40-year-old Irvin Cartagena, of Aibonito, Puerto Rico, was sentenced Friday for his role in the fentanyl-laced heroin death of “The Wire” actor Michael K. Williams. Williams overdosed in his Brooklyn apartment, dying hours after a security camera caught him purchasing heroin from Cartagena in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams after Cartagena pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute drugs back in April.

I am very sorry for my actions. When we sold the drugs, we never intended for anyone to lose their life. - Cartagena
— ABC News

Prosecutors were pushing for a sentence of at least 12 years, while the court’s Probation Department recommended a 20-year sentence due to his extensive criminal history. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams shared in a statement that those who participated in the sale of the drugs were aware that someone else also died from it prior to this tragedy. The conglomerate continued to sale the illicit drug even after the death of Michael K. Williams. Cartagena faced a mandatory minimum of five years in prison and could have faced up to 40 years behind bars; however, Abrams deemed the recommendations too severe.

This sentence, while severe, is sufficient but not greater than necessary.
— Abrams

Williams, who was 54 when he passed away in September of 2021, famously portrayed Omar Little in HBO’s hit crime drama “The Wire” which ran from 2002 to 2008. In addition, Williams starred in films and other TV series such as “Boardwalk Empire”, the Netflix drama series “When They See Us” and “Lovecraft Country” in which he won a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Halle Bailey recently demonstrated the importance of honoring those who paved the way for you.

On May 8th, the world premiere of The Little Mermaid was celebrated by many, with several famous celebrities walking down the ocean-blue carpet and expressing their views on the movie, including its lead, Bailey.

During her conversations with various media sources regarding young girls and representation, she stated, “I hope that they just know they are worthy. And we deserve to be in these spaces, and I hope that they see themselves and be on the screen. I’m just grateful to be here. There were women before me like Brandy and Anika Rose, who really were the blueprint for me to even be able to be here today. So, I’m just taking this moment all in. I’m so excited.”

Prior to Bailey's well-deserved role as the first Black princess in a live-action Disney remake, a number of talented and soulful singers had already paved the way. In 1997, Brandy made history as the first Black woman to portray a princess for the renowned entertainment company in the film Cinderella, which also featured Whitney Houston.

After a span of twelve years, another remarkable vocalist left an indelible mark in history. Actress Rose made her debut as Disney's inaugural Black animated princess in The Princess and the Frog. She also graced the premiere of The Little Mermaid and had some kind words to say about Bailey.

During her interview with ET, Rose expressed her thoughts on portraying a Disney princess by saying, “It’s very intense in a good way… She’s ready. She knows what to do. She knows who she is. She’s very comfortable within herself. She has a kind spirit, and I don’t think that’s gonna change.”

Black representation matters in films, I believe Halle will have the same impact as the late great Chadwick Boseman in Black Panther. Which will draw huge crowds of Black girls who can see themselves through Bailey on screen.

Much success to Halle and continue to be strive to open the gate for more Black princess in entertainment. The Little Mermaid will drop in theaters on May 26.

As writers across the entertainment industry go on strike, major support from entertainers and fans have poured in.

Hip-Hop icon Snoop Dogg, shared his opinions on the current streaming models that have led to the Writers Guild of America initiating a strike in order to secure better compensation. On Wednesday, May 3 that the California rapper participated in a panel at the Milken Institutes’ Global Conference, according to Variety.

“The writers are striking because [of] streaming. They can’t get paid. Because when it’s on the platform, it’s not like in the box office. I don’t understand how the f**k you get paid off of that s**t” Snoop stated. “Somebody explain to me how you can get a billion streams and not get a million dollars? That’s the main gripe with a lot of us artists is that we do major numbers, but it don’t add up to the money. Like where the f**k is the money?”

The strike makes the first walkout in over 15 years and it could have a huge impact on the entertainment industry over the next year if not resolved properly.
The WGA went on strike after unionized workers raised concerns about inadequate pay with the growth of streaming. Despite negotiations between the writers’ representation and a trade association for the Hollywood studios, they failed to reach an agreement, leading to the call for a walkout.

As a result of the ongoing strike, several popular TV shows in Hollywood, such as "Abbott Elementary" starring Quinta Brunson, and 50 Cent's "Power Book III: Raising Kanan", have halted production.

There is definitely a major need for artists with major followings and platforms to support the writers. In this day of AI and advanced technology, it’s important to protect the true creators of this world and support them as they strike for better changes.

After suffering a medical emergency three weeks ago, actor Jamie Foxx continues to remain hospitalized.

Corinne Foxx, daughter of actor Jamie Foxx, revealed on April 12 that her father had suffered a "medical complication" the day before. The incident happened while Foxx was shooting for the Netflix film "Back in Action" with Cameron Diaz in Georgia. Jamie Foxx is known for his roles in various popular films and shows, including Ray, Sleepless, Law Abiding Citizen, The Jamie Foxx Show, and more!

According to insider sources, neither Jamie Foxx nor his daughter will be involved in the upcoming season of FOX's popular music lyric game show, Beat Shazam despite it being scheduled to start production shortly after Foxx's hospitalization.

"Jamie will not be on this season of Beat Shazam. We're told filming starts today, with a new host. We're also told Corinne, who DJs on the show, will not be on as well—she's been a fixture at the hospital in Atlanta by her dad's side," TMZ noted.

"Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery," Corinne stated, and asked for "privacy during this time."

A few friends in the entertainment industry have expressed their support for Jamie as he goes through this process.

"I think the dope thing is that he's getting better in the situation, and, you know, everybody's prayers, everybody's love, energy, all that stuff is seen and felt. So, in this case, you just want the guy to get out of the situation and to get back on it... So my love, synergy, and energy goes out to him. He’s needed. He’s necessary. I know he knows that, and I know that he feels that because it’s been an outcry and outpour of support in his regard” Kevin Hart stated to per Essentially Sports.

We wish nothing but the best for Jamie Foxx as he goes through this recovery.

50 Cent Purchases Massive Facility to Create G-Unit Studios

50 Cent purchases of a massive facility to create G-Unit Studios is set to shake up the entertainment industry. We discuss it here!

247 Live Culture

By: Adonis Armstrong

Hip-hop mogul and businessman Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson has made headlines for purchasing a massive 985,000-square-foot facility. He took to his instagram to show the early development of the facility that will be transformed into G-Unit Studios, a multi-purpose complex for music production, television, and film. The move is not entirely surprising, given 50 Cent's deep ties to the music and entertainment industries. He has previously launched successful ventures in both areas, including his record label G-Unit Records and his production company G-Unit Films.

GLG🚦GreenLightGang G-unit film &Tv 💣BOOM 💨 I need room to work 🤷🏽‍♂️ I don’t miss 🎯 📺will never be the same.
— 50 Cent

G-Unit Studios is set to become a hub for creative talent, with state-of-the-art recording and production facilities, sound stages, and office space for writers, producers, and directors.

The new facility will undoubtedly give 50 Cent and his team more opportunities to expand their reach and take on new projects. In addition to music production and film, the complex will reportedly be used for television production and other creative endeavors.

Many are applauding 50 Cent's move as a positive step, which has the potential to create hundreds of jobs and provide a much-needed boost to the local economy. The transformation of the facility into G-Unit Studios is expected to take several months, and the finished product is sure to be impressive. With 50 Cent at the helm, there's no doubt that G-Unit Studios will become a major player in the entertainment industry, bringing new opportunities and possibilities to the wider world of music and film.

Last month, 50 Cent expressed regret about his success at Starz. Over the past decade, the network has aired several hit series produced by 50 Cent, including Power and Black Mafia Family. On Twitter last week, 50 Cent reflected on his success and admitted that he wishes he had created his TV universe at a different network. He also announced that he no longer plans to adapt any more BMF spin-offs or sell any other shows to Starz. According to 50 Cent, he has the top TV shows in African American and Latina households, but he regrets that he worked with the wrong people.

I wish nothing but the best for 50 Cent as he continues to be the great mogul as he continues to strive for the culture.

Actor, activist, and singer, Harry Belafonte passed away at 96 years old.

On Tuesday morning (April 25), Harry Belafonte's longtime spokesperson Ken Sunshine announced to NBC News that Belafonte had passed away due to congestive heart failure.

Harry Belafonte, who was born in Harlem in 1927, is known as the "King of Calypso" and remembered for his unique style of folk music that reflected his Black and Caribbean heritage. He gained popularity as a musician in his late 20s and early 30s, attracting an international following with his critically acclaimed studio album "Calypso" in 1956. This was also his second album to reach No. 1 on the Top Pop Albums chart, according to Billboard.

In 1958, Harry Belafonte, the performer and activist, addressed a gathering of young people at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. during a march for integration.

During a period when segregation was prevalent and Black representation in the entertainment industry was scarce, Harry Belafonte's rise to fame was a significant achievement. Although other Black entertainers such as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald had broken racial barriers before him, Belafonte's impact was unprecedented, and he enjoyed unparalleled success. For a time, he was the biggest name in music, transcending racial divides and appealing to audiences of all backgrounds.

Harry Belafonte's success extended beyond music recordings; he was also a highly successful concert performer. With his good looks and natural charisma, he captivated audiences with powerful renditions of folk songs from various cultures around the world. His repertoire included lively calypsos such as "Matilda," work songs like "Lead Man Holler," and poignant ballads like "Scarlet Ribbons." By 1959, Belafonte had become the highest-paid Black performer in history, securing lucrative contracts for performances in Las Vegas, the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, and the Palace in New York.

Harry Belafonte - Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) (Live)

In addition to his musical achievements, Harry Belafonte was actively engaged in civil rights, film, and activism. In 1960, he made history as the first Black artist to receive an Emmy Award for his work on the musical special "Tonight With Belafonte," as reported by NBC News.

Harry Belafonte started to intensify his involvement with the civil rights movement, collaborating with Martin Luther King Jr. NBC News reported that the two first met in 1956 at an event in New York City for activists supporting reform in Montgomery, Alabama. Belafonte also worked alongside Senator John F. Kennedy during his presidential campaign in 1960, and after Kennedy's election, the 96-year-old activist acted as an intermediary between Attorney General Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1963, Belafonte famously posted bail to release Martin Luther King Jr. from jail in Alabama, during a crucial time for the civil rights movement. Over time, Belafonte's relationship with Martin and his wife, Coretta Scott King, evolved into a close and cherished bond built on trust. Following Martin's assassination, Belafonte was appointed as the executor of his estate.

In her 1969 autobiography "My Life With Martin Luther King, Jr.," Coretta Scott King expressed her admiration for Harry Belafonte. She wrote, “Whenever we got into trouble, or when tragedy struck, Harry has always come to our aid, his generous heart wide open.”

By: Joshua Martin

Cue the Martin theme song!!

Martin!! Martin!! Martin!! You So Crazy!!

Martin Lawrence has been an entertainment mainstay since bursting onto the scene in the early 90’s with his raunchy comedic style and his burgeoning film career. His breakthrough came as the star of his own self entitled sitcom, Martin, before joining forces with Will Smith to form the long running Bad Boys film franchise. He’s also starred in familiar favorites such as Boomerang, Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, Life with Eddie Murphy and the late great Bernie Mac, House Party with Kid-N-Play, Big Momma’s House and many other major productions.

We’ve literally seen this man grow from a comedian to a Television and film superstar, and now after an illustrious career, Marty Mart, as he is affectionately called, will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of fame.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, April 11th, via Ana Martinez’s Twitter account, who acts as the Hollywood Walk of Fame Producer & and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Vice President of Media Relations.

Last summer, the former Def Comedy Jam host found out he would be a part of the 2023 class and expressed his excitement via instagram.

Though recently receiving some well deserved flowers with the Martin Reunion Show, the NAACP Image Award winner doesn't seem to be slowing down. Lawrence will star alongside Chloe Bailey and Anthony Mackie in the animated film Sneaks, which is set to be finished in 2024. The star studded cast also includes Roddy Ricch, Ella Mai, Swae Lee, Macy Gray, Quavo, Keith david and Laurence Fishburne.

We also will see our favorite buddy cops return to the big screen for Bad Boys 4!!

Variety reported in January that the latest sequel is in early pre-production and will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah the duo who directed “Bad Boys for Life” which accumulated over $420 million at the worldwide box office.

Lawrence will take a short break from filming the highly anticipated sequel to Bad Boys, with long time friend Will Smith, to attend the event.

Being born in the late 1900’s, Martin Lawrence has definitely been a huge part of my coming of age. It's good to see the Comedic legend receive the accolades he righteously deserves. Congrats to the goat!!

Hulu Set to Produce Documentary on 'Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told'

Hulu announced the release of Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never documentary, executive produced by Jermaine Dupri. We discuss it here!

247 Live Culture

Freaknik 1996

By: Adonis Armstrong

Hulu’s Freaknik documentary is a highly anticipated upcoming release that will explore the history of the legendary spring break celebration that took place in Atlanta, Georgia during the 1980s and 1990s. This cultural phenomenon was a pivotal moment in African American history, and its impact on music, fashion, and social culture cannot be overstated. With its release, Hulu promises to bring viewers a fascinating and in depth look at the history of this historic event.

Freaknik was started in the mid-’80s in Atlanta as a small picnic during the spring break season for students of local Historically Black Colleges and Universities. By the 1990s, the celebration had outperformed its humble beginnings as a picnic and advanced into a massive street party for what it is remembered for today.

The documentary will feature interviews with the key players who helped to create and shape the Freaknik experience, including organizers, attendees, and musicians. It will also include footage from the actual events, as well as archive material that has never been seen before. Viewers can expect to see rare behind the scenes footage of some of the biggest names in music, such as Outkast, Jermaine Dupri, and Lil Jon, as they performed at Freaknik.

One of the most exciting aspects of the documentary is its focus on the music that was such an integral part of the Freaknik experience. The event was known for its party atmosphere, and the music played a significant role in creating that vibe. The documentary promises to provide a detailed exploration of the music scene during the Freaknik era, featuring interviews with musicians who were there and showcasing some of the most iconic songs of the time.

By 1998, the Associated Press reported Atlanta Committee for Black College Spring Break should no longer welcome Freaknik, citing “sexual attacks, public safety concerns, and violence against women.” Still, the nostalgia is clear in multiple present-day endeavors to reboot the euphoric event, from celebrities and people hosting Freaknik themed birthday parties to celebrations and festivals .

Hulu’s ‘Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told’ will be one of the best documentaries ever in my eyes. To see and relive one of the best black experiences of all time should do record breaking numbers. But, on the other side when you go to far back in the past it usually brings up baggage that should have been left behind. All in all whether you were there or not, this documentary promises to transport you back in time and give you a front-row seat to one of the most significant events in African American history.

At 11 a.m Police responded to an emergency phone call that came from inside a downtown Manhattan apartment, according to reports. The altercation was a domestic dispute involving a 30 year old woman.

“The victim informed police she was assaulted,” a spokesperson for the NYPD said in a statement. “Officers placed the 33-year-old male into custody without incident. The victim sustained minor injuries to her head and neck and was removed to an area hospital in stable condition.”

According to The Associated Press Majors was released from custody Saturday. Majors is already beginning to see repercussions from the incident as Majors’s U.S. Army campaign was pulled from television, Monday. The Army was set to return with its “Be All You Can Be” with Majors as the lead.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the U.S. Army Enterprise Marketing Office released a statement:

“The U.S. Army is aware of the arrest of Jonathan Majors, and we are deeply concerned by the allegations surrounding his arrest. While Mr. Majors is innocent until proven guilty, prudence dictates that we pull our ads until the investigation into these allegations is complete.”

As more details arise, Majors will look to clear his name, but this situation could not have come at a worse time as Creed III continues to make waves.

Fans of the iconic '90s sitcom All That and its spin-off movie Good Burger were thrilled to learn that a long-awaited sequel, Good Burger 2, is officially in the works. Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, who starred in both the TV show and the original movie, made the announcement March 17 on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell confirms ‘Good Burger 2’ on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.’

"Good Burger" first hit theaters in 1997 and became an instant classic. The film followed the adventures of two hapless fast-food employees, Dexter (played by Thompson) and Ed (played by Mitchell), as they try to save their beloved restaurant from being turned into a Mondo Burger franchise. The movie was based on a recurring sketch from All That, which was one of the most popular shows on Nickelodeon in the '90s.

Since the release of Good Burger, both Thompson and Mitchell have gone on to successful careers in the entertainment industry. Thompson, who has been a cast member on Saturday Night Live since 2003, has become one of the most beloved and recognizable comedians on TV. Mitchell has also continued to work in film and television, appearing in projects like Mystery Men, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Game Shakers.

Details about the plot of "Good Burger 2" are still limited, but fans are already speculating about what they might see in the new movie. Some are hoping that the film will feature cameos from other All That and Good Burger alumni, while others are wondering if Dexter and Ed will have to save their restaurant from a new, even more formidable foe.

Regardless of what the plot of Good Burger 2 ends up being, one thing is clear: fans are more excited than ever to see Thompson and Mitchell back on screen together. The chemistry between the two actors was a big part of what made the original Good Burger so beloved, and fans are eager to see that magic recreated in the sequel.

It remains to be seen when Good Burger 2 will hit theaters or streaming services, but fans will be counting down the days until they can see Dexter and Ed back in action. Until then, we just have to satisfy ourselves by re-watching the original movie and reliving the glory days of '90s Nickelodeon.

Tyler Perry has been a staple on BET for years, with hit shows like House of Payne and The Oval, so it’s no surprise that news broke this week of Perry being in conversations to potentially purchase Paramount Global’s majority stake in BET, giving him ownership of the network.

Tyler Perry is currently signed to a deal with Paramount which is expected to end soon, and this new deal with BET would give Perry full control over a network that includes BET, BET+, and VH1. In 2000, Paramount, which was formerly Viacom, acquired BET for $2.3 billion.

Variety confirmed that mogul Byron Allen is also looking to pursue purchasing the network. Allen and his company, Allen Media Group, have been very active in the last 3 years investing over $1 billion to acquire 27 ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox affiliates.

Perry and BET have been in partnership for almost 2 decades as BET assisted Perry with funding his debut feature film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Perry also has multiple other shows on BET including Sisters, Ruthless, Assisted Living, and Zatima.

BET was founded on January 25, 1980 by media entrepreneur Robert L. Johnson, with the vision to reach African American audiences through cable TV, and that vision has been successful.

Chris Rock Netflix Comedy Special: Selective Outrage

By: Joshua Martin

Finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for!!

It's been almost a year since the infamous Oscars slap that stunned the entire entertainment world and had social media in an uproar for almost a week afterwards. Thousands of think pieces surfaced about toxic masculinity, protecting your spouse from an verbal assault and also when joking goes too far.

On March 4th, With the entire world eagerly anticipating Chris Rock’s response, he finally addressed what really happened in his Netflix Live Comedy Special: SELECTIVE OUTRAGE. In this special Rock dives into how his life has changed since the incident, the Kardashains, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, abortion, cancel culture and more.

Will Smith slaps Chris Rock
Y’all know what happened to me, getting smacked by Suge Smith.” “It still hurts. I got ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears.
— Chris Rock

Despite an immense amount of pressure to open up, Rock was adamant on his stance of not being a victim. Declining to go on national talk shows to dissect the incident.

Jada Pickett and Will Smith
But I’m not a victim, baby.” “You’ll never see me on Oprah or Gayle crying. You will never see it. Never gonna happen. … No, I took that hit like [Manny] Pacquiao.
— Chris Rock

Broadcasting live from Baltimore at the Hippodrome Theatre, the actor/comedian later revealed that the title of the special was inspired by the slap. Proceeding to berate the Smith’s and their highly publicized relationship.

But Will Smith practices selective outrage.”  “‘Cause everybody knows what the fuck happened. Everybody that really knows, knows I had nothing to do with that shit. I didn’t have any entanglements
— Chris Rock

Alluding to the “Red Table Talk” episode featuring Will and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, where she admitted to having an affair. Continuing, Rock added he tried to reach out to Smith, saying that, “She hurt him way more than he hurt me.”

Chris Rock

Dressed in all white wearing a Prince necklace, Rock explained why he decided not to do anything after the slap. “Because I got parents. I was raised. And you know what my parents taught me? Don’t fight in front of white people.”

Smith apologized via an instagram post a day after the Oscars and later an additional apology on camera.

Did Chris Rock’s stand up comedy special Selective Outrage live up to the hype??

While not holding up to the standards that Rock has set throughout his career, check out BIGGER and BLACKER - 1999, Selective Outrage deserves a 6 out of 10. With “10” being Eddie’s Delirious or peak Pryor/Bernie and “1” being anything Dane Cook.

Stuttering on a key joke, misplacing Concussion with Emancipation, and the barrage of B-words thrown at the Smith’s will leave a sour taste in your mouth. Also identifying as “BROKE” despite being incredibly rich.

In his biggest public performance since ‘22, Rock did what only a handful of comedians have the ability to do. Take a horrific, traumatizing situation and make light of it for the sake of comedy.
