Oscar-winning actress and award-winning producer Regina King will portray the trailblazing political icon Shirley Chisholm in an upcoming Netflix film titled Shirley. The film will chronicle her journey from becoming the first Black woman elected to Congress in 1963, representing New York’s 12th district, to her groundbreaking run for the United States presidency in 1972—the first Black woman to seek a major party’s nomination for President, running as a Democrat.
Netflix recently released the official trailer, showcasing the unforgettable moment when, in front of an all-Black audience, Chisholm announced her run for the presidency on January 25th, 1972.
“I am not the candidate of black America, although I am Black and proud. I am not the candidate of the women’s movement of this country, although I am a woman and I’m equally proud of that. I am not the candidate of any political policies or fat cats or special interests. I stand here now, without endorsements from any big-name politicians or celebrities or any other kind of prop. I do not intend to offer you the tired clichés that have too long been accepted as part of our political life. I am the candidate of the people of America. ”
However, the trailer only provides a small glimpse into her powerful story.
“SHIRLEY tells the story of the first Black Congresswoman and political icon, Shirley Chisholm, and her trailblazing run for president of the U.S. It chronicles her audacious, boundary-breaking 1972 presidential campaign.”
King has long admired Chisholm’s spirit, spending nearly 15 years working with her sister Reina King to develop the movie.

“It was always a little disheartening for Reina and me to have so many people over the years of our lives not know who Shirley Chisholm was. What she did was so pioneering. She was a true maverick, and, you know, we use this term all the time, but she was a true first.”
American screenwriter John Ridley signed on to direct and write the film, along with King. His sister Reina King, Anikah McLaren, and Elizabeth Haggard are tabbed as producers. Shirley will also star Terrance Howard, the late Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Amirah Van, and more.
Shirley is set to be released this spring on Netflix on March 22, 2024.

Though untitled, this latest special will be Dave’s seventh with Netflix. A successful run that began in 2017 when he released four specials that year. The Age of Spin, Deep in the Heart of Texas, Equanimity and The Bird Revelation were then followed by Sticks and Stones in 2019 and The Closer in 2021. The latter special gained Chappelle a Grammy for Best Comedy Album earlier this year.
The Closer also landed the hot-button funny man in a bit of a controversy with members of the LGBTQ+ community and the many claiming that the comedian's jokes were transphobic. Netflix continued to stand behind Dave claiming that the special was never meant to cause harm.
“With ‘The Closer,’ we understand that the concern is not about offensive-to-some content but titles which could increase real world harm. Last year, we heard similar concerns about 365 Days and violence against women. While some employees disagree, we have a strong belief that content on screen doesn’t directly translate to real-world harm.”
It remains to be seen when and where the special was shot. Dave has most recently been touring the country as a part of this fall’s Dave Chappelle Live comedy tour.

Chris Rock's comedy special Selective Outrage addresses the Oscars slap incident and tackles topics such as cancel culture, and more. We discuss it here!
Chris Rock Netflix Comedy Special: Selective Outrage
By: Joshua Martin
Finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for!!
It's been almost a year since the infamous Oscars slap that stunned the entire entertainment world and had social media in an uproar for almost a week afterwards. Thousands of think pieces surfaced about toxic masculinity, protecting your spouse from an verbal assault and also when joking goes too far.
On March 4th, With the entire world eagerly anticipating Chris Rock’s response, he finally addressed what really happened in his Netflix Live Comedy Special: SELECTIVE OUTRAGE. In this special Rock dives into how his life has changed since the incident, the Kardashains, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, abortion, cancel culture and more.
“Y’all know what happened to me, getting smacked by Suge Smith.” “It still hurts. I got ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears.”
Despite an immense amount of pressure to open up, Rock was adamant on his stance of not being a victim. Declining to go on national talk shows to dissect the incident.
“But I’m not a victim, baby.” “You’ll never see me on Oprah or Gayle crying. You will never see it. Never gonna happen. … No, I took that hit like [Manny] Pacquiao.”
Broadcasting live from Baltimore at the Hippodrome Theatre, the actor/comedian later revealed that the title of the special was inspired by the slap. Proceeding to berate the Smith’s and their highly publicized relationship.
“But Will Smith practices selective outrage.” “‘Cause everybody knows what the fuck happened. Everybody that really knows, knows I had nothing to do with that shit. I didn’t have any entanglements”
Alluding to the “Red Table Talk” episode featuring Will and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, where she admitted to having an affair. Continuing, Rock added he tried to reach out to Smith, saying that, “She hurt him way more than he hurt me.”
Dressed in all white wearing a Prince necklace, Rock explained why he decided not to do anything after the slap. “Because I got parents. I was raised. And you know what my parents taught me? Don’t fight in front of white people.”
Smith apologized via an instagram post a day after the Oscars and later an additional apology on camera.
Did Chris Rock’s stand up comedy special Selective Outrage live up to the hype??
While not holding up to the standards that Rock has set throughout his career, check out BIGGER and BLACKER - 1999, Selective Outrage deserves a 6 out of 10. With “10” being Eddie’s Delirious or peak Pryor/Bernie and “1” being anything Dane Cook.
Stuttering on a key joke, misplacing Concussion with Emancipation, and the barrage of B-words thrown at the Smith’s will leave a sour taste in your mouth. Also identifying as “BROKE” despite being incredibly rich.
In his biggest public performance since ‘22, Rock did what only a handful of comedians have the ability to do. Take a horrific, traumatizing situation and make light of it for the sake of comedy.
