R&B legend and eight-time Grammy award winner Lauryn Hill announced on Tuesday a 17-day tour for her seminal album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Joining her on stage to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the iconic release will be the Fugees, the Hip Hop group she was a part of in the 90s. The group last reunited at the 2023 Roots Picnic in June; this will be the first tour for the Fugees in years. The tour is set to begin in September with the latest date slated for November. The iconic group will hit stadiums and arenas all across the world including Brooklyn’s Barclays, and the KIA Forum in Los Angeles with international stops in Austria and New Zealand.
“The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is and was a love song to my parents, my family, my people, my musical and cultural forebears, my teachers, my loves, my Creator. I wrote love songs and protest songs — (still love songs) about the subjects and interests that inspired and moved me. I was confident that what inspired me would resonate with an audience that had been led to believe that songs of that kind could only live in the past.”
Her influence on stars in both past and present is undeniable!
“Lauryn Hill opened a lot of doors for us. She’s how I got my start. Before I even got signed, when people asked me to sing to them, I would sing Lauryn Hill’s version of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.” I sang that song for Pharrell. I sang that song for Jimmy Iovine. It’s how I got my first record deal.”
“This album sets the bar very high for me. I can take away so much from this body of work — most importantly, feeling what I’m singing about and connecting it to people’s lives in a real way.”
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was the first and only solo album the songstress created. In 1999, the album earned 10 Grammy nominations. The “Ex-Factor” singer also won 5 Grammys, including Album of the Year, which was the first time a hip-hop artist won the award. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill shattered the glass ceiling for Black women in the music industry, an environment usually dominated by men. While the R&B soul legend never released a sophomore album, her work has continued to shape culture and music. Her upcoming tour will allow old and new fans to re-experience the influential, history-making album.
Presale tickets will be available for Citi cardholders beginning Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. local time until Aug. 24 at 10 p.m. local time. Tickets will be available for public sale Aug 25 at 10 a.m. local time. Check out the tour dates below!

If you’ve been waiting on some new good music the wait is over! On August 10th, we were granted an exclusive sneak peek into Reason's brand-new masterpiece, ‘Porches,’ during an electrifying listening party that lit up South LA. If the name Reason isn't ringing any bells, allow us to introduce you to this bonafide lyricist. Back in January 2016, he came onto the scene with his inaugural mixtape, "The Free Album," grabbing the attention of hip-hop heads far and wide. And just a few months later, in May, he dropped yet another sonic gem titled "There You Have It," showcasing his mind-blowing rap prowess.
But here's where destiny truly smiled upon Reason: his fateful encounter with the visionary Moosa Tiffith, his manager. Brace yourself for this: Reason teamed up with musical titans like Mozzy and Sjava for Kendrick Lamar's chart-topping hit, ‘Black Panther: The Album.’ Talk about a come up! Riding high on that collaboration's success, Reason scored an invitation to join the ranks of Top Dawg Entertainment, a powerhouse collective housing luminaries like Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q.
Fast forward to today, where Reason finds himself at the helm of his very own album listening party, signed under one of LA's top-tier record labels. ‘Porches’ is more than an album; it's a tapestry manufactured from smoky soul beats and vibrant narratives. But then again, what else can you expect from the lyrical genius that is Reason? With guest appearances from the likes of London Moet, Ray Vaughn, Doechii, and more, we knew we were in for a night drenched in fantastic melodies and soul-lifting vibes.
Reason shares a heartfelt speech during the listening party for his new album ‘Porches’ on August 10, 2023.
As custom cocktails named after album tracks flowed the bodies in the crowd swayed to the intoxicating rhythm of Reason's new masterpiece. And just when the energy was at its peak, Reason made a spectacular entrance into the celebration. He began by expressing heartfelt gratitude for everyone's presence, setting the stage for the musical journey that Porches was about to take us on.
When he unleashed the track "FTN!" featuring Baby Tate and Junii, the entire venue came alive. The silky R&B vibes and the mesmerizing melody crafted by the hands of Hollywood Cole captured hearts and transported us back to the golden days of the early 2000s. Paying homage to his cherished California roots, Reason unveiled "Family First," a collaboration with Kalan.Frfr, SiR, and Zacari. This masterpiece, produced by the talented Supah Mario, not only showcased their adoration for their loved ones but also put their naysayers in their place.
After treating us to a few more musical treasures, Reason took the stage once again, this time to honor the friends and family who stood by his side throughout this artistic journey. With a heart full of gratitude, he presented them with bottles of Herradura tequila, a symbol of their collective triumph. ‘Porches’ isn't just an album; it's a rare gem that boasts impeccable production, lyrics dripping with substance, and an overarching message that resonates deeply. If you're on the hunt for music that's as pleasing to the ears as it is to the soul, look no further—this masterpiece is now available on all streaming platforms.

The legendary DJ Kay Slay name was forever stamped on 105th Street and First Avenue in his hometown of Harlem, New York this past Sunday. A celebration took place on the late hip-hop pioneer’s old stomping ground where a large group of family and friends filled up the streets between 109th and 105th street and First Avenue in NYC. Some of Kay Slay’s peers were also in attendance including Busta Rhymes, Terror Squad, Papoose and more.
DJ Kay Slay died last April due to complications with COVID-19. He began his hip-hop career as a graffiti artist under the name “Spade”. Once graffiti became less popular within hip-hop culture, Kay Slay turned to DJing where his career went to another level.
Kay Slay rose to prominence following the release of his first major label project entitled Streetsweepers Vol. 1 on Columbia Records. That project allowed him to play a part in the rise of some of the most iconic MCs in Hip Hop. 50 Cent, Dipset, Kendrick Lamar and so many more were able to hop on Kay Slay’s mixtapes, get radio play and open shows for him.
Slay’s impact still lives on till this day. Papoose took to Instagram to honor his longtime friend and collaborator as well.
During a heartfelt speech to the crowd, Papoose let listeners know how much of an impact Kay Slay had on his career. The head of Hip-Hop at TuneCore also dropped a release date for his latest project.
“Slay gave me my first opportunity. Now that I’m head of Hip-Hop at TuneCore I’m going to make sure that happens. September 15th, we releasing 200 Deep.”

By: Omar Cook
Compton artist 1TakeOcho dropped his new EP titled Ocho III. 1TakeOcho has been consistently dropping heat since his first project Ocho.
“The name of the project started when I dropped the first Ocho EP. I didn’t know what else to call it so I kept it simple and used my name. I wanted to drop this EP because it’s been almost 9 months since my last project dropped and in between that I dropped one single which was “Love” ft. my guys Griff Tyler and Xian Bell. It was time for me to drop some more content, build my catalog for people, and get heard some more. And also it’s the summer!”
1TakeOcho has set a high standard for himself and his fans by releasing top quality music with consistency. You can hear the growth from project to project as he pours his real life into the lyrics.
“This particular EP shows a lot of growth in my music as far as the quality of the music as well as the videos I’ll be putting out for it. The cover art is me with my college degree, my graduation cap, a football, and a mic which symbolizes my journey in life. I recently just finished school while working a job and pursuing my music career. I just want to motivate people and let them know that anything is possible and forget all the excuses. As long as you put the work in, stay dedicated, passionate, and consistent, everything will fall in place for you.”

1TakeOcho has already dropped 3 videos to accompany his EP for his tracks “Homebody”, “Different”, and “Love”.
“The quality of music and the visuals for it is what separates it from my previous stuff. Although my previous project “Undeniable” had good quality, the goal is to outwork yesterday. Or in other words outwork yourself and your previous work. I feel like that’s what I’m doing.”
1TakeOcho already has plans to continue to release new music and visuals and is establishing himself as one of the top rising artists on the West Coast. With a solid mix of R and B and rap, this project has a track for just about any mood.

From albums alone, we got an amazing amount of range from Tyler, the Creator’s “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST”, H.E.R’s “Back Of My Mind”, Doja Cat’s “Planet Her” and even Justine Skye’s “Space & Time”. In regards to singles, Megan Thee Stallion’s “Thot Sh*t” and Jazmine Sullivan’s “Tragic” allowed us to go from screaming “We Outside!” to reflecting on time that needs to be reclaimed.
With all of this in mind, June’s releases have quite the competition. However, July started off with “Wasting Time”, a collaboration between Brent Faiyaz and Drake that was produced by The Neptunes, so it already seems as though this month will have some great contenders.

G Herbo, “25” - July 2
Kicking off the first “New Music Friday” of the month is G Herbo with the release of his LP “25”. Herbo told Complex that the project, pronounced as “Two Five”, celebrates both his age and the significance of the resultant of “2+5”; he states that seven signifies “the guardian”. “25” also pays homage to the people in his life who did not make it to 25, such as his brother and a close friend. The 19-track project, which features artists such as Gunna, 21 Savage and Polo G, comes over a year after “PTSD”.

The accolades from this mix landed him a call from Fat Joe, who vied to use the mix for a song. The song, called “Sunshine” came out in January and features DJ Khaled. Although the EP is not slated to come out until the seventh, two tracks (“Back Together” featuring Kehlani and “Finally (Cannot Hide It) with Kelly Rowland and Cece Piston) are already out.

WILLOW, “lately I feel EVERYTHING” - July 16
Willow Smith constantly gives Black alternative-music lovers something to rock to, and it seems as though lovers of that genre will be getting more of the sort on July 16. “I want the fans to know how much gratitude I have for every play, share, or like. It really means a lot to me! It’s only up from here!!!”
By: Omar Cook
North Carolina artist, Josh Cozy, talks the release of his latest album, It’s Prolly Too Late! His last project Black Smilez, was definitely a great EP, but Josh turns it up a notch with this project. You can definitely hear the growth from the last project to this one, and when speaking about what separates this project from his previous, Josh says,
“Maturity. Me, Stepping into who I want to be even more. Investing into the craft. Sound quality, production and overall lyrical content/storytelling. I worked really hard on this one. Had to grind it out! It feels special.”
Josh Cozy
The title itself is relatable to what's been going on in the past year with the pandemic, and people trying to find themselves and recreate themselves despite the circumstances.
“I’ve been in a phase of life where I personally counted myself out just due to all the chaos going on outside in a way. I felt like it’s been self sabotage in a sense. This year 2021... it’s been a great start for me on all levels. I’m finally getting back to myself. So the project ‘It’s prolly too late’ stemmed from that.”
Josh Cozy
The project features 10 tracks, and each track is fire. This is a no skips project that you can play in the car and just vibe to. It’s hard to pick a favorite track but our personal favorite is the final track “Of Me”, as Josh finishes off this project with a bang.
“Must listen is definitely ‘Change for you’ and I say that because I believe we’ve all been there before. At some point, we’ve all dealt with the rocky relationship/situationship or whatever you may want to call it.
Favorite track probably is ‘These Feelings’ featuring Jae Breeze. He actually gave me that track and just the overall content up there. Speaking on family and mental dealings. It was a release!”
Josh Cozy speaks his truth on every track, discussing overcoming relationship issues, and everyday issues. When speaking on the overall message of the project, Josh says,
“Most importantly, on ‘Of Me’ which is the outro of the project, I spoke freely on never casting yourself out of things. While you breathing, still here.... we got the time. It’s never too late to take a shot at things in life. Choose your perspective and navigate best you can.”
Every project Josh Cozy drops speaks about growth and listening to each track, you can definitely see the evolution in his music as well as overall maturity. As far as what we can expect from him in the future:
“Continuing to drop music/visual content all year long! Super excited for these videos from the project that are on the way! I feel they bring it to life even more!”

“New Music Friday”: 4 Hip Hop Projects To Look Out For
Summer is almost officially here, meaning that the perfectly curated summer playlists will soon be in full effect! Here are 4 highly anticipated hip hop projects to look out for on new music Friday!
J. Cole drops the “Off Season”
By: Cory Utsey
Summer is almost officially here, meaning that the perfectly curated summer playlists will soon be in full effect!
While 2021 has given us a few bangers here and there, there are a few artists who have been hinting at-- and in some cases confirming-- the release of some new projects, and a few of them happen to fall on May 14.
So let us take a quick look at four anticipated projects for this New Music Friday.
J. Cole - “The Off Season”
J. Cole and Dreamville have given us some amazing songs over the last two years with “Revenge of the Dreamers III” in 2019 and “Revenge of the Dreamers III: Director’s Cut” in 2020, but his last solo album was 2018’s “KOD”.
With that in mind, many were shocked to see that on May 4, he announced via Instagram that “The Off-Season” would be released on May 14.
Not only were fans given a sneak peak of how the album might sound with the May 6 release of “i n t e r l u d e”, but by May 10, the “Applying Pressure: The Off-Season Documentary” premiered on YouTube.
And by the looks of his L.A. Leakers Freestyle with Power 106 Los Angeles, which went viral on May 12, this album is about as highly anticipated as highly anticipated gets.
J. Cole - 9 5 . s o u t h (Official Audio)
Nicki Minaj - “Beam Me Up Scotty”
Not only is The Barbie back, but her comeback made the Crocs website crash!
Minaj, who had seemingly stepped away from social media for a couple of months, made a swift return (in pink Crocs) on May 10 to tell the world that we should be expecting something from her “F R I D A Y 🤞🏽”.
The Queen dropped Beam Me Up Scotty, which is the official release of her 2009 mixtape featuring 22 songs!
Nicki Minaj - Beam Me Up Scotty (Official Audio)
Jorja Smith - “Be Right Back”
Jorja Smith, who recently released “Nobody But You” with Sonder on April 9, might make the cut for your more relaxed summer playlists.
But the smooth and sultry songstress is releasing the eight-track project called “Be Right Back” both digitally and in vinyl, which comes three years after “Lost & Found”.
Smith has continued to experiment with new sounds and genres in the singles that she has dropped since her debut album, such as “Be Honest”, “By Any Means” and “Bussdown” (which was released on May 13 and comes right off of her new album).
Described as a sort of “sonic waiting-room” by Kyann-Sian Williams, this project should hold fans over until the official release of her sophomore album.
Jorja Smith - Time
Earthgang - “Ghetto Gods”
The details surrounding the release of Earthgang’s sophomore album “Ghetto Gods” are a bit sketchy, as the duo has been hinting at the album’s release yet had never confirmed a date.
However, by the looks of an ambiguous tweet made by the duo on May 6, as well as Hip Hop DX’s Album Release Dates, it is likely that we will be getting the album this New Music Friday.
Hopefully, we will be proven right.
With much to listen to on May 14, it is almost certain that at least one of these artists will come through with some amazing music to get us through the summer; let the listening begin!

Saweetie: Hip-Hop's Girl Next Door
Saweetie has cemented her influence in Hip Hop by making her music relatable and accessible for other women, establishing herself as hip-hop's Girl Next Door. We discuss it here!
By: Prince Hakeem
As female rappers' visibility and profile within hip-hop continue to elevate, there seem to be growing discussions on who's-who and where each of them "fit" within the culture. Through the late 90s to 2010s, there was a drought in regards to female rapping talent. Outside of Nicki Minaj, fans were hard-pressed to see more than one female act on the forefront in mainstream hip-hop. However, thanks to streaming, social media, and defiant pushbacks against long-held industry sexism, the landscape has shifted, and there are more diverse acts in the game today than ever before. It's safe to say that we are experiencing a Female Rap Renaissance.
Despite this new boom of artists, much of the online conversation centers on stereotypes or lanes they're expected to operate in. These "labelings," in turn, shape audiences' perception of the artist, their legitimacy, and how serious they are to be taken. While male rappers have more freedom to label themselves, the same can't be said of female rappers. She's either the unappealing conscious lyricist or the vulgar sex pot.
While the ubiquitous "rapper who only talks about sex" label is primarily aimed at women rappers, it's a lazy one-dimensional take on these dynamic artists. A new classification, however, has emerged in this new era. It's The Girl Next Door. Known as a movie trope where her accessibility is tied to a male protagonist, hip-hop's version of the Girl Next Door sees the female rapper who establishes her presence and sets goals for herself, first, and other women. And there is no other female artist who exemplifies this than Bay Area rapper and social media influencer Saweetie. She's Hip-Hop's Girl Next Door.
Born in Hayward, California, Saweetie, whose real name is Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper, was built for the spotlight. There've been assertions that she's being forced on audiences as her online presence seems inescapable. And while she may appear to have come out of nowhere, that is not the case.
Saweetie is a self-made woman, and her breakout was a long time coming. She began songwriting at 13. The California native held education in the same high regard as music. After high school, Saweetie first attended San Diego State University, studying communication and business. Her dream school, however, was the University of Southern California (USC). Even though it was a struggle, including doubting family members and a letter to the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, Saweetie soon transferred to USC.
"But I promised myself if I got into USC, it was a sign I needed to finish college," she recalls during an interview with the Daily Trojan.
Saweetie's work ethic has been a constant fixture in her journey. While at USC, she held down four jobs. It speaks to the hustling attitude that has garnered her the visibility and attention she's enjoying today. Creating her own t-shirt brand, the 'My Type' singer also worked at a sports bar and Marshalls. On top of all that, Saweetie worked as a research assistant for a professor named Ann Majchrzak. The professor spoke on Saweetie's tremendous work ethic, recalling how she put in "several hundred hours" coding for a research project over a few months.
Despite the hectic school and work schedule, Saweetie still honed her musical skills. She would write rhymes every day on her nearly 2-hour commute to USC from Northridge. For an individual who most audiences write off as just being "pretty," she's not afraid of hard work.
The two most remarkable catalysts of Saweetie's rise are her relatability and consistency. She leaned into social media very early, showcasing not only her skills but her personality as well. She only had $40 to her name in 2017 when a freestyle posted on Instagram would change everything for her.
My Neck My Back- Saweeti Freestyle
Rapping over Khia's "My Neck, My Back" beat, Saweetie launched herself into viral superstardom. The song would eventually become "Icy Grl," giving her the first big song and break into the music industry. She then met her manager Max Gousse and signed to his label Artistry Worldwide, in partnership with Warner Records. The Freestyle gave an authentic birth to her ICY calling card and brand.
The Icy Girl branding is the crux of Saweetie's persona and artistry. After her break out hit with 'Icy Grl,' Saweetie caught another viral moment with her "High Maintenance" freestyle. She rode that moment into the debut of her first EP of the same name. She hit significant adversity with her infamous Hot97 Freestyle, creating the "she's pretty, but can't rap" narrative, which she still deals with today. However, that did not stop her.
She moved on to release her second EP, Icy, in 2019. It featured her biggest hit thus far, 'My Type'. Next was 'Tap In' in 2020, earning Saweetie her second Top 10 placement on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. She's continued her streak of hot catchy singles with 'Back to the Streets' alongside Jhene Aiko and the girl power anthem 'Best Friend' record featuring Doja Cat.
Saweetie - Best Friend (feat. Doja Cat) [Official Music Video]
Saweetie's perseverance with music best represents her Icy Girl moniker. Even with harsh critics dismissing her rap skills and online threads continuously dragging her, she "bosses up," accepts responsibility, and works through the problem.
"I'm really grateful for my start," Saweetie says in Cosmopolitan's March cover story. "Because the mistakes, the struggle, the grind—it allows me to appreciate the rewards that come now because I know what it feels like to sleep in motels, to drive and do promo, to be stressed out."
Being an Icy Girl aims to be the best version of yourself and want better things in life.
"It's not always about being iced up or stuntin' on hoes. Icy to me is hustling and having the mentality of getting what you said you was gon' get. Everything I was gon' get, I got. It's very important to believe in yourself — and that's what an icy girl and an icy boy is."
More than just defining what the Icy brand is, Saweetie cements her influence by making it relatable and accessible for other women. It's what makes her hip-hop's Girl Next Door. She's the girly-girls best friend. Motivated and aggressive, yet warm and inviting. She will interact with her fans and hype up the dance videos made to her records. She doesn't base her career or validation on the success of a boyfriend or male suitor.
Saweetie upholds this self-assured independence as a standard. It, in turn, sets an example for the women, who admire her beauty and confidence, to follow. That is the secret behind Saweetie. The music speaks it, the online personality reinforces it, and her boss moves manifest it. Her overall likability and branding have already gone past her music. It's the fuel behind her consistent digital presence.
When you see her, she's always having fun, looks fantastic, and aspires to bigger and better. Who wouldn't want to get next to that?

Los Angeles rapper HutchTheGift dropped a dope new album titled It’s Simple! The project is the first of the year for this upcoming rapper and HutchTheGift definitely delivered with some bangers!
“I came up with the name of the project from the George Floyd murder in 2020. If he can’t breathe, stop pressing down on his neck. Its Simple.”
HutchTheGift brings relatable lyrics to his tracks and that Hip Hop fans need right now especially with all that is going on with the world. The project features 12 tracks with a number of features from Kavo, Agbon, RepXL, MoThoro, Black Mike, Rasual, and Willyisforever! Our favorite track is “Bless Me” as this track will make you press repeat and adding in a Dr. Sebi reference sealed the deal as our top pick. “My favorite, it’s a tie between “Crucify” and “Favorite” said HutchTheGift.
Hutchthegift - Bless Me (Official Music Video)
In today’s Hip Hop world, we often hear artists that sound like clones of other artist, but HutchTheGift sounds like only himself and that reflects in the overall message he was trying to portray with this album.
“The overall message I wanted to send is to always be yourself no matter what.”
HutchTheGift has a contagious sound that keeps you locked in as soon as the track starts. His unique flow separates him from other artists, but you can definitely hear the Los Angeles influence in delivery.
“What separates me from other artists is my cadence, delivery, realness, and how relatable my music is.”
Hutchthegift - Iso Joe (Official Music Video)
HutchTheGift’s raw lyrics, dope beats, and smooth delivery makes him a candidate for a break out artist; slept on to say the least! You will definitely be hearing more from this California artist. “In 2021, lookout for the world of HutchTheGift.”

West Coast rapper dropped his highly anticipated EP Ocho II! His first EP Ocho was a success for the upcoming rapper and this new project definitely did not dissapoint. This artist came out hot last year in 2019 with 5 hot tracks on Ocho and is continuing to make a name for himself.
It’s just a continuation of the first EP. My first EP was called Ocho. So this one is just part 2. I feel like my first project was raw because I was just getting into the music scene. This project is more elevated as far as how it sounds.
The very first track on the EP “Lowkey”, sets the whole tone for the project which is definitely a track that you can vibe too, featuring fellow artist DaiDMB and produced by Jonny Cash.
The song “Lowkey” is a banger in my book. It’s a good party banger. The beat is smooth and everything. The song “Put You On” ft. Xian Bell is a more r&b feel. I think people would fuck with that.
This project features 5 songs that definitely give off a dope West Coast sound. My personal favorite off the project is “Put You On” which has the most traditional R and B sound on the project. 1TakeOcho is original in his delivery as there isn’t an artist that sounds like him. He mixes raw explicit lyrics with R and B and west coast beats to produce a quality project all around.
People can expect some good sounding music and good vibes no cap! I’m pretty excited about this EP because it was a lot of quality involved as far as the cover art for and the songs on it. I hope y’all fuckin with it. I’m just tryna give y’all some good vibes.

“This project really embodies the growth of someone on a journey and dealing with outgrowing people, and disappointments. The outside conflicts of the world.”
By: Omar Cook
East Coast rapper, Kafar Myers, recently dropped his new mixtape Self Privilege! This project certainly didn’t disappoint as it gave a true hip hop feel, real lyrics, and dope beats!
It’s what I represent, the self privilege lifestyle, which is finding purpose within yourself. Wanted a title the spoke to everyone especially the ones that embraced superiority in individuality. This project is the soundtrack to that.
This mixtape features 8 tracks and there is no song that you will want to skip, a total complete project. The whole tape gives off J Cole vibes.
Every song is a must listen but if I had to choose one it will be track 6 WALK N WARS,
because it’s a song reflecting on the generational defects we are seeing at the moment. Situations like freshmen having babies, guns over knowledge, depression, social media bringing an addiction to live out our means.
This is the second project of the year for Kafar Myers as he dropped his album Testimony earlier this year.
This project has a more steady focus on self growth and a more vivid message from start to end. The versatility from start to finish is a credible change as well!
My personal favorite is “Fall Back” as it gives a more up beat tempo with relatable lyrics of course, but each song is dope no doubt. You get a true variety of sounds on this project.
Expect to hear a versatility of sounds. Melodic choruses and verses as well as a life changing metaphors. Story telling, with inspiring words !
Check out the project below and download to itunes now!

Death of Juice WRLD Raises The Discussion Of Drug Abuse In Hip Hop Culture
Hip Hop has always been at the forefront of growing trends in America, with drug use becoming a major focal point in the last decade. The recent death of Juice WRLD raises the discussion of drug abuse In Hip Hop culture! We discuss it here!
By: Omar Cook
Hip Hop for the last 40 years has been at the forefront of growing trends in America, with every decade bringing in new waves of rappers and new styles. This particular decade of the 2010s I have noticed a growing trend of glorifying drug use and it’s becoming disturbing with lives being lost unfortunately.
Just recently we lost 21 year rapper Juice WRLD to an overdose of prescription drugs. 21 y’all. The crazy thing is that this could have been prevented, and it was his own doing. We also lost legendary Mac Miller to the same issue. While these guys make some dope music, it’s obvious that hard drugs have become a major issue.
This time period is weird because it’s like, when did glorifying drugs and being high alllllll the time become the thing to do? You hear rappers daily speak about using percocets, codeine, Xanax, Molly, cocaine, etc. What issues are plaguing these rappers so much that these drugs become the only option? Hitting the blunt a few times wasn’t enough???
These rappers perpetuate this lifestyle into the minds of an already impressionable generation that holds onto rap lyrics like gold. And killing themselves in the process. I just want to say before I keep going, glorifying these drugs and being high all the time is not the wave. These are the signs of a junky.
J Cole spoke about the issues of drug abuse and drug addiction on his song “Friends” on his album KOD.
You running from yourself and you buying product again
I know you say it helps and no I'm not trying to offend
But I know depression and drug addiction don't blend
Reality distorts and then you get lost in the wind
And I done seen the combo take niggas off the deep end
One thing about your demons they bound to catch up one day
I'd rather see you stand up and face them than run away
I understand this message is not the coolest to say
But if you down to try it I know of a better way
Meditate
J. Cole - FRIENDS
We don’t get to hear about the lives of regular citizens that are lost due to these drug problems, only when celebrities or music artists die because of it. How many more people have to pass away before we start labeling this as a real problem? It would be easy to say stop supporting music that encourages this drug culture, but that would be irrational because this is a generational problem. There are a number of artists that push drug culture and normalize depression and sadness in their music.
My issue is not with the artists that choose to live this lifestyle because these are grown people making their own decisions, but the fact that their are kids and teenagers coming up that feed off of these young rappers is where this becomes a major problem. Hip hop will continue to be a major influencer but at what point do we start pushing music that speaks on real issues or encourages its audience to do better instead of continuously pushing music that sets us back?
It is very unfortunate what happened to Juice WRLD as this was another young black live lost, but he is also fully responsible for his actions. Anyone that chooses to abuse drugs will have to deal with the consequences that comes with it. The solution…don’t do drugs.
