This rich, complex and bold bourbon is the perfect offering to commemorate life’s great occasions, and will be part of a raised-glass toasting moment in the lives of my fans, friends and family.”

Carmelo Anthony Announces Retirement from the NBA

Carmelo Anthony announces retirement from NBA, reflecting on his legendary career and leaving a lasting legacy. We discuss it here!

Carmelo Anthony (credit: Andreas Branch)

By: Joshua Martin

Ten-time all star Carmelo Anthony has officially announced his retirement from the NBA via an emotional video recap of his career where the caption simply read “Thank you #STAYME7O” During the video Melo mentioned that his on the court legacy pales in comparison to the love he has for his son, the game of basketball and the fans who supported him throughout his career.

People ask what I believe my legacy is,” Anthony said. “It’s not my feats on the court that come to mind, all the awards or praise. Because my story has always been more than basketball. My legacy, my son … I will forever continue through you. The time has come for you to carry this torch.” - Carmelo via video address

The 38-year-old last played during the 2021-22 season where he was impressive coming off the bench for the Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 13.3 points and 4.2 rebounds in 69 games.

During his prime, Carmelo was arguably one of the greatest scorers of his era. Earning him numerous all star selections, in addition to a scoring title in 2013 with the Knicks.

Carmelo played seven seasons in New York, he also spent time in Denver where he was selected number 3 overall by the Nuggets in one of the more memorable draft classes of all time, that saw Lebron James go number 1, Hall of Famer Chris Bosh at 4 and future hall of famer Dwayne Wade at 5.

The 75th Anniversary team member made stops in Houston, Portland and Oklahoma City as well, en route to a Top Ten finish in total points scored in league history.

Though uber talented, playoff success eluded CarMelo the majority of his career. The best chance he had at a title was in 2009 where the Nuggets fell short to the eventual champions, Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. He only made it out of the first round one other time.

His performances with the USA Olympic team has definitely bolstered the 6 '7'’ forwards resume. The three time olympic gold medalist is the all time leader in appearance with 31, first in rebounds and second only behind Kevin Durant in points scored internationally.

But where does he rank all time?

Being born in the late 1900’s, I had the privilege of watching Melo’s career unfold right before my eyes. From his days at Oak Hill Academy where he went toe to toe with longtime friend and rival LeBron James in a Nationally Televised high school game, to a National Championship victory after an impressive tournament run during his lone college season at Syracuse where he was named the Most Outstanding of the 2003 Final Four, all the way to his clutch performances at Madison Square Garden. Carmelo has always delivered!!

However when discussing the greats, where will Carmelo Anthony end up? He was never known for his defense and I'm sure Nuggets fans haven’t forgotten how he forced his way out of Denver for greener pastures in New York. And let's gloss over the season he spent with Russ and PG13, as Carmelo was clearly out of his prime and the thoughts of a big three quickly materialized into a big two and a half.

Hindsight being what it is, Melo probably should have waited on a contract extension that prevented him from potentially teaming up with Dwayne Wade and Lebron during the 2010 offseason.

Nevertheless, a trip to the Hall of Fame is undeniable for the legend who averaged 22.5 points per game during 19 seasons. The 6 time all Nba selection sits 9th on the all time scoring list with 28,289 points.

In my opinion, Melo is in the top ten at his position. Not too many players had his pension for putting the ball in the hoop. The true definition of a “go to scorer”. Thanks Melo for the memories.

All-NBA Snub Costs Grizzlies Star Ja Morant To Miss Out On $39 Million Bonus

After being snubbed on the NBA’s All-NBA Teams, Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant will miss out on a $39 million bonus. Is this the NBA’s way of punishing Morant for his recent behavior? We discuss it here!

By: Omar Cook

Despite averaging leading Memphis to a top playoff seed, averaging 26 points, 8 assists, nearly 6 rebounds, Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant did not secure a spot in any of the three All-NBA teams announced on Wednesday, May 10. Unfortunately, for the Grizzlies star this snub will have significant financial implications, ultimately resulting in the loss of $39 million for Morant. $39 million is crazy, doesn’t matter who you are.

Last year, Morant inked a five-year designated rookie max extension with the Grizzlies worth $192.2 million. However, he missed out on the chance to earn up to $231.4 million, which is 30% of the salary cap, as he was not named to any All-NBA teams this year.

Morant only received 10 second-team votes and 14 third-team votes on the 100 ballots, leaving him significantly short of securing an All-NBA recognition.

Morant was handed an eight-game suspension by the NBA in March after he shared a video on Instagram Live in which he brandished a handgun at a nightclub in Denver. Which opens up the question, is this a way for the league to punish Morant for his behavior?

There’s certainly been some speculation amongst fans that the NBA blackballed Morant from the All-NBA team but there is also a lesson to be learned here. Morant as a star in the NBA has to know that image is everything, and while he may be having harmless fun like we’ve all had in our 20s, the league may not see it the same way.

Bronny James Commits to USC

Bronny James makes his college decision by committing to USC, igniting a new era of basketball for the Trojans. We discuss it here!

By: Joshua Martin

After much speculation, it's official!! Bronny James Jr., the eldest son of NBA Legend LeBron James, is staying on the West Coast and attending the University of Southern California.

Bronny wrote in his instagram caption “Fight On ✌🏿 #committed” while dawning his Sierra Canyon High School basketball uniform in the Trojans’ locker room.

After the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Golden State Warriors in Game 3 of the western conference semifinals, LeBron said in a postgame press conference that his son picked “a great university.”

Unless it was one of my great-grandmothers or great-grandfathers or someone way before my time, to my knowledge this is the first one out of the James Gang to go to college.
— LeBron James

Currently James Jr. ranks as a top 5 point guard according to ESPN and as a Trojan, Bronny has a chance to develop his impressive on ball defensive skills, while also honing his scoring ability and playmaking skills.

Bronny’s decision was interesting to say the least. Especially since the Trojans haven't made it to a Final Four since 1954 and hasn't had a deep tournament run in decades. One could only speculate that the allure of staying close to family and the bright and sandy beaches of SoCal played a major role in his decision.

Ask yourself. How often has college basketball been the topic of conversation for fans of USC’s athletic program? It’s usually the coliseum for a Trojan football game on saturdays. With Bronny on campus, the buzz around the Galen Center is destined to become a fever pitch.

Unlike most prospects, Bronny’s game has been under the microscope since becoming a rising freshman at Sierra Canyon High School. Initially, many believed his growth was small and incremental but after an impressive performance at this year's McDonald's All American game, the adulation of Bronny’s game has been on the rise. And rightfully so.

The 6-foot-3 athlete has great speed and lateral quickness and the explosiveness that should transition nicely to the college game. A pure shooting stroke with range and the mental capacity to out-think opponents at the amateur level.

USC’s basketball program has been buried behind the dominance of its cross town rival UCLA with its 11 National Championships over 60 seasons. The Trojans have had their moments but even the best USC teams can't hold a candle to the squads that dominated the sport during the Wooden era. We are now living in a new reality. As of now, Bronny provides USC with the sort of glitz and glamor it has never had.

Opting to avoid traditional blue blood programs, it's obvious Bronny wants to be a part of history. If the Trojans are successful next season, Bronny could help snap a 70 year Final Four drought, a 39 year PAC 12 title drought and it's been 53 years since USC finished in the top 5.

Obviously, his dad didn’t go to school. His mom didn’t go to college. It’s super cool. … USC is getting a great kid. He’s there to play basketball, [but] they’re going to be super surprised at how great a kid he is, even though they’ve been recruiting him for a while.
— LeBron James

Joel Embiid Named 2023 NBA MVP

Joel Embiid, the dominant center for the Philadelphia 76ers, has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2022-2023 NBA season. We discuss it here!

Joel Embiid, the dominant center for the Philadelphia 76ers, has been named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2022-2023 NBA season. The award is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and phenomenal performances throughout the season, which helped lead the 76ers get a top 3 seed in the Eastern Conference and a legitimate shot at the NBA championship.

The MVP race appeared to be a closely contested battle during the season, but ultimately ended in a landslide victory for Embiid. He secured 73 out of the 100 first-place votes available, with a total of 915 votes. Jokic followed with 15 first-place votes and a total of 674 votes, while Antetokounmpo received 12 first-place votes and a total of 606 votes. Boston Celtics' forward Jayson Tatum and Oklahoma City Thunder's guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Embiid's journey to the top of the NBA has been filled with challenges and obstacles, but his resilience and determination have never wavered. After being drafted in 2014, Embiid battled injuries that kept him off the court for much of his first few seasons. However, he remained devoted in his commitment to the game, and when he finally stepped onto the court, he proved himself to be a force to be reckoned with.

Embiid's performance in the 2022-2023 season was nothing short of spectacular. He averaged 33.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.7 blocks per game, leading the league in scoring. He also shot an impressive 54% from the field, including 33.0% from three-point range.

But Embiid's impact went beyond just his individual statistics. He was a dominant force on both ends of the court, anchoring the 76ers' defense and leading them to the best record in the Eastern Conference. His ability to score in a variety of ways, whether it be in the post, from mid-range, or from beyond the arc, made him virtually unstoppable.

Embiid's MVP award is a fitting recognition of his remarkable season and his outstanding contributions to the NBA. He joins a long list of NBA legends who have earned the prestigious award, and his name will forever be etched in NBA history as one of the greatest players to ever grace the court.

Embiid's victory means that centers have claimed the award for three consecutive seasons, following Jokic's back-to-back wins. Additionally, an international player has won the award for the fifth year in a row, starting from Antetokounmpo's victories in the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Prior to the last five years, only three international players had won the MVP, Hakeem Olajuwon in 1993-94, Steve Nash in 2005-06, and Dirk Nowitzki in 2006-07.

As the NBA playoffs continue, all eyes will be on Embiid and the 76ers as they look to make a deep run and bring a championship to Philadelphia. The 76ers are currently in round 2 facing the Boston Celtics with the series split at 1-1. With Embiid leading the way, anything is possible, and fans around the world are eagerly anticipating what promises to be an unforgettable postseason run.

Embiid has given us a reminder to always speak things into existence from a tweet he tweeted back in 2014. Anything is possible so always remember to speak greatness into your life.

Former Chicago Bulls star Joakim Noah has announced the launch of the "One Basketball League" in Chicago this month. In partnership with 28 violence prevention groups, the program is designed for men aged 16 to 25 living in the city's west and south sides. It will offer financial incentives for players and also provide off-court programs and job opportunities.

“The city is divided in a lot of ways, and one of the ways to unify this city is through hoop. Just like we were talking about, some of my best friends to this day are from playing basketball,” Noah stated to Stadium’s Shams Charania. “That’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to unify this city, so we’re working with 28 violence prevention groups and we’re doing a big tournament. We’re unifying the city through this tournament and bringing in all the OGs. Obviously, the basketball is the way to bring them in, but the programs that come in after is the real peace work. I’m really proud of it.”

Noah left the Bulls after the 2016 season to join the Knicks, but his connection to Chicago remained strong. Noah has been involved in various philanthropic initiatives, including the Noah's Arc Foundation aimed at supporting children in the area. He also spearheaded the Peace Basketball Tournaments aimed at ending gang violence and promoted the "Rock Your Drop" necklaces to further his mission of ending gang violence in the city.

The partnership between the basketball star and Nike began in 2007. Over the years, they have collaborated on 15 signature shoe releases, with the 16th expected to come out soon. The 2023 NFL Draft witnessed a groundbreaking moment in the history for the culture as three black quarterbacks, Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, and Anthony Richardson, were drafted within the first five picks. This is a significant achievement for the black community, especially given the challenges that African American quarterbacks have faced in the past.

Ultimately, the Carolina Panthers selected Bryce Young with the number 1 overall pick. Young, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner, is a talented quarterback who possesses excellent leadership skills, agility, and a strong arm. His exceptional performance in college football, coupled with his incredible work ethic, made him a prime candidate for the top pick.

C.J. Stroud, who played for Ohio State, was drafted as the second overall pick by the Houston Texans. Stroud is a skilled quarterback who is known for his accuracy and ability to read defenses. He had an outstanding college career, and his selection in the top five picks is a testament to his talent and hard work.

Lastly, Anthony Richardson, who played for the University of Florida, was drafted as the fourth overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts. Richardson is a dual-threat quarterback who is known for his speed and agility. His incredible performance in college football, coupled with his impressive physical attributes, made him an attractive prospect for the Colts. The selection of these three black quarterbacks in the top five picks is a significant achievement for the NFL and a sign of progress towards greater diversity and inclusion in the league.

More from the 2023 NFL Draft

The Texans were eager to acquire top level prospects on both sides of the ball. After making a deal with the Arizona Cardinals to move up to pick 3, Houston acquired who many feel was the top overall prospect in this year's class, edge rusher from the University of Alabama Will Anderson Jr. A monster of an athlete with quick hands and an extremely high motor.

Rounding out the top 5 was the Seattle Seahawks selecting Devon Witherspoon, defensive back from the university of Illinois. With the attitude and athletic profile scouts gush over, Witherspoon has a chance to become a high impact player immediately.

The middle of the draft saw teams focusing on interior lineman and defensive difference makers. The Philadelphia Eagles continue to knock this drafting thing out of the park with their selection of Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia at pick 9. A disruptive force in the interior who fell due to off the field concerns.

Grinding all my life for this moment.
— Jalen Carter

After 19 consecutive picks to begin the draft without a wide receiver, four in a row came off the board to start the 20s.

The bottom of the draft usually spots pretty good teams who simply are looking to add depth or crazy value. With no topflight prospect still on the board at 26, The Cowboys selected Mazi Smith, DT, University of Michigan much to the delight of Dallas’s All Pro edge rusher Micah Parson.

To round out the first round, the two participants in last season’s Super Bowl added to their defense with Nolan Smith, OLB, Georgia and Felix Anudike-Uzomah, DE, Kansas State respectively at 30 and 31.

KEY NOTES from the Draft

The running back position saw a slight resurgence with 2 players chosen within the top 12 picks. (Pick 8 - Atlanta Falcons Bijan Robinson,Texas; Pick 12 - Detroit Lions, Jahmyr Gibbs, Alabama)

The selection of Gibbs at pick 12 was probably the most surprising selection on Day 1. With Gibbs even being surprised by the pick.

"I feel great," Gibbs said. "I didn't know I would get picked as high as I did because running backs don't get picked as high in this new age and new era of the NFL draft, but it was pretty shocking to me.” - Jahmyr Gibbs, ESPN

Alabama also sets a NFL Draft record with 15 consecutive seasons with a draft pick in the first round. This is also the third time in the last four years a Alabama QB was taken in the first round.

Congratulations to all of the young men drafted on opening day. It's an honor to be a first round pick and potentially life altering for them and their families for generations. Now that their draft fates are sealed, it's time for these guys to live up to the hype!! We’ll be watching!!

Lamar Jackson and Ravens Agree to NFL Record Five-year, $260 Million Contract

Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson agreed to an NFL record five-year, $260 million contract, effectively ending an ongoing battle of contract negotiations between Jackson and the Ravens organization. We discuss it here!

By: Omar Cook

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday that the Ravens and star quarterback Lamar Jackson have come to an agreement on a five-year, $260 million contract, effectively ending an ongoing battle of contract negotiations between Jackson and the Ravens organization.

The agreement was reached just a few hours prior to the start of the 2023 NFL Draft. Josina Anderson reports that the contract comes with $185 million in guaranteed money.

"You know, for the last few months, there's been a lot of he's said, she's said," Jackson stated in a video posted by the Ravens. "A lot of nail-biting, a lot of head scratching going on, but for the next five years, it's a lot of flock going on. Let's go, baby. Let's go. Let's go, man. Can't wait to get there. Can't wait to be there. Can't wait to light up M&T (Bank Stadium) for the next five years, man. Let's get it."

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the negotiations for a substantial contract between Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens have been ongoing for over two years. Rapoport added that after Jalen Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million deal 10 days ago, the Ravens made a competitive offer that surpassed it.

Jackson took over as the starting quarterback midway through his rookie campaign in 2018, has been dominant on the field ever since. In his first complete season, he won the NFL MVP award in 2019 after throwing for 3,127 yards and a league-leading 36 touchdown passes, as well as rushing for 1,206 yards and seven scores.

Jackson's versatile skills as a dual threat QB make him a formidable threat for defenses. The Ravens have tailored their offensive strategy around his running prowess, but Jackson's underrated abilities as a pocket passer and with his arm have played a crucial role in his success. His massive new contract is a testament to his exceptional all-around talents.

First Week of NBA Playoff Basketball Recap

The NBA Playoffs kicked off with a bang we take a closer look at the highlights and lowlights of the first week, from unexpected upsets to standout players and controversial moments. We discuss it here!

By: Joshua Martin

A week’s worth of NBA Playoff basketball is officially in the books and well… This might be the most compelling first round we've ever seen.

From marquee players suffering untimely injuries, to blowouts of the 20 plus point variety, stompings and suspensions, this year’s playoffs have featured a little bit of everything so far.

We all know things can change quickly and so will our opinions on each of these remaining teams. But that's the beauty of postseason basketball: one game, one series can change the narrative around any organization.

Here are some of my observations…

The Knicks are legit and have their sights on a ECF berth.

It's amazing what great point guard play can do for a once moribund franchise. Jalen Bronsun might be the greatest off season acquisition of the past few years. He, along with Josh Hart, Julius Randle, Mitch Robinson and R.J. Barrett has revitalized the New York Knicks and has them in position to pull off the upset in this 4 versus 5 seed matchup. A suffocating New York Knicks defense forced Donavon Mitchell to have one of the worst performances of his playoff career in game 4, going 5 for 18 from the floor, with his teammates also turning in lackluster performances.

“The way we lost sucks. We can’t hang our heads and ultimately give up. We’re not that type of group. Like I said, we’ll be ready for Game 5.” - Donavan Mitchell, Yahoo Sports

“Spida” Mitchell deserves our collective benefit of the doubt but the way the Knicks are playing, it's hard to envision the Cavaliers climbing out of a 3-1 hole.

The Best Series of The first round has been the Warriors vs the Kings.

The Kings are maturing right before our eyes. The coach of the Year Mike Brown and the league’s most clutch player De'aaron Fox are going toe to toe with the defending champs and don't seem to be phased by the bright lights of the postseason at all.  Draymond’s stomp on the chest of Kings big man Domantas Sabonis, forced the dubs emotional leader to sit in game 3 but the Warriors protected their home court and head back to Sac-town tied 2-2. Albeit with controversy, with Steph Curry inadvertently calling a timeout without realizing they were out of them after a challenge call didn't go in the Warriors favor moments earlier. Kings Forward Harrison Barnes eventually missed the game winning 3 point shot but the events leading up to the potential buzzer beater left many wondering who was to blame for such a crucial gaffe in such a pivotal moment.

Dub-Nation can collectively take a deep breath as the mishap is only a footnote in what has been an excellent series. The Kings have home court advantage with 2 of the next 3 games in Sacramento and the Warriors have been notoriously awful on the road this season. In order for them to advance they will have to win at least one game on the road.

The Bucks aren’t going anywhere without a healthy Giannis.

A back contusion has forced Giannis Antekounmpo to miss the last two games for the Milwaukee Bucks and they are in serious trouble. “Playoff Jimmy” is a real thing and the resilient with yesterday he scored a Miami Heat playoff record by scoring 56, the battle tested Miami Heat are showing the league how important it is to have your Superstars available during the final stretch of the season. Two blowout victories have the Heat in position to pull off the ultra rare feat of a 8 seed upsetting a 1 seed. The Greek Freak did return for Game 4 but it wasn’t much the Bucks could do to contain Jimmy, but it’s still not over anything is possible.

Are the 76ers for real?

The Philadelphia 76ers were undoubtedly the most impressive team during the first week of games. Not only did they sweep their opponent, the Brooklyn Nets, but they did so without Joel Embiid in game 4 because of injuries. James Harden and Tyrese Maxey blitzed the Nets by constantly attacking the interior and setting up teammates for easy shots. We even got a Tobias Harris sighting, as he is often the forgotten man on a team filled with talent and trustworthy vets. After trading away KD and Kyrie, no one expected the Nets to truly contend with the East’s elite but give the 6ixers credit, they took care of business and now one of the title favorites gets a much needed break as they await the winner of the Hawks versus Celtics series.

RusselL Westbrook quiets critics with impressive play, momentarily.

Russ may be having the greatest stretch ever in his hall of fame career. He has shot 54% from the floor and is currently 8 of 16 from three in this first round series against the Suns. We can expect those numbers to taper off a little but one thing is for sure, Russ never cheats us on effort. The L.A. Clippers have once again been devastatingly hit with the injury bug and all in all honesty should be getting blown out by this Phoenix Suns team littered with allstars and future hall of famers. Currently, as the lone “star” on a team filled with championship aspirations, Russ’s amazing play has the Clippers competitive.

Strong words from his former teammate Kevin Durant and longtime friend Chris Paul.

Lebron and AD leading Lakers resurgence.

Despite lackluster play from a few of their mid season acquisitions, the Lakers are enjoying a 3-1 series lead after last night thrilling overtime heading in game 4. LeBron had a game for the ages with his 20 point 20 rebound performance last night. Behind the magnificent play of Anthony Davis and the consistency of Lebron James, the Lakers may be the scariest team in the western conference. The on court antics of Dillon Brooks has dominated headlines but no one can deny the legitimacy of their title hopes, especially since the team made drastic changes to their roster a few months ago acquiring the likes of D’Angelo Russel, Jarred Vanderbilt and Malik Beasly. The Grizzlies have been snake bitten with major injuries to their frontcourt with Steven Adams and Brandon Clarke not being able to suit up and recently Ja Morant injured his hand after a hard fall in game 1. The basketball gods seem to be favoring the Lakers as much as any team in recent memory. Inconsistent play from the Grizzlies and injuries have the Lakers super confident and they should be. I hope “Dillon the Villain” realizes it's never a good idea to come at the King.

On January 2, the world watched in shock as Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, collapsed on live tv during a Monday Night NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital in a scary situation.

3 months later, Hamlin is finally cleared to return to playing football. Bills general manager Brandon Beane relayed the news. “He’s fully cleared, he’s here, and he is of the mindset. He’s in a great head space to come back and make his return,” Beane said of Hamlin, according to ESPN. Hamlin has spent the past few months in physical therapy, working with doctors and has been attending a few team practices.

“When he left Cincinnati, he came here, it was Buffalo General [Hospital]. He saw a couple of specialists here in Buffalo, and then, since then, he’s seen three additional specialists, most recently on Friday (April 14), and they’re all in agreement. It’s not 2-1 or 3-1 or anything like that. They’re all in lockstep of what this was and that he’s cleared, resumed full activities just like anyone else who was coming back from an injury or whatever,” Beane stated.

On Tuesday, Hamlin gave his first news conference since the event happened and stated that doctors concluded it was a result of commotio cordis, "an extremely rare consequence of blunt force trauma to the heart that happens at exactly the wrong time in the heart rhythm, causing the heart to stop beating effective," per the American Heart Association, which caused him to suffer cardiac arrest on the field.

"My heart is still in the game. I love the game. It is something I want to prove to myself, not nobody else," Hamlin said. "I just wanna show people that that fear is a choice that you can keep going in something without having the answers and without knowing what's at the end of the tunnel. Or you might feel anxious, you might feel any type of way, but you just keep putting that right foot in front of the left one, and you keep going. I want to stand for that."

Many people after witnessing the event believed that that would be Hamlin’s last time playing in an NFL game after such a traumatic experience but Hamlin is determined to keep going.

"Being around my teammates, the camaraderie of the sport of football, you know, that's what makes this sport the best in the world, is the brotherhood that it creates, the unity that it creates between all people of all aspects of life and just different journeys, it brings them together for one common goal," Hamlin said. "And I feel like that's a direct correlation of what happened to me that night, you know, just bringing people together in prayer, love, but that's what this sport does as well, so my heart is in it completely and it takes a lot to be great in this game, and I got a long way to go. I got a long journey to go, but I'm committed to it each day, day in, day out."

We wish nothing but the best for Hamlin as the 25 year old safety looks to make his NFL return in what will be inspiring for millions of people to see.

Jalen Hurts Signs Record Breaking Contract Extension with the Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts signs the biggest contract in terms of average value in NFL history, a massive $255 million extension over the next five years. We discuss it here!

Jalen Hurts, 24, and this year’s Super Bowl Runner Ups, the Philadelphia Eagles, have agreed to a massive contract extension worth a stunning $255 million over the next five years for the quarterback’s services. Hurts’ deal is the biggest contract in terms of average value in NFL history.

Keeping the main thing in Philly.
— Eagles

The news was also confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Just in case you had any doubts.

Leading the Eagles to a 14-1 record as a starter in 2022, the uber talented dual threat quarterback has definitely earned this mega deal. A second round pick in 2020, Jalen took over for a struggling Carson Wentz and hasn't looked back since. He has put together a solid 23-11 record as a starter for the Eagles after Wentz was traded the following offseason.

After a dominating team performance against the New York Giants during the playoffs this past January, Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Nick Sirianni expressed how important Jalen was to his football team.

I know this is high praise, but to have him out there is like having — I shouldn’t even go there — it’s like having Michael Jordan out there. He’s your leader. He’s your guy.
— Nick Sirianni

In a similar fashion, Eagles’ owner Jeffrey Lurie had this to say to the media in regards of Hurts’ status in the league.

The hardest part, for sure, is the scarcity of really good quarterbacks, and we got one, and we got a very special player.
— Jeffrey Lurie

According to sources, the deal also includes a no trade clause which is the first in team history.

Hurts was a legitimate MVP candidate last season, and at times the front runner, racking up over 4,300 yards through the air and ground with an impressive 22 touchdowns to only six interceptions with 13 additional scores rushing. The 43 total touchdowns surpassed Eagles great Donovan McNabb for most ever in a single season in franchise history.

He showed tremendous growth as a passer throughout his second season as a full time starter. One of his most iconic performances from last season came in the most crucial game, the Super Bowl. Going toe to toe with Patrick Mahommes and the Kansas City Chiefs, Hurts racked up 374 total yards and four touchdowns with only one turnover that eventually led to the Chiefs victory.

The Eagles made a smart decision by immediately locking up their quarterback of the future without letting things stall because of contract negotiations. Hmmm, now imagine a world where the Ravens acted similarly in regards to Lamar Jackson.

Wishful thinking i guess…

Previewing the 2023 NBA Play-In Tournament

Get ready for the 2023 NBA Play-In Tournament! Read our preview of the matchup schedule and predictions. We discuss it here!

Finally!!

The 2022-2023 NBA regular season is officially in the books and now 20 teams have the opportunity to compete for the prestigious Larry O’Brien Trophy. With so much chaos down the stretch, we now have a complete look at the playoffs and play-in tournament.

NBA Playoff Picture 2023 by NBA.com

The final day of the regular season saw several teams jockeying for playoff position in the uber competitive Western Conference.

The Los Angeles Lakers faced somewhat of a test against the Utah Jazz, who were playing without its regular rotation of players but Lebron James flexed his stroke from deep draining 8 of 14 threes and totaling 36 points as the Lakers locked in their position in the play-in tournament.

The T-Wolves and Pelicans were also in a bout that had significant playoff ramifications but unfortunately a heated exchange between Rudy Gobert and Kyle Anderson stole the headlines.

Minnesota eventually won securing their position in the play-in but lost a key contributor in Jaden McDaniels, fracturing his hand after punching a wall on his way to the locker room.

The Eastern Conference wasn't as exciting with playoff positions set in stone. Four of the top six seeds suffered losses with the majority of them resting starters to prepare for the playoff push.

2023 NBA Play-In Tournament matchup schedule

Play-In Game 1: (8) Atlanta at (7 Miami)

No one mucks up an opposing team's game plan like the Miami Heat. Both teams were inconsistent for the majority of the season but “Playoff Jimmy” is real. I like the Heat to advance. Sorry Trae…

Play-In Game 2: (8) Minnesota at (7) LA Lakers

No Rudy? No problem… The Lakers definitely caught a break with the Timberwolves unforeseen inner turmoil and with the three time Defensive player of the year facing a 1 game suspension imposed by the team, The Lakers win easily…

Play-In Game 3: (10) Chicago at (9) Toronto

Two veteran laden teams that undoubtedly had higher expectations heading into the season. This might be the most competitive out of the four games during the play-in. I'm a personal fan of great guard play and defense. Raptors in a close one.

Play-In Game 4: (10) Oklahoma City at (9) New Orleans

Oklahoma City may be the biggest surprise this season. Yes they have talent but they are also super young and inexperienced. Despite numerous injuries, The Pelicans somehow won enough games to make it in but unfortunately their postseason will end Wednesday night. Shai and the endless supply of Williams at the Thunder’s disposal will advance to the next round.

The Playoffs are where legends are made and after an eventful regular season I'm pretty sure this year’s Playoff run will be filled with even more unforgettable moments.

LSU Dominates as the Lady Tigers Win Their First Championship in School History

LSU Lady Tigers win their first women's national title in school history with a dominating performance, led by Angel Reese as the Most Outstanding Player. We discuss it here!

It’s funny how in this country we can see the same gesture and come away with two different conclusions. It's also funny how a dominating performance by the LSU Lady tigers can be overshadowed with everything else that's going on off the court.

Let's start by giving props to Angel Reese as she wins the Tournaments Most Outstanding Player. The double double machine carried her strong regular season performance into the tournament and was undoubtedly the team's emotional leader.

Jasmine Carson

Jasmine Carson

Michael Johnson via Nola.com

The Tigers got off to a hot start shooting the ball, led by Jasmine Carson’s 21 points in the first half off the bench. The senior guard was super efficient, hitting all seven of her first half shots including a three pointer off the glass right before halftime.

National Player of the year Caitlin Clark struggled to find a rhythm as she was held scoreless in the second quarter despite accumulating 14 for the half. Clark also made NCAA tournament history passing Sheryl Swoopes’ record for most points in a single NCAA women’s tournament.

The Hawkeyes comeback was valiant but short lived. Foul trouble was a major issue all night for Iowa. Late in the third quarter Iowa’s starting center picked up her fourth foul of the game while Clark simultaneously was hit with a technical foul.

The Tigers ultimately cruised to a 102 - 85 victory, which is the first women’s national title in school history.

During the closing moments of the game, the tiger’s Reese hit Clark with the “you can’t see me” gesture made popular by WWE wrestler John Cena and proceeded to point to her ring finger.

Angel Reese

Maddie Meyer via Getty Images

Clark made a similar gesture during Iowa’s Elight Eight victory versus Louisville, which drew praise from Cena.

I don’t take disrespect lightly.
— Angel Reese

Several big named athletes came to the defense of Reese after many viewed her actions as classless, including Los Angeles Lakers superstar Lebron James

Let me be clear this has nothing to do with Clark. She is an amazing player.

But…

I’m too hood, I’m too ghetto. Ya’ll told me that all year. But when other people do it, ya’ll don’t say nothing. So this is for the girls who look like me
— Angel Reese

To me “unapologetically You” equals “unapologetically Black” Keep doing your thang sis!!

Like Father Like Son Bronny James Shines in the McDonald's All American Game

Bronny James Jr. impresses at McDonald's All American Game with LeBron James in attendance. We discuss it here!

The McDonald's All American Game is an annual event that hosts some of the best highschool seniors from across the country. Every year highly touted prospects showcase their skills  with hopes of making the same impact on the March Madness stage as soon as next year.

This year’s game had the basketball world buzzing, as fans in attendance and those watching from home got a chance to see some of the game’s future stars.

Sierra Canyon High School (California) was well represented on both sides - Judea Watkins scored 25 points and led the West ladies squad to a 110 - 102 victory over the East -  with many in attendance eager to see Bronny James Jr., son of the NBA’s all time leading scorer and Los Angeles Lakers superstar Lebron James.

Talk about a full circle moment! 20 years after his first appearance Lebron was in the building to support his son.

Despite receiving some scrutiny about whether or not he deserved to be on the squad, Bronny left no doubt that he has a legitimate game and the poise to handle the pressures of being the son of “King James”. On the biggest stage Bronny delivered!

The 6’3” guard displayed his impressive stroke from deep, draining 5-for-8 totaling 15 points in the East’s 109 - 106 victory over the West. Social media attendees showered Bronny with praise pinpointing his feel for the game.

Despite not officially declaring to a school, many believe he will sign with Ohio State University with USC and Oregon also in the running. The real question is will he make it to the NBA?

What the scouts are saying??

From what I can gather, he isn’t the second coming of his dad but he does possess solid size to become a capable combo guard with elite defensive potential. He has a smooth jump shot, a vocal leader with tremendous work ethic with an incredible feel for the game.

Lebron James and Bronny James

There is no secret that Lebron wants to play with his son. Back in 2022 Lebron told the Athletic so in an interview, insinuating he will be willing to take a lower salary to make it possible.

“My last year will be played with my son. Wherever Bronny is at, that’s where I’ll be. I would do whatever it takes to play with my son for one year. It’s not about the money at that point.” - The Athletic

It is very rare that father son duos even appear in the league let alone play together. Lebron doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon with his Lakers fighting for their lives in the uber competitive Western conference.

With all we've seen from Goat James, we shouldn’t be surprised if he accomplished something that has never been seen. So far so good. Bronny can play…

Lamar Jackson Announces He Has Requested a Trade

Lamar Jackson requests a trade from the Baltimore Ravens due to contract disputes. We discuss it here!

Lamar Jackson

By: Adonis Armstrong

Lamar Jackson one of the most the talented quarterbacks to step on the field, has requested a trade from Baltimore Ravens. This news doesn’t come as a surprise as the two sides haven’t been on the same page in contract negotiations going back to last season. Jackson has been placed under the non-exclusive franchise tag, which has totaled his value with the Ravens at $32 million.

The 2019 NFL MVP, Lamar Jackson has been with the Ravens since he was drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. During his time with the team, he has set numerous records and has led the Ravens to three playoff appearances. He is known for his extraordinary running ability, as well as his strong arm and nice precision passing.

Lamar took to his twitter to reveal the news today March 27, which he revealed the team won’t match his value. Many believe that the Ravens should do everything in their power to keep Jackson, as he is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league and has the potential to lead the team to a championship. Jackson states his desire to help a team win a championship in the twitter post.

Only time will tell where Jackson will end up, but one thing is for sure, Jackson will be a highly sought after player if the Ravens do make him available for a trade.

NBA MVP Race: Embiid, Jokic, and Giannis All Eye The League's Top Award

As the NBA season draws to a close, Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo are all eyeing the NBA’s MVP Award, but who will claim trophy? We discuss it here!

Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola JokićJokic

Left to Right: Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokić

By: Joshua Martin

It's always difficult to separate the best from the best. And this year’s MVP race, more than normal, is the closest it's been in quite some time.

The newly minted Michael Jordan Trophy - awarded to the KIA NBA Most Valuable Player, doesn't reflect who is actually the best player in the league but his value to his organization. Which basically means, team context matters, along with impressive counting stats.

As the NBA season draws to a close, There are three MVP-level players who are clearly having MVP-caliber seasons.

I'm not a voter but if I had to place my money on a candidate, I would go with Embiid. The fact that Giannis and Jokic have won MVPs already benefits him greatly in this year’s race.

However, let's do our due diligence and make cases for each of the top three candidates.

1.)Why He Deserves the Trophy

2.)Why He Won't WIn It

We are literally splitting hairs with this one, which often makes debates such as this one quite contentious and fairly complicated. But let’s take it back to the basics, what do your eyes tell you?

1. Joel Embiid

“The Process” has been on a mission this season. It seems as if the 76ers recent playoff disappointments have motivated the big man to take his game to an even higher level.

1.) Embiid has the counting stats - 33.6 ppg 10.3 rbg 1.8 bpg on 55% shooting from the floor.

He leads the league in scoring and is top ten in rebounds, blocks and free throw attempts.

His team at the moment is the third seed in the East and is poised to make a strong playoff push.

He deserves the award because of his overall play. I've never seen a traditional Center with his shooting ability, the Sixers even trust Embiid to hit their technical free throws.

2.) The biggest detraction one could make is body language apparently. On a radio show on Sirius FM Radio, Hall of Fame Coach George Karl had this to say about Embiid.

“I don’t want to bad mouth Embiid because I think he’s really, really good… But he takes too many possessions off. He has lazy body language.” - George Karl

Not sure if body language should be high on the voter’s list of meaningful criteria but when you're having the type of season Embiid is having it can't all be hugs and kisses.

2. Nikola Jokic

1.) “The Joker '' is probably one of the more unique players we've ever seen. Normally when you think of an athlete dominating his or her sport, one would often envision supreme athleticism. This isn't the Joker’s style. The 6 '11 Serbian big man routinely posts video game-like numbers for a Denver Nuggets squad currently sitting atop the Western Conference.

His 24.7 ppg 11.9 rbg 9.9 apg is nothing to sneeze at either. Jokic may be the least disposable player on this list. To put it simply, the Nuggets perform as the best team in the league with Jokic and are the worst team by a mile without him.

2.) Voter fatigue may be the reason Jokic doesn't claim his 3rd consecutive MVP. Something we haven't seen since Larry Bird back in the 80’s. (1984-1986)

Unfortunately, We’ve seen this before. Many fans have grown numb to Jokic’s gaudy stat line. His poor defensive performances against elite competition doesn't help his case either.

Draymond shared his thoughts on the race on his podcast.

“Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo is who I believe the MVP race has come down to. [Nikola Jokic], incredible year, [but] as of late he’s slipped and those guys have continued to ascend. As of late the Denver Nuggets have slipped and those two teams have ascended,” Green said in the latest episode of his podcast, The Draymond Green Show, per NBC Sports Bay Area.

With this being such a tight race, how you finish is definitely more important than how you start. They are currently 5-5 in their last ten games and their once stranglehold on the West has dwindled to a 3 and half game lead.

3. Giannis Antetokounmpo

1.) “The Greek Freak” checks all the boxes. His stat line is comparable to his contemporaries on this list. He is currently averaging 31.3 ppg 11.9 rbg 5.6 apg and he has the Milwaukee Bucks atop the Eastern Conference. No one plays the game with more effort and energy on both sides of the ball. With the recent slippage of the Nuggets and Embiid’s reputation, Giannis might capture his 3rd MVP.

2.) Familiarity breeds contempt. As in the case with Jokic, we have seen this before. We all know how great Giannis is. To be honest it's not a stretch to call him the best player in the league regardless of numbers or accolades. Our numbness to his dominance exists through no fault of his own. In fact he recently voiced his frustrations with the ever evolving criteria for the MVP trophy.

“Like, I believe — and I know — that people are dominating,” the Bucks forward said, via The Athletic. “So what is the MVP? Is it the guy who scores the most points? Is it the guy who’s the most efficient? Is it the guy who is the most dominant? Is it the guy who is the most valuable? Sometimes, the best player isn’t the most valuable player on the team. Like, I feel like Brook [Lopez] is such a valuable player for our team. Like [the MVP criteria] just f*****g — sorry for my language — it just changes. As I said again, I can’t control that. I can control only how I prepare for the game and try to be ready for the game.”

Hmmm… My thoughts exactly.

Vanessa Bryant Awarded $28.85 Million from L.A. County

Vanessa Bryant settles remaining claims with Los Angeles County for $28.85 million following the helicopter crash that killed her husband Kobe Bryant, daughter Gianna, and seven others. We discuss it here!

Vanessa Bryant

By: Joshua Martin

Vanessa Bryant, wife of the late Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, has agreed to settle her remaining claims with Los Angeles County for $28.85 million dollars.

According to ABC News, Vanessa Bryant attorney Luis Li addressed the ruling in a statement.

“Today marks the successful culmination of Mrs. Bryant's courageous battle to hold accountable those who engaged in this grotesque conduct. She fought for her husband, her daughter, and all those in the community whose deceased family were treated with similar disrespect. We hope her victory at trial and this settlement will put an end to this practice” - Luis Li, Vanessa Bryant's attorney

Co-plaintiff Chris Chester, whose wife and daughter were also killed in the crash, also settled for $19.95 million.

LA County attorneys believe the settlement is “fair and reasonable” and hopefully allows the Bryant and Chester families to heal from their loss.

The Byrant Family

Kobe, Gianna and others connected to the Mamba Sports Academy were headed to Thousand Oaks for a youth basketball game when the helicopter they were traveling in crashed killing all nine passengers onboard in the Calabasas Hills west of L.A.

Several months later Vanessa Bryant filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles County, claiming that the first responders took photos of her deceased husband and child as “souvenirs” and inappropriately shared them with others.

In August 2022, a jury awarded Bryant $16 million after she sued the county for negligence and invasion of privacy.

Federal officials blame pilot error as the cause of the crash.

Britney Griner Signs 1 Year Deal with Phoenix Mercury

Britney Griner back on the court after signing a one year deal with Phoenix Mercury.

By: Joshua Martin

After a tumultuous stint in a Russian prison that lasted nearly 10 months, the six time WNBA all star has reached a one-year agreement to sign with the team that originally selected the Center first overall back in 2013.

Griner was arrested in February of 2022 after she was accused of bringing vape canisters containing cannabis oil into the country. The canisters were prescribed but were packed inadvertently due to Griner’s haste to board a flight.

After negotiations by the Biden Administration, Griner was released in exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

In a statement following her release, Griner admitted that the experience was tough on her emotionally but the love from her supporters kept her spirits up.

“I dug deep to keep my faith and it was the love from so many of you that helped keep me going” - Britney Griner

Griner also stated her intentions on resuming her WNBA career, specifically with the Mercury.

I also want to make one thing very clear: I intend to play basketball for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury this season, and in doing so, I look forward to being able to say ‘thank you’ to those of you who advocated, wrote, and posted for me in person soon.

Love always,

BG #42

The team officially announced the two time defensive player of the year’s return with a simple caption that read

“There she is 🧡”

Griner, one of the most decorated players in her sport, has terrorized opponents with her gaudy size and presence (she stands 6 foot 9).

The start of the season is a few months away but Britney intends to pick up right where she left off. The Mercury are just excited as fans to see her make her highly anticipated return to the court.

Phoenix tips off their 2023 season on May 19th.

Recap of the 2023 NBA All Star Weekend in Salt Lake City

Recap of the 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City featuring Rising Stars Challenge, Celebrity Game, HBCU Classic, Skills Challenge, 3-Point Contest, Slam Dunk Contest, and the All-Star Game with Jayson Tatum as MVP.

Jason Tatum NBA All Star weekend

By: Joshua Martin

Lebron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum, Joel Embiid, Ja Morant, and more!!

Salt Lake City, Utah was this year's destination the entire NBA world ascended upon for this year’s All-star weekend. The NBA’s brightest stars and celebrities alike were center stage as they showcased their abilities across a packed weekend full of exciting events for basketball fans.

Friday Night

The Jordan Rising Stars Challenge featured four teams coached by former NBA stars. Team Pau, Team Deron, Team Joakim and Team Jason competed in a mini tournament involving 21 rookie and second year NBA  players along with a few players from the G League. Team Pau won the tournament while Pelicans Guard Jose Alvarado took home the tournament MVP trophy. .

The NBA Ruffles All Star Celebrity game featured a cross section of athletes and entertainers, which included Grammy Award winning rapper 21 Savage, musicians Cordae and Jonelle Monae, NFL Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson and recently retired MLB player Albert Pujols. The MVP of the game, D.K. Metcalf, was a clear overwhelming presence on the court and instantly became a crowd favorite with his powerful dunks. Team Dwayne Wade, NBA Legend,  defeated Team Ryan Smith, Governor of Utah, in a highly competitive game that came down to a half court heave at the buzzer.

Saturday Night

NBA x HBCU Classic

The highly anticipated NBA HBCU Classic between Grambling State University and their long time rival Southern University gave a much needed spotlight to Historically Black Colleges. On the campus of the University of Utah, Grambling captured the victory as NBA analyst Stephanie Ready and Hall of Famer Grant Hill called the game. Southern Head coach Sean Woods applauded the NBA for the exposure.

The NBA has given us this platform, but this isn’t the end. We’re getting more TV exposure, so you’re starting to see really big-time games. And with the transfer portal now, we’re getting transfers coming in from Power 5 schools. The talent pool is rising in our league.
— Sean Woods

As part of their ongoing commitments to HBCUs, NBA and AT&T each donated $100,000 to Grambling State and Southern University.

In the 2023 KIa Skills Challenge, Team Jazz (Jordan Clarkson, Walker Kessler, and Collin Sexton) defeated Team Antetokounmpo (Thanasis and Alex Antetokounmpo, along with Jrue Holiday) and Team Rooks (Paolo Banchero, Jaden Ivey, and Jabari Smith) in front of their hometown crowd after trailing early.

The 2023 Starry 3-Point Contest featured some of the best shooters in the league today. The 8-man field included Tyrese Haliburton of the Indiana Pacers, Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat, Buddy Heild of the Indiana Pacers, Kevin Hueter of the Sacramento Kings, Lauri Markkanen of the Utah Jazz, Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics, Julius Randle of the New York Knicks, and the eventual champion Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers. “Dame Dolla” defeated Buddy Heild with a moneyball on his last rack in the final round. Lillard, who is a superstar in this league, said winning the event undoubtedly made him one of the greatest shooters ever.

I think all the best shooters in the history of our game, most of them have one of these… I just wanted to get it done at least one time. So I’m happy I got it, now I can retire from it.
— Damian Lillard

Initially viewed as an afterthought, The 2023 AT&T Slam Dunk Contest was the best it's been in years. Philadelphia 76ers guard dazzled the crowd with his gravity defying dunks and creativity. Not to mention he completed all of his attempts on the first try. Houston Rockets forward Kenyon Martin Jr., New York Knicks big man Jericho Sims and New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III held their own but were no match for McClung who sealed his impressive night with an incredible 540.

Sunday Night

For the first time in All Star game history, the main event featured a pre draft where captains Lebron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo picked their teams. Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum led team Giannis to victory while also capturing the Kobe Bryant All Star MVP trophy by dropping 55 points, an all star game record previously held by Lakers forward Anthony Davis. The lack of defense and effort was jarring as the game has unfortunately dissolved into a glorified shootaround but that didn't stop JT from going after the award in honor of his childhood idol Kobe Bryant.

It’s extremely special to me. My first All-Star Game was in Chicago in 2020 when they renamed the MVP after him and I remember telling myself that someday I got to get one of those.
— Jason Tatum

The captains played limited minutes because of minor injuries.

Overall, on a scale from 1 to 10, I'll give this year's All Star weekend a 7 with a few surprises here and there. The fans were amazing and in full force but maybe the NBA should look into some warmer locations. With no set destination for 2025, L.A. would be a dope changeup!! Let’s make that happen NBA!!
