US Sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson brought home the trophy dramatically Monday at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. She barely edged ahead to capture the victory in an entertaining women’s 100 meters final. Richardson, who started in the less-than-desirable lane 9, won the gold setting a personal best while simultaneously setting a championship record with 10.65 seconds. That's only .16 seconds behind the world record set by the late great Florence Griffith Joyner. Richardson is currently tied for the title of fifth-fastest woman over 100 meters in history.

The American and Jamaican rivalry was alive and well in the women’s 100 as Jamaican sprinters finished second and third. Olympic bronze medalist Shericka Jackson earned the silver medal in 10.72 seconds. Two-time Olympic gold medalist and the 2022 100-meter champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce claimed the bronze in 10.77 seconds.

I feel amazing. I feel like hard work pays off. I’ve been dedicating myself. I’ve been keeping my faith strong this season and just believing and knowing whatever you practice is what you put forward, and I’m grateful.
— Sha'Carri Richardson

The 23-year-old has been on pace to become one of the biggest stars on the track but was hit with a one-month suspension in 2021 after testing positive for marijuana. She later expressed that her actions were a result of her mourning her mother. Despite the negativity and push back Sha’carri remained dedicated to her craft and is now a world champion. Richardson shared that running in the outside lane on Monday was symbolic of her determination and focus.

I was by myself in my own world, which honestly has been like that all my life. I’ve always been in my own world, my own element, so being in lane 9 was perfect for me to do what it is I know to do and to focus more on myself. And when I celebrated it was because I felt like I did my best no matter what the result was going to be. I felt like I did my best.
— Sha'carri Richardson

The World Athletics Championship was her first global event since the Olympics. The 2023 champion is also slated to compete in the 200 meters which will be contested Wednesday through Friday. Sha’Carri has performed extremely well this season, posting a then-world-best time of 10.71 in the 100 meters at the US Championships. The LSU standout is also one of six women in the pool for the 4x100-meter relay team. Richardson continues to break records and boundaries as she is now the first American 100-meter world champion in six years.

Many fans have been wondering where the outspoken NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe would land after his less than harmonious exit from FX1’s Undisputed alongside Skip Bayless. Sharpe decided to end his partnership with Bayless in June after the NBA Finals. Now per reports, the sports personality will sit across the debate desk against Stephen A. Smith twice a week on the hit sports debate show ‘First Take.’

This is honestly a full circle moment for Sharpe, as it was his guest appearances on the show with Bayless back when it aired on ESPN2 that a partnership between the two would be fruitful.

Smith has publicly expressed his interest in the two partnering up but mentioned Shannon has yet to sign on the dotted line..

He also stated that the two would be a great pairing because of his debate skills saying that it would make them both better.

Iron sharpens iron, we elevate one another. When it comes to television, when it comes to being in front of a microphone or a camera, I’m not taking a back step to any-damn-body.
— Stephen A. Smith

Sharpe’s official debut on the show is still unknown but he is expected to be on the show on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the football season. If that coincides with the NFL regular season, it could see him make an appearance on Sept. 11th.

Sharpe is also expected to soon find a home for his podcast ‘Club Shay Shay’

Michael Oher Challenges False Adoption Story from 'The Blind Side'

Michael Oher's 14-page petition alleges that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy earned over $300 million from the Oscar Award-winning movie, while he received nothing for a story that depended on him. We discuss it here!

Michael Oher, the NFL star whose purported adoption by an prosperous white Memphis family became the basis for the 2009 film ‘The Blind Side,’ has alleged that the narrative was fabricated. As per a petition submitted in the Shelby County Probate Court on August 14th, Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, who welcomed Oher into their home during his high school years, allegedly never legally adopted him. Oher claims they deceived him into signing a document that granted them conservatorship, providing them legal control over his business transactions.

The 14-page document, acquired by ESPN, outlined that the Tuohy family leveraged their conservatorship authority to secure a deal resulting in over $300 million for themselves and their biological children from the highly successful Oscar-winning movie. In contrast, Oher, the individual at the core of the narrative, received no compensation for a story "that hinged on his existence." The petition further revealed that even years after the movie's release, the Tuohys continued to refer to the now 37-year-old Oher as their adopted son, utilizing this status to advance their ventures, including Leigh Anne's roles as an author and motivational speaker.

“The lie of Michael’s adoption is one upon which co-conservators Leigh Anne Tuohy and Sean Tuohy have enriched themselves at the expense of their Ward, the undersigned Michael Oher,” the contents of the court document state. “Michael Oher discovered this lie to his chagrin and embarrassment in February of 2023, when he learned that the conservatorship to which he consented on the basis that doing so would make him a member of the Tuohy family, in fact provided him no familial relationship with the Tuohys.”

Adapted from Michael Lewis' 2006 book of the identical title, ‘The Blind Side’ movie recounts the journey of a homeless African American teenager who defied his disadvantaged background to achieve NFL success, aided by his adoptive parents. The film features performances by Sandra Bullock in the role of Leigh Anne, Tim McGraw as Sean, and Quinton Aaron portraying Oher. This sports drama achieved remarkable acclaim, amassing $309 million in box office revenue against a $29 million budget.

For its reintroduction, we're getting a crisp all-white version of the silhouette. Officially nicknamed "Halo," the colorway was created by his wife as a way to honor Kobe's birthday each year. The shoe will be available through Nike SNKRS and select retailers online and in-store. The retail price for adults will be available ($180), big kids ($120), and little kids ($90).

I am so proud that my husband’s shoes are still the most worn by players on NBA courts and that the demand for his shoes remain so desired by his fans around the world.
— Vanessa Bryant

In addition to the sneaker release, Nike will hold a two-day youth basketball tournament at LA's Crypto.com Arena beginning on Aug. 23 culminating on Mamba Day, Aug. 24.

Derek Fisher Makes Coaching Comeback with Encino Crespi High School

Derek Fisher, former NBA star, returns to coaching at Encino Crespi High School after successful playing career and coaching stints with Knicks and L.A. Sparks. We discuss it here!

By: Joshua Martin

Derek Fisher, a key member of the early 2000’s Los Angeles Lakers dynasty, has made a return to the sidelines after a brief hiatus from the coaching profession. The starting point guard for one of the greatest NBA dynasties of all time, has returned but not to the rigorous task of leading old and grizzly vets through an 82 game season. This time he instead finds himself on the amateur level leading Encino Crespi High School’s boys basketball team as their new head coach.

Similar to current Lakers star Austin Reaves, Fisher made a name for himself in his native Arkansas where he laced up his sneakers for Little Rock University. Fisher played all 4 seasons there and was also named the Sun Belt Conference’s Player of the Year in 1996 as a senior.

Fisher was later selected in the first round of the star studded 1996 NBA Draft, where Laker Legend Kobe Bryant was also drafted. The two immediately formed a partnership that would soon bear fruit in terms of championships.

Though primarily a reserve player during his early years with the Shaq/Laker dynasty, D Fish consistently started for the Lakers during the post Shaq era, briefly making stops in Golden State and Utah. His second stint with the squad was just as successful. The Lakers with Fisher as their starting point guard made 3 consecutive Finals, winning two.

After a brief “ring chasing” phase with Western Conference contenders, The 18 year NBA veteran quickly transitioned to a coaching career with both the Knicks and L.A. Sparks. Fisher coached the Knicks during the 2014-15 season and part of the 2015-16 campaign before he was fired in February 2016. He went 40-96 during his time as coach in New York. He led the Sparks from 2019 through the early part of the 2022 season.

Coaching and teaching is a true passion and I look forward to continuing this focus on the next generation of young student-athletes. Go Crespi!!
— Derek Fisher

Fisher spent last year coaching an 8th-grade boys team and a Team Derek Fisher Club girls team.

After an extensive search to identify Skip Bayless's new co-host for the popular sports debate show 'Undisputed,' FS1's flagship sports program might have ultimately secured their candidate in Richard Sherman.

According to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, the former Stanford star and five time All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman is bringing his outspoken personality back to television for his second gig post retirement.

The former leader of ‘the Legion of Boom’ will sit across from Skip and go toe to toe with one of the more controversial figures in sports media. He will appear on the show fifty to 100 times per year mostly during the football season, which still falls short of the 260 weekdays on the annual calendar. Shannon Sharpe reportedly left the show because of tensions between him and Bayless.

Sherman and Bayless did have an on-air dustup back on Bayless's old show ‘First Take’ nearly ten years ago. The Seattle Seahawks superstar at one point told Bayless he had never accomplished anything. Bayless retorted that he had done more in the media than Sherman had in football.

Now, Sherman and Bayless will be going at it on FS1.

The first domino to fall in the relaunch of Undisputed was announced last week when Bayless reported on his podcast that New Orleans rap legend Lil Wayne will have a weekly 12-15 minute segment on the show each Friday. He is also expected to begin as host when the show returns August 28th.

It seems as if Undisputed will now mirror First Take, with Bayless playing the Stephen A. Smith role, and with multiple co-hosts taking turns sparring with the star. Whatever the outcome, sports fans will be tuning in.

Simone Biles made a triumphant return to competitive gymnastics at the U.S. Classic, also known as the Core Hydration Classic in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, marking her first competition since the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, where she took a bronze medal in the beam event before withdrawing from the Team All-Around due to the "Twisties." After the tournament, Biles announced an extended hiatus from competition.

"After everything that transpired in Tokyo, the amount of outpouring of love and support that I had on Twitter, on Instagram and in the arena was just really shocking and surprising to me that they still have so much belief in me," Biles stated. "They still love me, and it just makes my heart warm. Especially in a time like this where I was really nervous to compete again."

On the August 4 training day, Biles opted not to engage with the media, but she greeted fans warmly, displaying a positive demeanor while joking with her teammates. The US Classic acts as the decisive qualifier for the upcoming US Gymnastics Championships in San Jose, later this month. Biles' long-term aspiration appears to be rejoining the US Olympic Team, aiming for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France, scheduled to occur less than a year from today. Despite her two-year absence from the sport, Biles showcased her dominance in the competition without delay.

Biles emerged from the event with an impressive haul of four medals – three gold and one bronze. Throughout the proceedings on August 5, she demonstrated that her time away from the sport had minimal impact on her skills, securing the All-Around gold by a amazing 5-point margin, a significant achievement in a sport where small differences matter. She also claimed gold medals in the beam and floor events and earned a bronze in the uneven bars. Looking ahead, Biles will focus on the upcoming US Championships, taking place later this month. Biles is likely to participate in the World Championships in Belgium at the end of September.

"I think the night went really well," following the meet, Biles expressed her thoughts. "Everything has fallen into place. I feel really good about where I am right now, mentally and physically. There are some things to work on in my routines, but for the first meet back, I would say it went pretty well. I'm very shocked and surprised."

Recap of the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford Fight

Terence Crawford dominates Errol Spence Jr. in a historic fight, becoming the first male fighter to achieve undisputed status in two weight divisions in the modern four-belt era. We discuss it here!

By: Joshua Martin

Terence Crawford dominated Errol Spence Jr. Saturday Night in Las Vegas and that may be an understatement.

I must admit like most boxing fans of this generation, I only come around when big names are attached or when the stakes are at its absolute highest. However the build up for this matchup has been bubbling over for quite some time and now the question who is the best 147 -pound fighter of this era can be officially put to rest.

After a slow first round for both fighters, the former undisputed junior welterweight champion eventually began to take over the fight with a flurry of jabs. The first knock down came off a counter jab followed by a left straight in the second round. Spence was able to beat the count and continued to push along but Crawford was a man on a mission. Simply put, “Bud” was too fast, too technical and too powerful all night long. There was no question who was in control at this point.

Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford

During the World Welterweight Championship bout at T-Mobile Arena on July 29, 2023, Terence Crawford delivered a powerful punch to Errol Spence Jr. in round 2, held in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Al Bello/Getty Images)

It seemed as if whenever Spence would gain any momentum, Crawford would send out a jab that routinely stopped Spence dead in his tracks. As the fight continued, Spence looked lost as Crawford landed his jab and straight left hands with surgical precision.

Spence would hit the canvas two more times in the seventh but continued to try to find a way to change momentum but to no avail. Crawford’s deadly attack had Spence reeling and by the ninth round, the referee had no choice but to call the fight at 2:32 left in the round.

With the victory, Crawford unified the WBA, WBC and IBF titles with his WBO title and also became the first male fighter ever to achieve undisputed status in two weight divisions in the modern four-belt era.

“It means everything because of who I took the belts from. They talked bad about me. They said I wasn't good enough and I couldn't beat these welterweights. I just kept my head to the sky and kept praying to God that I would get the opportunity to show the world how great Terence Crawford is. Tonight, I believe I showed how great I am.” - Crawford

I honestly don't think we need another fight but when asked afterwards if he would be up for a rematch a motivated Spence Jr. responded, “Hell yeah we gotta do it again.”

The winner usually dictates whether or not that's a possibility but after what the world witnessed Terence better take this time to gather his thoughts. I'm not sure he wants those problems again. Crawford’s performance was special because of how dismantled his superstar opponent from start to finish and not some low level novice. He arguably saved the best performance of his career for a future hall of famer. We have to give credit where credit is due, that was a performance for the ages.

Flau’jae Johnson is making a significant impact on the youth in her hometown of Savannah, Georgia. As part of her champion "Homecoming Weekend" celebration, the rising basketball star donated $10,000 to her former hangout spot, the Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club, on Friday July 28th.

The local hero came back to her hometown to inspire and motivate the younger generation to pursue their dreams fearlessly. “This is something I always wanted to do. I always want to give back to the community, and I am so glad this worked out. I am super excited to be back here with the kids,” Johnson stated, according to WTOC-TV's report. The Frank Callen Club was where Johnson started honing her court skills.

During her visit, Johnson reminisced about her time playing on the boys' basketball team and highlighted the importance of her visit. “I hope they realize that they can do it, too. I come from the same place. I was here just 10 years ago. I want them to know that they can do it, too, and when they do, do it to give back to someone else,” she stated.

As a freshman on the LSU Tigers basketball team, the 19-year-old played a crucial role in leading her team to a 2023 NCAA championship victory, along with teammate Angel Reese, both capitalizing on NIL deals as roster stars. Flau'jae, who is also a rapper, expressed on Twitter how rewarding it is to give back. “I grew up in here, played on my first basketball team here. This place molded me to become the person I am today. Forever grateful. This is only the start,” in a separate tweet, she further expressed her thoughts.

Johnson is currently featured in the second season of ‘Fenom,’ a docuseries that chronicles the rise of female athletes, and she hosted a special screening on Friday night. Other weekend events include a meet and greet with an autograph signing and a back-to-school drive to support the community before the upcoming school year. For more details, check here.

TMZ Sports reported on July 25th that the 18-year-old athlete experienced a medical emergency during a workout at the University of Southern California on the previous day, July 24th. “Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital. Jaylen Brown had a breakout season with the Boston Celtics earning him the richest contract in NBA History

By: Omar Cook

Jaylen Brown, star forward of the Boston Celtics, is set to make NBA history with a massive contract. His agent, Jason Glushon, confirmed that Brown has agreed to sign a five-year, supermax extension worth a staggering $304 million, making it the richest deal ever in NBA history. This lucrative extension became possible for Brown after he earned All-NBA Second Team honors for the 2022-23 season.

The jaw-dropping extension will take effect in the 2024-25 season, where Brown will earn an unprecedented $52.4 million, setting a new record for the highest single-season salary for any NBA player. In the final year of the contract, Brown's earnings will reach an astonishing $69.1 million.

This remarkable deal surpasses the previous record holder, Nikola Jokic, who secured a $276 million extension in 2022. Notably, Brown's contract also includes a guaranteed trade kicker, although he had to forgo the typical player option that stars usually have in their final year under contract to receive this exceptional compensation.

Throughout the early months of the summer, it wasn't always certain that Jaylen Brown's new contract with the Boston Celtics would come to fruition. However, the new deal has now been confirmed, keeping the forward in Celtic green until the 2028-29 season.

Brown recently had the best season of his career, boasting impressive averages of 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. His outstanding performance earned him an All-Star selection and a spot in the All-NBA Second Team.

Despite his performance, Celtics fans questioned Brown’s ability to fit in with star All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum. The Celtics failed to make a return to the NBA Finals this past season causing fans and analysts to actively pushing for a trade involving Jaylen Brown. However, historical data suggests that the Brown-Tatum duo is arguably one of the most formidable one-two punches in the NBA currently.

During the previous season, the duo combined for an impressive 56.7 points per game, ranking as the fourth-highest scoring duo since the 1976-77 merger, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Earlier today July 12th, Kyrie Irving made an announcement on his Instagram Stories, revealing a new collaboration with Chinese sportswear company ANTA. Renowned journalist Shams Charania reported that the shoe endorsement agreement with the global brand will extend for five years and encompasses the special role of chief creative officer. The terms of the deal were reportedly negotiated through Irving's management entity A11Even.

In December 2022, Nike ended its partnership with Irving after he faced allegations of antisemitism due to sharing a controversial book on social media. This incident caused a rift between Irving and the Brooklyn Nets, ultimately resulting in his transfer to the Dallas Mavericks in February. Since then, Irving has issued an apology to the Jewish community for his actions. “To all Jewish families and communities that are hurt and affected from my post, I am deeply sorry to have caused you pain, and I apologize,” In his Instagram statement, he expressed at that moment. “I initially reacted out of emotion to being unjustly labeled antisemitic, instead of focusing on the healing process of my Jewish brothers and sisters that were hurt from the hateful remarks made in the documentary.”

The announcement coincides with Irving's recent contract extension with the Mavericks, a confirmed three-year deal worth $126 million according to the NBA. In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, team owner Mark Cuban elaborated on the organization's rationale behind retaining the NBA champion.

“I think Kyrie’s just misunderstood, you know,” Cuban said. “Everybody sees all the noise and everything around him, but when you actually talk to him, I like him. You know, he’s just, he’s open, he’s smart. You know, he’s always looking to learn things and to me, you know, he’s an interesting guy that’s just misunderstood… Kidd and I made the effort to really get to know him.”

Say what you want about Kyrie Irving, but he is making major moves in his career, securing a $126 million, three-year contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks and a groundbreaking five-year shoe endorsement deal with ANTA. Which he negotiated the deals himself and now holds a position of creative control within the company, allowing him to recruit future athletes to the brand. Irving's accomplishments highlight his expertise in both basketball and the business world.

On Thursday July 6th at Hayward Field in Eugene Oregon, American sprinter and former LSU standout Sha’Carri Richardson continued her blistering pace at the 2023 USA Track and Field Championships, with her world leading time 10.71 in the 100 meter prelims. Richardson, who is aiming for her first appearance in the World Championships, clocked her personal best time to win the first of four heats, making a huge statement in the process.

Richardson most notably won the women’s 100 meter sprint in the U.S. Olympic trials in 2021, but was suspended for one month by the for testing positive for marijuana that unfortunately left her ineligible to compete during the Tokyo games. Last year was a low point for Richardson with Inconsistent times and results. Placing 5th in her opening heat and not advancing to the finals for a chance at the Worlds team. Coming into 2023 the most recognizable face in the sport has been on a tear and certainly earned the right to represent our country on the world stage.

Richardson has routinely clocked under 11 seconds this season and earlier this year at the Miranmar Invitational in Florida, the 23 year old ran the fourth fastest time in women’s 100 meters history with a 10.57 that was ruled ineligible for record purposes because of a 4.1 m/s following wind. She also ran a 10.76 time at the Doha Diamond League in Qatar, which is now the third fastest time in the world this season. Sprinters Brittany Brown and Tamara Clark finished second and third respectively with Brown also securing a personal best 10.96 time.

The semi-finals and finals in the women’s 100m are set for Friday (June 7th) evening.

FYI

The U.S. championships serve as the U.S. trials for the upcoming World Championships. Richardson came into the U.S championships as the top qualifier in the women’s 100. This years outdoor championships will conclude on July 9th.

The Next Generation of NBA Stars Find New Homes

Exciting NBA draft with major trades and standout prospects, including Victor Wembanyama as the top pick, sets the stage for team improvements and sparks intrigue for the coming season. We discuss it here!

This may be the most entertaining draft we've had in some time. Trades galore leading up to draft night already had organizations putting together plans to improve their teams now and for the future. Marcus Smart now plays for the Grizzlies, CP3 is now a Warrior, Jordan Poole was shipped off to the Wizards and Kristaps Porzingis is officially a Boston Celtic. That’s a lot of moves. Despite the moving of well established, big name players, the NBA Draft is all about the young guys and this year there was a clear no-brainer for the number 1 pick.

Victor Wembanyama is a once in a lifetime prospect and was the clear favorite to go to the Spurs at 1. Wemby is a freak of nature, standing at 7’5” with a 8 foot wingspan he is the most highly touted incoming player since Lebron James. He may not turn the Spurs into a playoff team in his first year but he couldn't have found himself in a more perfect situation. In San Antonio, he will play and learn from one the greatest coaches of all time in Greg Poppavich and he will get plenty of opportunities to showcase his skills on a squad that's in desperate need of a talent influx, thus the number 1 pick. As a player comp, I can see him evolving into a more durable Porzingis with a lot more ball skills and shot creation. He also has the potential to become a defensive force, If he can add bulk to an otherwise wiry frame, the Spurs may be adding more championship banners to the 5 they already have.

Wemby may have dominated the pre draft headlines but this draft was about more than one prospect. To round out the top five, the Charlotte Hornets selected versatile forward Brandon Miller at 2, the uber athletic point guard Scoot Henderson went to the Portland Trail Blazers at 3, the Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons selected two twin brothers, Amen and Ausar Thompson, with the 4th and 5th picks respectively. Despite not being known for putting the ball in the basket, both brothers are long and rangy. The game has changed so much that non shooting perimeter players really don't have a place in the modern NBA but both have the propensity to transform into legit defensive stoppers.

Biggest Winners

Mavericks

The Mavericks started off a successful draft night by moving the horrendous Davis Bertans contract, drafting Duke center Dereck Lively II at 12 overall and acquiring former Sacramento Kings big man Richaun Holmes. The Mavs are winners because they were able to gain a little bit of cap flexibility and address some of their defensive woes with the selection of LIvely II, a mobile big man with size and the potential to become a defensive player of the year winner.

Washington Wizards

Gone are Bradley Beal, Kristaps Porzingis. In are former NBA champion Jordan Poole, Tyus Jones, a bunch of mid level veterans and a slew of draft picks. The Wizards selected forward Bilal Coulibaly with the 7th overall pick, a defensive stopper with obvious holes in his offensive repertoire. Many may look at this as a reach but the Wizards are allowed to take a few risks, especially since they have fully embraced a rebuild that was long overdue.

Biggest Losers

It's hard to label teams as losers on a night filled with so much hope and promise. However there are two squads that left their fan bases with more questions than answers.

The OKC Thunder had a whooping 17 1st round picks over the next 3 years heading into last night's draft. Despite a solid pick at 10 with guard Cason Wallace. Oklahoma City fans have to wonder if they are facing a forever rebuild. Shai is an ALL NBA type of talent and most teams will try to find veteran stars to maximize the talent of the younger players. Not the Thunder who seem to be adamant at stockpiling assets without actually cashing them in. Acquiring high valued prospects is never a bad thing but eventually OKC needs to make a move that will put them in serious playoff contention before they miss their window to improve in a always competitive Western conference.

The Portland Trail Blazers took the best available prospect at 3 with their selection of Scoot Henderson but Dame Lillard has explicitly announced he doesn't plan on waiting on younger players to develop. He wants to win now and not any of the moves the organization has made this offseason has made that dream a reality.

I don’t have much of an appetite for bringing in guys two and three years away from really going after it.
— Damian Lillard

Calling the Trail Blazers losers may be a little misguided but one cant help but wonder, “What are they going to do?” With rumors swirling, the Blazers could have appeased both Dame and Blazers fans with a draft day trade. I mean it's not like they didn't have the assets. The Blazers are at a crossroads and will be quite interesting to see how it all unfolds in the coming months.

All in all, The Victor Wembenya era starts now. Good luck rookies, we will be watching!!

LeBron James is widely recognized as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. But his impact extends far beyond the basketball court. In recent years, LeBron has made significant efforts to address social issues and uplift his community. June 8th marked a significant milestone for LeBron James and his family foundation, along with community partners, as they celebrated the inauguration of the I PROMISE Housing development. This long awaited project serves as a complementary venture to the renowned I PROMISE school in Akron, embodying their collective commitment to empowering the community. A symbolic ribbon cutting ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter in their mission to uplift and support the residents of Akron.

Recognizing the housing crisis and economic disparities in various neighborhoods, LeBron decided to leverage his influence and resources to make a positive change. His housing project focuses on providing affordable and safe housing options for families who face financial hardships.

At the symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony, which marked the beginning of a new chapter in their mission to uplift and support the residents of Akron, the presence of James' mother, Gloria James, alongside community leaders, signifies the realization of their shared vision. The collaboration between the East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation (EANDC) and the LeBron James Family Foundation has brought to life a remarkable $16 million development. This visionary project stands as a testament to their relentless dedication to the improvement of the community and the creation of a brighter future for its residents.

Within the captivating modern-day structure lies a collection of 50 well-made residential units. Offering a range of two, three, and four-bedroom layouts, this modern building stands as a testament to thoughtful design and functionality. Tenants fortunate enough to call this place home are granted access to a lineup of amenities, including community and fitness rooms, secure bicycle storage, specialized units catering to mobility and sensory needs, and the convenience of fiber optic Wi-Fi available in all apartments.

The collaboration between the LeBron James Family Foundation and EANDC extends beyond the physical housing development. Together, they are dedicated to offering comprehensive support to tenants through a range of services. This includes access to job and family services, medical and mental healthcare provisions, educational and career advancement training, as well as financial literacy programs. With a shared vision for the future, the ultimate aspiration is to empower these tenants to transition from renting to homeownership, fostering long-term stability and self-sufficiency.

Continue to strive for greatness LBJ!

NBA Finals Preview: Heat vs Nuggets

Get ready for an in-depth NBA Finals preview of the highly anticipated matchup between the Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets. We discuss it here!

MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA - MARCH 31, 2023: Jimmy Butler, an American professional basketball player for the Miami Heat, attend the semifinal match at 2023 Miami Open at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami

We may not have arrived to the Finals matchup we expected but it's definitely the one we deserved. The two best players in this year’s playoffs lead two squads who are polar opposites in almost every spectrum.

You have Jimmy Butler who, with the combined forces of excellent coaching by Coach Eric Spoelstra and timely shot making from undrafted vets, helped propel a squad without its second leading scorer back to the championship round for the second time in 4 years. It's truly a David vs. Goliath scenario. So has been the journey for the Heat the entire way it seems. Starting in the play-in tournament, eventually becoming an 8th seed. No one had the Heat in this position.

Then there’s Nikola Jokic, two time MVP, undisputed leader of the best team in the western conference all year long, leading a squad that's incredibly deep, consistently brilliant offensively and poised to lift the Larry O’Brien trophy for the first time in its franchise’s history. Jamal Murray and Jokic have been historically good this postseason and the Nuggets are finally healthy at the right time.

The Journey

The Nuggets haven’t been tested much this postseason if we're being honest. Jokic dominated a brittle Lakers team with a flurry of triple doubles, sweeping them in the Western Finals. Murray turned back the hands of time and gave us a taste of what we saw from him in the bubble against the Suns, lifting them to a 4-2 series victory. The Timberwolves stole a game but it’s called a “gentleman's sweep”, emphasis on the word sweep, for a reason.

The Heat on the other hand lost its first game of the play-in tournament but bounced back to secure an unfavorable first round matchup against. Unfavorable until Giannis sustained a back injury. The Heat handled the Bucks in 4-1 series thumping. Kept that same energy against the Knicks, reaching 4 wins in 6 games. Though pushed to a game 7, the Heat's supporting cast stepped up again led by Caleb Martin's deadly stroke from deep, becoming the first 8th seed since 1999 to reach the NBA Finals.

Heat X factor - Caleb Martin - averaged 19.3 points per game in the east finals, along with shooting 60 percent from the floor and 49% from three.

X-Factors

Stars like Jokic, Butler and Jamal Murray will definitely have their say so on how this series will unfold but like most cases, the championship series is usually won between the margins, X-factors making timely shots and crucial decisions made by coaches in pivotal situations.

For the Heat, their fairing in this matchup hinges largely, in my opinion, on the health of Tyler Herro. After averaging 20.1 ppg for the Heat during the regular season, Herro has played only 19 minutes this postseason after suffering a broken hand in game 1 of the Bucks series. Herro isn't known for his defensive prowess but he is a capable scorer. For the Heat to have a legitimate chance in this series, they need all the firepower they can get to keep pace with the Nuggets. Shortly after Game 7, Senior NBA analyst for TNT, Chris Haynes, reported that Tyler is on course to return very soon.

The Nuggets have a number of players to pinpoint in this section. Bruce Brown, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Aaron Gordon. All are solid choices but the former number 2 overall pick in the 2018 draft may be the key to securing a title. Over the past few seasons, MPJ has thoroughly bought into being a role player but there are still plenty of moments when his pedigree shines through. Standing at 6’10”, once Porter Jr. gets going it's easy to see where the Klay Thompson comparisons come from. At his size, he will be able to simply shoot over or dribble past many of Miami’s defenders. If MPJ is involved and hitting his shots, he could be a nightmare matchup for the Heat.

Final Verdict

I've been totally wrong this entire playoffs. I initially thought the Bucks would represent the East with the Suns coming out of the West in a possible 2021 finals rematch. Both teams eventually fell by the wayside after sustaining crucial injuries and facing scorching hot teams who couldn’t miss from the field. But this is about the present, the here and now. And honestly, I believe the Heat will win. I know the Nuggets have a better deeper team, so did the Celtics. I know the Nuggets have a dominant MVP big man, so did the Bucks. The Nuggets faithful don't tend to reach the heights of some of your more delusional Knicks fans but I'm pretty sure Ball Arena will be in a raucous frenzy. With all that being said, this year’s playoffs have shown me that my gut is no longer reliable. Whatever I know, I truly don’t.

Heat in 6.

Carmelo Anthony Announces Retirement from the NBA

Carmelo Anthony announces retirement from NBA, reflecting on his legendary career and leaving a lasting legacy. We discuss it here!

Carmelo Anthony (credit: Andreas Branch)

By: Joshua Martin

Ten-time all star Carmelo Anthony has officially announced his retirement from the NBA via an emotional video recap of his career where the caption simply read “Thank you #STAYME7O” During the video Melo mentioned that his on the court legacy pales in comparison to the love he has for his son, the game of basketball and the fans who supported him throughout his career.

People ask what I believe my legacy is,” Anthony said. “It’s not my feats on the court that come to mind, all the awards or praise. Because my story has always been more than basketball. My legacy, my son … I will forever continue through you. The time has come for you to carry this torch.” - Carmelo via video address

The 38-year-old last played during the 2021-22 season where he was impressive coming off the bench for the Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 13.3 points and 4.2 rebounds in 69 games.

During his prime, Carmelo was arguably one of the greatest scorers of his era. Earning him numerous all star selections, in addition to a scoring title in 2013 with the Knicks.

Carmelo played seven seasons in New York, he also spent time in Denver where he was selected number 3 overall by the Nuggets in one of the more memorable draft classes of all time, that saw Lebron James go number 1, Hall of Famer Chris Bosh at 4 and future hall of famer Dwayne Wade at 5.

The 75th Anniversary team member made stops in Houston, Portland and Oklahoma City as well, en route to a Top Ten finish in total points scored in league history.

Though uber talented, playoff success eluded CarMelo the majority of his career. The best chance he had at a title was in 2009 where the Nuggets fell short to the eventual champions, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. He only made it out of the first round one other time.

His performances with the USA Olympic team has definitely bolstered the 6 '7'’ forwards resume. The three time olympic gold medalist is the all time leader in appearance with 31, first in rebounds and second only behind Kevin Durant in points scored internationally.

Carmelo Anthony celebrates during the Olympics. (ESPN)

But where does he rank all time?

Being born in the late 1900’s, I had the privilege of watching Melo’s career unfold right before my eyes. From his days at Oak Hill Academy where he went toe to toe with longtime friend and rival LeBron James in a Nationally Televised high school game, to a National Championship victory after an impressive tournament run during his lone college season at Syracuse where he was named the Most Outstanding of the 2003 Final Four, all the way to his clutch performances at Madison Square Garden. Carmelo has always delivered!!

However when discussing the greats, where will Carmelo Anthony end up? He was never known for his defense and I'm sure Nuggets fans haven’t forgotten how he forced his way out of Denver for greener pastures in New York. And let's gloss over the season he spent with Russ and PG13, as Carmelo was clearly out of his prime and the thoughts of a big three quickly materialized into a big two and a half.

Hindsight being what it is, Melo probably should have waited on a contract extension that prevented him from potentially teaming up with Dwayne Wade and Lebron during the 2010 offseason.

Nevertheless, a trip to the Hall of Fame is undeniable for the legend who averaged 22.5 points per game during 19 seasons. The 6 time all Nba selection sits 9th on the all time scoring list with 28,289 points.

In my opinion, Melo is in the top ten at his position. Not too many players had his pension for putting the ball in the hoop. The true definition of a “go to scorer”. Thanks Melo for the memories.
