle the ends and remove any (single strain knots) ssk(s) or shedding hair. It may take a minute or two with this step if you have medium-long hair. This step may be tedious, but worth it to maintain healthy length retention. Once you’ve finger detangled your hair, you can now use a wide tooth comb to release the shedding hair. Start from the ends and work your way up through the sections of your hair.

Step 4. Two strain twist your hair until all sections are complete. I like to add pretreatment to my hair like light oil and sit under a hooded dryer, or you can steam your hair. This will help open up the hair follicles and stimulate absorption of conditioner or treatment.

Step 5. I like to wash my hair in the two strain twist and then apply many DC masque or treatment to the hair. Wash as usual and retwist hair, and at this point I like to let my air dry with my favorite product. Lately, Shea Moisture’s extra-moisture detangler is my go-to product for wash days!

Natural Hair Tips: How To Detangle Your Natural Hair

I find it doubles as great leave in for me, and re-apply about three more times throughout the week. My hair is left feeling super soft and easy to manage. I have tried many other products, but I keep coming back to this one. It is now a must-have and by far a staple of mine. Hopefully, I have helped someone who is finding detangling a challenge. Keep checking back with us for more helpful tips with natural hair!

Natural Tips For Healthy Happy Hair This Spring and Summer

It’s spring and natural curls have been on full display! Here are just a few tips and reminders to showing off your healthy natural hair!

Tips For Healthy Happy Hair This Spring and Summer

By: Emily-Ann

It’s spring and that means for some, natural curls will be on full display. Here are just a few reminders for those coming out of protective styling. Catching that well-deserved break DC (deep conditioning) is essential. Don’t forget the scissors for that trim. While taking down my hair from my most recent protective styling, and I realized that my mane needed CPR and a DC and yes a trim. Currently, I’m using Shea Moisture Raw Shea line deep masque. My hair loves the detangler and the DC treatment seems to be working really well.

Another reminder, wash and detangle in sections as this makes wash day bearable. I know wash days can be a pain and very time-consuming. You may want to look for products that do dual action. Dual products that speed up the time spent on your hair. Especially, the naturals with a busy schedule and on mommy duty with young ones.

Tips For Healthy Happy Hair This Spring and Summer

For my students in college, try setting aside a day or getting up early on the weekend to do your hair. I usually choose Saturdays when my energy is there, and Sundays can be set aside for other chores or activities. Use the many tools that are available to you, and what best works for your hair.

I know many are trying the crimp rods. Please let the trend pass by, especially if you are new to the natural game. Focus more on getting to know your beautiful hair ladies and less on the next trend. I see many of the IG and YouTube influencers trying all kinds of different hair tools. Take into consideration they may have been dealing with their hair a little longer than you. I say let the trend be a trend, the last thing you want to do is accumulate unnecessary tools. If you later want to try the look you can always revisit the hairstyle at a later date. I always stress the importance of getting to know your hair likes and dislikes.

Most importantly treat your hair with love and patience. I love to remind myself of the analogy of a plant. If you water it, it will grow and when nurtured it will flourish. Feed your hair the best of the best and watch the glow up!

I know many of us will still rock our lace front, bundles, and closures but remember to let your hair just be. Give your mane a rest from all that tugging and pulling every once and a while. Put the baby hairs on pause and let them be free. That’s all of my friendly reminders for loving on your natural hair.

Let us know how you plan to walk into this spring and summer this year!

Black Hair is Black History: Origin of Cornrows

Black hair is a major part of black history! We discuss the cultural impact and origin of cornrows!

Black Hair is Black History

By: Emily-Ann

Happy Black History Month naturals!

As you know the black community is never afraid to express ourselves and you can see it throughout our culture. No matter where we are in the world, we manage to display our black melanin magic. You can see it through our movies as the fashion and hair evolved throughout the decades. Celebrities like Halle Berry, Janet Jackson, M.C Hammer, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy just to name few. I can go on with the movie list, but you can watch any movies from 80-90”s with many black celebrities and see our influence. The oversized hats to the bodycon dress and the braids, top fades, and big hooped earrings (which I personally love) still, play a role in our self-expression as a culture. I am going to be highlighting on the hair from men and women and give you a little bit of history on black hairstyles and where they’ve started from.

Let's Talk Cornrows

Cornrow Braids, which are the proper term, not box braids originated in Africa. These beautiful detail braids have been in recorded history as early as 3000 B.C. You can see women wearing these braids to help identify what tribe they belonged to. The braids for men were a way to separate the warriors and kings in places like Ethiopia. Men like Tewodros II, who ruled Ethiopia from 1855-1868 and Yohannes IV, who ruled Ethiopia from 1872-1892 wore braids. Yohannes IV held the nickname of “King of Kings of Ethiopia” and “King of Zion”. In West Africa, braids used to display social economic status, spiritual beliefs, or material status.

Black Hair is Black History

Cornrows, became popular within the black community in America during the 60s-70s when black power was at an all time peek. Although, we have since then seen this hairstyle throughout the years and in our childhood. We always seem to agree on one thing, it will never be just a trend or something to try. It’s apart of our culture and the roots run deep within.

>> SEE ALSO: Natural Hair Tips: How To Safely Blowout Your Natural Hair

Braids were also used to help slaves escape on their road to freedom and women would wear specific braids to depict if there were roads to use, or who they can trust for help in their great escape. Black slaves had many ways of communicating, and braids were apart of that communication. As freed black slaves and generations after, braids slowly started to be a thing of the past. Now more than ever we are rediscovering this tradition and expanding our knowledge on the subject. My favorite so far would be the African Fulani Braids.

Black Hair is Black History: Origin of Cornrows

They were also deemed to be ghetto or seen to be inappropriate to wear. Women of color began to ditch the braids and opted for relaxers and we can’t forget those Jerry Curls products. Fast forward to today, our community is once again having to stand up for our culture. Calling out the people who are either profiting off it or mimicking it. It deems the questions, “Why do we always have to fight to honor our culture?” and “ Why is it a constant battle?”

Leave your comment below and share with us your thoughts and concerns! Check back next time were we continue to shed some light on the High Top Fade.

Natural Hair Tips: Top 5 Hair Gels For Natural Hair

What are the best hair gels to use for natural hair? We’re giving you a list of the top 5 hair gels all natural hair women need to know!

By: Emily-Ann

Welcome to 2019 naturals!

What are the best hair gels to use for natural hair? In no particular order, these gels will work for even the naturals with thick and curly hair. I never want to leave out my type 4 naturals, I got something on this list for you too!

1) Shine ‘n Jam Conditioning Gel Extra Hold

Shine ‘n Jam Conditioning Gel Extra Hold

This formula states it’s a moisturizing, non-flaking, non-greasy hold, with honey extract to help strengthen hair. Now being that my hair is type 4 with low porosity, I can appreciate the honey ingredient. When looking at the list of ingredients water was the first one! This to me means everything, and I love the appearance, smell and the hold. It did not make my hair flaky at all. I have only tried it on my baby hairs, but if it can pass my baby hair test, it just may work for the rest of my hair. I love the way it smells as well, very light texture, and it doesn't feel heavy at all when you apply it to your edges/baby hairs. This gel is high hold, and can do no wrong to me! So far so good!

2) Edge Hicks Gel

Edge Hicks Gel

I have absolutely loved this gel and I’d measure it as is a medium to high hold. Edge Hicks Gel, has a thicker appearance and the color is clear. Roughly price point is $14.00 CAD. It may be cheaper for my American counterparts! I used this gel a lot during my earlier days in my natural hair journey. The only complaint I have is that it did flake on my hair and leave a white residue that was not cute. I limited my use to only my edges after that. Smell is great, and has a high perfume smell.

3) Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera

Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera

If you are looking for a more natural way to lay and slay those edges, try using Aloe Vera gel, plus its gentle and great for your hair. This gel is a light hold and it’s best to use a headscarf to help lay down those baby hairs. It’s all natural and aloe vera gel is great for your hair and scalp. It can double as many other things. I use it to help heal scars, itchy scalp, and it has a cooling sensation which I love for those days where you need something that is multifunctional.

4) Gorilla Snot Gel

Gorilla Snot Gel

This gel is for my type 4 natural hair babies. This gel is extremely thick and somewhat sticky in texture. The gel appearance is yellow but the bottle i’m not really too fond of it. The name alone, kind of is a huge turn off for me. I have used this gel a few times. Believe it or not, I was told to try this gel out via Twitter by simply asking, “What gel should I use for type 4 hair?” I purchased this gel at my local beauty supply store. The price I believe is around $5.00 CAD. I found it to a little hard to work with due to the sticky texture, but if you don’t mind then this is the gel to use. I wish they would change the name of the products to be completely honest.

5) Aunt Jackie’s Flaxseed Tame My Edges

Aunt Jackie’s Flaxseed Tame My Edges

This gel caught my eye because it caters to different hair types. Aunt Jackie’s line and collection display a wide range of products. Based on your hair texture, the selection process is much easier and faster so I am here for it! This line is considered to be natural and has no sulfate, free of paraben, no mineral oil, and no petrolatum.

I am aware of eco styler gel which is not on this list. I know that it is still on many lists and a favorite among many. However, I left it out purposely and you can see why here.

If you want to add to our list, please comment below and share this post. Check back for more natural hair tips and tricks here at 247liveculture!

Disclaimer: Note that these are merely suggestions and all products and ingredients may not be for everyone. Make sure to read all labels carefully and use your discretion, and double checklist for any allergies that you may have.

Christmas Gift Ideas For Natural Hair Girls

The holidays are upon on us again, which means it’s that time to start Christmas shopping! Don’t stress we have some great gift ideas for natural hair women on your list!

Christmas Gift Ideas For Natural Girls

By: Emily-Ann

Do you have a natural hair beauty on your list for this year? The holidays are upon on us again, and you know what that means. It's time to open our wallets, purse, and credit cards and start that Christmas shopping. Don’t stress I have some great gift ideas for natural women on your list.

Natural Hair Care Basket

If you are a DIY kind of person you will love this idea. You can buy a basket, box or decorative box. Collect different items from your local beauty supply store and make a gift basket. You can fill the basket with items that every natural needs if it’s someone who recently joined the natural community-like a welcome package of some sort.

Stocking Stuffers

You can stuff them with products that they love and items you see them using all the time it just takes a little attention to detail. A quick look around their home and a few questions can give you some clues.

T-Shirts

More ideas are cool t-shirts and mugs with famous saying like “Black Girl Magic”, “Black Melanin”, “My black is beautiful” or other slogans. Remind her of how important self-love is.

Black Is Beautiful T-Shirt

Bathroom Accessories

I have seen really cute shower curtains with cartoon characters with afros, shower caps and other things that one may need to protect her mane. They are all over Esty and Instagram. There are so many cool items on Esty as great gift ideas, that I can just shop on there for hours. If I got paid for shopping that would be my next career position.

Natural Woman Bathroom Accessories

Wraps and Slick Scarfs

For that natural who loves wearing wraps and just slaying the game with her wrapping skills, give her the gift of some head bonnets/scarfs/wraps. They come in a variety of patterns and African prints. This is an old tradition that of course our mothers have handed down to us, and has been in our culture for decades. Caring about her edges will always win you points. You can find these items at your local beauty supply store, and other websites that cater to natural hair beauties.

Gift Card

For that natural beauty that has “everything”, my suggestion is simple. Gift card with their favorite beauty supply store or Amazon. It eliminates the guesswork and saves you some time. Plus, if your guy is clueless about what to get you, mention the gift card. You’ll get exactly what you want, and he can relax knowing it did a good job on this Christmas gift exchange. ( Insert Picture)

Just recap great gift ideas for naturals, read them below.

A natural hair care basket

Mugs with black centered slogans or sayings

Slick scarfs

Merchandise and decor like bathroom accessories, phone cases, t-shirts that say, “My black is beautiful”, “Black Melanin”, and “Black Queen”.

6 Natural Hair Rules You Need to Know for the Winter

Have you been wondering what to do with your natural hair for the winter? Here are 6 tips for helping you maintain your natural hair during the winter!

Natural Hair Rules: What To Do With Your Natural Hair In The Winter

By: Emily-Ann

Have you been wondering what to do with your natural hair for the winter? As you know winter is heading our way. For those of us who live in a four-season climate, we are already experiencing colder weather. I know I am actually not looking forward to the colder months. In saying that, I often think about what protective hairstyle to do. First things first, let's get some common practices that you should either implement into your routine.

Keeping your ends tucked away, remember the ends are the oldest part of your hair. Limit the exposure throughout the cooler months. There are many creative and lovely styles to choose from, for example, box- braids, the famous poetic justice braids, and many more! Doing a protective style, be mindful of how tight and for how long you are keeping that style in. Let your hair breathe between styling and keep your scalp well maintained and moisturized.

>> RELATED: Yes, Black Girls Do Have Long Natural Hair

Colder months mean we use heat tools and turn on the heat in our homes. This can be very drying to both our skin and hair. It may be a good idea to use an air defuser in your home to help. They are now making ones that are small enough to fit in your bedroom or living room. Some come with essential oils and give off great scents.

Another tip is double up on your deep conditioning products and steaming your hair. Amazon has some great ones on sale, or you find them at your local beauty supply store. I know I am not the only one who likes to double up on winter items. Get winter accessories with slick lining or have someone put a lining in your hats as it would decrease the chance of a snag or pull on your natural hair.

>> RELATED: Natural Hair Growth Tips: Why Won't My Hair Grow Past A Certain Length?

Just a recap of some of the points made in today’s post

  • Keep your ends protected by tucking the ends in.

  • Moisturize your ends and scalp

  • Deep condition and steam your hair, hooded stationery or portable dry, and plastic cap.

  • Slick lining hats and other winter accessories.

  • Keeping your hair up off your neck to avoid snagging of your ends from clothing like sweaters and scarfs.

  • Protective styles are great so remember to give your hair some breathing room by letting your own hair rest between styles.

Most importantly have fun with your hairstyles and keep in mind that your mane is your crown. What you put in your body is just as important as what you put on it. Comment and leave your suggestions for this winter below!

Natural Hair Tips: How To Safely Blowout Your Natural Hair

“Don’t let the shrinkage fool you!” Here are some tips to safely blowing out your natural hair!

Natural Hair Tips: How To Safely Blowout Your Natural Hair

By: Emily-Ann

Are you wondering how to safely blow out your natural hair? It’s a question that I’ve been asking myself lately. There are methods that can blow out even the tightest curl patterns. My hair is type 4 and thick, but you couldn’t really tell with the shrinkage. Let it be known there is a saying in the natural hair community, “Don’t let the shrinkage fool you.” I am telling you it is very much a real fact.

Recently, I visited a salon to blow out my hair and the stylist looked like she just finished a workout and was sweating by the end of my appointment. She had to switch between multiple attachments before finding the right one. While I was not entirely happy with my results, it got me thinking, maybe there is an easier way. I did a quick search and of course, I went to my favorite website, Youtube. One video, in particular, caught my attention. The title jumped out at me because of healthy hair. Having healthy hair motivates me to keep going on this natural journey.

How to: SAFELY Blow Dry THICK, KINKY NATURAL HAIR | Reduced Manipulation & Breakage!!!

This Youtuber explains that she uses two different methods to blow out her naturally kinky hair. I love watching this naturalista because we have the same hair type. I may have to adjust accordingly in order for my hair to achieve the same results.

This natural beauty mentions two methods using slight tension to help blow dry your hair. You will need your Denman brush for detangling, heat protector, wide tooth comb, and leave-in conditioner. I use a heat protector with Aragorn oil because my hair loves it!

Blowout Your Hair Safely

Tension Method, achieved by pulling the hair straight, and blow drying the roots while applying slight tension. Remember to blow-dry in small sections, to all sections of the hair until fully blown out. You can use the denman brush for the ends to help with the getting your hair cuticle to lay flat.

It is also a good idea to do hair with a cold shot at the end to close your hair cuticles. It’s the same idea as washing your hair. You add heat to open the cuticles and cold to shut them and seal in the moisture or set a style. The same idea applies here.

The second method is using the blow dryer attachment heads. Apply the same method but swapping out the brush for the attachment. Don’t forget your leave-in and heat protector! Let us know how you achieve your blow out results. Leave a comment and share your blow out methods.

Are you thinking about going natural? Are you looking for guidance? There are many reasons why many black women have chosen this path. The beauty of it lies in self-discovery and identity.

A new show on Netflix that follows a woman of color and her path of self-discovery called Nappily Ever After, premiered on September 23, 2018. The main character, which is played by actress Sanaa McCoy Lathan, begins by cutting and shaving off all her hair. She sports a short hairstyle and is a bit self-conscious about the new look, which many of us can relate to. Many of us start with a short hairstyle when we do the big chop. The character slowly builds back her confidence by accepting her new image. With the encouragement of good friends she then learns to live life freely. The character’s layers of identity begin to slowly unravel as she walks in her truth. For many women of color, including myself, our hair is a big part of our identity. Looking in the mirror, it’s the first thing that we see and touch.

Nappily Ever After Starring Sanaa Lathan On Netflix

This show captures one woman's story on starting her natural hair journey! Whether you are transitioning from relaxed to natural or decide to do the “Big Chop”, I believe this show displays a very real reality that speaks the truth about being a black woman. The emotions that come with being natural and realizing what kind of woman you want to be.

The beginner's guide to being natural isn’t a straight line, but you can find great tips and tricks from bloggers and Youtube including sites like this one. Now I know you are curious about how to get started so here are some guidelines. I am certain you don’t want to have your own screaming moment in the mirror like our character in Nappily Ever After.

Guide To Living With Natural Hair

Guide To Living With Natural Hair

  1. It will take time getting used to your new look. Freaking out is normal, and your reservations about whether it was the right decision is also normal. I promise you, in the end, you will learn to love your beautiful naturally curly hair and texture.

  2. Write out your hair goals, what is important to you. Create a hair Journal where you can express your thoughts on paper.

  3. Start mapping out how and when you will do your big chop or transition. Mark it on your calendar and map your whole month.

  4. You will encounter friends, family and even coworkers who will have their opinion on your new look. Not everyone will like it. Remember why you are doing this and ultimately it’s your hair on your head.

  5. Confidence will come with growth. Especially, if you have always had long hair. I always like to remind myself, “Its hair, it will grow back it just takes time.”

  6. Purchase the products that are appropriate for your stage in your journey. Read the labels and don’t just buy blindly. Each product tells you what it designs to do for your hair. Find the one that works for you.

  7. Find a natural with the same hair type as yours. What works for them may work for you as well. Take notes and adjust as needed or until you get desired results.

  8. Your hair will let you know what it needs. Believe me when I say it has a voice of its own. Don’t be afraid to switch products during new seasons, it's actually recommended.

Natural Hair Growth Tips

By: Emily-Ann

Are you wondering why your hair won’t grow past a certain length? Well let’s take a look at your hair care regimen. Below, I have provided with a checklist for natural hair growth tips. Now It’s completely understandable if you miss a few of these, get a little lazy or have not yet done one of any of these steps. Although these tips can aid in your natural hair growth, consistency is key and DNA can also play a role in your hair growth, texture and curl pattern!

Natural Hair Growth Tips

Natural Hair Growth Tips

  • Spraying your hair with water is one of the most important practices! Add to your spray bottle to enhance hair growth benefits for example: Rose Water, Aloe Vera Juice, Peppermint essential oil, and Rosemary essential oil

  • Deep Condition for 30-45 minutes after your shampoo. Sitting under a hooded dryer or plastic cap will do just fine.

  • Pre Poo, although not necessary, but if it works for you then continue. It can help with SSK (Single strand knots) and the detangling process.

  • Hot oil treatments, should be done throughout the year. Especially during the winter when the environment changes frequently.

  • Trims - pay attention to your hair because it will let you know when it’s time for a trim. Do you get split ends when you do a two strand twist ? Or that curl doesn't quite curl and the end? It might be a good idea to get a trim. You can either have professional do the trim or you can do the trim yourself. It’s up to you and your comfort level.

  • Massaging the scalp - This can encourage blood circulation and promote healthy hair regrowth and natural hair growth.

  • Drinking a lot of water is very important and it should be the first thing that you put in your body and the last thing at night before bed.

  • Taking multivitamins, weather it be in pill form or liquid form. Consult your family physician before taking any multivitamin. It’s good idea to find the right method and discuss any changes with your healthcare provider.

  • Diet - just like the saying goes, “ Garbage in, garbage out.” Make sure you are balancing your habits out with some leafy greens and exercise.

  • Detangle your hair - Use the finger method or if you find that that just won’t do the trick, try using conditioner like Aussie Moist line which provides great slip and use a wide tooth comb to help with the detangling method. Never detangle or manipulate on dry hair. This will cause breakage and split ends!!!!!

  • Hair growth oils - Add oils that aid in hair growth like Olive Oil, Jamaican Black Caster Oil, Jojoba Oil, Peppermint Oil, Rosemary Oil

Natural Hair Regrowth
  • Cleansing Shampoo - Please do your scalp a favor and make it happy! A happy scalp will give you healthy hair growth and retention. Find a light moisturizing shampoo that will not strip all of the oils from your hair. I am currently using Texture ID cleansing shampoo.

  • Good protective practices for bedtime - Tying up your hair or wrapping it in a slick scarf or bonnet, and or pillow case.

Hope this helps those of you who are looking for guidance. If we missed anything or you would like to add to this list, comment below and let us know! Don’t forget to check out all our other posts on hair care!

Cute Natural Hairstyle Ideas for Short Hair

By: Emily-Ann

Embrace Your Natural Short Hair

Having long natural hair is beautiful, but short natural hairstyles are just as gorgeous. Love your curls at any stage! If you are like me and you have always had long hair, going natural or doing the big chop can be daunting and scary. You’ve never seen your hair, never mind having short natural hair. The texture is different, and you have mixed emotions about your new look. Don’t get discouraged short hair is very versatile and you may come to love it and stick with it!

Don't stress over your short curls but love them anyway! Shrinkage is apart of the natural hair deal and depending on your hair texture you may experience more shrinkage than others. Ladies, play with color and go ahead and try different styles. For example, Mohawks/Faux Mohawks are fun and one of my personal favorites! Bantu knots are also something to try out and you can  dress them up with hair jewelry.

Experiment with your short do’s, and try playing with head scarfs and wraps. There are many colors and patterns to choose from, and big hooped earrings will never go out of style. Opt for protective styles like braids and wigs. Caution, although wearing a protective style can be beneficial, remember to take care of your own hair. Protective styles should not feel too tight or feel like you got a major headache sis.

Keep your curls healthy and happy by making sure you keep your hair hydrated. For example, using light oils like Argan oil, Almond oil, or Jojoba oil can be good for your natural hair. These oils easily penetrate into the hair shafts and if your hair can handle the heavier oils like, Coconut oil, Black Jamaican Castor oil, or Olive oil, go ahead and try out some of those. Using shampoo to unclog pores and product residue off your scalp can help aid in natural hair growth!

>> RELATED: Natural Hair Growth: Do You Want Long Natural Hair?

Want that extra length? Ponytails extensions are making a come back. You can get them at your local beauty supply stores. They are inexpensive and are quick and easy to install. Protective styles, are great to retain length, and help you change up your look. I encourage you to change the positioning of the ponytail. Removing your protective units or extensions and letting your own hair breathe is extremely important! This can help avoid breakage and tension on your edges. This also applies to headbands because wearing headbands constantly can cause rubbing and pulling against the scalp and edges. I have had my own breakage and alopecia episodes.

Let your hair breathe and rest once in a while between styling. Below are some cute natural hairstyle ideas for short hair and accessories to play with. Hope this helps, and let us know what styles you are thinking of doing! Share this post with fellow naturals who needs a little inspiration for their short hair do’s!
