The 22 year old rookie standout of the Chicago Sky has signed on to join Unrivaled, a new 3-on-3 winter women’s basketball league founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart. In an increased effort to provide additional options to professional women’s basketball players who often rely on overseas teams during the off-season, Reese’s signing makes her the 10th WNBA star to sign with the new league.

For years, women have relied heavily on off-court sponsorships for a majority of their income. With Unrivaled, we’re revolutionizing the game by prioritizing investments in our stars and ensuring their on-court performance is reflected in their pay.
— Breanna Stewart

Unrivaled will feature 6 teams during its inaugural season, with 5 players on each team. Games will have a 1-hour playing time, with 4 quarters of play including a game clock and a shot clock. The league will also host a 1v1 single-elimination tournament to determine the best 1v1 player in the world. The league will also feature historic contracts, offering the highest average salary in women’s professional sports league history.

Unrivaled Basketball’s additional player pool includes Arike Ogunbowale, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Rhyne Howard, Kahleah Cooper, Jackie Young, Chelsea Grey, and the two founders. Investors include U.S. soccer stars Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, NBA legends Carmelo Anthony and Steve Nash, LPGA champion Michelle Wie West, former ESPN and Turner presidents John Skipper and David Levy and more.

This is going to be a league for all players and that’s why the ownership perspective is really, really valuable for us. To do anything, you have to have a few first movers, but I think after that then it’s getting the collective group attached and knowing that they have an equal share and are part of helping this thing grow, and will have voices into how this thing grows as well.
— Alex Bazzell, Unrivaled president

The season tips off in January 2025 in Miami.

Jayson Tatum Secures Largest Contract In NBA History With Extension From Celtics

Jayson Tatum makes NBA history with a groundbreaking $314 million contract extension from the Boston Celtics, securing his future with the team shortly after their 18th championship win. We discuss it here!

Jayson Tatum Secures Largest Contract In NBA History With Extension From Celtics

By: Joshua Martin

Just days after winning their league-leading 18th title, the Boston Celtics took little time ensuring fans that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown will be in Boston for the foreseeable future. Despite not winning Finals MVP, Tatum now can claim the distinct honor of having the richest contract in NBA history. The new 5 year deal worth a record $314 million, overtakes his teammate and Finals MVP Jaylen Brown’s $285 million deal, which at the time was the richest in league history.

Tatum was a force this season despite being highly scrutinized. During the Celtics impressive playoff run he averaged 25 points, just under 10 rebounds, and six assists per game. Adding veteran pieces such as Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to an already talented roster increased the pressure to win a championship. After years of coming up short, they finally got the job done against the Dallas Mavericks in a convincing 5 games.

BOSTON CELTICS ARE YOUR 2024 NBA CHAMPIONS 🏆 | 2024 NBA Finals

Tatum’s career accolades include a championship, a new record setting deal, 3 straight First Team All-NBA selections and 5 straight All-Star selections. Not bad before the age of 26.

Next season, the Celtics look to win back-to-back championships for the first time since the 2017 and 2018 Golden State Warriors. They will once again have a talented core after resigning guard Derrick White to a new deal also. Even with Kristaps on the mend, and inevitable age and regression, this Celtics team looks like they will be a thorn in the side of all NBA teams for years to come.

Lakers Draft Bronny James, Creating First Father-Son Duo in NBA History

The Los Angeles made history by selecting Bronny James in the second round of this year’s NBA draft, becoming the first team to potentially have a father-son duo play in the league. We discuss it here!

This year’s NBA Draft may go down as one of the most memorable drafts of all time. Not only did we see a plethora of potential stars walk across the stage but in the second round at pick number 55, The Los Angeles Lakers made history. With the 55th selection the Lakers chose Bronny James, making he and Lebron the first father son duo to play in the league simultaneously.

Multiple videos and stills surfaced of Lebron, Savannah, Bryce and LeBron’s mother, Gloria James, huddling around Bronny as he watched his name get called. The former USC Trojan could be seen wiping away tears as his mother handed him his official Lakers Draft Night hat.

Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka spoke on this historical moment

In the history of the NBA, there’s never been a father and a son that have shared an NBA basketball court and that feels like something that could be magical. We know, and have to respect of course, that LeBron has a decision on his opt-out…but if it worked out that he was on our team next season, NBA history could be made. And NBA history should be made in a Lakers uniform.
— Rob Pelinka

L.A.’s second superstar Anthony Davis shared similar sentiments. Admitting that Bronny will be fine, highlighting his on court abilities and his willingness to create his own path and not thrive off of the successes of his legendary father.

He’s very good defensively. He can read the floor very well. I think he’s a really good playmaker. I saw him work out a couple times besides the [Klutch Sports] pro day and working with a big — his reads, reading the defense, making the right passes — that was really impressive to me. I think he’s going to be fine, man. But one thing about Bronny, from what I’ve seen and what I heard, he wants to create his own path and he doesn’t want to be — even though he’s LeBron James‘ son, he don’t want be seen as that. And I think having that mindset and trying to create his own path is going to work out for him. … Who knows, he might come in and be ready to play for us.
— Anthony Davis, ESPN

During Bronny’s short collegiate stint at USC, the guard averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 19.4 minutes per game. His playing time and draft stock took a major hit after suffering from a cardiac arrest incident and surgery. His recovery sideland him for almost 5 months, making his basketball career murky at best.

“The Round Mound of Rebound” is officially calling it quits. NBA legend, Charles Barkley, announced last week that the upcoming NBA season will be his last year on television. According to reports, Barkley’s move coincides with the expiration of Warner Bros. Discovery’s media rights deal with the NBA.

“I ain’t going nowhere other than TNT. But I have made the decision that no matter what happens, next year is going to be my last year on television. And I just want to say thank you to my NBA family. You guys have been great to me. My heart is full with joy and gratitude.” - Charles Barkley, NBATV

“I hope the NBA stays with TNT, but for me personally, I wanted you guys to hear it from me. I wanted to tell my NBATV and TNT family that I’m not going to another network, but I’m going to pass the baton to either Jamal Crawford or Vince Carter or you Steve (Smith). But next year, I’m going to just retire after 25 years, and I just wanted to say thank you. And I wanted y’all to hear it from me first.” - Charles Barkley, NBATV

The Alabama native and former NBA MVP joined “Inside the NBA” in 2000 and since has been awarded four Emmys and also earned an induction into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame. His authentic perspective on the game of basketball has garnered national attention on numerous occasions, making him one of the highest-paid announcers in professional sports.

“Charles is a Hall of Famer and a broadcasting icon who is and will always be a beloved member of the TNT Sports family. We’re looking forward to another fantastic NBA on TNT season and further discussion of our future plans with him.” - TNT Sports via statement

Top 10 NBA Backcourts of the Last 25 Years

Let's take a look at the most dominating guard tandems since the turn of the century. Here are the top ten backcourts of the last 25 years!

By: Joshua Martin

Lately, anytime the Dallas Mavericks are on television, it feels as though there’s a national conversation about the best backcourts in NBA history. And rightfully so! The Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving pairing is one of the most explosive offensive backcourts the game has ever seen. But are they the best?

We can't forget the Splash Bros. who shattered shooting records during the 2010’s, or the massively successful duo of Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher. What about Tony Parker and Manu Ginoboli or the Grindhouse Grizzlies with Mike Conley and Tony Allen. Billups and Hamilton, Teague and Korver, CP3 and Harden? There are so many great duos to choose from.

Nothing incites sports fans more than a good ole top ten list. Let's take a look at the most dominating guard tandems since the turn of the century. While there may be an obvious number one, the criteria for this list was simple. Sustained on-court success, whether or not the duo won championships and also the lasting impact the two had on the court were taken into account.

Don't like our list? Let us know!

Honorable Mentions:

Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver: This All star duo led the Hawks to its franchise's only 60 win season before losing in the playoffs to Lebron and the Cavs.

Jason Kidd and Vince Carter: These two were deadly in the open court. VInce’s high flying style blended perfectly with Kidd’s pinpoint passing. Injuries and new blood in the Eastern conference stymied this duo's ascension.

Tony Allen and Mike Conley: Conley is a steady scorer and passesr while Allen became known as one of the scariest defenders in the league. Consistent duo that lacked nationwide exposure.

10.) Chris Paul and James Harden

Their time was short-lived but quite successful. The MVP version of the Beard and the Point God pushed the Golden State Warriors to Game 7 in the 2018 conference finals. If it wasn’t for a CP3 injury this team would’ve advanced to the Finals.

9.) Bradley Beal and John Wall

Oh what could’ve been. Wall’s athleticism and smooth passing skills made him an instant star in Washington. Beal, a sturdy scoring guard with range from deep, made him the perfect complement to Wall’s attacking, downhill style. The injury bug may be the biggest culprit behind why this duo didn't see more success on the court.

8.) Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum

Another duo that garnered success smack dab in the middle of the Warriors historic run. This duo routinely posted incredible counting stats during the regular season but lacked the critical support to compete with the better teams in the West. A conference finals appearance and the longevity of the run gives them the spot here.

7.) Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving

Luka is a walking 30 point triple double nuclear time bomb. Kyrie has the smoothest handles in the game and can easily pour in 50 on any given night. These two have enjoyed a stellar playoff run so far. A championship will boost them up this list but until then these other backcourts have won more and played together longer.

6.) Demar Derozan and Kyle Lowry

These two brought sustained success to a once moribund franchise. Their run unfortunately coincided with Lebron’s historic playoff reign over the Eastern Conference. Lowry, a feisty diminutive point, and Derozan, a mid range dynamo who also excelled at attacking the rim, accrued multiple all star appearances and the led Raptors to the playoffs 5 consecutive times during the 2010’s.

5.) Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo

Rondo was a do-it-all versatile threat while Allen, before Curry, was known as the greatest shooter in league history. Rondo’s strengths and weaknesses made him a perfect fit with Ray. The two went on to win a title with the C’s and carve out impressive Hall of Fame careers.

4.) Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton

These two pulled off one the biggest upsets in NBA Finals history. Mr. Big Shot’s clutch play and Rip’s smoothe shooting stroke spearheaded the Bad Boys 2.0 offensive attack during their improbable ‘04 title run. These two led the Pistons to six consecutive conference finals, winning 1 title while in Detroit.

3.) Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher

These two complementend each other's game perfectly. Kobe was a ball dominant scorer and Fish was more of a spot up shooter. The third ranked duo on the list propelled the Lakers to 5 NBA Titles. Fisher was also a deadly clutch shooter just as much as Kobe. With the game on the line either one could burn you.

Kobe Bryant & Derek Fisher - All We Do Is Win

2.) Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili

Parker and Ginobili were the driving force behind some historic Spurs teams. TP was a tad more consistent but the Spurs were unbeatable when Ginobili went off. This dynamic duo won 4 titles and combined with Duncan made one of the greatest teams of all-time.

1.) Steph Curry and Klay Thompson

The Splash Brothers are widely regarded as the greatest shooting backcourt of all time. There’s no debating that but what makes them greatest period is all the accolades between the two. Steph Curry is a two time MVP, multiple time scoring champion and single handley revolitonzied the game of basketball. Klay is the epitome of a quintessential ‘3 & D wing’ with the range and shooting touch that rivals his backcourt mate. 5 championships and a 73-9 season earns them this spot without question.

First Franchise of Ice Cube's BIG3 Basketball League Sold for $10 Million

Ice Cube's BIG3 Basketball League makes headlines as it sells its inaugural franchise for a massive $10 million, signaling a significant milestone in the league's growth and expansion. We discuss it here!

By: Joshua Martin

Ice Cube’s BIG3 league sells its first franchise for a massive $10 million dollars as the league continues its expansion plans.

The deal was announced on Friday, May 10th by a group led by investment firm DCB Sports out of Los Angeles. The new team will be based in L.A. and is no doubt a monumental milestone for the basketball league.

The eight-figure deal comes as the league transitions from a traveling model to one where each team in the league is based in its home city. A move the Hip-Hop legend believes will strengthen the league’s respective fanbases.

We need to plant our roots in cities so we can be more than a rolling all-star game coming through. It’s really about growing the sport and the league. We can plant our roots in these cities. It is great to come through with, like, a rolling All-Star event. But if you want to really unlock the fan-base potential, connecting to cities does that.
— Ice Cube

The league is not only adding a new franchise in Los Angeles but the BIG3 is looking to add four new ownership groups by the start of the 2024 BIG3 season in June. With the hopes of having all 12 of their existing teams sold prior to the 2025 BIG3 season.

Gary LaDrido of DCB Sports Managing Partner, pointed to 3-on-3 basketball being introduced as an Olympic sport back in 2021 at the 2020 Tokyo Games as a contributing factor in his group’s acquisition of the L.A. franchise.

We view it as an interesting property. Grabbing the LA market is super cool — and for Ice Cube to trust us to usher that in.
— Gary LaDrido, DCB Sports Managing Partner

The 2024 BIG3 season will kick off on June 15 in Oakland, Calif.

2024 NBA All-Star Weekend Recap

The 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis has wrapped up with a multitude of record-breaking events. From the All-Star Game to State Farm All-Star Saturday Night, these were the standout moments from an eventful weekend in Indianapolis. We discuss it here!

The NBA once again brought out the game’s brightest stars in its annual celebration of basketball and its legends. For those anticipating an epic showdown between “Nap-Town” native Mike Epps and Shannon Sharpe however, were highly disappointed. But, if you came to “The Hoosier City” to enjoy some hoops, you were undoubtedly entertained despite the lack of a defensive presence in Sunday night’s main event. Lets recap the biggest moments from this year’s NBA all star weekend.

Friday Night - Celebrity Game and Rising Stars

The NBA kicked off the weekend's festivities with the Celebrity Game which featured some of today’s biggest stars in all forms of entertainment. That list included popular streamer Kai Cenet, Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, musician SiR and others. Micah Parsons was the games biggest standout, pouring in 37 points and grabbing 16 rebounds leading team Shannon Sharpe over team Stephen A. Smith. A two sport athlete in highschool, Micah dominated the event becoming the second consecutive NFL player to win the contests MVP and the fourth overall.

The Rising Stars challenge was a bit different this year. A total of four teams were created from the available pool of players and were coached by former NBA and WNBA standouts. Pacers forward Benedict Mathurin won the tournament's MVP award giving Indiana fans something to cheer about while also giving us quite a bit of trash talk throughout the evening. Most notably his exchange with Pistons guard Jaden Ivey.

Side note - White the NBA stars were drafted by their respective coaches, Team Detlef was comprised of all G-League players. They were massive underdogs in the first round against team Pau and Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama but pulled off the upset with a game-winner by potential 2024 lottery pick Matas Buzelis. The G Leaguers took advantage of the moment.

Saturday Night - All Star Saturday Night

Let me start this by saying the league’s new all-LED floor was a huge win. The possibilities are endless, I can't wait to see how far they take it although it does seem to be more of a novelty than an All Star Saturday night staple.

The stage was set for Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton to potentially have a monumental night and he didn't dissapoint. Leading Team Pacers to victory in the Kia Skills Challenge.

Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard became the seventh player to successfully repeat as champion in the Starry 3-point Contest winning the star studded tournament with his last shot. Lucas Oil Stadium was set ablaze as hit the moneyball two point shot on the final rack to secure the victory.

G-Leaguer Mac McClung vaulted over 7 foot 1 NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal for a perfect score of 50, joining Dame as repeat champion in the AT&T Slam Dunk contest. The 25 year old was able to display his vertical athleticism and supreme body control, leaving many to wonder why he hasn’t been able land a full time role in the league.

Last but not least, the NBA decided to debut a brand new event that stole the show. Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry outdueled WNBA superstar Sabrina Ionescu in a historic 3-point challenge that featured two of the game's greatest sharpshooters.

This couldn’t have gone any better in the sense of us two taking the chance in front of this stage, running around with all the hype, and to deliver like that, she set the bar, it was unbelievable to watch. So, this might be something - I don’t know if anybody can fill these shoes but it might be something that we need to do more often.
— Steph Curry

With the success Steph vs. Sabrina had, it's highly probable the NBA will follow Chef Curry’s advice and look to bring back in 2025.

Sunday Night - All Star game

Dame Lillard's impressive weekend continued into Sunday night’s main event. Despite some of his well publicized struggles with his new team, Dame Dolla was on point for most of the evening draining logo threes with ease, pouring in 39 points with 11 made from deep. Capturing the coveted NBA All-star Game Kobe Bryant MVP award for the time in his career.

The biggest takeaway from the game however was the lack of defensive intensity by the Western Conference. The game basically turned into a glorified 3-point contest but onlookers expected a better showing from a team stacked with future Hall of Famers. Karl Anthony-Towns led the way for the West with an absurd 50 points but outside of the occasional shooting spurts from the games greatest  and the anticipation of a strong Tyrese Haliburton appearance, the game itself left much to be desired.

Interesting All star weekend stats

**This is the third time in league history the same players have won the 3-point contest and Slam Dunk contest in back to back years.

87-88: Larry Bird, Michael Jordan

02-03: Peja Stojakovic, Jason Richardson

23-24: Damian Lillard, Mac McClung

**The 67 combined made 3-pointers set an All-Star game record, besting the previous record of 62 set in 2019. The teams combined to attempt five free throw attempts.

Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson Return to Reebok as President and Vice President of Basketball

Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson are the new faces of Reebok Athletics, tasked with rebuilding the brand's reputation and re-launching Reebok Basketball in 2025, bridging the past and the future. We discuss it here.

By: Joshua Martin

Shaquille O’Neal, a four-time NBA champion and arguably one of the greatest big men to ever play the game, is teaming up with 2000s NBA legend Allen Iverson to become the new faces of Reebok Athletics. The two will serve as President and Vice President, respectively.

Reebok announced that the shoe company aims to rebuild its reputation in team sports after leaving Adidas and being acquired by Authentic Brand Group for $2.46 billion in 2022. Reebok executives said the company plans to fully re-launch Reebok Basketball in early 2025.

In his new role as President of Basketball, Shaq will lead strategy, partnerships, and relationships with athletes and organizations to expand the Reebok basketball brand. Additionally, O’Neal went on to praise “The Answer” for his impact on the game of basketball and his overall cultural impact.

Al is a founding father of Reebok Basketball and has left a lasting impact on the game and its surrounding culture.
— Shaquille O’Neal

O’Neal has a history with Reebok, having launched the brand's first signature shoe, the Shaq Attaq series in 1992. However, he parted ways with the shoe company after an incident leaving the Orlando Magic facility after a practice, which ultimately led to his decision to leave the brand.

Shaquille O'Neal

Reebok Shaq Attack

Upon leaving Reebok in 1998, Shaq partnered with Walmart to start his affordable show, “The Dunk Man”. The shoe brand ultimately sold 400 million pairs of sneakers. The shoes were priced between $19 and $29 and were sold in almost every Walmart in the country.

Shaq reconnected with Reebok in 2012 to relaunch his signature shoe in retro fashion. In a recent statement, Reebok said it aims to honor and incorporate the legacy of basketball legends beyond their playing days and that is reflected in bringing Shaq and Iverson on board in big roles.

Allen Iverson

Reebok Question

As a president, I know what my role is. I’m gonna be focusing on player development and partnerships.
— Shaquille O’Neal

Like Shaq, Iverson’s main focus will be to help drive player recruitment while simultaneously building grassroots and community-based initiatives, and athlete activations.

It’s all about product, players, and the community and having the confidence to do things our own way. We need to capitalize on Reebok’s heritage and product expertise in the sport for today’s youth, but also focus on getting involved in the community from a grassroots level. We’re going to bring in a new generation of players who have strong authenticity and passion, or what I like to refer to as the it factor, who can put their own mark on this brand and make it relevant to a whole new generation.
— Shaquille O’Neal

Nike continues to completely dominate the basketball shoe market, particularly with the Air Jordan brand. Reebok has underperformed in that market in recent decades but Shaq and Iverson may be the best way for the company to bridge the past and the future.

Flau’jae Johnson is making a significant impact on the youth in her hometown of Savannah, Georgia. As part of her champion "Homecoming Weekend" celebration, the rising basketball star donated $10,000 to her former hangout spot, the Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club, on Friday July 28th.

The local hero came back to her hometown to inspire and motivate the younger generation to pursue their dreams fearlessly. “This is something I always wanted to do. I always want to give back to the community, and I am so glad this worked out. I am super excited to be back here with the kids,” Johnson stated, according to WTOC-TV's report. The Frank Callen Club was where Johnson started honing her court skills.

During her visit, Johnson reminisced about her time playing on the boys' basketball team and highlighted the importance of her visit. “I hope they realize that they can do it, too. I come from the same place. I was here just 10 years ago. I want them to know that they can do it, too, and when they do, do it to give back to someone else,” she stated.

As a freshman on the LSU Tigers basketball team, the 19-year-old played a crucial role in leading her team to a 2023 NCAA championship victory, along with teammate Angel Reese, both capitalizing on NIL deals as roster stars. Flau'jae, who is also a rapper, expressed on Twitter how rewarding it is to give back. “I grew up in here, played on my first basketball team here. This place molded me to become the person I am today. Forever grateful. This is only the start,” in a separate tweet, she further expressed her thoughts.

Johnson is currently featured in the second season of ‘Fenom,’ a docuseries that chronicles the rise of female athletes, and she hosted a special screening on Friday night. Other weekend events include a meet and greet with an autograph signing and a back-to-school drive to support the community before the upcoming school year. For more details, check here.

High School Elite: 5 Must Know Basketball Prospects from the 2023 Rising Junior Class

The high school basketball class of 2023 is arguably one of the most exciting recruiting classes of this era! We take a look at 5 prospects you need to know!

247 Live Culture
Bronny James at Sierra Canyon High School

Bronny James at Sierra Canyon High School

By: Baigen Seawell

As basketball season comes to a close for high school, it’s fitting to revisit the scouting report as it applies to arguably one of the most exciting recruiting classes of this era: The Class of 2023.

This class features the likes of Bronny James, Mikey Williams and more. The level of skill and talent seen in this particular prospect group makes me excited for the future of basketball at the collegiate level. And while it may be too early to predict where some of these prospects may land, it’s never too early to review their style of play and existing offers to see how they fare for the future.

1. Mikey Williams (Lake Norman Christian, San Diego CA)

Williams is one of the most well known and highly publicized athletes in the class of 2023. A 6’2” combo guard who hails from San Diego, Williams landed in North Carolina where he’s flourishing with Lake Norman Christian. Williams is quick, agile and is known to get above the rim and put on a show with his dunks and crafty layups.

Outside of his vertical, he’s not afraid to shoot around the field. As a combo guard, he’s been seen to take the opportunity in the field when the opportunity presents itself. He has received offers from numerous HBCUs such as Hampton, Howard, and Alabama State, along with offers from Arizona, UCLA and more.

2. DJ Wagner (Camden HS, Camden NJ)

Wagner is one of the unanimous prospects amongst recruiting sites with a number one ranking. A 5-star athlete, the 6’3” recruit, Wagner gave up football to pursue basketball in high school. The point guard is a righty, but is seen to handle the ball comfortably with his left. Wagner is also a quick release shooter around the field.

To add, this is a family affair as DJ’s father is Dajuan Wagner, who was a first round pick for the Cavs in 2002. His grandfather is Milt Wagner, who played for Louisville and at the professional level as well. They all attended Camden, where DJ is currently playing for, and he looks to keep the legacy going. He has eyes on him from Kentucky and Penn State.

3. Bronny James (Sierra Canyon HS, Cleveland OH)

Another NBA legacy, Bronny James is no surprise for anyone when you bring up the Class of 2023. James sits at 6’2” playing at the combo guard position, where his style of play is reminiscent of his father. Despite all of the love everywhere else, he hasn’t been generating a lot of love on the recruiting sites.

As of 2/15, James sits at 25 on the ESPN Top 25 and 19 on 247Sports. This doesn’t deter the attention he’s been receiving from schools like UNC, Duke, UCLA and a slew of other powerhouse programs. He still has a few more years to make a dent in the high school realm, and his signing will arguably be one of the most highly regarded, regardless of the school he chooses.

4. Baye Fall (Lutheran HS, Denver CO)

Fall is one to watch for, as he comes into the recruiting class as a 6’11” center. Fall traveled from Senegal to pursue basketball and has quickly moved up the ranks residing in the number 6 spot (ESPN). He’s been compared to Marcus Camby, but scouts don’t want to pin his style to a player so early in his career.

Fall is not as refined in skill as other prospects on his list, but he’s in good standing for the long run. His size will be a great asset for any team, and he’ll bulk up as he progresses through his basketball career. He’s received offers from Georgia, Georgetown, Minnesota and Kansas and has eyes from plenty of programs across the country.

5. Isaiah Collier (Wheeler HS, Marietta GA)

Collier is a hidden gem in the Class of ‘23. He quietly sits at 15 on the ESPN Top 25 and 15 on 247Sports. He’s a true point guard who’s able to scan the floor and play unselfishly when handling the ball. He shows great chemistry with his teammates as he comes off of a 2020 State Championship his freshman year with Wheeler.

Wheeler is also no stranger to creating NBA prospects, their most recent being Jaylen Brown of the Celtics. While Collier has a few years left to make a decision, he’s racked up offers from Florida, Ole Miss and Texas Tech. As he progresses, I trust that his price will go up and his demand will be highly regarded amongst D1 institutions.

That One Time: Lisa Leslie Scored 101 Points in a High School Game

Lisa Leslie once scored 101 points in 16 minutes in a high school game! We discuss the impact of the game and why she fell just short of Cheryl Miller’s 105 point record!

Everyone remembers the 100-point game that the late great Wilt Chamberlain had. To this day, there’s a few people who believe that this may or may not be true, just because stat keeping wasn’t as thorough as they are in the present day.

For the majority of us though, we agree that this happened and it nearly happened again with Kobe’s 81-point game in 2006. It definitely can happen with the nature of basketball ever changing and evolving into a perimeter style game. Within the past 20 years, we’ve seen shots begin to move outwards, and Steph Curry can arguably be the catalyst for this.

Needless to say, we’ve become enamored with how the game has morphed in regards to scoring.

But let’s talk about this stat-line for a second.

31 years ago (Feb 7, 1990), Lisa Leslie scored 101 points in 16 minutes.

101 points.

In 16 minutes.

The Morningside High School center took on South Torrance, where in 16 minutes, she tallied up 101 points. She shot 37 of 56 from the floor and 27 of 35 from the line. South Torrance held on throughout the half, but not for long as Leslie would score 49 points in the first quarter.

That’s around six points a minute, and I’m doubtful that transition plays were the result of this since South Torrance had every girl on Leslie to prevent her from scoring. This didn’t do much to faze her since she scored another 52 points in the second quarter.

As if the first near 50 points wasn’t enough to call it quits!

What makes this story even more outrageous is the fact that this was not the highest scoring record at that time. That feat actually belonged to Cheryl Miller, who scored 105 points in 1982. Though it seemed as if Leslie was well on her way to break the record, this feat would not become attainable for her. Entering the second half, South Torrance decided to pack it up and leave.

Leslie told the LA Times: “I was kind of heartbroken that I didn’t break the record,” Leslie said. “I asked the (South Torrance) coach before they left the court if they would let me score three more baskets, and then he asked his team, and they said ‘No.’ ”

Gil Ramirez, the South Torrance Coach, faced scrutiny for this gesture, even though their team was quite literally being embarrassed from the first tip. Some called it poor sportsmanship for Leslie’s high school coach to allow this to go on for so long, his response was he would let his players shine at least once a season, especially seniors.

Miller’s rebuttal explained it best though, and maybe it was a bit past its time when she said it:

“I know their (South Torrance) coach will holler about poor sportsmanship, but the game is to score points [...] It is a shame that she did not get a chance to break the record.”

Leslie was unable to break Miller’s record to her dismay. But it wouldn’t stand unbroken for long. 16 years later Epiphanny Prince from Manhattan, NY would envelope that record with 113 points.

7 High School Basketball Recruits To Look Out For In The Class Of 2021 (Boy’s and Girl’s)

Who to Watch For: High School Basketball’s Class of 2021 (Boy’s and Girl’s)

In a time where sports have been greatly affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic, it has no sights of slowing down any time soon. In the realm of recruitment in the high school basketball realm, we’ve have seen adjustments, but the over all desire to see future talent has not slowed up yet.

As National Signing Day quickly approaches in February, Class of 2021 is becoming the biggest talk for Programs like Louisville, Duke, UConn, South Carolina and more. Here are the Top Players to Watch for (Boy’s and Girl’s).

1. Paolo Banchero (O’Shea High School, Seattle WA)

    • Banchero is a 6’9” Power Forward out of O’Shea High School in Seattle. A 5-Star recruit, with offers from Gonzaga, University of Kentucky, North Carolina and Tennessee, Banchero decided to sign with Duke in November.

    • The Italian player is ranked No. 2 in the nation (ESPN) and averaged 22.6 points and 11 rebounds a game his junior year. It was thought that he was unlikely to choose Duke, but it looks as though his size and awareness of the court will be a valuable asset to the Blue Devils.

2. Azzi Fudd (St. Johns College HS, Washington DC)

  • The No. 1 Girl’s Player in the country, Fudd is a 5’11” combo guard from St. Johns College High School in the Nation’s Capital. For many, it wouldn’t be a surprise that Fudd would choose the Dynastic University of Connecticut for her future endeavors, where she’ll be able to emphasize her skills even more.

  • Throughout her high school career, Fudd has been compared to UConn alumna, Maya Moore with her style of play and unselfish ball-handling. After an injury in 2019, she’s looking to redeem herself with Coach Auriemma and potentially reshape the game of women’s basketball while doing it.

3. Kennedy Chandler (Sunrise Christian Academy, Memphis TN)

  • Chandler is a 6’1” Point Guard out of Memphis, TN. He would sign to the University of Tennessee in November. Another No. 2 ranked (247 Sports) player, Chandler is said to be a quick-paced guard with a high basketball IQ.

  • With offers from Duke, Arizona, and home team Memphis, Chandler chose the Volunteers, which was a good look from coach Rick Barnes who was rallying to land the point guard for a while. Chandler adds his expertise and speed to the Vols, while they’ll compliment him with size in the post.

4. Raven Johnson (Westlake, Atlanta GA)

  • Johnson is the No. 2 ranked Girl’s player in the country, where she commands overall court awareness and mid-range expertise. Johnson, who is currently playing for the Lions in Atlanta, had offers from Auburn, UCLA, UGA and Georgia Tech. But it would be fitting for the best point guard in the country to sign with one of the best, being University of South Carolina.

  • A leader on the court, Johnson will compliment with the Gamecocks and Coach Staley’s dynamic leadership that she’s established over the past few years. With Tyasha Harris moving on to the WNBA, Johnson will be able to fall in line with Zia Cooke and Destanni Henderson in the guard position.

5. Caleb Houstan (Monteverde Academy, Monteverde FL)

  • Another Florida made athlete, Caleb Houstan is a 5-star recruit from Monteverde Academy, where the likes of Ben Simmons, D’Angelo Russel and more have found success from this program. Houstan is a 6’8” Power Forward, who recently committed to Michigan.

  • The Mississauga native is not the first to be recruited by the wolverines, as they’ve landed Nik Stauskas eight years earlier. His size along with his expertise in the post will become a valuable asset to Michigan in the coming season.

6. Aubryanna Hall (Wayne, Dayton OH)

  • Another combo guard and South Carolina commit makes the list with Aubryanna Hall. The 5’11” guard is ranked 14th in the nation, but is in good company as the top 5 in her position with Azzi Fudd. Her mid-range skill and opportunistic attitude to take the shot compliments her future teammate, Raven Johnson.

  • Hall had offers from Kentucky, Ohio State, Texas and Tennessee. Her decision to join Coach Staley will be a valuable asset in the longevity of quality point guards in her program. The versatility between her and Johnson will make for terrible two’s in the near future.

7. Patrick Baldwin Jr. (Hamilton, Sussex WI)

  • Another Power Forward, Baldwin Jr. is an undecided prospect as of December. But, he’s made headlines with his skill and ability with his size, landing offers from Duke, Georgetown, Kentucky and Michigan. Unfortunately, he suffered a major ankle injury on December 4 against Menomonee Falls.

  • While it is unsure when he will return, his impact has already been made as a player. Last season, he was named the Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year with an average of 24 pints and nearly 11 rebounds a game. Duke is a high likelihood for Baldwin Jr., but we’ll have to keep an eye out to see if this stays the case for him

Life University Basketball: Atlanta’s Biggest Secret In Athletics

Atlanta is a hot bed for athletic talent, but one school in particular has been under the radar! Life University Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Anthony Maxwell, discusses Atlanta’s biggest kept secret in athletics!

Life University Basketball: Atlanta’s Biggest Secret In Athletics

By: Baigen Seawell

In 1990, Sid Williams of Life College in Marietta, Ga., would hire Roger Kaiser to be the school’s first head basketball coach. Kaiser, a two-time All-American at Georgia Tech, and former coach at West Georgia College (now University of West Georgia) would be tasked with recruiting players to play for the Running Eagles.

And Coach Max has been there through it all.

Anthony Maxwell, affectionately called “Coach Max”, is a 1999 Alum of Life College, now University, and head Women’s Basketball Coach. Coach Max would be a contributing player to the Running Eagles 1999 National Championship team; one of three acquired in the 90’s.

The Program’s history is that of a hidden gem in Georgia collegiate basketball; Maxwell is that of a historian in his own right, being there since the early stages of the program’s conception to present day.

THE HISTORY

The Running Eagles would compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The NAIA, a smaller division of competitive athletics, was considered a subsidiary of the NCAA. Many athletes would look to go Division 1 versus other routes to continue their athletic career. But, Kaiser would recruit vehemently throughout 1990, while the pieces would come together to start the first year for the program.

Almost Immediately, the program would have a stint to participate in the NAIA National Tournament in 1994, and finished as a runner-up.

At the same time in Hartwell, Ga., Maxwell would be recovering from multiple knee injuries sustained in the early stages of his budding college basketball career. Recruited at the D1 level, after sustaining those injuries, he would be in idle.

“I was a high school All-American, McDonald’s All American. […] had a few knee injuries, few surgeries, so I sat home for a few years. After two years, I had the opportunity to play at Life University.”

Maxwell would go on to play for the Running Eagles in the height of their success. After winning their first National Championship in 1997, and having seasons with 30 wins or more, he would join the team looking to get back into playing basketball and getting his business degree.

In 1999, the Running Eagles would have the opportunity to go to the National Tournament again. But throughout the season, doubts would still present themselves around the NAIA despite the positive program history. Kaiser would bring in numerous D1 and Junior College Transfers to Life during this season, establishing early that there were points to prove.

“Going into the year a lot of people didn’t think we would do well even though we did well in the previous years,” said Maxwell. “It was a complete team effort… We lost one game that year […] you go to the hotel, the lobby is crowded, elevator’s crowded; as the rounds go on, you get more and more room and you’re the last team standing; it’s a wonderful feeling.”

Life would acquire another championship in 1999, and 2000. At the national level, the program was gaining notoriety for their efforts; at the local level, they were something of a diamond in the rough for athletics and culture alike.

Life was known for their chiropractic program, and the energy and passion that Dr. Sid Williams had for said school. Williams had the ability to market and sell his school, with adamant advertisement campaigns. This would prove to be a positive, making the school alluring for aspiring athletes and established ones alike.

Professional athletes such as Dikembe Motumbo, Steve Smith and other legendary Atlanta Hawks would frequent the campus to practice, play games of pickup, or even get a haircut from Maxwell, who, at that time, ran a twenty-four hour haircut business that would make house calls to executives and celebrities around Metro-Atlanta.

“A lot of people don’t know this but, I’m a licensed barber, so I ran a business that actually started back when I was at Life,” Said Maxwell “During the 90’s Life University was the Atlanta Hawks practice facility. So I would cut all these guys hair on Life’s team, and some of the Hawks players. Then they’d have friends on other teams who would come to town to play the Hawks and say the barbershops are closed or they don’t want to get harassed at the barbershops they would call me to cut their hair.”

NOT THE CONVENTIONAL ROUTE

After graduating, Maxwell would continue cutting hair for nearly a decade, but the passion to coach would start to creep into his psyche. At 37 years old, “Max” would then become “Coach Max” in 2011 at his Alma Mater, starting out as an assistant coach.

He was nothing like the conventional coach.

He had no High School, AAU, or College experience coaching, and to get a foot in the door for Collegiate Coaching is difficult. He would push through the ranks before finally becoming the Head Women’s Basketball Coach in 2016, after a defunct team dissolved in the early 2000’s.

Again, he was not like his counterparts in the NAIA, or the Mid-South Conference. This would not only be Coach Max’s first time coaching as a head coach, but his first time coaching women’s basketball, and… he would have ten freshmen.

Through trials and growing pains the program would face in their four years, they become grounds for growth for collegiate athletics in Metro-Atlanta in their own right. Coach Max looks to establish his own legacy coaching at Life University, adding onto successes acquired in the previous seasons, and establishing the institution further.

“Life University Athletics is here, and Life University Women’s Basketball. […] We just want people to know in the surrounding area that we have play at a top level of basketball and athletics period. I think we’re Marietta, even Atlanta’s biggest secret still. But piece by piece we’re looking to change that.”
