When it comes to makeup, deeper skin tones offer a stunning canvas that deserves products and techniques specifically tailored to enhance their beauty. Here are some essential tips to help you create a flawless look that highlights your unique features and celebrates your complexion.
1. Prioritize Skincare
Great makeup starts with great skin. Hydration and moisturization are key, as they prevent foundation and concealer from appearing ashy or patchy. Incorporate a moisturizer suited for your skin type, and always use sunscreen. While melanin-rich skin has some natural protection from UV rays, it’s still vulnerable to sun damage and hyperpigmentation.
2. Choose the Right Foundation
Finding the perfect foundation can be challenging, but it’s crucial. Look for brands that offer a wide range of shades and undertones—yellow, red, or neutral—to match your skin precisely. Avoid foundations that lean too light, as they can result in a gray or ashy appearance. Test the shade on your jawline or chest for the closest match, and remember that blending is key for a seamless finish.
3. Highlight and Contour with Care
Highlighting and contouring can accentuate your features beautifully when done right. For highlighters, opt for gold, bronze, or copper tones instead of silver, which may look stark. Contour with warm, deep brown shades to add dimension and structure to your face. Blend thoroughly to ensure a natural look.
4. Play with Bold Colors
Deeper skin tones can pull off vibrant colors effortlessly. Experiment with bold eyeshadows like cobalt blue, emerald green, or rich purples, which pop against darker complexions. For lips, shades like deep reds, berry tones, and even oranges look stunning. Don’t shy away from bright blushes—coral, orange, and berry shades can add a fresh, radiant glow.
5. Avoid Flashback with the Right Powders
Translucent powders can sometimes cause a white cast, especially under flash photography. Opt for finely milled setting powders with a tint that complements your skin tone. These powders help set makeup while keeping it natural-looking.
6. Focus on Brows
Bold, well-groomed brows frame the face beautifully. Use a brow pencil or pomade in a shade that matches or is slightly lighter than your natural brow color. Blend with a spoolie brush for a soft, polished look.
7. Finish with a Setting Spray
To keep your makeup fresh and vibrant all day, use a setting spray. Look for formulas designed for long wear, especially if you have oily skin.
With the right techniques and products, deeper skin tones can shine in all their richness. Experiment, embrace your natural beauty, and wear your makeup with confidence!

Crowning Glory: Celebrating Our Natural Black Hair Textures With Proper Hair Care
Black Women are leading the charge in a growing beauty supply industry, fostering community, and reclaiming ownership. We discuss it here!
By: Jayla Smith
For Black women, our hair is more than just strands; it’s a powerful expression of identity, culture, and resilience. In a world that often favors straight hair, it’s essential to celebrate and appreciate our natural textures. Understanding and caring for our hair can be a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Let’s explore how to love our hair, the best products for our textures, and why going back to basics is so important.
Celebrating Our Unique Textures
Every hair texture is beautiful, whether tightly coiled, wavy, or anything in between. Loving our natural hair is a vital act of self-acceptance. Our hair reflects our heritage and individuality, so take the time to appreciate your unique curls, coils, or waves. Recognizing the beauty in our textures is the first step toward self-love.
The Power of Quality Products
Finding the right products is essential for nurturing our natural hair. Brands like Aunt Jackie’s offer a range of affordable options designed specifically for our needs. Their Moisture Intensive Leave-In Conditioner and Curl La La Defining Curl Custard are excellent for keeping curls hydrated and defined. These products celebrate our textures without harsh ingredients, making them ideal for everyday use.
Another fantastic option is Jamaican Black Castor Oil, a beloved staple for generations. Known for its nourishing properties, this oil can promote hair growth, moisturize the scalp, and strengthen hair strands. Incorporating it into your routine can enhance shine and improve overall hair health.
Going Back to Basics
Sometimes, the best solutions come from traditional practices. Going back to basics means embracing natural ingredients and time-tested methods. Consider using simple, DIY hair masks made from avocados, bananas, or honey to provide deep conditioning. These ingredients are rich in vitamins and moisture, perfect for revitalizing dry or damaged hair.
Understanding the importance of a proper hair care routine is essential. Regular cleansing, conditioning, and moisturizing can maintain healthy hair. For example, incorporating a co-wash can keep curls hydrated without stripping them of natural oils.
Connecting with others who share similar experiences is another key aspect of loving our natural hair. Join online communities or local groups focused on natural hair care. Sharing tips, product recommendations, and personal stories can empower and uplift each other. Representation matters, and seeing others embrace their textures can inspire you to do the same.
Celebrating Your Journey
Your hair journey is personal and unique. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to caring for natural hair, so take the time to experiment and find what works for you. Celebrate each step of your journey, whether it’s learning to love your curls, mastering new styling techniques, or discovering products that nourish your hair.
Prioritizing your natural hair is an essential part of self-care. When you take the time to nurture and celebrate your hair, you’re also affirming your worth and beauty.
By recognizing the power of our unique textures, utilizing quality products, going back to basics, and connecting with our community, we can truly celebrate the beauty of our hair. Remember, your hair is an integral part of who you are, wear it proudly, love it fiercely, and always remember that it is beautiful just as it is.

The Power of Black Women-Owned Beauty Supply Stores in 2024
Black Women are leading the charge in a growing beauty supply industry, fostering community, and reclaiming ownership. We discuss it here!
Janell Stephens, founder of Camille Rose Naturals
By: Jayla Smith
For years, beauty supply stores in predominantly Black neighborhoods have been run by owners who often do not reflect or understand the communities they serve. But in 2024, a growing number of Black women are reclaiming ownership in the beauty supply business, ensuring that these stores better represent and serve the needs of Black consumers.
These women are redefining the beauty supply store experience by offering not only products but also education and empowerment. Their stores have become community hubs where customers can find culturally relevant products and resources, along with guidance on hair care, skincare, and more.
Camille Rose Naturals
One significant example is Janell Stephens, the founder of Camille Rose Naturals, who transitioned her product line into storefronts across the country. By creating her own beauty supply chain, Stephens is challenging the dominance of non-Black-owned stores in Black communities. Camille Rose Naturals doesn’t just focus on profit; it emphasizes the importance of customer care and cultural pride, giving people a place to buy products that cater specifically to their needs.
These Black women-owned beauty supply stores often double as community spaces where customers can feel seen and valued. By hiring staff who share the experiences and challenges of their clients, these businesses offer a level of trust and relatability that is often missing from other stores. The success of these businesses has led to an increase in Black ownership, paving the way for more inclusive beauty experiences while also fostering economic empowerment in underserved communities.

9 Tips and Tricks To Keep Your Skin Moisturized and Healthy
The weather is finally warming up and it’s time to show some skin! Here are 9 helpful tips and tricks to help your skin stay moisturized and glowing all summer long!
By: Emily-Ann
The weather is getting warmer and hopefully we will be able to enjoy the warmer months ahead. The weather is finally warming enough to show some skin. That’s right ladies get those wax strips, razors, and whatever else you use to help keep your skin stay glowing.
All that Netflix n’ Chill/pandemic got us ladies feeling fatigue or having cabin fever. Many of us have turned to self-care products to help us get by. I for one miss getting my nails and eyebrows done regularly at the esthetician. I am hoping that this summer will be different but I digress. Let’s get right into it shall we?
Have you ever applied lotion and walked outside, looked down and said “Yikes”. Here are some helpful tips and tricks to help your skin stay moisturized and glowing all summer long.
When you step out the shower pat dry your skin, and while it is still somewhat wet, apply your favorite body lotion. This method will keep your skin moisturized for hours. Rub it in until your skin has absorbed the product.
Using butters instead of lotions may be a better way to go if you are having trouble locking in moisture. I love to stock up on moisturizing butters during the summer months. The reason being is that many companies celebrate the arrival of spring, and summer with great scents that include butters and creams with their line. Using the same line can also help the scent stay with you all day long.
Using exfoliate like sugar rubs/scrubs can help shed your body’s dead skin cells to reveal softer and healthy skin. Please, choose alternatives if you have sensitive skin. Find natural products to decrease your exposure to harmful ingredients, which can build up over time and cause harmful toxins to build in your body. As I am getting older, and dealing with particular issues myself, I am making a huge effort to push for more natural products. If you can buy black that is an added bonus!
Keep in mind in mind that the best moisturizers have humectants, such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid in them. These ingredients draw in moisture or keep it locked in as much as possible. Keeping your skin properly nourished is key to glowing melanin skin.
Drinking water is just as important as protecting your skin with moisturizers and shower products. It's connected to so many things our bodies need to thrive and be happy. You can add fresh fruits like strawberries, cucumbers, blueberries, lemons, and limes. This adds a detoxification boost to your water along with health benefits at the same time.
Using warm to cool water when taking showers, and using harsh water like hot water can dry out the skin and appear dull. Hot water strips the natural oils and can cause that itchy, dry, and cracked appearance. Hot water leaves your pores wide open, and susceptible to fill with dirt and oils. This will reduce the occurrence of developing acne not just on the face.
Check your blood work for an in depth look at what is happening on a hormone level. Ask your medical provider to run a hormone test to rule out certain health concerns.
Treat your hyper pigmentation with treatments that are regulated by a governing medical body. Early treatment and consistency is key when treating acne scars.
Use sunscreen protection even if you think you don’t need it. We have to remember that the sun can still cause wrinkles and exposure to harmful sun rays.
I hope this helps and encourages you to do a little experimenting with different methods. Remember to do your homework diligently and be kind to your skin. Remember your skin is the largest organ on your body, yes it’s an organ so take care of it. Share with us any tips you may have that has helped with you. I know our team and readers would love to hear from you all!
Disclaimer: Please consult a doctor before trying any new products or changing dietary recommendations set out by your providers. I am not a healthcare practitioner and I am simply sharing what has worked for me over the years from trial and error.

Protective Styling: 3 Tips To Keeping Your Natural Hair Healthy And Thriving
Protective styling is a major key to for Black hair care! Here are 3 Tips to keeping your natural hair healthy and thriving!
By: Sydni Hatley
Natural hair and understanding its needs are a large part of promoting black hair care. Our hair is a lot more fragile and sensitive than most think, and therefore requires more attention. There are specific products and methods intended to promote the health and wellness of it, and if not followed it can be to our hair’s detriment.
Protective styling is just one aspect of a lot of actions that can be taken to promote the health of African American hair. Not only are we taking care of it, but we are also expressing ourselves in the process of nurturing our crowns.
Protective styling is useful all of the time, but it is especially useful in cold weather or the winter time. The dry air from cold, harsh weather easily dries out the hair shaft, depriving it of moisture. This inevitably makes the hair more susceptible to breakage. Some methods of protective styling include but are not limited to: Wigs, braids, twists, faux locs, buns, phony-pony tails, and more.
The main benefit of protective styling is that it keeps in the moisture you infuse before you put it up. The hair is wrapped around itself and insulated for the duration of your hairstyle, and therefore it is kept healthy!
With protective styling being as beneficial it is, the prep for it is just as important. Without good preparation, a protective style placed on improperly prepped hair will only be housing an unhealthy crown. With that said, this coupled with leaving it in such a state for weeks on end is simply a recipe for disaster. In light of these things. listed below are some key tips to keep your natural hair healthy and thriving under that wig, in those braids, or tucked in that bun!
1. Deep Condition on the Day Before Styling
This will help reinforce the moisture and hydration necessary to keep the hair healthy, since it will be put away for an extended period of time.
2. Get Your Oils Right!
Not all natural hair is made equally, meaning that not all natural hair is the same. Some natural hair requires more moisture while others require less. Some may respond well to heavier oils, while others may react negatively. Learn what oils your hair likes and make sure to oil up before you put your style in.
3. Trim Those Ends: Let Go To Grow!
It doesn’t hurt to do a nice trim before putting your hair up for a month or two. Gage your hair’s health and see if your ends need assistance. Usually a quick trim will help bring it to life, and promote growth within the protective style.
These are only a few pieces of advice that will help keep your hair happy while it is put away. You’ll be astonished how much it grows when it is left alone and unexposed! Remember, having it put up is just as important as letting it breathe and having it out, so make sure to have a balance of both. There are other protective styles that don’t involve fake hair or excess manipulation, and that can still give your hair a break (i.e. flat twists, individual twists, natural braids). Remember if anything, that the biggest keys to healthy hair for any and all protective styles, however, is moisturizing, using proper products, and a good trim!

Prep!
The colder seasons can dry out your follicles which could result in split ends and breakage! To avoid this battle, you need to equip your hair with all the moisture it needs. Protein-based hair masques and hot-oil/keratin treatments are the way to go! These will boost your hair for lower temperatures!
Pamper!
Don’t be afraid to overdo-it with the love! Show your curls all the care that they deserve! Add some color to your look for the fall weather, dye your hair with orange, sunset colors. Get golden highlights to add a bronzer touch to your life. Try out new twist outs, new rollers, refresh your look with the hair-paint wax! Even try cutting it! Adding a new and exciting touch to your fro will get you excited to take more care of it.
Protect!
With Prep and Pamper in mind, be sure to remember that certain things will aid the cold to try to damage your hair. Avoid heat; excessive heat is never going to end well for your hair. Try protective styling the hair with twists, braids, head-scarves, crochet styles, wigs, anything that will give your hair some time to relax and grow. Remember to use bonnets or satin pillowcases to bed as well!
While preparing, pampering, and protecting your hair, Autumn is sure to be an entertaining and fun time of the year! Enjoy the fall season with your hair blowing in the wind, happy, healthy, and free!

Companies like, Shea Moisture is now owned by Unilever. Shea Moisture was created by Nyema Tubman and Richelieu Dennis. Another well-known brand or line is Cantu is now owned by the PDC brand. Carol’s Daughter is now owned by L’Oreal, which they acquired in 2014. Check out the list of non-Black owned hair products!

Noticed A Change In Your Products Yet?
I noticed the change in the Deva Curl line when I bought their shampoo and conditioner which was geared toward curls with more need for moisture. I made a quick switch and went to Shea moisture for a minute, but found yet again the product switched up on me. My hair can tell the difference. Look up the lines that you are interested in and make the decision that is best for you.
Buying black isn’t just about supporting your own but knowing for the fact you are supporting men and women who do their thing in the beauty world. There are so many people already dipping their hands and filling their pockets with our needs to look and feel beautiful in a society that did not plan to celebrate our unique beauty and features.
I myself, have to do better in reading the labels and really paying attention to what goes into our beauty products. In the long run, dealing with toxicity levels in our bodies is harmful and throws off homeostasis and causes symptoms that have become normalized. It can effect the way your body detoxes to the way your body reacts to different beauty products.
What Does This Mean For The Consumer Of Color?
As you know or may not know we spend the most money when it comes to beauty. The estimated figured is around $7.5 billion dollars a year. This is twice the amount of our counter parts. Making a better decision involves being well informed and making the decision to better yourself and your well being. I rather purchase a beauty items that I know are made by us to fit our personal needs.
The needs of the people of color, I feel will be made a priority when its made by us for us. The level of understanding runs much more deeper, when a company has a connection to their targeted audience and consumer. It’s hard to relate to your audience when you have not had to experience any of the common situations or battles with hair or skin type. We come in all different shades of melanin.
It’s a sense of pride when you are supporting your own. We have so much buying power and yet we are always given the second thought. People like our girl Rih Rih are changing the way representation is seen and heard. Heck, she knocked out the competition with her Fenty show showcasing her lingerie line. I am a big fan of her makeup line as well. Let’s continue the path and make it possible to be bosses and make powerful moves in the music, beauty, education, film industry and everything in between.

Natural Hair Journey: A Love And Hate Relationship
The natural hair journey is a journey which includes self growth and appreciation for your natural hair, but it also has its ups and downs! We discuss it here!
“There is a fine line between love and hate”
By: Emily-Ann
Speaking of relationships, I am referring to the personal relationship you have with your hair, not the romantic one you look for all your life, and stumble on in your 30’s just before giving up. Yes, the relationship you have with your hair, the one that made you look for the perfect bottle of shampoo and conditioner at the beauty supply store and the right combination of oils, moisturizers, and (DC) deep conditioners.
This natural hair relationship can bring on some sleepless nights with you trying to figure out if the styling product or tool is right for you. The countless hours of watching Youtube tutorials and still finding it difficult to execute. The fights you have with your hair when cooperation is all you want. Instead, your hair feels like being stubborn and out of control and you are almost on the edge of calling it a quits. Then something good happens, a stranger or friend compliments you on your hair, and you realize things are not so bad after all.
I am indeed comparing our beautiful curly hair to something like a romantic relationship. I have lost count how many times I have had emotional distress because of it. I wanted to express that even veterans in the game still get annoyed, and it is normal. As much as I praise natural hair, it can be very challenging and difficult to handle. Now I am not saying this to turn you away from becoming natural or to discontinue on your natural journey, but to encourage you as this is something we all go through.
If things are not complicated enough you then have to navigate your way through our current society. Ducking curious hands and questions that want to touch. Looking at social media and seeing another form of culture apportion by other trend followers. Our ancestors endured many things during their captivity, life in the new world, and constantly searching for ways to adapt. We become a chameleon of sorts.
We face discrimination from family, strangers, and friends, like when someone says “I couldn’t go natural, I don’t know how you do it”. If shade isn’t being thrown your way, it's the ridiculous questions. Texture discrimination is real, workplace vulnerability, and wash day can take some time to get used to. All these things can make you question whether or not you are doing the right thing.
I’ll give you an example, I have a coworker who I adore. Her comments do get to me sometimes. Comments like, “I like your hair better when it is relaxed.” It’s her opinion but it’s comments like that I’ve had to deal with on a regular basis. This is an older, and mature woman of color saying this. I roll my eyes and change the subject.
I am here being transparent with you, because in a world with IG models, trend followers, and setters, I think this world needs a little more authenticity. We are constantly being shown unrealistic images on how we should look, act, and sound in the beauty world. It is okay to do your glow up at a different pace. Your hair is beautiful no matter what state it’s in or texture.
Being natural is just as hard if not more so without additional comments and stares. While others pay millions of dollars to look like us we are born this way. It’s time we start encouraging ourselves and others to embrace our unmatched beauty as a black culture. A healthy attitude towards social media is also key, as well all are aware of the dangers of low self-esteem and the beauty world.
Here's a question for you, did you think that being natural would be easier or less expensive? I sure did, not only was I shocked with the constant maintenance and how expensive it can be. Yes, I have second thoughts about being natural, it’s completely understandable. Now with the coronavirus pandemic keeping us indoors for now. You now have time to do little research or even make new changes to your hair care regimen. Now you have the time, the only setback is many of our beauty supply stores are close due to the COVID-19. Online stores will be your best friend right now. Take advantage of this time to educate yourself.

Grow it, Show it! 4 Tips For Growing Your Natural Hair
Natural hair is finally getting the respect it deserves! Here are 4 tips that will help your natural hair flourish!
By: Lauryn Bass
Natural hair is finally getting the respect it deserves, honey! The curls that crown the Queens and Kings of this earth are thriving and I am here-for-it. No matter what the shape or form, our hair needs lots of care and everyone has their own techniques for maintaining its health and growth, but sometimes the length just seems stunted. Aside from the shrinkage, the size of your afro just seems to be remaining the same, yeah? Here are 4 solutions to boost your puff to flourish.
1. Try Tea Tree Or Peppermint oil!
These oils have been said to remove dead skin cells from your scalp which allows for the hair follicles to spring back into life! It also helps all the love and nutrients that you’ve added to your hair gain unlimited access to do what you want it to do! Also, when you use it, it creates this breezy feeling in your scalp that is actually a rush of oxygen flowing which is also a good indicator of future growth!
2. Deep condition!
Deep conditioners are so great at penetrating the hair shaft and replacing dryness with lots of proteins that strengthen the hair. As your hair gets stronger, it reduces shedding and breakage. It provides moisture for hair that may not get all the care that it needs during your busy schedule. Make sure to research the different kinds and what benefits each ingredient provides for your specific hair type and texture.
3. Lessen Manipulation!
As protective styling is known for helping hair growth, it can also stun the progress of growth. When you are constantly combing, brushing, pulling, and tying up your hair into the various hairstyles we love and adore, this maneuvering can cause breakage. When styling, be cognizant of how much stress you are putting on your strands and try to limit how many styles you are whipping together back-to-back. Be sure to give your hair a break and let it be.
4. Cut It Off!
Honey, trims are your friend! I know it may sound counterproductive, but you have to lose some to win some. Literally, getting routine trims are so healthy for your hair and helps it to grow. Split ends get more and more worse as time goes by, traveling up the shaft. They also weigh your hair down and drain the nutrients from the healthy part of your hair. If that isn’t enough, when you’re wearing your fro, they don’t look good!
As you try out new ways to promote your hair growth, remember to do things with care. Your hair is a statement, a representation of who you are. When it is thriving, it boosts confidence and adds a positive note to your day. Keep your crown shining bright!

Protective Styling Tips: How Much Hair Do I Need For My Protective Hairstyle?
It’s that time again where wearing protective styles are necessary! Here are some guidelines on purchasing hair and how much to purchase to complete your desired look!
By: Emily-Ann
Happy New Year! Are you guys tired of the cold yet? Having a hard time deciding what hairstyle to do to get you through the rest of the winter season?
It’s that time again where wearing protective styles are being worn mostly in the next few months. Recently, I got my hair done in Fulani braids, and I noticed that I was unclear on how many packs of hair to purchase. I mean a few clicks and a search and I was able to find what I needed. I know if I am looking for this information then I know my readers would benefit from this information as well.
Here are some guidelines on purchasing hair and how much to purchase to complete the desired look. If you can do the style you’re looking to achieve even better. On the other hand, if you are like me, you’ll want a quick reference and guideline.
Many occasions I’ve walked into a store and no worker would approach me and ask if I needed any help. It’s nice to screenshot this guide and have it as a little personal assistant. It’s a nice feeling to know when you don’t completely rely on the girls working in the beauty supply store. I feel sort of unwelcomed. I usually do my own research and try products that my hair may respond well to. The only time I may ask a question is to inquire about if they have a particular product.
I did experience my braids being too tight, and this why I express the importance of letting the stylist know when it too tight. It’s best to give your hair about a week or two between protective styles. It’s like giving your hair and edges a well desserts break.
Let us know what kind of protective styles your doing this winter. Don’t forget to subscribe and follow us on all of our social media outlets to stay connected to all of the wonderful content. Makeup Tips: The 411 On Achieving Flawless Makeup Foundation Coverage
Fine lines, dark spots, large pores and blemishes are all a girl's worst nightmare when it comes to trying to achieve that flawless looking face! Here are some tips to achieving flawless makeup foundation coverage!
By: Tialena Evans
Fine lines, dark spots, large pores and blemishes are all a girl's worst nightmare when it comes to trying to achieve that flawless looking face! Do you find yourself trying to mask those imperfections with layers of caked on foundation and concealer that’s three shades too light? While it can seem frustrating and out of reach, look no further. I’m here to spill the tea on how to achieve that CoverGirl status face!
Which Way? The Clean Way!
It’s no secret that before applying face makeup you need to start on a fresh face, but what if I told you soap and water isn’t enough? Well, I’m telling you it’s definitely not enough! Although it cleanses the surface of your face, your pores are still filled with dirt, and traces of oil and makeup residue.
The solution to eliminating these hidden nuisances is a quick 30 second cotton ball swipe of your favorite alcohol-free face toner. A face toner is an absorbing liquid that also helps to correct and balance the pH of your skin, and helps control acne. This process should be done after washing your face with a cleanser to remove what isn’t visible to the naked eye.

We Making Moisture Moves
Now, before you even begin to grab ahold of your foundation brush, you need to pick up a bottle of H2O. Water consumption is the most essential piece to a smooth foundation application. It brings moisture to your face and lips, adds a natural glow, and promotes elasticity in the skin, which in turn slows down and decreases the development of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s like a pre-moisturizer before you even add the real thing. This is especially pertinent to individuals with naturally dry & flakey skin, like myself.
Once you’ve gotten your water intake situated, it’s time to moisturize your face with your favorite non-fragrance moisturizer. It is important to have a natural and neutral scent cream that will not irritate the face, thus causing a rash or unwarranted breakout. Everyone’s face takes to different substances, so someone with dry skin might need to use a thicker cream, while those with a more oily face may want to go with something a little lighter that won’t add onto the overproduction of face oils throughout the day.
Once moisturized, it’s time to prime your face. Primers are a base for your foundation, which allows it to go on smoother and last longer. They come in the form of creams, gels and powders. They also come in different shades, such as yellow, orange, green and others. These shades are dependent on skin tones and sun exposure. You should do your research on which primer is best for your and your face before purchasing to ensure you’re providing your skin with the best products to help illuminate it.
Brush vs Sponge: Battle of the Applicators
Okay, so this is where personal preferences come into play. The two most common foundation application tools are the brush and the sponge, which is also known as a beauty blender. Then, you have those insurgents who are contempt with using nothing more than a finger twirl to paint their faces, but that’s a discussion or another day.

Natural Hair Tips: 12 Protective Styling Tips For The Winter
Winter time is here which means taking care of your hair and edges is essential! Here are some protective styling tips for the winter!
By: Emily-Ann
It’s getting cold outside baby, and your hair is letting you know it. In my case I’ve got type 4 A/B hair. This means my hair is prone to extra dehydration around this time. I found that my spray bottle and black Castor oil are my best friend. In saying that, I have been scrolling through Pinterest, and looking at protective styles. I am seeing beautiful workmanship in braids and interesting details in hair jewelry. Our culture is so diverse and talented I kind of forget to celebrate just that.
We express our self through hair, dance, music, and clothing. It’s really great to see the different ways of braiding your hair. If you're looking for some inspiration, you can definitely find a ton of work on Pinterest. Here are some ideas to try out this holiday season. I know for many of us, we are the caregivers in our family big or small. The last thing you want to think about it is your hair. I’m sure your hair will understand and appreciate the tiny break.
Don’t forget to take mini breaks in between protective styling and be kind to your edges. Speak up with your stylist if you feel the braiding is too tight as well. Happy styling everyone.
Reminders
Give your edges a break, the constant manipulation can do more harm than good.
Keep your scalp moisturized by using applicants with your favorite mixture. My mixture is Aussie moisture conditioner, and Olive Oil
Get a good sealant, Black Castor oil, Grapeseed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, and Jojoba Oil. These are just a few great oils.
Get hot oil treatments and or a protein mask. If your hair isn’t sensitive to protein treatments.
Use heat to help products penetrate the hair follicles. For example, personal heat cap, hooded dryer, or for the lazy natural use your shower steam to help apply products. It works just as well.
Apply the Greenhouse method for moisture retention. This is achieved by placing a plastic bag/cap over your hair and leave the bag/cap overnight to let your natural body heat do the work. Place a satin scarf or bonnet over your hair and continue the night time routine. In the morning remove it and let your hair dry. Do this method maybe 1-2 times a week.
Pre poo your hair with your favorite conditioner. The more slip the better, helps to avoid breakage and retain the length you did achieve.
Trim your edges as it’s the oldest and weakest part of your hair
Part your hair in sections, much easier to work with
Sleep with a satin pillowcase or bonnet
Tuck in your ends
Try to purchase slick lined winter accessories, less snagging and pulling of the hair
Enjoy the holiday season 247liveculture family!

Determining Your Hair Porosity | The Key to Healthy Natural Hair
Understanding your porosity level is essential in understanding what products to use! Here are some tips to maintaining healthy natural hair!
By: Natasha Marsh
I am still quite new to the natural hair club. It was 9 months ago that I did the big chop and since then I have experimented with a plethora of natural hair products. I am starting to understand my hair a lot better but of course, there have been some bad hair days sprinkled in. A few months ago I was at the airport going through TSA when the agent looked at my passport picture, showing myself with a long mane, and then at me with my current short hair and said “so you chopped it all huh sis”. Beaming with delight and confidence I said “sure did”. To my surprise she says “ you should look up porosity” hands me back my passport and says “next”. At the time, I had no idea what hair porosity was, all I knew was this TSA agent didn’t have the friendliest tone in suggestion.
When I eventually looked up hair porosity I was shocked that my stylist never mentioned it, after all the times I inquired about what products were good for my hair. Porosity refers to how well your hair absorbs and holds moisture. Most naturals, like myself, only consider curl patterns when curating a hair care regime, but porosity could be the answer to all our bad hair days.
Basically, each individual hair strand is made of multiple layers. The outermost layer is called the cuticle. This layer opens up and allows oils and water to pass in and out of your hair. How porous hair can be is generally based off of genetics but can be greatly affected by coloring, heat styling or relaxing the hair.
Any woman with curls will tell you, caring for and styling curly hair is no easy task. Understanding your porosity level is essential in understanding what products to use. Generally there are three tiers-- low, medium, and high porosity. To figure out what tier you are, take the below test.
THE TEST
1. Float test- Take a couple of strands of hair from your combo or brush and drop them into a bowl of water. Make sure hair is clean as oil in hair can affect results. Let hair sit in the cup for at least 5 minutes. If your hair floats, you have low porosity. If it sinks, you have high porosity. 2. The slip n’ slide test: take a strand of hair and slide fingers toward the scalp. If you feel bumps along the way, this means that your cuticle is lifted and you have high porosity. If your fingers slip smoothly, then you have low porosity hair.
LOW POROSITY HAIR
Low porosity hair has a cuticle layer that is too tightly together, making it difficult for moisture or anything to enter the hair shaft. Generally you have low porosity if your hair takes a while to dry or if products sit on your hair instead of penetrate.
You’ll want to avoid using too many creams. The likelihood of buildup with multiple creams, shampoos, and conditioners, is high. If product is sitting on your hair it makes it harder for moisture to get through which ultimately leads to dryness. We recommend using lightweight formulas, indirect heat (hot water or heated deep conditioners) to open cuticles to let moisture in, and a weekly clarifying shampoo to remove residue.
MEDIUM POROSITY HAIR
Hair with medium porosity is the sweet spot, often requiring slim to no maintenance. The cuticle layer is looser, allowing moisture to get in and preventing too much from escaping. Hair with normal porosity tends to hold styles well, and can easily be colored or permed. Over time, however, these heat processes can change hair from normal to high porosity. To keep medium porosity, you’ll want to look for products for normal to dry hair as there is no need for a lot of conditioning.
HIGH POROSITY HAIR
If you have chemically processed hair or live in a big city with lots of pollutants you most likely fall into the high porosity category. The cuticle here has numerous gaps and holes, letting in too much moisture but instantly tangled or frizzed once dry. Essentially, getting the moisture in your hair is no problem, however, keeping it takes work. The key to high porosity is hydrating with moisturizing cleansing conditioners and leave-in conditioners, strengthen the cuticle with protein treatments, and locking in moisture with a gel or styler.

Natural Hair Tips: 5 Steps You Need to Know for Detangling Your Natural Hair
With summer around the corner, it’s time to let your hair down! Here are some helpful tips for detangling your natural hair and flaunting your curls!
By: Emily-Ann
Welcome back to another post about your natural hair. I know it’s been a minute, so without further a due let’s get right into it. I know with summer on your mind, many of us are taking out those braids and maybe looking to do wash day. Wash days can be time-consuming and especially for those of us wearing protective styling. I know this process can be annoying, but I have finally got it down packed when it comes to detangling.
In preparation for wash day, my hair tends to have a lot of product build up. Needless to say, my hair is really good at letting me know when its time for a wash. I have listed the steps I used that have been the most successful for me lately.
Step1. Part your hair in four easy sections; this will help you with the detangling your hair faster. If you have medium-long length, then you will need to do a little bit more sectioning. Try parting your four sections and then again into two more sections and proceed from there.
>> RELATED: Natural Hair Care Products For Black Hair: What’s in Your Spray Bottle?
Step 2. Taking a section of your hair, spray water or have on hand your spray bottle mixture ready for application. Lightly spray the hair to prevent unwanted snagging and tugging of the hair. You never want to do this on really dry hair as it will only cause more damage than good.
Step 3. Take the ends of your hair and finger detangle the ends and remove any (single strain knots) ssk(s) or shedding hair. It may take a minute or two with this step if you have medium-long hair. This step may be tedious, but worth it to maintain healthy length retention. Once you’ve finger detangled your hair, you can now use a wide tooth comb to release the shedding hair. Start from the ends and work your way up through the sections of your hair.
Step 4. Two strain twist your hair until all sections are complete. I like to add pretreatment to my hair like light oil and sit under a hooded dryer, or you can steam your hair. This will help open up the hair follicles and stimulate absorption of conditioner or treatment.
Step 5. I like to wash my hair in the two strain twist and then apply many DC masque or treatment to the hair. Wash as usual and retwist hair, and at this point I like to let my air dry with my favorite product. Lately, Shea Moisture’s extra-moisture detangler is my go-to product for wash days!
I find it doubles as great leave in for me, and re-apply about three more times throughout the week. My hair is left feeling super soft and easy to manage. I have tried many other products, but I keep coming back to this one. It is now a must-have and by far a staple of mine. Hopefully, I have helped someone who is finding detangling a challenge. Keep checking back with us for more helpful tips with natural hair!
