First Franchise of Ice Cube's BIG3 Basketball League Sold for $10 Million
Ice Cube's BIG3 Basketball League makes headlines as it sells its inaugural franchise for a massive $10 million, signaling a significant milestone in the league's growth and expansion. We discuss it here!

Ice Cube’s BIG3 league sells its first franchise for a massive $10 million dollars as the league continues its expansion plans.
The deal was announced on Friday, May 10th by a group led by investment firm DCB Sports out of Los Angeles. The new team will be based in L.A. and is no doubt a monumental milestone for the basketball league.
The eight-figure deal comes as the league transitions from a traveling model to one where each team in the league is based in its home city. A move the Hip-Hop legend believes will strengthen the league’s respective fanbases.
“We need to plant our roots in cities so we can be more than a rolling all-star game coming through. It’s really about growing the sport and the league. We can plant our roots in these cities. It is great to come through with, like, a rolling All-Star event. But if you want to really unlock the fan-base potential, connecting to cities does that.”
The league is not only adding a new franchise in Los Angeles but the BIG3 is looking to add four new ownership groups by the start of the 2024 BIG3 season in June. With the hopes of having all 12 of their existing teams sold prior to the 2025 BIG3 season.
Gary LaDrido of DCB Sports Managing Partner, pointed to 3-on-3 basketball being introduced as an Olympic sport back in 2021 at the 2020 Tokyo Games as a contributing factor in his group’s acquisition of the L.A. franchise.
“We view it as an interesting property. Grabbing the LA market is super cool — and for Ice Cube to trust us to usher that in.”
The 2024 BIG3 season will kick off on June 15 in Oakland, Calif.

The 38 year old expressed her love for the game and the factors that lead to her retirement.

“My HEART & body knew, but I needed to give my mind time to accept it. I always wanted to walk off the court with no parade or tour, just privately with the ones I love. What now was to be my last game, I walked off the court with my daughter. I ended the journey just as I started it, with her.”
The two time League MVP also mentioned that a string of foot injuries also contributed to her calling it quits earlier than expected.
“This offseason hasn’t been fun on a foot that isn’t cooperating. It’s no fun playing in pain (10 surgeries in my career) it’s no fun knowing what you could do, if only…it’s no fun hearing ‘she isn’t the same’ when I know why, it’s no fun accepting the fact you need surgery AGAIN.”
The former No. 1 overall player coming out of highschool enrolled at the University of Tennessee under the legendary women’s basketball coach Pat Summit. While there Parker won two National Championships simultaneously being recognized as the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player both times. She would later be drafted first overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2008 WNBA draft.
In 2016, Parker led the Sparks to an WNBA title and was named the WNBA Finals Most Valuable Player. In 2021, Parker signed with her hometown team, the Chicago Sky, and led the franchise to its first championship and the second of her career.
Parker signed with the Las Vegas Aces in 2023, winning her third title in the process. An TNT analyst, the newly retired Parker will continue her role with the company.

Reggie Bush Set to Reclaim Heisman Trophy

As a part of a decision made by the Heisman Trust Wednesday (April 24th), the Heisman Trophy is returning to Reggie Bush and its replica to the University of Southern Cal. Bush will also be allowed to attend all future Heisman Trophy ceremonies starting this fall.
The Heisman Trust’s decision comes after Bush forfeited his Heisman trophy back in 2010 in the wake of NCAA sanctions for USC. These violations included Bush receiving improper benefits during his Trojans career, spanning from 2003 to 2005.
“Recognizing that the compensation of student athletes is an accepted practice and appears here to stay, these fundamental changes in college athletics led the Trust to decide that now is the right time to return the Trophy to Bush, who unquestionably was the most outstanding college football player of 2005.”
The NCAA vacated 14 victories in which Reggie Bush played including the Trojans impressive victory over Oklahoma after the 2004 season. USC’s sanctions also included the vacating of the 2004 national title, the first time a major college football champion had been stripped of its championship.
“Personally, I’m thrilled to reunite with my fellow Heisman winners and be a part of the storied legacy of the Heisman Trophy, and I’m honored to return to the Heisman family. I also look forward to working together with the Heisman Trust to advance the values and mission of the organization.”
Bush’s impressive play on the field made him one of the most transcendent college athletes of all time. He averaged 8.5 yards per touch from scrimmage during his USC career, including rushing for 1,740 yards and 8.7 yards per carry on only 200 carries during his Heisman campaign. Bush was so dominant that season that his 784 first-place votes are the fifth most in Heisman Trophy history. Bush went on to become the No. 2 overall pick in the 2006 draft by the New Orleans Saints.

South Carolina Beats Iowa in NCAA Championship Led by Dawn Staley

Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Lady Gamecocks made history Sunday afternoon, inside of a packed Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, OH. Becoming only the fifth team in NCAA history to cap off an undefeated season with a national championship victory. The Caitlin Clark led Iowa Hawkeyes were no match against the Lady Gamecocks tenacious defense, who additionally became only the tenth team in women’s basketball history to complete an entire season undefeated. Finishing at an impressive 38-0.
Coming off the success of Caitlin Clark’s record breaking season, the Lady Hawkeyes started the game off hot. Jumping out to a 20-9 advantage in the first quarter, finishing the quarter with a 27-20 lead. However, after South Carolina made the necessary adjustments, specifically Coach Staley’s placement of guard Raven Johnson on Iowa’s Clark, the SEC team wouldn’t finish a quarter trailing. Johnson seemingly took the matchup personally as the two have a checkered on court history.
“Don’t let her score. I was ready for the moment and I take defense very hard, like I take it to heart. I studied her moves, and I was ready. I had confidence this year. I was telling myself last year’s not going to happen again.”
Clark finished the game with 30 points but it wasn’t efficient. When Raven guarded the nation’s top player head on, she shot 3 of 11, 27.3% shooting and only scored 7 points. With Caitlin effectively stymied, the game became manageable for the 2024 AP coach of the year and her driven South Carolina squad.
“It doesn’t always end like you want it to end. I’m just super proud of where I work. It’s unbelievable.”
After the massive win, Staley thanked Clark and her contributions to the game after her legendary season.
"I wanna personally thank Caitlin Clark for lifting up our sport, she carried a heavy load, when she's the number 1 pick in the WNBA draft she's gonna lift that league up as well. So Caitlin if you're out there you are one of the GOATS" -Dawn Staley

Former Ohio State Football Players Found Not Guilty in Rape and Kidnapping Case

In 2020, two Ohio State football players, were accused of raping a fellow female student. Amir I. Riep and Jahsen L. Wint were recently found not guilty on all charges including two counts each of rape and one count of kidnapping.
Dan Sabol and Sam Shamansky represented Riep and Wint as their defense attorneys respectively and presented the argument that sex between all parties was consensual and that the woman’s father pushed his daughter to pursue criminal charges only after she regretted her actions.
Jansen Wint and Amir Riep
According to court records, the woman stated she began having consensual sex with Riep but changed her mind and decided to stop. She told police that Wint walked into the room and Riep asked her if Wint could join in. She then stated that Riep grabbed her by the neck, and began forcing her to have sex. She also said that Riep pinned her down while Wint forced her to have oral sex.
According to court documents, after the act was over, they were accused of forcing the the woman to state her name on camera and state that the sex between them was consensual.
Riep and Wint were arrested on February 11, 2020 and taken to the Franklin County Correction Center. Soon after, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day dismissed both players from the team.
This has been an unfortunate situation for Riep and Wint as they have been fighting this case for three years, with their entire lives, football career, and education put on hold. After the verdict was read, Riep and Wint broke down in tears.

"I'm going to get my life back on track, get my degree and keep on being a law-abiding citizen," Wint said to The Columbus Dispatch.
Wint finished the program in human development at Ohio State in 2020 but the university refused to dish out his degree until the outcome of the trial.
"I'm grateful," Riep said of the verdict. "And you grow through what you go through."
Riep still has two semesters remaining at Ohio State to graduate in sports management. Both young men will now have the opportunity to live life freely and pursue their dreams after living out a nightmare situation.
"The jury did a fantastic job discerning the truth and contrasting what Amir said and what his accuser said," Dan Sabol said. "It took a long time, but the system worked."

Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes Set to Make History in Super Bowl LVII
Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts to make NFL history as the first Black QBs to start in a Super Bowl, paving the way for future generations of Black quarterbacks in the league.
Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts
By: Joshua Martin
For the first time in NFL history we have two African American quarterbacks starting in the Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes is on the cusp of history as his attempts to become the first two-time winner if the Kansas City Chiefs can knock off the Philadelphia Eagles on February 12th at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Jalen Hurts can become only the fourth Black quarterback in league history to bring home the Lombardi trophy, alongside Russel Wilson, Doug Williams and Patrick Mahomes.
Steve McNair with NFL MVP trophy
Despite suffering losses, Steve McNair, the first Black QB to win MVP in ‘23, Cam Newton - MVP ‘15, and Colin Kaepernick have also started Super Bowls.
Doug Williams | Super Bowl XXII via Bettmann
In 1987, Former Grambling State Quarterback Doug Williams led the Washington Redskins to a Super Bowl victory against the Denver Broncos and at the time he was the first ever to start and win the game. His victory paved the way for more quarterbacks of color to gain more opportunities to lead NFL franchises. Opportunities that are still being realized today. In an interview with FOX29/Philadelphia, Williams spoke about progress for Black quarterbacks in the league.
“You got two black quarterbacks in the Super Bowl, to me, I thought we made some progress, but we made a lot more progress last night”
The game has officially changed!! That was evident by 11 squads having Black QBs start week 1, the most ever. 19 different African Americans started games overall during the ‘22 season.
There was a time however, where dynamic, extremely athletic quarterbacks weren’t considered to be winners in this league. Stigmatized as not having the mental fortitude to lead a group of men to the big game and win. Oftentimes being coerced into changing positions.
Mike Vick | Mitchell Layton via Getty Images
Micheal Vick, the first Black quarterback selected number one overall in 2001, dispelled many of those stereotypes. His success made Black quarterbacks more boisterous in their beliefs that they belong and can succeed in this league.
Lamar Jackson | Scott Taetsch via Getty Images
Lamar Jackson was being pushed to switch positions during his pre Draft workouts in 2018. He stood on his in beliefs and let the world know he was a quarterback.
“Wherever I can go as a quarterback, that’s where I’m going. That’s strictly my position. I’m not going to be a wide receiver at all. I’m a quarterback.”
The late first round pick in 2018 backed those words with an electrifying 2019 season which saw him win the MVP that year. To date there have been 25 total Black quarterbacks selected in the first round, with Bryce Young - Alabama, and C.J. Stroud - Ohio State, almost certainly being high draft picks this spring. That's progress!!
I'm proud of my community for finally getting the opportunities and capitalizing!
Hopefully this progress on the field will lead to more Black coaches on the sideline. In a league that's predominately black only 3 coaches were African Americans in ‘22.
One step at a time…

Ruffling Feathers: Why the NBA Needs its Villains
From Shannon Sharpe and Dillon Brooks heated exchange, to Pat Beverly’s broken clock gesture antagonizing All star guard Damion Lillard on his home court, we take a look at some of the NBA’s biggest instigators!

The recent “dust ups” in NBA arenas, from Uncle Shay Shay and Dillon Brooks heated exchange last friday in Crypto.com arena to Pat Bev’s broken clock gesture antagonizing All star guard Damion Lillard on his home court, gave me fond memories of when NBA players cautiously tip-toed the line of on court pest to straight up menace.
The Memphis Grizzlies are currently embracing the rough and braggadocious stereotype that most squads tend to shy away from. The NBA has done well navigating the rough terrain that was caused by the Malice at the Palace and the “NBA is full of Thugs” era. But let’s be honest we all like a little bit of an edge in our sports stars, we applaud it!!

— UNDISPUTED (@undisputed) January 23, 2023
Though Shannon Sharpe did apologize the following Monday, eloquently I might add, on his national syndicated sports show, the emotions that were seen in that moment were real and authentic and quite frankly gave the Lakers enough juice to pull off the improbable victory.
Instigators?? Trash Talkers?? Fire Starters?? Whatever you want to call them, personalities such as these bring a little bit of extra energy, spark that is greatly appreciated. In a much “softer league” compared to when players were just mauling each other, there are few villains of the game who can stir the pot all the same.

Pat Beverly

When I think of Patrick Beverly, I instantly think Irritant. Probably most known for causing havoc than his on court performances, Pat Bev backs down from no man. Though some of his actions have crossed the line, Russel Westbrook injury ‘13, he is the perfect example of a guy you love to have on your team but hate to go against.
Draymond Green
Draymond Green | Credit: Stephen Lam via The Chronicle
This guy gets away with a lot. This off season he made headlines for punching out his own teammate over a trivial dispute. Statistically his impact is minimal but what he brings in energy and intangibles is unmatched. To Be Honest, there's no way the Golden State Warriors without Draymond. However, if there were a ‘Justice League’ of NBA super villains he would be Superman.
Chris Paul

A notoriously dirty player, CP3 is known for getting under the skin of his peers. Not known as a trash talker per se’ but his publicly documented on court antics definitely earn him the title of antagonist. “The Point God” is a top 10 point guard of all time but his prickly personality at times it seems, often thrusts him into some peculiar situations.O yeah, Magic Johnson, the Late Great Bill Russell…

Ed Reed has announced that Bethune-Cookman University will not be ratifying his contract to be the next head coach of their football program. This news comes as a shock to many, as Reed had already been announced as the new head coach and had begun assembling his staff. The university has not shared the reason behind the decision, but it will be important to find a coach who' will be able to lead the Wildcats to success.
Reed, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, had been appointed to lead the University to SWAC prominence. The All-Pro safety expected to use his pro experience to turn around a struggling football program. Lebron James Closes in on All Time NBA Scoring Record | Is He the Greatest?
Lebron James is now trailing only NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, for the NBA’s all time leading scorer title. His resume gives him a strong claim to be called the greatest ever. We discuss it here!
Lebron James Closes in on All Time NBA Scoring Record

By: Joshua Martin
As of January 17th, Lebron James has amassed 38,072 points over his illustrious 19 year NBA career. He is now trailing only NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who is currently the league’s all time leading scorer. Lebron passing Kareem is almost inevitable at this point but there are still many who are unsure where to place Lebron amongst the all time greats.
Let’s see…18x NBA All Star, 4x NBA MVP, 4x NBA Champion, Lebron’s has a literal laundry list of accolades that stretches as far as the Mississippi river. As his accomplishments continue to amass, some would say there is no debate.
However, sports fans love a debate and nothing stirs the emotions more than the never ending question… “Who is the greatest of all time?” With updated resumes here are a few that have a legit claim of G.O.A.T. alongside “King James”
Steph Curry
Wardell Stephen Curry II, a.k.a. the greatest shooter of all time, has single handedly changed the game of basketball forever. Currently playing in his 13th NBA, Steph has 4 Championships, 2 MVPs with one unanimous, and at this moment has amassed 3264 three pointers made and counting. The all time leader in 3 pointers made has impacted the game no like no other. If he continues to add to his already gaudy numbers, his case for GOAT will be even stronger. Wouldn't be surprising if Steph ages gracefully in the league due to shooting prowess, which has him in line to post even more insane statistics.
Michael Jordan
Michael Jeffrey Jordan! Michael Jeffrey Jordan! From the iconic Jordan sneaker line, to his relentless approach to the game, MJ terrorized opponents during his career. The 6 rings along with 6 Finals MVPs. The last shot, that may or may not have been a slight push off. So many iconic moments that anyone with a pulse has heard of “Air” Jordan. 5x MVP, 10x Scoring Champion, 9x All Defensive Team. It's almost blasphemy to compare anyone to him. As time goes on however and resumes start to fill out, maybe MJ’s reign as the GOAT may have some legitimate competition. For the sake of this article maybe.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Kareem Abdul Jabbar, the current NBA all time leading scorer, simply dominated during his 20 year NBA career. He finished as the all time leader in blocks, games played and minutes as well. Born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr., Cap accumulated 6 NBA Championships, A league record 6 MVPs, while also appearing in 19 all star games. Awarded the Presidential medal of Honor by President Barack Obama in 2016, the actor, best selling author and coach has a resume that makes his argument for the greatest of all time legit and will probably stand the test of time. Not to mention his amazing collegiate career.
O yeah, Magic Johnson, the Late Great Bill Russell…
*Sighs*, The debate continues…

Normally, when a player is placed on IR their salary is cut in half, but the Buffalo Bills and the NFL worked out an agreement to pay him his full salary. Which opens a conversation on why NFL athletes should get guaranteed contracts in the future.

Mike Tomlin Has Never Had a Losing Season as an NFL Head Coach

With a victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, Mike Tomlin has made history as the only Head Coach to go 16 consecutive seasons without a losing record. With as much turnaround the NFL experiences with teams having up and down years, Tomlin has proved to be one of the most consistent coaches in history.
The Steelers finish the season at 9-8 after a rough 2-6 start. Despite going 7-2 down the stretch, The Steelers just missed the playoffs this season. Steelers running back, Najee Harris, was very optimistic about the future of the Steelers’ organization after their last win.
"I think that for us to come together through all that adversity that we had early on in the year, for us to finish out the season the way we did, it should be motivation for us," Harris said. "We should be hungry for next year. That's what I was telling a lot of guys on the sideline when I saw the Dolphins won. I just shook Kenny's hand and told him he had a great year. We've gotta do a lot as a team if we wanna be where we're at next year, not waiting for the team to lose, to get in. We got a lot to build on to make the playoffs, but we accomplished not having a losing season from it. We just finished really strong."
Tomlin is one of the few Black Head Coaches in the NFL and has paved the way for other Black coaches to have longevity in the league. 16 straight seasons with no losing records is an amazing accomplishment. Even just coaching 16 years straight as a Head Coach in the NFL is a statement itself. Tomlin deserves all of his flowers.
The Steelers players have a lot of respect for Tomlin and despite them being out of the playoffs, the team wanted to make sure they kept Tomlin’s streak alive. Steelers cornerback, Arthur Maulet, was adamant about securing the victory for Tomlin.
“We’re not about to be his first team to have a losing record,” Maulet said. “We’re not about to be known for that shit. It just can’t happen.”
It’s clear the Steelers have some talent and the future is bright for the organization. With Tomlin’s track record, expect the Steelers to be right back on the winning side next season.

Fisk University Is Making History With HBCU Gymnastics Program
Fisk University, who started their gymnastics program last spring, is set to become the first HBCU to participate in an NCAA women’s gymnastic meet Friday. We discuss it here!
Fisk Gymnastics
By: Adonis Armstrong
Jordynn Cromartie entered her senior year of high school going through a tough decision; a decision many other Black gymnasts have been struggling with for years. The Houston native wanted to go to a predominantly Black college or university, and she wanted to continue to play the sport she loves and committed her whole life to.
Cromartie had one issue; she knew it was a strong possibility she couldn’t do both. While talking to her Uncle during Thanksgiving, Frank Simmons, who is on the Board of Trustees at Fisk University, Cromartie discussed her concerns about going to Fisk, which is a private HBCU located in Nashville, Tennessee with around 1,000 students.
“He and my aunt were like, ‘Oh you haven’t made a decision, you should come to Fisk,’” Cromartie said. “I’m like, ‘Well, they don’t have a gymnastics team.’ To go to a college that doesn’t have what I would be working for forever was crazy to me.” Simmons gave her some hope by saying, “I’ll make it happen.”
Within the span of many weeks, Simmons connected with the founder of Atlanta based, Brown Girls Do Gymnastics owner, Derrin Moore, who has been attempting to drum up support for gymnastics at an HBCU, specifically with Fisk trustees. One trustee was very in tune with Moore’s pitch and generously donated $100,000 if Fisk would adopt the sport.
Fisk University will make history Friday afternoon in Las Vegas at the Orleans Arena becoming the first HBCU to participate in an NCAA women’s gymnastics meet. The Bulldogs are set to compete against Southern Utah, Washington, and North Carolina as part of the inaugural Super 16, an event that includes some tough perennial NCAA powerhouses like Oklahoma, Michigan, and UCLA.
With the emergence and popularity of Olympic champions Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles, the face of gymnastics has been changing. It started with the help of Biles winning in 2012, becoming the first Black woman to win Olympic gold.
Hopefully, in the future more HBCUs will follow in the footsteps of Fisk University and get out of their comfort zones and help expand the opportunity for athletes to choose the legacy with the opportunity to do what they love.

71-point Performance by Donovan Mitchell Prompted a Drug Tested by NBA
Cleveland Cavaliers guard, Donovan Mitchell, had a game for the ages Monday night against the Chicago Bulls. The all star guard scored 71 points that earned him an early morning drug test from the NBA! We discuss it here!

26 year old Cleveland Cavaliers guard, Donovan Mitchell, had a record breaking game in scoring against the Chicago Bulls. January 2nd, Monday night Mitchell torched the Bulls with a whooping 71 point performance followed with 11 assists to complete a double double. He also hauled in 8 rebounds as well. While his memorable night energized basketball fans around the world, the NBA wanted to validate his performance by drug testing him.
Even though the action seems like it’s not random because of the timing, it’s completely legal according to the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association. It reads that players are subjected to four random tests during the year; two during the season and two during the off season. So after the 71 point performance, the league used one of their random tests to make sure Mitchell is an honest player.
Donovan isn’t the first player randomly selected to have a drug test. De’Aron Fox of the Sacramento Kings was subject to one after posting workout videos online. Even Bradly Beal after back to back 50 point games a couple seasons ago had to go through it.
Some fans are arguing that the NBA should test the All NBA guard Luka Doncic, who is having an MVP caliber year himself.

Mitchell was hot from the field shooting 64 percent from the floor, while making 7 3-pointers, and finishing the game out strong in overtime with 13 points to erase a 21-point deficit to get a win against the Bulls. He is just the seventh player in the league’s history to score 70 points in a game. The last player to accomplish the feat of 70 points is Phoenix Suns All star Guard Devin Booker in a loss to the Boston Celtics on March 24, 2017.
Andddd just like that we are drug tested this morning 😂😂😂 https://t.co/LvlbcPDucP

Mitchell joins the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, David Thompson, Elgin Baylor, David Robinson and Devin Booker as the only players to score 70 or more points in an NBA game.

24 year old Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, suffered cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals Monday night. Hamlin collapsed on the field after making a tackle on Tee Higgins in what caused a scary scene, leaving players and fans in tears. Damar’s heartbeat was restored on the field after he was given CPR, and he was transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for further testing and treatment.
The incident happened with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter and Cincinnati leading the game, 7-3. The Buffalo Bills released a statement on Damar’s current condition, stating he is still in critical condition.
Damar remains in the ICU in critical condition with signs of improvement noted yesterday and overnight.

He is expected to remain under intensive care as his health care team continues to monitor and treat him.
In the midst of this horrific situation, there has been a positive as Damar has a GoFundMe set up to fund a toy drive in his hometown of McKees Rocks, Pa. His goal was to raise just $2500 but now the fundraiser has raised over $6 million with over 200,000 donors. What Damar needs most is support and this incident has brought a world of new fans and supporters to his side.
Several Bills players visited Hamlin in the hospital to show support. Fans also gathered outside of the hospital as many were affected by incident.

The incident shows the dark side of the football. Watching a player go down like that on live television is traumatizing for any viewer, or teammates. The game was obviously postponed as of course, the game itself was no longer important, with Hamlin’s health being a priority.
Hamlin was having a breakout season with 91 tackles made this year. Our prayers go out to Hamlin as we hope he can make a full recovery.

Ed Reed is Headed to the SWAC as Head Coach of Bethune-Cookman University
The SWAC just got more exciting as NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion, Ed Reed, has agreed in principle to become the next head football coach at Bethune-Cookman University.
Ed Reed Being Inducted Into the NFL Hall of Fame
By: Omar Cook
Black college has been on the rise with national publicity and some of the nation’s top ranked players committing to some of HBCUs premiere programs. Former NFL legends and coaches such as Deion Sanders, Eddie George, and Hugh Jackson have taken on head coaching jobs at HBCUs bringing a major spotlight to Black colleges. Could this be a new trend?
It looks that way as NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion, Ed Reed, has agreed in principle to become the next head football coach at Bethune-Cookman University. Bethune-Cookman has historically been a powerhouse HBCU program winning six MEAC championships since 2000, but the program has struggled to find its footing since doing the SWAC in 2021.
Bethune-Cookman University Athletics has entered an agreement in principle with Pro Football Hall of Famer Ed Reed to be its 16th head football coach.

Reed will have his hands full in revamping a program that went 2-9 in both of its previous seasons. An advantage that Reed will have is his connections to recruiting in Florida as he has spent the last three seasons at his alma mater, Miami, as a senior football advisor. At 44 years old, Reed will become the school’s 16th Head Coach.
"We are excited to hear that Ed has been named the head football coach at Bethune-Cookman," Miami athletic director Dan Radakovich said. "Ed is one of the best to ever wear a Miami Hurricanes uniform and he has served as a great mentor to our student-athletes the past three years. He will do a tremendous job leading the Wildcats program and the entire Miami family wishes him all the best."
Reed’s football resume includes Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2001, as well as National Defensive Player of the Year by Football News. He was also a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. Reed was a member of the Hurricane's 2001 National Championship team and went on to be 9x pro-bowler.
This is ,major for Black college football as many fans are wondering how the SWAC will continue to remain in the spotlight after Deion Sanders left Jackson State to take the job at Colorado. With Reed’s resume, expect the Wildcats to field a competitive team in the next few years but they will have their hands full in a tough Eastern Division with Florida A&M and a new look Jackson State team.

NBA Players Stand Up For Themselves Against Taking The Covid Vaccine
Several high profile NBA players are catching major media attention after speaking out against taking the vaccine. Their decision could cost them millions, but they are standing tall on their beliefs.
Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac addressed the media September 27, about his personal beliefs on refusing the vaccine.
By: Omar Cook
As the world adjusts to new societal norms, and covid vaccine mandates across different work industries, we are seeing people rebel and risk their careers to stand up for what they believe in. The pandemic is something never before seen in our lifetime and everyone is doing what they feel is necessary to protect themselves. With a history of medical malpractice, lies, and injustice towards Black Americans in this country, it is not uncommon to see people reject the vaccine due to their fears of potential long term side effects.
The NBA has caught major attention after several high profile players have decided to speak out against taking the vaccine. The league currently cannot require players to be vaccinated after the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) rejected the NBA’s proposal for a mandate.
"A vaccine mandate for NBA players would need an agreement with the Players Association," league spokesperson Mike Bass said. "The NBA has made these proposals but the players' union has rejected any vaccination requirement."
Players such as Kyrie Irving, Bradley Beal, Andrew Wiggins, and Jonathan Isaac have been vocal about their beliefs to refuse the vaccine and are standing ten toes down on their decision despite heavy criticism from mainstream media and fans. At a September 27 press conference, Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac articulately stated his reasons for not taking the vaccine.
"I'm not anti-Vax. I'm not anti-medicine. I'm not anti-science," Issac said. "I have nothing but the utmost respect for every health care worker in person in Orlando, and all across the world that has worked tirelessly to keep us safe. My mom has worked in healthcare for a really long time. I thank God I'm grateful that I live in a society where vaccines are possible, and we can protect ourselves and have the means to protect ourselves for the first in the first place."
"I'm not ashamed to say that I'm uncomfortable with taking the vaccine at this time. I think that we're all different. We all come from different places, we've all had different experiences, and hold dear to different beliefs," he said. "What it is that you do with your body when it comes to putting medicine in there should be your choice, free of the ridicule and the opinion of others."
Golden State Warriors star Andrew Wiggins faces the possibility of losing more than $350,000 per game if he is unable to play home games due to San Francisco’s indoor vaccine mandate. It could result in him missing half of the season.
“Back is definitely against the wall, but I’m just going to keep fighting for what I believe,” Wiggins said at media day. “I’m going to keep fighting for what I believe is right. What’s right to one person isn’t right to the other and vice versa.”
His teammate Draymond Green showed support at a press conference stating:
"It's not my place or my business on whether he gets vaccinated or not — it's your own personal choice at the end of the day what you do with your body. It's not my place to tell him what he should or shouldn't do with his. Because he's not going to come tell me what I should do with my body."
Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving was not able to attend the team's media day at Barclays Center on Monday due to New York City's COVID-19 protocols, and he repeatedly declined to address his vaccination status or what his plans were for it in the future. Kyrie has been heavily ridiculed in the media in the past few years for his personal thoughts and beliefs but he has always remained adamant about his thoughts.
Kyrie also faces the possibility of losing half of his expected $36.6 million as will not be able to play in home games in New York due to vaccine mandates.
This is only the beginning of what will be a media frenzy and the ultimate villainization of players who refuse to take the vaccine. The push and pull between being unvaccinated and vaccinated has become extremely political and the freedom of choice is rapidly being taken away, especially for those who would like to keep a job.
At the end of the day, every individual should have the right to choose what to put into their body, and every individual should be responsible for properly doing what is necessary to protect themselves, which includes working out, eating properly, and building up your natural immune system. We have become reliant on medical experts to come save the day with a magical vaccine instead of preaching daily health tips and living a healthier lifestyle. This country has a history of segregation and it is slowly moving from racial to medical segregation as media outlets further push the agenda to get vaccinated. Time will tell what is to come…stand tall on your beliefs.

Usain Bolt's Advice To Sha'Carri Richardson Benefits Every Athlete
Track superstar Usain Bolt gave some sound words of advice for U.S. champion, Sha’Carri Richardson that every athlete could benefit from, “train harder and to be focused.”
By: Omar Cook
Sha’Carri Richardson has been making headlines for quite some time now as she has emerged as track and fields’ biggest stars but it has not come without controversy. After being disqualified from the 2021 Olympics this summer, Richardson was forced to set her attention to her next race at the Prefontaine Classic.
Sha’Carri was very vocal about her previous performances leading up to this highly anticipated race with Jamaican sensations Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, as of course any elite athlete should feel confident about winning. Unfortunately, her cockiness was not taken well publicly after she placed last place in the 100m race taking 9th place in her first race back since her U.S. Olympic trials race.
In early September, Sha’Carri once again hit the track in the Diamond League this time taking 4th place in the 200m. Much improved from 9th place as she begins to find her groove once again.
Track superstar Usain Bolt gave some sound words of advice for the U.S. champion.
I would tell Sha’Carri to train harder and to be focused and not say too much … If you talk that big talk you have to back it up,” Bolt said. “So just train hard and focus on that and try to come back do it and then talk about it.”
Bolt mentioned that the Jamaican women had added incentive to beat Sha’Carri due to her public comments.
“Jamaicans were vexed because she was talking a lot of s**t before the actual race, it is just one of those things,” he said. “Jamaicans don’t like when people talk s**t about us because we are a very proud people. So if you talk about us we are gonna want you to back it up. It definitely gave those women the extra push [to win.]”
Bolt has delt with athletes that have been outwardly vocal in the past as he went head to head with Justin Gatlin in the 2016 Olympics.
“That was my thing with Justin Gatlin — because he’s the one that was always talking — so that gives me that energy like, ‘All right you think you’re gonna win let’s go!’ So it does give you that extra boost to wanna beat that person,” he said of Gatlin. Gatlin finished second to Bolt in the 2016 Olympics.
Sha’Carri Richardson is definitely one of track’s hottest stars as she currently has run the 6th fastest time in history in the 100m in 10.72 seconds, but Richardson will have to deal with being humbled for the time being. Like the old saying goes, if you talk the talk you gotta walk the walk. Richardson will definitely be back on top but at this moment, her talking needs to be done with results.
