Saquon Barkley Becomes Highest-Paid Running Back in NFL History with Record Eagles Deal
Saquon Barkley secures a record-breaking contract extension with the Philadelphia Eagles, becoming the highest-paid running back in NFL history after a dominant 2024 season and a Super Bowl LIX victory. We discuss it here!

Saquon Barkley has redefined the running back position in the NFL with his incredible 2024 season, now he is cashing in with a historic contract extension with the Philadelphia Eagles. Making him the highest paid running back ever. After joining the Eagles in March 2024 on a three year, $37.75 million deal, Barkley exceeded all expectations, leading the league with 2,005 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns during the regular season. His postseason performance was equally impressive, adding 499 rushing yards and five touchdowns, playing a pivotal role in the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Barkley’s impact on the field was immediate. His ability to break tackles, coupled with his vision and agility, made him a constant threat to opposing defenses. His consistent excellence earned him the 2025 NFL Offensive Player of the Year award and solidified his status as one of the premier players in the league.
The running back position has historically been undervalued in terms of compensation, despite its critical role in both the running and passing games. Running backs like Barkley not only contribute significant yardage on the ground but also serve as reliable receivers and pass protectors. Their versatility demands a diverse skill set, making them indispensable to their teams’ offensive success. Barkley’s performance has reignited discussions about the true value of running backs and the need for their compensation to reflect their importance.
Barkley’s recent contract extension with the Eagles highlights this shift in perception. The two year, $41.2 million deal, with $36 million guaranteed and up to $15 million in incentives, makes Barkley the highest paid running back in league history, averaging over $20 million per season. Barkley has often emphasized the importance of hard work and perseverance.
“Nothing is given to you. Everything is earned. You have to have that mindset that you have to work every single day. Learn every single day.”
Barkley’s record setting contract is likely to influence future negotiations for running backs. As running backs continue to showcase their versatility and impact on the game, reasonable compensation becomes increasingly justified. Barkley’s achievements with the Eagles not only highlight his individual excellence but also pave the way for a broader recognition of the indispensable role running backs play in the NFL.

The moment is finally here!! Super Bowl LIX is upon us and we are here to break down the top story lines and what's at stake for both franchises as the two time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs prepare to take on a feisty Philadelphia Eagles squad seeking revenge after their Super Bowl 57 defeat in 2023.
Patrick Mahomes’ Greatness
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes enters the stage//Getty
The Ceasers Superdome in New Orleans is the stage for Sunday night as Patrick Mahomes tries to become the first Quarterback to lead a team to three consecutive Superbowl victories. With a victory, Mahomes and Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid will be etched in history as arguably the greatest QB - Head coach duo of all time. At only 29 years of age, barring injury, the two time regular season MVP has the opportunity to become the most decorated player at the position ever. Entering Sunday, Mahomes already has 3 Superbowl victories with 3 Superbowl MVPS. We are witnessing the rise of a potential suitor for G.O.A.T. Brady who?
The Real Reason the Eagles Are Here
After a standout 2024 season, amassing 2,005 rushing yards, Barkley has been instrumental in leading the Eagles to the Super Bowl LIX. His postseason performances have been dominant. In only 3 games the former Penn St. standout gained 442 rushing yards in only 3 games. He is currently 30 yards shy of surpassing Terell Davis’s 1997 record. A strong performance could not only secure a championship for the Eagles but also position Barkley as a frontrunner for Super Bowl MVP, reaffirming the critical impact of running backs in the NFL.
Kendrick Lamar’s Halftime Show - What should we expect?
2024 was a landmark year for Kendrick Lamar and it will culminate on the world's biggest stage with the help of his TDE labelmate SZA. Headlined by a critically acclaimed album release “GNX”, a high-profile industry feud with Drake, and a dominant showing at this year’s Grammys. This impressive run cemented his influence in the hip-hop industry and solidified his position as a prominent figure in American culture. This isn't the first time Kendrick has performed at the Superbowl, he made his first appearance back in 2022.
Culture Spotlight: Artist Ledisi will perform“Lift Every Voice and Sing”
Local artist Ledisi will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the Black national anthem, marking its fifth consecutive appearance at the Super Bowl. This inclusion underscores the NFL’s ongoing recognition of African American cultural contributions.
Final thoughts and score prediction
To be honest at this stage of my football fandom, a suffering Cowboys fan, I truly just want to see a good game with no affinity for either team. It would be cool to see Patrick Mahomes make history plus I'd love to see a rival lose once again in the sport’s final game. I expect a physical low scoring game with each defense wreaking havoc on shaky offensive attacks. My final score? Chiefs 17 Eagles 10.

According to reports, Former All Pro Running Back Marshawn Lynch is considering running for Mayor of his hometown Oakland, Ca. During a recent episode of his “Politickin’” podcast, the former Super Bowl champion spoke on the possibility he would make a mayoral bid in an upcoming election.
“It might be a possibility.”
On a trip to his alma mater, the University of California, Berkeley, for a ESPN College GameDay appearance, “Beast Mode” began mulling over the idea that he may run for office. As the podcast continued, Lynch jokingly likened his potential conduct as mayor to the late actor and comedian Bernie Mac. In the film, Mac portrayed Mitch Gilliam. A brash, loud mouth bail bondsman who became Vice President of the United States in the 2003 comedy “Head of State.”
“Do you remember when Bernie Mac was walking through, when he was slapping the sh*t out of everybody? That’s how I would be coming through there… slapping the sh*t out of everybody, like, ‘Get your sh*t together.’”
Marshawn Lynch began his NFL career in 2007 when he was drafted 12th overall by the Buffalo Bills. During his four seasons in Buffalo he showcased his powerful running style and earned his reputation as a tough, hard nosed back.
In 2010, Lynch was traded to the Seattle Seahawks where he truly made his mark in the league. Earning him the nickname “Beast Mode” due to his explosive running style. During his time in Seattle, Lynch helped lead the team to back to back Super Bowl appearances. The Seahawks would capture the championship in 2014, with an impressive victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. A game where Lynch rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown.
Lynch announced his retirement from professional football in 2015 but briefly returned in 2019, signing with the Seahwaks during a playoff run. He officially retired for a second time following the 2019 season. Throughout his career, he amassed over 10,000 rushing yards and 85 rushing touchdowns. Lynch will go down as of the most dynamic and memorable backs in NFL history.

LA Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh Offered Colin Kaepernick Coaching Gig
Colin Kaepernick considers a coaching role with Jim Harbaugh, raising questions about a potential return to the NFL and his ongoing impact on social justice. We discuss it here!

The good trouble civil rights activist, Colin Kaepernick, was offered a coaching opportunity by his former head coach and mentor. Some are wondering if this could be a way “Cap” sees some playing time this season. Interestingly enough, the social justice warrior hasn’t wavered on the idea of a return.
“Yeah, we talked a little bit about it. He’s considering it. He was out of the country. He said he was going to get back to me. We haven’t reconnected since then. That was early, early in the year. ”
Why is this noteworthy? On Aug. 26, 2016, Colin began sitting during the national anthem. After the game, Kaepernick shared his thoughts on the recent injustices and why he chose to sit during the anthem.
“It is to protest the injustices that are happening in America, the oppression that is happening in America… ”
The following Sunday after famously speaking with U.S. Army veteran Nate Boyer, Kaepernick took a knee alongside his 49ers teammates. Images that will live forever.
SInce that time, the free agent quarterback has been trying to get back on the field as a player, though it’s been widely speculated that he's been blackballed. One thing that’s unclear is how the NFL would respond to Kaepernick in the role of a coach. If he ever reconnects with Harbaugh, his potential to influence as a coach would manifest differently than as a player. Challenging his alleged “blackballing” streak.
“I mean, it’s something I’ve trained my whole life for. So, to be able to step back on the field would be a major moment, a major accomplishment for me. I think it’s something that I could bring a lot to a team and help them win a championship. ”

We are officially in a new era! A Kansas City Chiefs Dynasty! The Kansas City Chiefs have firmly planted themselves at the top of the NFL mountain with its third Super Bowl in as many as five seasons. Future Hall of Famers, Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Tight End Travis Kelce, and Head Coach Andy Reid secured another championship after what some may call a tumultuous regular season for the squad.
The first half was a defensive struggle, with multiple turnovers and uncharacteristic mishaps by both teams. Certainly mirroring the issues that plagued the Chiefs during the regular season. Trailing 10-3 at the half, the second half was vastly different for Mahomes and company. They held the 49ers to zero points in the third while putting up ten of their own, eventually earning their way into overtime with two crucial Harrison Butker field goals in the fourth.
Neither team fully took control of the opportunity at hand, failing to reach the end zone on their initial drives. The 49ers finally hit a field goal with a little over seven minutes on the clock and as time wound down, Mahomes guided Kansas City into the red zone and threw a three-yard game winning touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman with three seconds remaining in the extra period.
Chiefs Kingdom, we just won back-to-back Super Bowls.
— Kansas City Chiefs (@Chiefs) February 12, 2024
Celebrate accordingly. GOOD NIGHT 🏆 pic.twitter.com/NxrsjEz0WL
The victory cemented the team as one of the all time greats and they became the first team to be back-to-back champions since the New England Patriots in 2003-2004. Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP for the third time in his career, firmly entrenching him as the second greatest quarterback ever behind Tom Brady. Mind you he has all of these accolades while only being a full time start for six seasons. We may be looking at the new G.O.A.T. and a potential three peat. Something that has never been done in NFL history.
“Really just the whole game, just our whole entire season, it was the defense keeping us in there, and the offense making plays when it counted. Just know that the Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs.”
A bold statement from the leader of a team that were underdogs their entire road to the big game. The Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers were all favorites during this run and given this victory and their dominance since the beginning of the decade, Mahomes may be right.

Damar Hamlin is releasing his documentary entitled Did We Win, which will follow the Buffalo Bills' safety and his miraculous recovery after almost dying on the football field. The title of the film references a question Hamlin asked from the hospital after waking from a medically induced sedation. According to reports, Damar’s team has been recording his journey since arriving at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The film will document how he fought to regain his strength and handle life after his terrifying injury against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football.
He was discharged from the hospital on January 9th, 2023, and was briefly monitored at his Buffalo, N.Y. home. After his release, the professional athlete opened up about suffering from commotio cordis, a rare form of cardiac arrest.
“Not to sound cliché, man, but the ‘wow moment’ is every day just being able to wake up and just take deep breaths and live a peaceful life. To have a family, to have people around me that love me, that care about me, and for those people to still have me in their lives. They almost lost me. I died on national TV in front of the whole world. That right there is just the biggest blessing of it all. For me to still have my people and for my people to still have me.”
Clay Tweel directed the documentary with Beau Flynn handling production duties through FlynnPictureCo company. Skydance Sports and NFL Films will serve as the sports doc’s executive producers.
“Damar is a real-life superhero. His impact and recovery in such a short period of time has been extraordinary to witness. I am honored that he and his family have entrusted us. Damar’s incredible story needed to be shared with audiences and look forward to taking this step into nonfiction with him.”
The 25-year-old made the Bills 53-man active roster last month. He will serve as the Bills' backup safety this season.

In 2010 Former NFL Player and Super Bowl Champion Reggie Bush had to give up his NCAA Heisman Trophy that he won in 2005 because he received over $300,000 in cash and gifts during his collegiate career, which was against the NCAA rules. Now Reggie Bush is fighting to get his Heisman Trophy back after the NCAA denied him back in 2021, even though the NCAA put out new rules that athletes can start profiting off of their image.

On August 23rd, 2023 Reggie Bush held a press conference at the Los Angeles Coliseum, after filing a defamation lawsuit against the NCAA. During the press conference, Bush’s attorney stated. “Most recently, the NCAA has made a statement about me, accusing me of engaging in a pay-for-play arrangement, which is 100% not true," Bush said in a statement."Not only is it not true, but there is no evidence to even support that claim. This action seeks to hold the NCAA accountable for its unlawful conduct and for the damages, mental anguish, humiliation, and embarrassment it has caused Mr. Bush by the NCAA’s false and defamatory statement.”

The NCAA infractions process exists to promote fairness in college sports. The rules that govern fair play are voted on, agreed to, and expected to be upheld by all NCAA member schools.”
During Reggie Bush’s amazing collegiate Heisman career, he rushed 1740 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. Bush then went on to continue his career in the NFL where he played for the New Orleans Saints where he won a Super Bowl championship, he also played for the Miami Dolphins, and Detroit Lions.

Michael Oher Challenges False Adoption Story from 'The Blind Side'
Michael Oher's 14-page petition alleges that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy earned over $300 million from the Oscar Award-winning movie, while he received nothing for a story that depended on him. We discuss it here!

Michael Oher, the NFL star whose purported adoption by an prosperous white Memphis family became the basis for the 2009 film ‘The Blind Side,’ has alleged that the narrative was fabricated. As per a petition submitted in the Shelby County Probate Court on August 14th, Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, who welcomed Oher into their home during his high school years, allegedly never legally adopted him. Oher claims they deceived him into signing a document that granted them conservatorship, providing them legal control over his business transactions.
The 14-page document, acquired by ESPN, outlined that the Tuohy family leveraged their conservatorship authority to secure a deal resulting in over $300 million for themselves and their biological children from the highly successful Oscar-winning movie. In contrast, Oher, the individual at the core of the narrative, received no compensation for a story "that hinged on his existence." The petition further revealed that even years after the movie's release, the Tuohys continued to refer to the now 37-year-old Oher as their adopted son, utilizing this status to advance their ventures, including Leigh Anne's roles as an author and motivational speaker.
“The lie of Michael’s adoption is one upon which co-conservators Leigh Anne Tuohy and Sean Tuohy have enriched themselves at the expense of their Ward, the undersigned Michael Oher,” the contents of the court document state. “Michael Oher discovered this lie to his chagrin and embarrassment in February of 2023, when he learned that the conservatorship to which he consented on the basis that doing so would make him a member of the Tuohy family, in fact provided him no familial relationship with the Tuohys.”
Adapted from Michael Lewis' 2006 book of the identical title, ‘The Blind Side’ movie recounts the journey of a homeless African American teenager who defied his disadvantaged background to achieve NFL success, aided by his adoptive parents. The film features performances by Sandra Bullock in the role of Leigh Anne, Tim McGraw as Sean, and Quinton Aaron portraying Oher. This sports drama achieved remarkable acclaim, amassing $309 million in box office revenue against a $29 million budget.

The 2023 NFL Draft witnessed a groundbreaking moment in the history for the culture as three black quarterbacks, Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, and Anthony Richardson, were drafted within the first five picks. This is a significant achievement for the black community, especially given the challenges that African American quarterbacks have faced in the past.

Ultimately, the Carolina Panthers selected Bryce Young with the number 1 overall pick. Young, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner, is a talented quarterback who possesses excellent leadership skills, agility, and a strong arm. His exceptional performance in college football, coupled with his incredible work ethic, made him a prime candidate for the top pick.
C.J. Stroud, who played for Ohio State, was drafted as the second overall pick by the Houston Texans. Stroud is a skilled quarterback who is known for his accuracy and ability to read defenses. He had an outstanding college career, and his selection in the top five picks is a testament to his talent and hard work.
Lastly, Anthony Richardson, who played for the University of Florida, was drafted as the fourth overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts. Richardson is a dual-threat quarterback who is known for his speed and agility. His incredible performance in college football, coupled with his impressive physical attributes, made him an attractive prospect for the Colts. The selection of these three black quarterbacks in the top five picks is a significant achievement for the NFL and a sign of progress towards greater diversity and inclusion in the league.
More from the 2023 NFL Draft
The Texans were eager to acquire top level prospects on both sides of the ball. After making a deal with the Arizona Cardinals to move up to pick 3, Houston acquired who many feel was the top overall prospect in this year's class, edge rusher from the University of Alabama Will Anderson Jr. A monster of an athlete with quick hands and an extremely high motor.
Rounding out the top 5 was the Seattle Seahawks selecting Devon Witherspoon, defensive back from the university of Illinois. With the attitude and athletic profile scouts gush over, Witherspoon has a chance to become a high impact player immediately.
The middle of the draft saw teams focusing on interior lineman and defensive difference makers. The Philadelphia Eagles continue to knock this drafting thing out of the park with their selection of Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia at pick 9. A disruptive force in the interior who fell due to off the field concerns.

“Grinding all my life for this moment.”
After 19 consecutive picks to begin the draft without a wide receiver, four in a row came off the board to start the 20s.
The bottom of the draft usually spots pretty good teams who simply are looking to add depth or crazy value. With no topflight prospect still on the board at 26, The Cowboys selected Mazi Smith, DT, University of Michigan much to the delight of Dallas’s All Pro edge rusher Micah Parson.

To round out the first round, the two participants in last season’s Super Bowl added to their defense with Nolan Smith, OLB, Georgia and Felix Anudike-Uzomah, DE, Kansas State respectively at 30 and 31.
KEY NOTES from the Draft
The running back position saw a slight resurgence with 2 players chosen within the top 12 picks. (Pick 8 - Atlanta Falcons Bijan Robinson,Texas; Pick 12 - Detroit Lions, Jahmyr Gibbs, Alabama)
The selection of Gibbs at pick 12 was probably the most surprising selection on Day 1. With Gibbs even being surprised by the pick.
"I feel great," Gibbs said. "I didn't know I would get picked as high as I did because running backs don't get picked as high in this new age and new era of the NFL draft, but it was pretty shocking to me.” - Jahmyr Gibbs, ESPN
Alabama also sets a NFL Draft record with 15 consecutive seasons with a draft pick in the first round. This is also the third time in the last four years a Alabama QB was taken in the first round.
Congratulations to all of the young men drafted on opening day. It's an honor to be a first round pick and potentially life altering for them and their families for generations. Now that their draft fates are sealed, it's time for these guys to live up to the hype!! We’ll be watching!!

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday that the Ravens and star quarterback Lamar Jackson have come to an agreement on a five-year, $260 million contract, effectively ending an ongoing battle of contract negotiations between Jackson and the Ravens organization.
The agreement was reached just a few hours prior to the start of the 2023 NFL Draft. Josina Anderson reports that the contract comes with $185 million in guaranteed money.
"You know, for the last few months, there's been a lot of he's said, she's said," Jackson stated in a video posted by the Ravens. "A lot of nail-biting, a lot of head scratching going on, but for the next five years, it's a lot of flock going on. Let's go, baby. Let's go. Let's go, man. Can't wait to get there. Can't wait to be there. Can't wait to light up M&T (Bank Stadium) for the next five years, man. Let's get it."
According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the negotiations for a substantial contract between Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens have been ongoing for over two years. Rapoport added that after Jalen Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million deal 10 days ago, the Ravens made a competitive offer that surpassed it.

Jackson took over as the starting quarterback midway through his rookie campaign in 2018, has been dominant on the field ever since. In his first complete season, he won the NFL MVP award in 2019 after throwing for 3,127 yards and a league-leading 36 touchdown passes, as well as rushing for 1,206 yards and seven scores.
Jackson's versatile skills as a dual threat QB make him a formidable threat for defenses. The Ravens have tailored their offensive strategy around his running prowess, but Jackson's underrated abilities as a pocket passer and with his arm have played a crucial role in his success. His massive new contract is a testament to his exceptional all-around talents.

On January 2, the world watched in shock as Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, collapsed on live tv during a Monday Night NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital in a scary situation.
3 months later, Hamlin is finally cleared to return to playing football. Bills general manager Brandon Beane relayed the news. “He’s fully cleared, he’s here, and he is of the mindset. He’s in a great head space to come back and make his return,” Beane said of Hamlin, according to ESPN. Hamlin has spent the past few months in physical therapy, working with doctors and has been attending a few team practices.
Damar Hamlin has been "fully cleared" to resume football activities, Bills GM Brandon Beane announced. pic.twitter.com/a2avQrl2UK
— ESPN (@espn) April 18, 2023
“When he left Cincinnati, he came here, it was Buffalo General [Hospital]. He saw a couple of specialists here in Buffalo, and then, since then, he’s seen three additional specialists, most recently on Friday (April 14), and they’re all in agreement. It’s not 2-1 or 3-1 or anything like that. They’re all in lockstep of what this was and that he’s cleared, resumed full activities just like anyone else who was coming back from an injury or whatever,” Beane stated.
On Tuesday, Hamlin gave his first news conference since the event happened and stated that doctors concluded it was a result of commotio cordis, "an extremely rare consequence of blunt force trauma to the heart that happens at exactly the wrong time in the heart rhythm, causing the heart to stop beating effective," per the American Heart Association, which caused him to suffer cardiac arrest on the field.
"My heart is still in the game. I love the game. It is something I want to prove to myself, not nobody else," Hamlin said. "I just wanna show people that that fear is a choice that you can keep going in something without having the answers and without knowing what's at the end of the tunnel. Or you might feel anxious, you might feel any type of way, but you just keep putting that right foot in front of the left one, and you keep going. I want to stand for that."
Many people after witnessing the event believed that that would be Hamlin’s last time playing in an NFL game after such a traumatic experience but Hamlin is determined to keep going.
"Being around my teammates, the camaraderie of the sport of football, you know, that's what makes this sport the best in the world, is the brotherhood that it creates, the unity that it creates between all people of all aspects of life and just different journeys, it brings them together for one common goal," Hamlin said. "And I feel like that's a direct correlation of what happened to me that night, you know, just bringing people together in prayer, love, but that's what this sport does as well, so my heart is in it completely and it takes a lot to be great in this game, and I got a long way to go. I got a long journey to go, but I'm committed to it each day, day in, day out."
We wish nothing but the best for Hamlin as the 25 year old safety looks to make his NFL return in what will be inspiring for millions of people to see.

Jalen Hurts, 24, and this year’s Super Bowl Runner Ups, the Philadelphia Eagles, have agreed to a massive contract extension worth a stunning $255 million over the next five years for the quarterback’s services. Hurts’ deal is the biggest contract in terms of average value in NFL history.

Leading the Eagles to a 14-1 record as a starter in 2022, the uber talented dual threat quarterback has definitely earned this mega deal. A second round pick in 2020, Jalen took over for a struggling Carson Wentz and hasn't looked back since. He has put together a solid 23-11 record as a starter for the Eagles after Wentz was traded the following offseason.
After a dominating team performance against the New York Giants during the playoffs this past January, Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Nick Sirianni expressed how important Jalen was to his football team.
“I know this is high praise, but to have him out there is like having — I shouldn’t even go there — it’s like having Michael Jordan out there. He’s your leader. He’s your guy.”

In a similar fashion, Eagles’ owner Jeffrey Lurie had this to say to the media in regards of Hurts’ status in the league.
“The hardest part, for sure, is the scarcity of really good quarterbacks, and we got one, and we got a very special player.”
According to sources, the deal also includes a no trade clause which is the first in team history.
Hurts was a legitimate MVP candidate last season, and at times the front runner, racking up over 4,300 yards through the air and ground with an impressive 22 touchdowns to only six interceptions with 13 additional scores rushing. The 43 total touchdowns surpassed Eagles great Donovan McNabb for most ever in a single season in franchise history.
He showed tremendous growth as a passer throughout his second season as a full time starter. One of his most iconic performances from last season came in the most crucial game, the Super Bowl. Going toe to toe with Patrick Mahommes and the Kansas City Chiefs, Hurts racked up 374 total yards and four touchdowns with only one turnover that eventually led to the Chiefs victory.
The Eagles made a smart decision by immediately locking up their quarterback of the future without letting things stall because of contract negotiations. Hmmm, now imagine a world where the Ravens acted similarly in regards to Lamar Jackson.
Wishful thinking i guess…

Mahomes leads Chiefs to Second Super Bowl Victory in Four Years Despite Injury
Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City Chiefs secure their dynasty status with a thrilling victory in Super Bowl 57.
By: Joshua Martin
What a game!!
The Kansas City Chiefs locked up their second Super Bowl victory in 4 years in front of an electric crowd at State Farm Arena in Glendale, Arizona for Super Bowl 57 Sunday night. Albeit in unfamiliar territory, the Chiefs entered the game as 1.5 point underdogs, the victory was sealed after an impressive 26-yard run, all on a balky ankle I might add, by the eventual 2 time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.
Patrick Mahomes | Kevin Sabitus via Getty Images
Mahomes re-injured the ankle right before halftime after landing awkwardly on a tackle made by Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards. The Chiefs appeared to be heading towards another disappointing showing in the Super Bowl after trailing by 10 entering the half with a visibly injured quarterback.
The second half was the polar opposite as the Chiefs scored 4 touchdowns on all 4 of their possessions in the 2nd half, eventually taking a 28-27 lead midway through the 4th quarter against the feisty Eagles.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts tied it up ( 35 - 35) after a 2 yard score and 2 point conversion with 5:15 remaining.
The aforementioned run by Mahomes, followed by strategically killing the clock with a series of kneel downs, set up a 27 yard field goal attempt by Harrison Butker that eventually gave the Chiefs the victory.
I'll admit the late game kneeling was a lackluster way to end an otherwise entertaining matchup, but it didn't, however, spoil a night full of memorable firsts.
Both squads started Black quarterbacks for the first time in Superbowl history.

Hurts told reporters about the significance of the game, according to NFL.com.
“I think it’s history. I think it’s something that’s worthy of being noted and it is history. It’s come a long way. I think it’s only been seven African-American quarterbacks to play in the Super Bowl, so to be the first for something is pretty cool. I know it will be a good one.”
Rihanna even debuted to the world her new baby bump during a strong showing during the halftime show.

We use terms like “G.O.A.T.” and “dynasty” a tad bit too loosely these days but 3 AFC Championships and 2 Super Bowl victories in a 4 year span looks pretty Goatish to me as Patrick Mahomes leaves no doubt that he is the best Quarterback in the league and the Chiefs are indeed a dynasty with a Hall of Famer at Head coach.
In Summation, it was refreshing to get a competitive game featuring two teams who were honestly the best squads from their respective conferences all year. Now the long wait begins as the 22-23 season concludes.
*sighs
There’s always next year Cowboys fans…

Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, was released Monday January 9 from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and is now back in Buffalo, one week after suffering cardiac arrest during the Monday Night Football game in Cincinnati against the Bengals. It’s reported that he’s in good hands at the Buffalo General hospital, according to Cincinnati’s WLWT channel 5 news.

Damar appeared to make a easy routine tackle in the game against Cincinnati Bengals wide out, Tee Higgins. Hamlin stood up after the play, but eventually collapsed on the field moments later. Medical staff rushed onto the field and performed life-saving CPR to help keep Hamlin alive. Hamlin is very grateful to be alive and receive so much love he took time to speak some words on Twitter.
“Watching the world come together around me on Sunday was truly an amazing feeling”
Headed home to Buffalo today with a lot of love on my heart. 🫶🏾

Watching the world come together around me on Sunday was truly an amazing feeling.
The same love you all have shown me is the same love that I plan to put back into the world n more.
Bigger than football! 🫶🏾
Although Hamlin has made significant progress, it’s uncertain when he will be able to return to football activities. He is placed on injured reserve for the reminder of the season from the traumatic incident. Normally, when a player is placed on IR their salary is cut in half, but the Buffalo Bills and the NFL worked out an agreement to pay him his full salary. Which opens a conversation on why NFL athletes should get guaranteed contracts in the future.

Mike Tomlin Has Never Had a Losing Season as an NFL Head Coach

With a victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, Mike Tomlin has made history as the only Head Coach to go 16 consecutive seasons without a losing record. With as much turnaround the NFL experiences with teams having up and down years, Tomlin has proved to be one of the most consistent coaches in history.
The Steelers finish the season at 9-8 after a rough 2-6 start. Despite going 7-2 down the stretch, The Steelers just missed the playoffs this season. Steelers running back, Najee Harris, was very optimistic about the future of the Steelers’ organization after their last win.
"I think that for us to come together through all that adversity that we had early on in the year, for us to finish out the season the way we did, it should be motivation for us," Harris said. "We should be hungry for next year. That's what I was telling a lot of guys on the sideline when I saw the Dolphins won. I just shook Kenny's hand and told him he had a great year. We've gotta do a lot as a team if we wanna be where we're at next year, not waiting for the team to lose, to get in. We got a lot to build on to make the playoffs, but we accomplished not having a losing season from it. We just finished really strong."
Tomlin is one of the few Black Head Coaches in the NFL and has paved the way for other Black coaches to have longevity in the league. 16 straight seasons with no losing records is an amazing accomplishment. Even just coaching 16 years straight as a Head Coach in the NFL is a statement itself. Tomlin deserves all of his flowers.
The Steelers players have a lot of respect for Tomlin and despite them being out of the playoffs, the team wanted to make sure they kept Tomlin’s streak alive. Steelers cornerback, Arthur Maulet, was adamant about securing the victory for Tomlin.
“We’re not about to be his first team to have a losing record,” Maulet said. “We’re not about to be known for that shit. It just can’t happen.”
It’s clear the Steelers have some talent and the future is bright for the organization. With Tomlin’s track record, expect the Steelers to be right back on the winning side next season.

24 year old Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, suffered cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals Monday night. Hamlin collapsed on the field after making a tackle on Tee Higgins in what caused a scary scene, leaving players and fans in tears. Damar’s heartbeat was restored on the field after he was given CPR, and he was transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for further testing and treatment.
The incident happened with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter and Cincinnati leading the game, 7-3. The Buffalo Bills released a statement on Damar’s current condition, stating he is still in critical condition.
Damar remains in the ICU in critical condition with signs of improvement noted yesterday and overnight.
— Buffalo Bills (@BuffaloBills) January 4, 2023
He is expected to remain under intensive care as his health care team continues to monitor and treat him.
In the midst of this horrific situation, there has been a positive as Damar has a GoFundMe set up to fund a toy drive in his hometown of McKees Rocks, Pa. His goal was to raise just $2500 but now the fundraiser has raised over $6 million with over 200,000 donors. What Damar needs most is support and this incident has brought a world of new fans and supporters to his side.
Several Bills players visited Hamlin in the hospital to show support. Fans also gathered outside of the hospital as many were affected by incident.

The incident shows the dark side of the football. Watching a player go down like that on live television is traumatizing for any viewer, or teammates. The game was obviously postponed as of course, the game itself was no longer important, with Hamlin’s health being a priority.
Hamlin was having a breakout season with 91 tackles made this year. Our prayers go out to Hamlin as we hope he can make a full recovery.

Athlete Spotlight: NFL Prospect Alim McNeill
By: Tialena Evans
This week’s athlete spotlight is NFL prospect, Alim McNeill! McNeill is one of top rated defensive tackles in this years upcoming NFL Draft and chose to forego his senior season to live out his dream of playing in the NFL. McNeill recently showed out at his NC State Pro Day, running a 4.94-second 40-yard dash, 30.5-inch vertical jump, nine-foot broad jump, and 27 bench press reps of 225 pounds. McNeill was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina which played a big role in him choosing to attend North Carolina State University. He wanted the opportunity to play in front of family friends in his city. McNeill was a 3 sport athlete growing up, playing basketball, baseball and football. He comes from a sports family with a younger brother who is committed to football at Oregon and an older sister who is a teacher now.
He is a big music fan, with music being one of his hobbies outside of sports. McNeill is still in college with a semester left and will be getting his degree in STS (Science, technology and society) and will be taking the technology route in which he wants to create his own music software. “It’s something I use as an escape to get things off my mind and I find it incredibly interesting. I spend most of my free time doing that” says McNeil.
“People should know and do know that I’m a loving and caring person, the nicest guy I can be to everyone each and every day. I am dedicated to my job of perfecting my craft and hard working. You will never see me not giving my all in anything that I do.”
We talked with Alim McNeill in an exclusive interview, check it out below!
How long have you been playing the game of football and how did you get started?
Alim McNeill: I’ve been playing since I was seven years old. My father introduced me to football. The first organization that I played for was the North Raleigh Bulldogs of Pop Warner.
Who has been your biggest influence in helping you along your football journey and who are some of the players or coaches you look up to that guided you along the way to where you are now as a player?
Alim McNeill: I would say my biggest influence is probably my dad just because he introduced me to the game. He played himself, and he taught me all of the things that I know now. As far as coaches, I’ve had a bunch of really good coaches throughout my life even when I first started playing ball; Coach Trevor was a good coach for me. I would probably say the most influential coach for me was Coach Gladden who is my coach in high school at Sanderson. He just kind of showed me the ropes of everything from playing next level football and just next level thinking on the field as far as football IQ. I still talk to him till this day for the most part. He’ll hit me up every now and then but he taught me everything pretty much that I use on the field today.
As far as players, there’s four guys that left before I got to NC State like Bradley Chubb, BJ, Jessie Jones, and Kentavius Street; I look up to those guys a lot just because of their pure mentality on and off the field. That’s what I want to emulate and which is why I committed to NC State for the most part. Also, guys like Fletcher Cox and Aaron Donald, so there’s a lot of different players I look up to that are influential to me. I try to take a piece of their game and add it to mine and emulate their mentality on and off the field.
What other college football offers did you have coming out of high school other than NC State University?
Alim McNeill: I had a lot, I think I finished out with 40, but my top three schools were Alabama, Clemson, and NC State. I also had schools like Penn State, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and all the ACC schools like Louisville, Syracuse, UNC, and others. But for me, I didn’t really want the glam in the glitz of certain programs really it just wasn’t for me. I didn’t really feel like I fit in at those types of programs.
What do you feel is your most proudest football career play or moment?
Alim McNeill: It was a playoff game during my junior year in highschool against Southview out of Fayetteville and we had scrimmaged them earlier in the year and they were doing a lot of trash talking. We ended up having a chance to play them in an actual game and they had brought out this big banner and I forgot what it said but it was something disrespectful and we just really didn’t like that. We ended up putting 40 points up on them and they only scored like one touchdown. That was probably one of my favorite games that we played in high school.
What motivates you and how do you define success?
Alim McNeill: I motivate myself because I know what I want to do and ultimately I’m the one who has to go put in the work. So every day when I get up my motivation is really just me and just working on myself, working on my craft every day and being the best person I can be every day. Every day that I’m going to work out I treat it like it’s work and I treat it like a business.
For me when I start to see the things that I work on start applying to the field and start working for me that’s what I deem successful for me. Whether it’s strength, the time in the weight room, time out on the field, my football IQ, watching film, taking notes, studying other players and stuff like that. I feel like that’s what success is to me, when you start applying things to the field that you’ve worked on for months during the off season.
How do you describe your style of play and what separates you from other players in your position?
Alim McNeill: My style of play I would say is aggressive but smart. I really take pride in learning the game and increasing my IQ of the game. There’s so many different ways to be able to play this game and that’s why I really like learning about all of the different ways and it just gives me advantage over my opponent. I would also say that I am passionate and give a lot of effort out on the field and I give my all to the game.
What sacrifices have you had to make, to make your dream a reality?
Alim McNeill: Being in a pandemic, you have to sacrifice the partying, and going out stuff like that. I really have to be smart about my choices because I don’t want to get sick and sit out for two weeks. If I can’t work out it’s not beneficial to me. I’ve also had to change who I hung out with because I know where I’m trying to get to and sometimes those people are beneficial to my success. Also, I sacrifice a lot of time, like not being able to go home for holidays and there’s no summers so there’s not much that you can do.
What aspect of the draft process excites you the most?
Alim McNeill: What excites me the most is just having the opportunity to be in that position. I’m just grateful for the opportunity to have a Pro Day and be a part of the draft. Last year when COVID-19 hit, those players didn’t get a Pro Day so a lot of guys didn’t get the opportunity to showcase themselves for scouts and GM’s.
Where do you see yourself and your football career in 10 years? What are some accomplishments and accolades do you hope to achieve
Alim McNeill: 10 years from now I see myself as a veteran player, a guy who’s one of the premier players of the league, who lets the league know what type of player he is and shown dominance on the field. I want to be no more than anything though as a guy who can be respected, trusted, reliable guy, nice guy and a real cool dude. As far as accolades, I’m not really big into the amount of sacks or the amount out of tackles or the awards. I just really want to win Super Bowls and ball games.

Cam Newton, an NFL Quarterback, 3x Pro Bowler, NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, former MVP, went tit for tat with a young athlete who attended his camp this past weekend.
The young high schooler who was eventually identified as Jseth Owens from Perkiomen High School in Pennsylvania, hurled a slew of insults at the seasoned vet, again at his camp.
Kid was really saying this at CAM NEWTON’S own camp 😳 (h/t thesportsuniverse/TikTok) pic.twitter.com/YjQjc53tNZ
— Overtime (@overtime) February 21, 2021
“You about to be a free agent,” says Owens in one part of the clip.
“I’m Rich.” Responds Newton.
“You About to be poor,” says Owens.
While it’s cringeworthy to say the least with this exchange of words between the two, the young athlete got what he wanted: attention. It was picked up by almost every media outlet before the sun set on Sunday.
The conversation was exaggerated by said outlets, calling it a “Heated exchange,” or an “argument,” which it could barely be that due to Cam looking to actually talk to the kid’s father (someone who’s actually in his age range) over the kid himself.
Any young athlete watching this video please don’t be this kid, Don’t miss your chance to learn something from someone who has been their at the highest level in this sport.... STAY HUMBLE https://t.co/BCmGPK8w1W

— Cameron Rolle (@CRolleLB52) February 21, 2021
What is Deference:
def·er·ence
/ˈdef(ə)rəns/
noun
noun: deference
1. humble submission and respect.
This kid had none of that. Trolling or not.
Newton holds a 7v7 camp and sponsors numerous high school teams around the country to improve their talents throughout the offseason. This is an opportunity for many kids to get better, network and get to meet a successful pro athlete in real time while doing it.
The submission should stem from the fact that one is in the position and presence to get to a place where they are seeking to get to: in this case it’s professional football, maybe even going D1.
There are over 100 D1 programs in the United States, and each have a limited number of scholarships to give. There are over one and a half million high school athletes in the country… if you were to do some quick math, less than 1% make it to this point.
A fraction of the 1% of those who become D1 athletes make it to the pros.
Where the respect comes in is from the fact that you are again in the presence of someone who made it to that point. Newton did not have it easy, as he jumped from D1 to Junior College and back to D1, had a few scandals on the way… and still made it.
But nonetheless, poor Jseth decided deference, respect, whatever you want to call it, was not necessary, despite the position he was placed in. Jseth issued out an apology via social media.

But luckily, this closed out with a (kind of) happy ending between the two. Newton pulls Owens aside to discuss Owens’ play, his season and record, along with his stats. Owens was radio silent, but here’s to hoping that his outlook changes sooner than later.
